Units to be re-sized: write these down

Yamada Det S-2 - Claudes @ Soc Trang - to Zero and re-size options are 27, 36 or 45
Yamada Det S-1 - Zero @ Soc Trang - to 27, 36, or 45
Bako NGD Det T-1 - Vals @ Pescadore - to 27
These three can be done at CamRahn Bay when Kaga comes back in to re-load torpedoes. Fly off her own planes and then these groups come on (some need PP spent). Details can follow if needed on how to do this.

Kawai Det - Claudes @ Peleliu - to 27, 36, or 45
Use the CVE/CVLs that come into Babeldoab

Some of these units are withdrawn in 2/42 or 4/42, but you can train some pilots up while the units are used in combat.

All important points to make Michael. Many players don't know this tip of resizing land based carrier capable units into larger units via resizing. The only that can't are those that have their own organic resize. (Or Permanently restricted)

Also - you should remind GreyJoy about changing some bases to allow Resticted air units from Japan (okinawa etc.)

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR Dec 11, 41

...my TF was sunk and the base force gone.

Just remember to go into "Destroyed Ground Units" on the Intel screen and buy it back. It will show up in a few months virtually empty and need to be filled with men and equipment.

The Chinese are tough when massed, especially if they can gain some experience by overwhelming small (too small) Japanese armies. So, the first thing to attend to in China is to make sure that your main cities that are subject to being attack have garrisons large enough to hold off any group of Chinese that can reach them before reinforcments can arrive. Make sure that your MLR is tight and strong. That's even more important than going on the offensive. But once you know where Steve's big stack is, you'll be better able to find isoalted Chinese positions that you can hit strongly.

If he's got a massive army at Ichang, then Chenghow/Sian sector should be fairly weak right now. Also, Nanning/Liuchow to the south of Changhsha should be weak. So, attend to your ring of bases within striking distance of Ichang while also gathering strong armies on either or both wings.

The Chinese have a hard time mainting fighters on the front lines due to lack of supply. If Q-Ball commits fighters to a base with low suplpy, he risks disablement and never being able to get the fighter airworthy again. He can handle fighters at Changsha and Chungking, but Sian, Ichang, Liuchow, Kweilin and Nanning should be different propositions altogether.

The Allied airforce can fight well defensively, but Japan has a chance at breaking the back of the RAF in 1942. RAF fighter numbers are so low that Japan can win a war of attrition. So attrit him even if you're not getting a sexy 3:1 or 2:1 ratio of kills. Keep the pressure up under circumstacnes as favorable to you as possible.

In China i'm still clearing the inner lines of my perimeter...wanna get rid of all those damned chinese units that keep on occupying my supply lines....
But yes, i'll try to manouver, i'll try to overwhelm him in the air...i'll try to do like Rader..."always the hammer".

Let's see... now the main concerns are Force Z (and the survival of Kaga and Ryuho) and the presence of Cl Boise and CA Houston in front of my Mindanao invasion fleet.... sweating...

My experience (and recently marbakka's) is that Force Z is a paper tiger against a SCTF that included cruisers and DDs. Their big guns are dangerous but long lance torps usually get the first hits and after that Force Z is dead meat. I consider the American CAs and CLs more dangerous because their speed enables them to dash in and out with little chance to catch them.

Fun reading so far. I don't have much to add but to reinforce what Canoerebel said. You know from experience how pitiful Allied air replacments are in 42. If he stands and fights use any chance you can to engage and kill off Allied aircraft. Even 3-2 trade in his favor works to your advantage. As the Allies, I remember that even being very careful with my air force I had to strip a lot of fighters out of rear units, and this really slows down training. And don't be afraid to take losses and bomb airbases where you suspect he has heavy bombers.

Subscribified to this!

I had popped in to look at Q-Ball's AAR earlier as well, but have decided I want to actively participate in this one so I'm banishing myself from the other AAR from here on out in a desire to protect the OpSec of both sides.

I also plan on trying to catch up tonight with the GreyJoy Drinking Game...

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR Dec 12, 41

I made a couple of mistakes based on my previous experiences...but it seems that everything changed in this game

Let's go with order...

We ecountered the Boise south of Mindanao... our DDs performed poorly again...not a single torpedo hit and they never closed range.... We lost the Hatsuharu DD against the Boise....
Then we sent CL Kashii near Tarakan, hoping to find his fleeing TFs.... lone raiders did a great job for Rader and even my DDs weren't able to sustain his lone CLs.... we found the CL Marblehead, escorted by 4 old US DDs.... not a single hit from my ship...and we got a torp and several hits that sent our pround ship to the bottom....
2 of our DDs tangled near Jolo against 2 of his old DDs....again not a single hit!...really bad luck (or bad leaders, don't know).

