aye, think they really need Harry back. Spurs seem to be too 'neat' at the moment which means that you really need a top class striker who can score while still facing an organised defense?

Sadly I don't think its an issue that can be solved by Harry. Swap him for Janssen last night and the problems still remain. 1. Too many players not wanting or not having the ability to take people on, or 2.god forbid, actually running into the box to get themselves into position for crosses (which rarely come anyway - see no.1). Where is the killer ball in behind the defence. All this side-ways and backwards nonsense is all very pretty but as shown in the first half when we had 67% possession - and no decent attempts - it leads nowhere.

I agree - its as if the problem that AVB created (or inherited to perhaps be more fair) has never really been solved. Spurs became a possession team and have consistently struggled to break down well organised defences (esp those that play Pulis-ball) or to create real sustained pressure on the opposition. This seems to stem from a desire to control the entire match rather than the more traditional (for Spurs) logic of hoping it all clicks for 15 mins or so in each half when you impose yourself.

On the other hand, we are doing far better than we did in the fine old days of watching Crooks and Archibald up front

Except in those heady days we actually won the FA Cup twice and the UEFA cup once. Tottenham Hotspur haven't won the championship since 1961, the FA Cup since 1991 and a European trophy since 1984.

Pretty shocking....

The next person saying soccer on this thread deserves execution by firing squad. Or let's keep it traditional and bring the executioner and his axe

I don't know this particular case, Zorch, but even if his maths were wrong, the whole picture remains true IIRC some statistics. Most goals are scored after a few passes. There are indeed goals that are scored after the whole team + GK receive and pass the ball, but these are [spectacular] exceptions.

Ouch! My friend Mourinho is definitely struggling

And Erchim (Mongolian Premier League) were crowned champions two weeks ago.

yes its true, its a classic instance of both base rate neglect and only looking at the antecedents to one of two possible outcomes.

One reason why the good Reverend Bayes should be an obligatory part of any University Degree - not so much for the formal mathematics but the implications for how to reason from real world data to valid understanding.

Less formally, todays football was funny for what promises to be a massive Mourinho hissy fit and not funny since Spurs have decided that actually scoring goals is too boring for them

History was made today! Teams at Wembley Stadium played to a tie in only 75 minutes!
The previous record for ties at Wembley was 90 minutes or even longer.

As much as I hate to agree with FIFA, I think they are right here. After all if you allow this for one (or three actually) then who knows what some countries will be wanting to put on their shirts.....

Great

When I saw this I assumed Arsenal had lost last night - they were 2-0 down. So, having seen this, and with great expectation I went to the BBC website and..... they won

As a matter of fact, I like Wenger / Arsenal. Simply because they propose attacking football and the young talents thing (I don't know if they changed lately). It's a philosophical issue I will always appreciate everyone offering attacking football.

Well to paraphrase Sir WSC

Ain't 11 matches enough for one season? Do we really need all 38 to be played?

Football is such a cruel game. Scotland did not deserve to be on the end of a 3-0 scoreline. England were sloppy (especially Stones), lacking in ideas (even more than usual) but managed to put away three of the few chances we had.

What never ceases to amaze me it how England always manage to make poor teams seem much better than they are. Some of Scotland's passing and attacking play in the first 15 minutes of the 2nd half (and for part of the first) was excellent and only the final ball/shot let them down and came to England's rescue.

England are truly awful.

Another loss for Norway, yet the coach replied that this is not the time to talk about leadership changes...

I really, really, dislike the current interpretation of the offside rule. It is to complicated and ambiguous.

I guess this is a classic, but somehow I missed it. Soccer vs Football rant by John Cleese

If anything, a bit harsh. If I well understood, he is basically calling the American football players morons.
