Lifting them out prevents loss of VPs, I guess. Also if he doesn't want to spend PPs to rebuild, he doesn't have to. Just the ARM/VEH/supplies.

Ah, that might be it (VPs). If he rebuilds NavGuards at this stage though I would be very happy. Could he be?

I'm fairly certain that they're cheap to rebuild, consisting almost entirely of squads. I can't imagine him being short on cheap LCUs, though.

If you are a fan of IPAs. This is a must try. Easily one of my top 5 favorites of all time. Its actually american. Quite shocking!

Pfah, IPAs.

Likewise. Which HQa is present doesn't matter so long as there's an HQa, or so it seems.

Nah, better. I've got lots of favorites. Make my own every couple of months, too. But, being something of a beer snob, I can't stand IPAs. "Hopsplosions" are boring! Why kill your tastebuds with just hoppy bitterness when there are so many other tastes in a good beer?

Its the bitterness I love! There even starting to show up some very nice DIPAs here in Sweden. Lovely!

I do drink the occasional ale though. I´ve fallen in love with a small brewing company here in Sweden and 80% of the beer I drink are from them.

______________________________________________________________________________

Not much today.

------------------------
Luzon
------------------------

Troops at Iba and Vigan reach their destinations. First attacks go in tomorrow. I hope to wrap this up quickly!

Erik launch another sweep hitting thin air at Iba. For now I´m content to do nothing and let my pools heal. Have to be careful with setting LRCAP over Luzon though so I don´t get caught up in these sweeps.

quote:

Morning Air attack on San Fernando , at 80,74

Weather in hex: Severe storms

Raid spotted at 31 NM, estimated altitude 37,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 7 minutes

Japanese aircraft
Ki-83 x 64

No Japanese losses

Aircraft Attacking:
64 x Ki-83 sweeping at 32000 feet

I´m starting to move out a lot of the shipping at Manila as they finish repairs. A lot of the combat troops that took part in the Manila siege is starting to be lifted out. I want them out of Eriks recon range. I still have two corps and most of the armor on Luzon doing mopping up. I think I will move the troops and Fleet to Morotai for now.

------------------------
China/Indochina
------------------------

3 more days and I will move for Erik blocking force. Its 150.000 troops. I will do what I can to wear them down. Recon shows a small reserve of 45.000 men at Nanning. Thats it. He of course have the Superstack at HK/Canton with 200.000 men. But if he moves them out he will expose the entire coast to a landing.

This will be sort of a reversed early China. I have supply and quality in troops while he will lack supply, have low quality troops but loads of them. Stakes are higher for him though. A collapse at China at this time would be the end for Japan.

As soon as I have a level 9 AF in the area (Haiphong 8.17 right now) the entire bomber force of about 1000 bombers will rebase to China and start burning the supply. This together with combat and B29s bombings of what industry is left I hope will put a tremendous strain on his supply. Once supply isn´t enough to flow to the troops the downward spiral is FAST.

If it looks like I will hit a rock wall I have a plan to remedy this. But I´m going to be patient here. The thought is to attack his supply. Not kill troops and achieve a massive breakthrough. I know that if Eriks troops are starting to waver he is going to start throwing more into the grinder. So far he has been completely unwilling to give an inch of ground until his troops just collapses. Time to take advantage of that.

------------------------
DEI
------------------------

The main force will reach Batavia in 3-4 days.

Your screenshot of Luzon looks like Dec 10th, 1941 if you didn't known the troops levels.

Looking at your mega-stack in China, what level of experience has your troops reached?? How many divisions with experience over 85??

Ki-83s - Find their base and destroy them on the ground.

Beer - I drink either an American micro-brewery or Samuel Adams which is like our largest micro-brewery. I've always been partial to Bass Ale if I go across 'the pond' for a beer.

I think a brewery stops counting as micro when they sell bottles with twist-off caps... Sams has some good ones though.

Currently drinking Lancaster Winter Warmer. Is delicious. There's a brewery in Delaware that makes a chocolate peanut butter stout, also delicious.

I think my favorite is a brewery called Heavy Seas in Baltimore. They have a saison ale in the summer, Red Sky at Night, that is awesome. In the winter they have an ESB, and they also did a white IPA this past year. Bonus points: their retail brews are all 7-8% ABV without losing any flavor, and only cost $1 more per 6-pack than some other craft brews. Mostly they do IPAs, so you'd like them Jocke. They also do a black IPA.

Haha, yeah it does doesn´t it. Feels really odd being back on Luzon and not huddling on Bataan or in Manila! The troops arn´t that experienced actually. The 6th OZ ID is the most experienced one of the lot with 83 EXP. After that is the 9th OZ ID with 77 EXP.