Kashii and two other IJN CLs were outdated trainers only capable of 18 knots. They are meat against anything and really only useful as early war invasion TF escorts. Had you found soft skins with her you would have done ok, it was worth a shot. The real killer of the fleeing Manila ships are CVLs and the three CAs that start with them. Of course, that's probably why Houston, Boise and Marblehead are in the zip code - hoping you detach the CAs and he catches your CVLs at night. If not, he bags a small invasion or two. Either way, Q is happy.

The trick is to find the ships nearby in daytime with CVLs before they use their pitiful torpedo allotment. Hard to do but possible. Worst case you then slaughter the fleeing merchies.

Don't feel too bad about daily progress. Try to have phase lines you are hoping to reach by the first, 15th or 30th of each month. That's a better way to measure total progress as the daily results will fluctuate.

As for the propagation of baby GreyJoys, well, umm, no comment on that other to slowly back away.

i don't really care much, a part for the phsycological aspect, about the merchants fleeing Manila...they aren't that worth anyway and the allies got so many merchants that those cannot be my targets. Problem is that i haven't sunk anything of any value so far...not a single warship...a part from 2 DDs....very very few. QBall clearly knows what to do and how to do.

Now it's time to expand into CENTPAC and SOPAC. The KB will be enough for that.

Thanks Crib!

Yeah, the stuff at Manila worth getting is the subs, AS and other tenders and a few big transports.

Remember Nemo's ideas on SCTF composition and you'll do fine. Basically match speed and gun range for the most efficient task forces, and not too big.

You'll have to fight that feeling of being behind. You aren't. It's too ealry yet. But if you yield to that feeling, you'll grow desperate to "regain" your timing, in which case you'll do risky things that won't work. So relax. It's early. Keep playing boldly but don't take unreasonable risks. Look for a chance to pounce or for luck to favor you with a break, then take advantage of it.

As for Ichang. Big deal. You lost 142 squads. That's nothing. Retire the division and let it recover. Make sure the Japanese army is in good defensive terrain when it fights. If Q-Ball creates monster armies, make sure you have strongly fortified bases any which way his army might move. If he has a monster army at Ichang, he's going to have some weak points elsewhere.

Wise words, as always, my friend.

At Ichang i was overconfident...i thought the chinese couldn't defeat a division behind 3 forts...lesson learnt!

And you're right. Let's stay calm. Don't get nervous. Don't lose your mind.

stay focused!

Thanks CR, my mind-coach

GreyJoy, if you have not read Adm Spruance's AAR against Erstad and studied what he was able to with the Chinese Army against a player very experienced with the ground combat system, you should....

I have had a full japanese corps kicked out of X2 terrain by an opponent who massed most of his forces in Central China. The Chinese can put a 5,000 AV Army together in about 30 days. With the numerous Corps level and Army Level HQs, he can get significant HQs related bonuses on the attack. Do not to let him get significant supply to Rangoon and suck it into China or you will have a very hard fight. In the long run though, you can wear him down by massing your armor, constantly fighting under decent conditions and using air power; however, you need to ship a lot of supply to China to repair all your disabled squads.

Remember Field Marshal Slim's philosophy on the use of armor (or armour), "The more you use, the less you lose."

GreyJoy, regarding your ASW efforts. Keep in mind, at this early stage in the war, you really shouldn't even be worried about sinking Q-Ball's subs (or even hitting them). Simply detecting them will keep them from making an attack during that phase. Keep them under water for now, and the sinkings will come later when your pilot training picks up and you get your sub-hunting aircraft sorted out. Just don't let up on patrolling where you're in range.

DD Classes:

These five Classes are your front line DDs that are good warships (use in SC & CV TF).
Hatsukaru - Spd 31 - 6000 Endur - 5x 12.7cm guns - 6TT
Shirutsuyu - Spd 32 - 6000 Endur - 5x 12.7cm guns - 8TT
Kagero - Spd 33 - 5000 Endur - 6x 12.7cm guns - 8TT
Yugumo - Spd 33 - 5000 Endur - 6x 12.7cm guns - 8TT
Akatsuki - Spd 33 - 4750 Endur - 6x 12.7cm guns - 9TT

These two Classes need an upgrade before use in front line duty. Can be used, but notice their shortcomings.
Mutsuki - Spd 35 - 4000 Endur - 4x 12.7cm guns - 6TT - (NO AA guns!)
Fubuki - Spd 33 - 4000 Endur - 6x 12.7cm guns - 9TT - (NO ASW!)

These four Classes are for use ONLY as transport escorts, IMO.
Kamikaze - Spd 35 - 3600 Endur - 4x 12.7cm guns - 6TT - (convert to APDs)
Minekaze - Spd 35 - 2500 Endur - 4x 12.7cm guns - 6TT - (convert to APDs)
Momi - Spd 32 - 3000 Endur - 3x 12.7cm guns - 4TT
Wakatake - Spd 33 - 3000 Endur - 2x 12.7cm guns - 4TT
