Are they playing soccer in the summer Olympics?

Yes. But it is not as exciting as the two other big football tournaments. I like it when all the best players are included in the teams and that is not the case with the Olympic games.

Each squad in the Olympic games can have eighteen players, of which no more than three may be born before 1 January 1989.

Are there 18 good players in Sweden?

Let's just check Sweden's football record:

World Cup runners-up: once
World Cup 3rd Place or 4th Place: three times

European Championships Semi-finalists: once

Olympic Champions: once

Care to share the USA's record in those departments?

Do you think that soccer in the US in finally starting to gain momentum? It seems to be from what we see over here, but of course its difficult to understand to what extent soccer is taking off (or not).

Had it been in Gdansk or Wroclaw I would have been there. I'll probably make a vacation in Poland next year instead.

Let me know, maybe we can have a beer or two somewhere :)

I will let you know if (or when) I travel to Poland.

That can be debated, at length, I am sure. But that is not my point. My point is that when I watch national team football I want to see the best players included. Not a stunted team that wouldn't even have made it to the quarter finals in the Champions Legue even if it is Spain or Brazil that are playing.

Not sure what is meant with the statement, the US is is just getting started in soccer.
Didn't Beckenbauer and Pele play with Cosmos New York in the 70's? That was quite a few decades ago.

The US have a nice football team, but no real structure in their program. So I think they'll be team worth watching for a nice match but never a team with a chance of winning a major title. Esp the European Cup.

Now the crunch, does the England team have a chance of winning? I think not, I don't get so much info over here in Germany. But I feel that after Capello left England, the squad has been a bit lost. Is England a team or are they a group of single players?

The "enemy" France, Ukraine and Sweden. I think England does have a good chance to pass through the first round. And in the thrid group match if it waynes, then that should help us even more.

What I did notice though, Germany always have an evening game when it is cooler, they always have games in the better half of the day. Check the other tournements and you'll see the same. So I think Germany will fluke their way through as they always do.

Capello was useless. I really don't feel he had the team behind him. His manager style just didn't suit English players . We played excellent in Euro 96 and World Cup 90 because we weren't on a leash and the players built up team spirit out of training. Once you start treating them like their in the army you wont get the best out of an English player.

My kids play it in high school however I much rather watch my daughter play softball and my son American football. Soccer in the last decade in the USA has really taken off. Will it ever be as popular as football or baseball I don't believe so.

Anybody fancy taking part in a little Euro footie competition? All you have to do is give your prediction of the results of each match. 3 pts for a correct result and score, 1 points for a correct result.

You don't need to know anything about football for this. Anyone fancy it?

I feel 3 points for the correct score is to much compared to one for the correct result. I feel an urge to complicate things if it is just a few of us that join. If there are many of us I suggest 2 points for a correct result and 1 additional point for a correct score.

But as I said I have an urge to make things a bit more complicated if there are just 2 to 4 or so of us.

This is a page I play with some friends of mine in Germany.

You place your "bets" or rather you guess the results prior to the matchday. And the points are given automaticly.
Free of charge. tons of fun as everyody can see once the matchday has started who has guessed what.

We play 4 points for correct result, 3 points for goal diffence, 2 points for wrong goal difference but correct tendency.
Of course you'll always get 3 or even 4 points for a draw.

Thanks british exil - but I wanted (if others are interested) to do something on the forum. There's a good friendly bunch here (and Steiner) and I thought it would be a bit of fun (so long as a Yank doesn't win ).

Nah, warpedbrain wore me down. BUT, I am going to be part of an invasion force that will defeat a certain snotty country, so I bide my time. Hint, Peter, John and Marjorie are in for a shock.

England to win. I can't recall a tourney where the lead-up interest was so small, and the expectations so low. Add to that a new manager generally regarded as total sh*te in the UK and a decidely average team, they are dead certs to win IMHO, probably via several dodgy goals and penalty shoot outs.

Would like to see Greece win, personally. The poor buggers could do with cheering up a bit.
