My friends, actually I have never intended to start a discussion on the worldwide distribution of geopolitical knowledge.

I hope I did not hurt anyones pride by telling funny stories of US citizens ignorance of Austria as a country, and I hereby swear that
my national pride as an Austrian citizen was never hurt, just because people get confused about where I am from.
I love being in the United States, my cousin lives there, and I always look forward to the next time I have a chance to visit.

The USA is simply different by being located on a continent which is home of exactly three countries. Contrary to Europe, where the
names an whereabouts of the different European nations belong to the first things you are taught in school, you Yankees learn about
your different states and the two neighbouring countries.

Same thing, similar dimensions, different label. No real need for an extended debate here.

jmalter: Germany IS autobahn heaven. But NOT if you are driving a van with a trailer limited to 80km/h. It feels just a bit uncomfortable driving
at that speed while you are passed by tuned BMWs easily doing 240. Those guys racers usually got 2 seconds to change lanes after I move into view.
Made that experience, no desire to repeat.

Yankee Mac, tbh much written on the history of the Austro-Hungarian empire sadly is boring. It might be that the cross of an Austrian with a historian
results in something resembling a very sad Valium overdose. It is quite a tedious search to find interesting stories behind mountains of dates and designations,
listed without any fantasy or story.

What I can reccommend is:

The Good Soldier Svejk and His Fortunes in the World, written by Jaroslav Hasek (a story about a very eager czech soldier in the K.u.K. empire)

Everything written by Arthur Schnitzler. Just google the name. All his novels take place in the fin de siecle epoche close to the end of the empire.
(he is the great great grandfather of my best friend by the way)

and

Requiem für eine Monarchie. Die Zerschlagung Österreich - Ungarns by Francois Fejtö, sadly I have no idea if it has ever been translated into English.

Will see if I find something more elabourate but still interesting.

@Yankee Mac
I have heard good things about this, but didn't read it:
The Habsburg Monarchy, 1809-1918 : A History of the Austrian Empire and Austria-Hungary by A. J. P. Taylor
(but some people said it would be a little difficult as an introduction into the matter, wheres some said it would be the perfect first book... )

My own collection that I put together at university is basically made of chapters of books, dissertations, bachelor studies and scripts. I've put them in order and into binders (for my own private use ofc.). I would have to check to see if there is a book mentioned in there that I could wholeheartedly recommend.

But as LoBaron said the most of the books that contain useful and correct information are a boring read for everybody that isn't a complete history nut and also most of them are unreadable if you don't have prior knowledge.

@LoBaron: Its definitely a Tegethoff-Class so I would say its the SMS Viribus Unitis? (or are Austrians excluded from the quiz? (^^,) ).

Ah not at all.

But also not surprizing that you were the first hit close to the mark.
Its the classes name patron, SMS Tegethoff.

Wonder how many yankees know or care that little Austria once sailed the 6th largest navy of the world...not that it achieved much.

Pride of the Adriatic

Hey! Back then, without pollution and algae, the Adriatic had - nearly - blue water. So the K.u.K. Kriegsmarine was - nearly - a blue water navy.

still some great and absolutely marvelous places in Croatia... excellent water quality and BLUE water...

CT is absolutely right Croatia still has some great places. And blue water.

So now: If we can bring THIS:

down the Danube, into the Black Sea, through the Bosporus, into the Aegean Sea and then up the Adriatic...

Actually this just makes me really, really sad.

There is this greek island which wants to join Austria. How far is that going? Maybe you'll have a new state soon, with the need for a real Austrian navy.

Well, North America actually has 10 countries, but that's a minor point (it extends all the way down to Panama). Welcome to the community!

LoBaron:  No offense taken on my part.  Its and interesting conversation.  I enjoy hearing about other countries and cultures.  Austria is one I don't hear much about.  So I am all ears.

No offense taken, LoBaron.

Your second paragraph here has the measure of truth to it. We aren't geographically ignorant (in spite of the label applied to us by many Europeans and Canadians), it's just different knowledge and a different focus in our educational system. It's 'different' knowledge, not that one or the other is uneducated.

When one of my Canadian friends chides me about the poor American understanding of Canadian geography (Canadian humor television programs have had 'ask ignorant Americans' segments that rankle my sensibilities), I'll quickly ask them back what's the capital of a US state with the population of their whole bleedin' country. Few Canadians know that the state capital of California (pop. circa 31MM) is Sacramento or that Florida's (population circa 19.1MM) is Tallahassee.

In other words, we're all ignorant about something...what that something is is a matter of perspective.

I only went to Austria once - to Zeltweg for the Austrian Grand Prix (the classic old circuit before they ruined it) in the days of turbo-charged Grand Prix cars.

The circuit is in the Styrian mountains - on the site of an old WWII airfield (we stayed in the beautiful city of Graz).

Stefan Johannson had hit a stray deer (ouch) at about 100 miles an hour on the Friday, totally shredding the hapless animal, while on the Saturday, practice began with a thunderstorm of Wagnerian proportions. The cloud was so low you could not see the tops of the mountains, and the sky was a forbidding battleship grey colour. What a magnificent setting for a Grand Prix!!

For sheer ball-bouncing beauty I would rate Austria approx 9.5 / 10 - beautiful.

