Your early KB raid on NE Oz is the first move that he was not ready for in this game. Good One!
He will indeed miss those xAKs. This scenario includes reduced cargo capacity, right?? Others playing with that restriction have mentioned how even the Allies struggle to move supply and troops at the outset of the game. He likely lost a month's worth of Sydney supply production.

Thanks mate! No, this one is without cargo limitation...

However it feels good to finally bag some of his ships (i've lost more transport than him during these first weeks)

The good news of the day is that Palembang falls in japs' hands completely intact!

The allies evacuated every plane from there and didn't even try to come into action with his surface assets

In Malaya things are going well, and in China we've pushed a chinese corp that was guarding the woods east of Changsha. Now we'll try to enter into the city with 2 divisions, hoping to stop the supply production there and lay the siege.

Mavis are moving to cover the area around Java...it seems that his SCTFs have completely vanished...probably back in India or in nortthern Oz...

There you go! Palembang is a good get, and perhaps has restored player morale a bit. Get Ms. Betty up thru the western DEI now and it will become an Axis lake. Then move on the eastern DEI and you will have yourself a phase I conquest just about complete. Then work on what else, if anything, you want to do.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR Dec 30, 41

Thx Crib! Gotta say that my morale has improved

Today we delivered another couple of good hits. army bombers took off from Bankok and raided Rangoon harbour, damaging several transports disbanded in port. At the same time KB's kates bombed Brisbane harbour, hitting more transports hidden there.
Daily bombings continue over Singapore, while our armies are marching towards the Empire's gem!

Betties from Singkawang torpedoed a couple of TK stealing fuel from Balikapan, while no enemy major ships are spotted in the whole Java area.
5 more Buffalos are shot down during a escort mission near Batavia (the DEI Air force is really non existent now).

The army that conquered Palembang will now spread all over southern Sumatra, clearing the way from what remains of Sumatra ducth garrisons.

Betties, recon planes and Zeros are ready to be moved from Takao/Japan area towards Mindanao and Rabaul.

A Naval garrison and a base force are ready to be unloaded at marcus, while we're waiting for another base force for Wake.

Naval garrisons are being sent to NOPAC too.

Air HQ unloading at Rabaul. Soon we'll controll the whole area with my Betties+Zeros.
With PM almost evacuated i don't know what to do. I have the south sea detachment and the Guards Regiment, plus another SNLF that were bound for the PM invasion...but i think a single regiment will be enough. What to do with the other units? I could keep them in reserve...but i hate the idea of not exploiting the first months of amphib operations.... I could land in NW Oz...but don't have enough assets to efficiently defend those gains right now.
I'm thinking of a crazy idea.... What about a rapid conquest of PM and then pack up everything and move, along with the KB, directly towards Darwin with two regiments? At the same time 3 SNLF units, along with some base forces could come down from Mindanao-Menado area with the mini-KB and secure Ambon-Kendari.... i'll leave the SOPAC area free for a possible CV raid, but, by that time, i sould have 60 Betties and 30 Zeros at Rabaul...more than enough to prevent an easy approach to my sealanes...

What do you think? I think that an early conquest of Ambon-Kendari-Darwin could speed up the whole process of securing the DEI, helping isolating Java and leaving only the "Perth-Route" for the allies evacuation....

Moreover i'll finally be able to re-unite my CVs in a single strong TF, with baby KB acting as a CAP platform, backed up by the KB

Sounds like a plan?

You will want to go down to Tulagi and Lunga area with a SNLF, BF, and Construction units to build up one of those bases. Not necessary to land and build up both right now. I like Tulagi as it has a port already a size 2.

I like to take Port Moresby and Milne Bay and then allow some of your Naval Guards units you get over the next few months go mop up Lae and the other by-passed bases on the east side of New Guinea.

If your want, I would take both Horn Island and Meurake with South Sea Detach and/or Guards Mixed Brigade.

Now, back to the SRA and Ambon. Warning, those CD guns are nasty. I just brought a single infantry unit there and it wasn't enough to overwhelm the defenders. Land with two infantry regiments or a brigade. You don't want to lose more transports like I did when I had to land another infantry unit there. You will need some of those slow, old BBs to soak up the CD gun hits and have them in a SC TF to bombard or embedded in the Amphib TF.

