Linky to the USNI memorial on him.

Ernest Borgine or to most of us of a certain age LCDR Quinton McHale passed away today at the age of 95. Earnest Borgine was an actual US Navy veteran, he enlisted in 1935 and served through out WW2 as a Gunners Mate primarly on the USS Lamberton, DD-119; device 4323 according to the editor of the stock SCN1.

The Lamberton was escorting the USS Minneapolis from Pearl to Oahu gun ranges on 7Dec, after that the Lamberton was esocrting ships in and around the fleet anchorages. After that she went to escort convoys during the Aluetians operations from 1942 till 1943 and then finished out her career as a target tow out of either San Diego, Mare Island or Pearl Harbor. At the end of the war she operated as a training auxillary until sold in Bermerton for scrap in 1946.

After leaving the Navy in 1946, Borgine went home to Connecticut and tried out for stage plays there, which lead to some plays in Virginia and then finally to Broadway in NYC as a Nurse during the run of Harvey. Going to LA he landed a big break playing the stockade SGT in "From Here to Eternity" and that lead to McHale, Marty, and slew of other Film/TV roles.

Hard to see he's gone.. From here on, PTs in "my" South Pacific will remember him whenever on patrol.

You all know that there is a Lt CMDR. Quinton McHale as one of your naval leaders in the game?

My wife and I have put "Marty" on our Netflix list.

He was a great supporter of the US Navy memorial. I met him there a couple of times. Unlike most celebs, he was a truly nice guy, very personable. He will be missed.

Yea I know, at the time I was writing this my baby was complaining to me at a full level of 11 about the heat wave we are experiencing, my mind was still asleep, and being warm myself it all looked good on the initial pass.

As a child of the 70's I grew up with McHale's Navy reruns and felt the genuine warmth the guy had. Then as a young adult watching him in From Here to Eternity, Marty, and a personal favorite, Ice Station Zebra, I learned what a great actor he was. Reading the obits and seeing the outpouring anecdotes and love for him, I realize what a good man he was.

/salute!

Oh and here is a McHale's Navy Singalong - even Old Lead Bottom gets in on the act!

Sad news. I loved Mchale's navy as a kid and still do. I recently got the fourth and final season on DVD to complete my collection.

Marty will make you cry. You don't have to admit it though. Just pretend you got something in your eye.

There is always a lot of dust in the air when Marty is on.