My best unit without a doubt is the 1st Marine divisions with a staggering 92 EXP. I bet it could dislodge 3 dug in Japanese IDs by given some time. Got to love the Marines!

Samuel Adams is nice. Actually quite popular here in Sweden! Easy to drink.

We don´t have twist-off caps here. Or plastic bottles.

I never managed to acquire a taste for stouts. I don´t really like the stale "feel" of them! Love ESBs. Hard to come by in Sweden though. But Fullers have one popular which can be easily found. Actually drinking a Fullers IPA as I write this.

This is the preferred Christmas drinking in my household. http://www.ratebeer.com/beer/oppigards-winter-ale/39203/ Mt father in law always make sure he has a case for me during Christmas. He claims his preferred one (another brewery called Mariastad) is much better. But I can´t help to notice the Oppigårds always run out first!

______________________________________________________________________________

I might drop the daily updates for a while as there is almost nothing to report.

------------------------
Luzon
------------------------

Troops at Iba launch two days of consecutive attacks. Negligible losses to the allied forces while Japan suffer 3000 casualties in the two attacks. This is the second one. Forts were dropped on each attack. Now its just a matter of time.

quote:

Ground combat at Iba (78,75)

Allied Deliberate attack

Attacking force 32565 troops, 848 guns, 960 vehicles, Assault Value = 1443

Defending force 29049 troops, 368 guns, 211 vehicles, Assault Value = 171

Allied adjusted assault: 441

Japanese adjusted defense: 244

Allied assault odds: 1 to 1 (fort level 2)

Allied Assault reduces fortifications to 1

Combat modifiers
Defender: terrain(+), disruption(-), preparation(-), supply(-)
Attacker:

Japanese ground losses:
1083 casualties reported
Squads: 8 destroyed, 22 disabled
Non Combat: 66 destroyed, 100 disabled
Engineers: 9 destroyed, 24 disabled
Guns lost 41 (17 destroyed, 24 disabled)
Vehicles lost 34 (15 destroyed, 19 disabled)
Units destroyed 1

Allied ground losses:
105 casualties reported
Squads: 0 destroyed, 17 disabled
Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 7 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 18 disabled
Guns lost 15 (1 destroyed, 14 disabled)

BFs moving for Aparri should arrive in a couple of days. It will be built up to level 9 (currently 7). The armor continues to harass the Japanese forces. The remaining enemy troops are slowly being herded towards Laoag.

Erik do another sweep. This time over Iba. I´m tempted to do an ambush but I retrained myself. Most important thing right now is to build up the pools so I can sustain some combat losses.

------------------------
The Fleet
------------------------

Having being almost completely reorganized the Fleet moves for Morotai. Two CVE TFs (1000 planes) will escort a massive fleet moving from Manila to Wake. Its almost a thousand ships. Don´t want any surprises...2 CVE TFs is enough to deal with KB + Marianas LBA.

------------------------
Java
------------------------

Troops have finally reached Batavia. A bombardment is ordered for tomorrow.

------------------------
Malaya
------------------------

Troops clear Singora.

------------------------
P47N
------------------------

Well, a happy day! This is a true beast. I now have a qualitative advantage again. I get 100 of these lovely things per month. They will be earmarked for the best I have. I hope this will be a nasty shock to Erik in two months or so.

This map shows the areas still in Japanese control. As can be seen from the previous map the Allied gains have been significant during the last 6 months.

______________________________________________________________________________

------------------------
Luzon
------------------------

As the allied bombers stand down the only combat mission during the entire turn is another Japanese sweep of Iba. As usual it hits empty air.

quote:

Afternoon Air attack on Clark Field , at 79,76

Weather in hex: Thunderstorms

Raid spotted at 15 NM, estimated altitude 36,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 3 minutes

Japanese aircraft
Ki-83 x 74

No Japanese losses

Aircraft Attacking:
74 x Ki-83 sweeping at 32000 feet

------------------------
DEI
------------------------

The bombardment at Batavia shows Erik has left only a token force here.
quote:

Ground combat at Batavia (49,98)

Allied Bombardment attack

Attacking force 25229 troops, 277 guns, 257 vehicles, Assault Value = 1173

Defending force 5989 troops, 28 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 62

Japanese ground losses:
15 casualties reported
Squads: 0 destroyed, 1 disabled
Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 1 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled

Assaulting units:
124th Cavalry Regiment
1st Army Tank Regiment
2/6th Armoured Regiment
7th Australian Division
5th Australian Division
I Australian Corps

Defending units:
4th Indpt SNLF Coy
III/19th Naval Guard Unit
5th Indpt SNLF Coy
10th Area Fleet
7th Shipping Engineer Regiment
13th Field AF Construction Battalion
64th Construction Battalion
25th JAAF AF Bn

The city will most like be in allied hands by tomorrow thus ending the DEI campaign. I might jump over to Sumatra. Still undecided.