Leave Darwin alone for now, but capture Ambon, Kendari, Timor (especially Koepang), Makassar, and then Denpasar. If you have Port Moresby and Horn Island then you close off access to northern Australia and SRA from that direction. When it comes to Timor, I take Lautem and Dali first so the troops at Koepang have no valid base to retreat to. Then, an Air HQ goes to Koepang. I land two small units above Makassar at those bases to cut off any retreat. I like Denpasar as a base to place an Air HQ.

So, before or around the time of the invasion of Java, I have an Air HQ at Tulagi/Lunga (moved south from Rabaul once one of these bases is built up - AF 2 or larger), Port Moresby/Milne Bay, Koepang, Denpasar, Oosthaven/Palembang, Malaya (Georgetown or Alor Star - maybe Victoria Point). So, your initial expansion area is covered by Nell/Betty and any surface ships will have trouble getting through or out. I leave my Nell/Betty on 20% Naval Search to help my limited Mavis/Emily coverage.

Slightly OT - I pulled up this scenario as Japan to see what I would do differently as Japan. I'm playing RA as Japan, but wanted to see if I could be smarter next time as I think I need to send a full division south to Babeldoab and help with that part of the SRA. I forgot about a change in PP expenditures for units under the same parent command. All of the 56th Division, except the 146 Inf Rgt, is pre-loaded in TF 123 at Hiroshima. Those units within TF 123 are assigned to 25th Army. The 146th Inf Rgt is assigned to 16th Army. When you pull up the 146 Infantry to change commands, it shows it will cost 398 PP. When you actually change it, the cost is only 99 PP. Thus, you can do this plus the Guards Mixed Bde at Tokyo with the 500 PP you have at start.

I would maybe land on Mindanao with the whole 56th Div and divert those loaded at Babeldoab to Mindanao vs southern Luzon. Just a thought here.

Hmmm.. you really should establish air supremacy first in the region before worrying about Palembang too much.

To me you are rushing things when these things don't need to be done so.

With airsupremacy you control seas around Palembang and he cannot fortify or move extensive troops there safely.

Now you are doing that other way round.. from top to bottom when safer course would be to climb upwards.

mmmm....interesting view....

So you think i should drop the whole Palembang operation for the moment? And maybe land all those units somewhere else? I'm still in time to get rid of the whole operation and change the final destination....

A series of screenshots of the different theatres...

Don't you play a mod in which refinaries don't produce supplies? If so, you can starve them out any time later. The only need to rush is, if the opponent can produce supplies in place and sends in everything he can gather.

edit:
oops, it is already captured

Great tips Micheal! Thx!

So basically you're saying that, for phase I, i should only concentrate on the historical perimeter, plus closing the door between NE Oz and Sout-East DEI, right?
Very well, it sounds wise and clever. I'll do that.

Tulagi is going to be invaded soon and will start building it up as soon as the construction units arrive from Japan. In the next week i'll buy more engineers unit to be used to start fortyifying Bouganville and Munda too.
I'm still uncertain where to put all my air HQs... for sure one will be staying in Rabaul (with range 4) and i'd like to build up the whole chain of bases around Rabaul, so to have an extraordinary fortress there.
PM will probably not be built up. I will build forts and a series of AFs around Buna-Lae area...Pm will be used as a "pillow"

Horn Island and Meurake so? Well, i think they are both undefended so probably a SNLF will be sufficient to invade them. The SSD and the Guards regiment are already loaded on transports and will start to move to PM as soon as the KB comes back from Brisbane.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR Dec 31, 41

KB moves to refuel between Noumea and Brisbane where she meets the AOs.
Kaga+Ryuho are moving back to Cambra Bay to finally refuel and get their torps back (and their Kates!!!!).

The news of the day is that 2 strong allied formations are spotted near Ambon- Menado area. There's a 7 ships TF (only 2 CLs identified for sure) moving east of Menado towards Bandoleap! and another TF that appears smaller (a CV was reported but probably is a mistake) moving south of Ambon. I got an amphib TFs undefended near Menado, while my mini-KB is refueling 10 hexes far away on the east....
few days ago we had identified CA Camberra in those waters so probably it's an Australian SCTF trying to smash my landings.... still undecided if to send my BBs and my CVL/CVEs to meet them or not...the presence of a possible CV scares me...

In China he's threatening Amory (southern coast in front of Pescadores)... i'll try to counter it but i fear i have already lost those bases... too many partisans to take care of!

In Burma he seems to be evacuating Moulmein... We'll attack tomorrow with a RTA division and a regiment of the 55th Division, supported by the 15th army HQ.