Just in case that comment was directed towards me, and just so there is no misunderstanding, I did not comment on the general state of American geographic ignorance, which I suspect is little different the world over. I did try to say that the use of the word interesting was inappropriate.

Austria may be small, but on so many levels she is a country that people should know of - that they don't (whoever they may be) is sad.

LoBaron -

As I am unable to copy and paste the address (not sure why...)

The first of the series is entitled "Tomorrow the World: In which Cadet Prohaska Carries the Habsburg Empire's Civilizing Mission to the Entirely Unreceptive Peoples of Africa and Oceana" (The Otto Prohaska Novels)

Now. How can a unrepentant, United States Marine, who spent six years on board a ship - while spreading peace and good will throughout the world resist a title like that...?

Hope that this helps!

Yankee Mac

This is only natural and understandable, knowledgable Yankee-Mac.

Already found and ordered:

Tomorrow The World
The Two-Headed Eagle
The Emperor's Coloured Coat
A Sailor of Austria

Again, thank you for pointing me to the series! Very much apprechiated!

LoBaron -

I am on Book 2 - The Emperor's Colored Coat, and have not been disappointed - they are absolutely outstanding.

Am very pleased that you took the plunge...!

Mac

well hey, how many citizens of Salzburg/Innsbruck could place Wheeling WV on a map?

i made a coupla' drives from Munich to Verona back in '96, cutting thru the western tip of Austria. i wouldn't have noticed, 'cept that Aus wasn't totally part of the EU at the time, and passport checks were required at the borders.

still, i learned about Aust desserts at the rest-stop (yum!) and about the German autobahn sign that meant 'unlimited speed'. Ughfortunately, our rent-a-Fiat topped out at ~185km/hr, even so, it's about the loveliest landscape on the planet.

wow 185km/hr, between the screaming and the grabbing on to stuff how did you happen to notice the landscape blurring by... Yessereee I'll keep my old folks speeds here thank you very much - 55 MPH who in their right minds wants to fly at that speed down the highway. You young whipper snappers miss all the good stuff just zooming around every where you go all the time...

Most interestingly hardly anyone in Austria knows "Sound of Music".

Good movie, even though Julie Christie didn't have those pneumatic gams.

Most interestingly hardly anyone in the US knows where Austria is, and why.

Most definitely had my share of polite "Ah, yes...wonderful...Austria...thats where the Kangaroos are from!?" when I visited the US.

While were at it: An aunt of mine avoided a traffic ticket for speeding on a Texas highway a couple of years ago simply by opening her eyes wide in astonishment
and sayng: "How did you measure my speed? Radar? Unbelievable! These technological advancements in your wonderful country never cease to
amaze me. We do not have this stuff in Austria" The cop according to the story gently explained her how he used his radar gun to track her car, and
then let her go with a very proud look on his face.

Well, for being only a consonant and a vowel apart from that other country, you can't blame us for some of the confusion. Would you be a little confused between the difference between someone from the Democratic People's Republic of Korea versus the Republic of Korea? How about the Democratic Republic of the Congo versus the Republic of the Congo? And those are entire words difference between the two examples.

Also, your population is about 8.9 MM. Compare it to our own state of Virginia-population of 8.1MM. Do you think that all Austrians are clear on the difference between Virginia and West Virginia? I'm sure that maybe some [chuckle] Austrian somewhere who trips up these terms.

Anyways, no one's out to persecute Austria or mistake them for another continent. Maybe if you guys changed your country's name though-there'd be less confusion? I propose "Chickenboyland". Try it-you might like it.

How about Rebel and Yank?

I just realized I posted three threads one after another. Sorry guys.

LoBaron and StK -

Thank you for your reading recommendations, they are added to the list.

Stk - I am a history nut, no book is boring when one loves the subject matter...!

Also included: The Army of Francis Joseph (Rothenberg).

What has impressed me the most, is the fact that while Austria - Hungary was an Ally of Imperial Germany, Austria Hungary had a very different attitude and approach when dealing with the multi national / ethnic composition within it's armed forces.

A wide range of ethnic backgrounds, but managed to get along reasonably well - much more accommodating and cooperative than Imperial Germany's approach. I am not criticizing - a historian once stated that "nothing is more unfair than to criticize events and attitudes that occurred almost a century ago".

Again - love the books.

Thanks,

Mac

I'm currently house sitting for a friend of mine and found this gem on his hdd (which makes me spend a lot more time at his place whenever I have time, which upsets my girlfriend a little).
I don't think I ever played a game before that was so intriguing and frustrating at the same time . It's a challenge I like it (but it could be a lot more beginner-friendly with just a few tweaks).
I saw several people from Austria (which is where I'm from) in this forum so I have a question: Is there a reasonable way to buy a boxed version of this game or do I have to get the download one?

I might have a lot of questions later, but for now I will use the search function for several days and watch the "tutorial" vids (ty n01487477) and read some AARs (ty to all the people who make the effort), because there is no need to waste other peoples time if I can help it.

@Dixie: It is a rather good picture of a very nice plane, isn't it? (^^,)
And I have to say I like your signature very much, too. A picture of the Death of Rats would look good as well.. maybe as an avatar? (^^,)