------------------------
Formosa
------------------------

The decision to not change the prep of the Formosa troops might prove a good one. Frantic activity and it looks like troops are leaving Formosa heading East. I´m guessing Erik felt uncomfortable leaving Hokkaido completely open and are now scrambling to get troops there. What is left of the allied sub force sets sail for the waters east of Formosa.

------------------------
Fuel
------------------------

Is starting to become a worry again. I´m down to 500.000 on Luzon which may sound much. But it isn´t. I just refueled the Fleet and they gobbled almost 200.000 fuel completely draining the AOs I had at Cotabato. AOs will head back to Manila to top off the tanks and then meet up with the fleet at Morotai.

The xAKs have started helping with hauling fuel. About a million fuel is currently moving towards Luzon aboard xAKs. Most of the Tankers have just left Luzon in the "thousand ship convoy" bound for the WC. It will be a while before they can return with full load.

------------------------
Bomber command
------------------------

I just maxed out all the 2E squadrons more or less doubling the numbers. Problem is that this drained the pilot pool and I had to graduate a bunch of trainees with EXP 40 GRND 60. Lower then I would have liked. Then again the job is pretty risk free as long as I don´t mess up again.

What is he defending Palembang with?? Landing at Oosthaven??

Option #2 - Take Cocos Island and then ship in fuel from India which should be swimming in fuel from Abadan if you have been using those smaller capacity TKs to ship it in to at least Karachi.

PB is actually lightly held. Perhaps its worth grabbing it just for the fuel. I have about 250 oil/refs in my hands right now but they are nowhere near enough to meet demand but its rising with 3 per day as I´m repairing. Perhaps the million fuel that will arrive in 30-40 days will be enough to keep me floating. I expect fleet demands to decrease for one reason or another once we have the next landing/battle out of the way.

Isn´t cocos an Atoll? I don´t like atolls...

Palambang is just a distraction from the main goal. You have enough xAK's to haul a hundred times what Palambang produces. The only way I'd mildly approve of taking Palambang would be a wider campaign to take Singapore back and simplify your lines of communication with Thailand.

Even at that, you're wasting time on a side-show operation in a side-show theater, at the expense of the main event.

You've cut the head off of the hydra, Joc! Don't waste time now fighting with the tentacles! Go for the kill!

Unless you're fighting for the Singapore VPs, which you've stated multiple times that you aren't.

If you've got forces in backwaters that wouldn't otherwise be used, and you have the time to spend on them during your turns, go for it. But as stated above, it shouldn't detract from your main goals.

I think the feint towards the north, while hitting Formosa is a great idea - all worthwhile if you can keep up the recon & spread it out a bit too....you need to get him to jump in the other direction while you hit him in a vulnerable spot.

Hey guys!

I think I´m going to land on Sumatra. Not so much for the fuel as Erik has abandoned the place. Since its free of charge I might as well take what is offered. I only have a reinforced Corps operating here (2 OZ IDs 1 African ID and 2 OZ Tank RGTs). They might as well enjoy themselves to Sumatra as sitting on Java doing nothing. The fuel at PB is a nice bonus.

My patience payed off...

Luzon

Ha, Erik sweep completely blind into Batangas. Having no recon of the place that is risky. It so happens that I have 850 Fighters there...

Morning Air attack on Batangas , at 79,78

Weather in hex: Heavy rain

Raid detected at 36 NM, estimated altitude 34,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 8 minutes

Japanese aircraft
Ki-83 x 76

Allied aircraft
Spitfire VIII x 68
P-51D Mustang x 145
F4U-1A Corsair x 39
F4U-1D Corsair x 45
F6F-3 Hellcat x 37
F6F-5 Hellcat x 24

Japanese aircraft losses
Ki-83: 7 destroyed

Allied aircraft losses
Spitfire VIII: 1 destroyed

21 Ki83 are shot down for 1 Spitfire. Tihi. Guess that will put an end to the sweeping!

Troops at Iba are so fatigued I had to stand them down now to rest for a couple of days. Defenders are still making a stand. In the north Japanese resistance is reduced to only 1 base.

DEI

Not too surprising Batavia is secured on the first attack.

Allied engineers reduce fortifications to 4

Allied adjusted assault: 756

Japanese adjusted defense: 107

Allied assault odds: 7 to 1 (fort level 4)

Allied forces CAPTURE Batavia !!!