70 Sallies are pounding Singapore every day.

the first attack at Cayegan (the last redoubt in allied hands in Mindanao) is repulsed...will wait for the second regiment and the tanks to come in and finish the job.

Unloading a Naval Guard units and a base force at Marcus Is. The next base force that arrives will go to Wake.

Everything is quiet near java...only the same old transports loading res and oil at Balikapan...hopefully we'll hit them tomorrow once again.

You will have plenty of time to fortify Rabaul. Why think about that area now?? Expand further south. How far is up to you.

I listed 'potential' bases for you Air HQs over the next few weeks. If not PM, then Milne Bay area is good as it is like Rabaul and those dot bases could be built up. Add in Sabang on the very northern tip of Sumatra vs leaving it on Malaya if you capture that base.

Enterprise could have and probably did send those Vindicators to Rabaul via Wake. Since you had a CV off Japan, that was probably Lexington as Saratoga starts at San Diego. Enterprise could remain just close enough to Pearl to have either a small Marine fighter group or the old SBD-1 fly on day 2. She could easily reach Townsville in 10 days (18th Dec). Refuel, and be off Darwin by Christmas. Thus, you will see his CV and his refueled and re-armed SC TFs operating in this area. I would not be surprised to see him have an Air HQ there with the TBs (Swordfish and Vildebeest) at a size 2 AF. He has enough supply to do this. So, have an Air HQ at both Babeldoab and at Davao along with Nell/Betty and Zeros along with a Mavis group to see what he has there. Think about sending KB over after you land at Port Moresby and Horn Island.

EDIT -
1) CV Hornet just arrived at San Diego. So plan accordingly.
2) I know you lost some DMS at Palembang. You don't have any over at Truk, so send 2 or 3 from Takao.
3) Send one or two Recon units to Rabaul area that can be divided into three parts. Start to recon potential invasion points like Horn Island or Luganville before sending in troops. Don't bump your big toe in the dark because you were unwilling to turn on the lights.

Kurile Islands

There is method to make these islands better protected. I bring this up now as I would prepare for a 'potential' raid by 2 CVs into this area to try to sink your transports moving resources back from bases in Sakhalin and Hokkaido.

All the islands in the Kuriles have the base assigned to "5th Fleet." Thus, you are unable to fly in the many air groups in Japan to any of the bases. However, you can fly them to Formosa as those bases are assigned to "General Defense" command. So, you need to change a base within the Kuriles over to "General Defense." Here's how!!

1) Change the command of a small AA and regular BF over to "5th Fleet."
2) Use an Amphib TF to transport them to an island (I would pick either Uruppu-jima or Shimushiri-jima).
3) After they have unloaded, change the command of the small AA back to "General Defense."
4) You should now be able to change the command of the base over to "General Defense."
This should cost less than 200 PP.

Now, you should be able to select that base as a destination for all your Restricted air groups within Japan. Build up that base steadily with the 1 BF there and maybe later add more BFs and/or engineers. Find a FP unit on Japan that can be bought out using PP. Do so. Find an AV in Japan that you can take off the organic FP and place this unit on to re-size. It will probably be a max of 9. This unit is taken off the next day and upgraded to Jakes. This air unit (FP with Jakes) will now go to the island that just had the BF and AA on it and set to 50% Naval Search, 20% train, and 20% Rest. Also, in the near future, one of the Air HQs that is in Japan that can be bought out (PP) and moved to Hokkaido.

I learned this lesson the hard way in one of my first games as Japan as 2 CVs came up through this area (by FatR) and wiped out almost all those transport TF in two days and left without any attacks by me. I had nothing set up here to give me warning and the ability to react. My Air HQs were down around Tokyo or further west. Never again.

Class Dismissed!!

...ok, you're lucky that i have a strong sense of humor

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR Jan 01, 02, 42

In the last two days we had the confirmation that the enemy is making a stand in souther DEI. Probably a Timor Fortress strategy, along with the reinforcement of Ambon and, it appears, Horn Island.
Several major warships are spotted between Ambon and Timor, while resupplying TFs are signaled at Horn Island.
His american CAs attacked and sunk an amphib TF that was delivering a base force at Ternate, revealing their presence. So Micheal was probably right: american CVs have been moved to southeastern DEI lately.
Countermeasures are taken: Kaga+Ryujo will move to recombine with mini-KB (Zuiho+Tayio+Hosho) south of Mindanao, while the KB will support the landings at PM, Mylne Bay, Horn Island and Mereuake (the last two are probably fortified)- recon ordered for the next days) and will move through the straits flanking the enemy positions near Ambon.
The idea is to trap the enemy fleets between the hammer (Kaga's group 200 planes strong), coming from north, and the anvil (KB), coming from southeast.
Kaga will also cover the 5th Ambinb Bde landings in southern Borneo (Tarakan), while 4 SNLFs will be getting ready for a landing in Java.

In Burma we conquered Moulmein, pushing back what was left of his garrison after the evacuation behind the river.
Rangoon's harbour is hit again, sinking and damaging several ships disbanded (with Sallies) and sinking several transports unloading (with Nells from Bankok).
We attacked his shippings resupplying Horn Island with our betties from Rabaul.

In China we finally were able to free Canton from enemy's siege and the army operating there has been pushed eastwards, opening the way to the north.
I'm massing a strong Tank Corp for a push in the Sian area. Hopefully, those tanks, operating in the plains, will be able to estabilish a bridghead behind the river that the enemy is using to create a defensive perimeter.
2 of our divisions entered in Changsha, where 120k enemies are waiting. Wanna pin them down and stop the industries producing supplies.

In Malaya we're getting closer and closer everyday to Singapore, which is daily bombed by 80 very effective Sallies.

In Sumatra we're advancing towards Oosthaven, while pushing back the former defenders of Palembang westwards. We'll try a para-drop against Sebang in the next 2 days.

Minelaying subs are I-121, 122, 123, and 124. Use them in a TF with 2 or all 4 someplace. I use mine just for laying mines and not normal patrols.

NW Australia - off of Exmouth, have 2 to 4 subs on patrol. I would have 1 Glen equipped sub and 2 to 3 fleet subs all patrolling in parallel direction from SW to NE direction. Any ships running into the SRA or away will probably run through here.

Remember to recon your planned invasion sites well. If he's got a large concentration of troops somewhere and you can bypass it to cut them off, do so. You can finish them later, the important thing is not to incur too many losses to yourself, so it's much better IMHO to give your bomber pilots some active experience and pound the enemy for a few weeks while your ground troops prep for the target.

Since you're setting up a trap for Q-Ball, my suggestion would be to try and keep the KB in the shadows, nice and quiet. Let him know where the Kaga and her contingent are though, you want him going after something juicy worth exposing his carriers. If you have subs in the area, try to plug possible escape routes with them. If you can make even one of his carriers eat a torp right now, he'll have a rough time getting out of there with his flattops.

Alternately, you could expose the KB, and keep Kaga in the dark, try to force him north to avoid the KB. If you feel the Kaga and her planes are up to the task.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR Jan 03-07, 42

Five more turns into the war...not the best ones we experienced so far.

Let's advance with order:

NOPAC-CENTPAC-SOPAC: nothing. Delivering supplies and base forces at Addak, Marcus, Wake and Kwalajein.

SWPAC: We finally landed between the 5th and 6th of Jan at PM. the 144th Infantry Regiment, the Guards Mixed Brigade and the Maizuru 1st SNLF (pretty crack units i'd say) got welcomed over the beaches by a huge CD guns fire. So unexpected and bloody as hell!
We didn't have any devoted recon plane at Rabaul till 2 days ago, so i had send the Mavis to do the job. 2 weeks ago they spotted 2 units...4 days ago 6 units, but merely 6k men...i thought it would have been easier... While we found more than 110 AVs, entranched and very well supplies. Our guys got distrupted on the beaches (yes, i had CLs supporting the amphib TFs and several PBs...but, hell, those RAF base forces really destroyed my landing!).
During the landing phases and the bombardment that followed 1300 japanese have been reported in the casualities list. The KB, who was supporting the landing, sent 100 Kates to ground bombing...achieving NOTHING!
I tried a deliberate attack nonetheless on the 7th.... and we got a bloody 1-2 in his favour....ouch

No naval actions in the whole SWPAC sector. My subs aren't spotting a damn thing and so aren't my AMCs...

Mylne Bay has fallen. Now it's time to get to Buna and Lae...but i don't have units to do the job ... Shortland and Tulagi are being reinforced in these days.