Troops reach Superstack Mk5. A bombardment is ordered for tomorrow. I´m expecting between 5-6k Japanese AV.

------------------------
Japanese Recon
------------------------

Has virtually ceased completely. Could supply be so bad he has to stand them down? Or has he just stopped caring? I had a recon flight over Manila and Iloilo a couple of days ago. Thats about it. Still flying in China though.

Yeah, I think it would work. But I need to see if Erik will shift those 300.000 Jap troops first. Still looks like Erik is evacing some of them but I´m not certain yet. I have given myself 2 more weeks before making up my mind. Can´t wait forever. Hokkaido is looking more and more enticing...Sadly the troops don´t gain prep while at sea. And its a long journey.

Erik continues to splurge his Ki-83.

------------------------
Luzon
------------------------

Troops rest today. Most of the units not intended for Luzon have left the Island for various destinations. Some AS will go to China in anticipation of the air offensive there. In a sign of the complete collapse of IJN power in the South China Sea Allied TFs cross from Luzon and back completely unescorted and at will.

Erik continues to lift out troops. How this works in the game is so ridiculous it makes my blood boil every time I encounter it. I´m not helped by the fact that for some incredible stupid reason the game displays airbase damage instead of runway damage. Who the HECK cares about airbase damage??? So the fields gets operational a couple of days before I know they are giving Erik ample opportunity to lift stuff out before I close them again. The flying boats are impossible to stop. There is nothing short of LRCAP you can do to stop them.

It makes me furious every time I encounter this.

------------------------
China
------------------------

The first bombardment does more damage then anticipated. Its all about burning supply at this point. 8 Japanese divisions in place. I´ll probably do a deliberate attack here in a week or so. I have lots of troops prepping for various ports on the Chinese coast. The rough idea here is to take advantage of Eriks reluctance to give ground. If his troops are starting to shows signs of collapsing he will not withdraw but rather feed more troops into the grinder. Those troops will have to come from the Canton/HK Superstack protecting the coast. Once he has sent too much into the grinder I will land behind him.

He also did another of those Ki-83 sweeps. Looks like this is the Japanese fighter we will see from now on. This one doesn´t go in blind though as Erik has a good DL on the base. Not sure what he was hoping for sweeping a 250 Fighter base.

quote:

Afternoon Air attack on Haiphong , at 68,57

Weather in hex: Heavy cloud

Raid detected at 28 NM, estimated altitude 32,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 6 minutes

Japanese aircraft
Ki-83 x 41

Allied aircraft
Thunderbolt I x 113
Thunderbolt II x 8

Japanese aircraft losses
Ki-83: 4 destroyed

Allied aircraft losses
Thunderbolt I: 2 destroyed

17 Ki-83s are shot down for 4 Thuds. I can´t understand these sweeps. I wonder if Erik is starting to get frustrated with the lack of air combat for the last 4-5 months. Its boring as heck so I can certainly understand him if thats the case. But for me there are no other option. Given Pax earlier numbers that a single ID trashed is the same as 20.000 AC shows the futility of trying to attrit the Japanese industry by destruction of its airforce. Planes are dirt cheap. So why bother? Not much fun but with the allied pools looking like they do I will remain passive and only appear in mass on defensive CAP.

------------------------
Hokkaido
------------------------

This is looking more and more like a viable option after all. I managed to approach it and wasn´t spotted until 9 hexes close! I sat at 11 hexes for 4 days without being spotted.

Fuel and Supply
______________________________________________________________________________

Given the recent discussion I decided to do a inventory and see whats around and whats coming in.

------------------------
Fuel
------------------------

Luzon: 350k
Mindanao: 250k
DEI: Empty

Production
Oil: 363
Ref: 277

Aboard AOs
250k

Incoming
About 1,5 Million within 40 days

------------------------
Supply
------------------------

Luzon: 1,1 M
Mindanao: 150k
DEI: 350k

Production
None

Incoming
1,8 million

------------------------
Overall situation
------------------------

While the numbers look big I estimate this to last perhaps 2-3 months. The allied war machine at this point absolutely gobbles fuel and supplies. I havn´t counted all the small bases but quite recently I had almost 3 million supply on Luzon. About 750k have been shipped to Indochina but thats still almost 1 million down. Some is of course on smaller bases or aboard the troops ships heading for Morotai, Mindanao or other rear bases.

To be completely honest I havn´t kept much an eye on this and I doubt I need to. Just make sure you keep the convoys rolling and it will be fine. But never ever for a moment think that "its enough now" and stop sending them. You will run out very fast. Especially fuel can disappear in no time. Its not only the was ships but having a thousand other ships uses A LOT of fuel. And some of them have to be refueled locally.