SOUTHERN DEI-CELEBES: "the plan" is taking too much time and the american CVs are already positioned far away from my range...now moving southwest between Darwin and Timor. Enemy cruisers are still spotted at Ambon but Kaga's group and Mini-KB didn't move as expected, making only 8 hexes instead of the 12 planned last turn...so we were not in the right position. And it's also sure that he spotted us...already 7 subs are spotted around Menado. I'll push forward for another couple of turns but i bet he will be moved away by the time i arrive.
The 5th Amphib Bde is 2 turns from its invasion site (Tarakan). Kaga's group should provide distant coverage for this landing and a DD flottilla (6 DDs) will guard against those pesky PTs that are guarding the waters around it.
An air HQ will be soon moved to Menado, while 3 SNLFs will be loaded there and will wait for the supporting group for the next push towards Kendari. Ambon won't be invaded immediately. I'm pretty sure he has reinforced it and i don't wanna find another nasty surprise like the one i got at PM.

LUZON-MINDANAO
: In Luzon 2 reinforced regiments have finally reached Manila from Legaspi. Now the enemy is bottled between Clark, Manila and Bataan. What remains of his P-40s did try some oppositions against our air bombings, but the Oscars did get rid of them pretty easily.
At Mindanao our regiments are getting closer. I think in 3/4 turns we should be able to conquer the last enemy redoubts (Cayagan). Those 2 regiments will then be used against Ambon and Balikapan.

SUMATRA: we finally conquered Oosthaven and Djambi (the base producing 250 oil north of Palembang), while our armies are marching towards the western coast where the enemy is retreating. Our paras conquered Sebang. We will transport now a base force so to extend the control of the seas in Indian Ocean.
Muntok (the island in front of Palembang) has been conquered. Soon we'll get all those little islands producing resources in front of Palembang and Singapore.

JAVA: no enemy activity spotted. I'll try to gather some units for an early landing but i don't have much to spare untill Singapore falls...so probably i'll play conservately....Java isn't going anywhere anyway.

MALAYA:: We're almost down to Mersing. The advance has taken more than a month....too much...Had i have better planned this operations things could have gone a lot better...
Singapore is daily bombed by 100 bombers. Flak is a problem even at 10k feet....but we're getting closer and closer....let's hope for the best.

BURMA: the 15th Army is massing at Mouleim, while the Royal Thai Army is trying to flank Pegu. He keeps on sending xAKLs to Rangoon and my Nells keep on sinking them...but he has a lot of them to spare and all those supplies that are flowing to China are well worth the loss of some useless xAKLs

CHINA: here Brad is really statlemating me. I got a couple of bloody noses in southern China. Impatience and overconfidence are terrible friends to deal with for Japan... i lost a base (Tsinkiang) (did i spell it right?!) and i have been stopped in a couple of occasions trying to clean and bottle his armies that are driving me nuts in the southern coast. He clearly knows how to handle the chinese. For the rest everything is quiet...i'm losing so much time deciding what to do that i almost already lost the initiative in this theatre...

Subs: same old story here. Mine aren't spotting a damned ship (WC, PH, Oz or DEI area), while his ones are deadly as ever! They sunk 3 more xAKs during the last 3 turns.... till now i have already lost not less than 50 transports thanks to his subs, and a CA has been damaged

Bad luck - with all the disruption you missed 1-1 odds by one adjusted AV point!
Most of those enemy forces are support troops so you should be able to knock them off next attack.

BTW, it looks like you spelled Tsinkiang right [unless there is a "g" after the first "n"], but for some reason I could not find Mouleim on the map ...
You're not using one of Cap Mandrake's M&M charts, are you?

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR Jan 08, 42

Wow...we were close to a disaster today....allied SS Swordfish put a torp in Kaga's belly north of Menado and later in the day another one in a CA's belly, part of Kaga's escort.... luckly both of them were dudes....

Those are risky waters and Q-Ball's ability to use his subs even with the dud rate is incredible!....and it' really driving me mad....

PM is a fortress. No matter how hard i hit it...it seems to be made of steel!!! I sent 200 crack bombers to pound the base and the troops.... look at the results!!!...this mod really changes things when dealing with air-to-ground bombing!...hopefully this will work both ways when 4Es will come around

American cruisers moved back to Timor and his CVs disappeared from my radars... kaga now leads a mini-KB composed of 200 planes...not bad! she, along with 3 strong SCTFs, will shield the advance of my apmhib TFs towards Kendari-Ambon. In 3 turns we should be able to move 100 betties to Menado...loaded with torps...this should keep Brad at bay in the area....

In China more bloody noses...he's outmanouvreing (sp!?) me everywhere, gaining time to fortify his positions...
