Status: offline 		With the game on hold while John and I were both involved with family matters, I had a most interesting day yesterday.

On Wednesday and Thursday, my wife and I helped move her elderly great-uncle to a nursing home. The nursing home environment was (at it always is to us who are still relatively young and healthy) sad and sobering. As a private way of contrasting life at 55 to the sad spectacle of the nursing home, yesterday I decided to do a 20-mile day hike in the Cohutta Wilderness Area. It was exceedingly hot and the hike began with a stiff 2,000 foot climb up Big Frog Mountain. By mile ten I was out of gas. At mile 16 I reached Jacks River Falls, which has the best swimming hole in Georgia. I swam awhile and then took a two-hour nap, which gave me just enough energy to finish the last four miles. It was a long, tough day, but worth every ache and pain.

I'm not sure I have too many more years of 20-mile hikes during the summer, but I bet I can do it for at least another decade during the cool seasons. I hope.

John is attending to the next turn, I think, so perhaps we resume the game today. I think he's suffering morale problems. The Allies are making progress towards overcoming the enemy's will to fight. :)

Status: offline 		A 20 mile hike with a 2000 ft vertical in hot (and presumably humid weather) doesn't sound like fun to me.

You seemed to hint that you were trying to prove something.

Status: offline 		I think that's a part of the mix. I hike because I love the woods. But one of the pleasures in the testing is that the soreness, the exhaustion, the encounters with ticks and wild boars, etc. prove that we're alive.

Status: offline 		John is having computer problems with the new turn. One proposal is to back up a turn to before the great Judy slaughter and play that turn again. I'm not real excited about undoing a turn that resulted in a meeting engagement that went the Allies' way. So, when I visit my office this afternoon, I'll open the pre-send save, issue another order or two to shuffle the deck a bit, and re-send.

Morale.

Status: offline 		Those not involved in PBEM perhaps aren't aware of the many subtleties involved in the exchange of turns that can tip you off to your opponent's mindset. Especially when, as here, John and I have faced off since Uncommon Valor days.

In 1941 into 1943, John is aggressive in his play and in his turn-flipping. He will send turns often, try to make arrangements ahead of time to schedule times when I'm available to flip turns, and is prompt in checking with me if I don't flip a turn immediately (which is rare, because I may be more rabid than him in playing this narcotic-like game).

It's much different later in the game or as things really sour. I'm sure this is true for many IJ players. It must be very hard to transition from "I have the initiative and all the goodies" to "I enjoy taking punishment." In this phase, John drags out turns over many days for many reasons (some of them legitimate, but many of them a reflection of his flagging morale). He become non-communicative, often forgetting to send emails to say when he won't be available or why he'll be holding the turn for one or two or six days. And he sometimes says he'll send a turn at such-n-such a time, only to then delay a day or two or three without apologizing or offering any explanation whatsoever.

If I was a newer player, I might get anxious about the lack of courtesy (sometimes) and the lack of turn around (increasingly often). But in this case it's just proof of tangible progress in reducing the Evil Emperor's will to fight. That's just very satisfying after the "Banzai!" fest of '42, '42, and first half of '43. It's fun to just relax and let the turns come when they may.

Status: offline 		Ticks are hideous. I pulled about ten off yesterday - all crawling, none attached. Spring and early summer are tick season in the south, but the mountains aren't nearly as bad as the piedmont section of Georgia. When I worked in the timber industry in the '80s, there were days when I came home with hundreds of ticks on my clothing. Seriously. Hundreds. It was the stuff of nightmares.

In fairness, John was stretched awfully thin with three games.

But there is a lot of truth in getting pounded day in day out, but the game can still be really fun. Proper mindset.

I would not consent to a re-do unless Michael M has been unable to fix whatever the problem is.
That slaughter of Judys and Jills pretty much guaranteed that KB will not try to contest your DS even if he has lots of LBA support.
You pulled a smart move doubling back a few hexes and should reap the benefits IMO.

Status: offline 		At 1:30 John sent an email that he was doing a few chores and would attend to the turn shortly. The next word comes at 9:30: the turn file is corrupted and we'll have to back up; that "it should be easy since I've already issued the orders once."

In actuality, the turn took hours and hundreds of clicks. I switched the home port of all my TFs and ships from Sorong to Boela, changed the orders for many TFs to go to Boela, some to unload and some not to, some to disband in port others not to. Then the herd itself was set to move to a different hex with lots of ships following. There were adjustments to all carrier fighters to cover at certain ranges and perccentages. Some TFs refueled. There was a complicated process of creating little TFs to refuel (only ships that needed fuel so that those that don't wouldn't suck it up). So I separated TFs, refueled ships, and then went back through to place those ships back in the proper TFs. And that's just what was going on in the immediate vicinity of Boela.

The turn took hours, so I suggested to John that it would take him less time to reinstall the game; or that I would be glad to run the combat replay file if he sends me his password. In that event, I'd avert my eyes and press "escape" whenever a menu report popped up. Then we could determine whether it's the file that's corrupted or the computer that's the problem.

As a last resort, I'll back up a turn, but it'll take hours with no guarantees that will solve the problem.

Morale.

Status: offline 		Yeah. I'll try that next if he comes back with reluctance to do one of the first two options. My hesitation is that it'll take some time for a neutral party to load the game since it's a mod and an outdated on at that. Rather than impose on somebody, I suppose I'll reissue the orders. But man, that'll be a headache. The orders were entered Tuesday - probably 750 to 1000 clicks. No doubt I'll overlook all kinds of things.

Status: offline 		Bill, if it would help you see how quickly you can install the correct version, I can send you my current "turn-in-progress" save and the "corrupted next turn" save, along with my password. That will allow you to open the turn in progress (I have no problem opening it on my computer) and see if everything looks right. If it does, then you can run the "next turn" and see if it crashes on your end.

Or is there a better way?

Status: offline 		If the turn is OK on your side (you can check by trying to load it after you've closed out the orders - if it asks for John's password it should be OK), then it's possible that it's getting corrupted somewhere in the upload/download process via email.

So we know it isn't the file that's the problem, which means John can fix it on his end and I don't have to spend two hours re-clicking all the things that were clicked.

This report is based solely upon the written combat report, so I'll probably post an addendum once I've gotten the turn file and can see what's where, what hazards are out there, and what the opportunities are.

Big Tent: John sends a bombardment TF against Sorong, but it apparently hanges up there and gets targeted by massed strikes from Death Star. Unfortunately, the American pilots do an incredibly poor job of aiming - especially the TBFs with the torps - so that the enemy escapes scathed but not hammered. John loses three precious (at this point) DDs. BB Ise is hurt enough that she abandons her mission. Mutsu and Arashio complete the mission to little effect. John will breathe a sigh of relief but will also be incredibly frustrated that the BBs stood still. This turn, combined with the previous Judy slaughter, frustrates but doesn't cripple him.

Meanwhile, Death Star expends many sorties and lots of torps, leaving her less robust. I'm going to take a hard look at Boela to see if I can chance posting the CVEs there in an effort to replenish torps, sorties, and missing fighters. If that works tomorrow, then I can consider giving the CVs a try.

There were only a few ineffective enemy LBA sorties that do nothing - some target Morotai's airfield and some Allied shipping at and near Boela. No sign of KB in the combat report. So John didn't close to give battle, which is perhaps significant in revealing his mindset or KB's current strength.

I'll be most interested in seeing how many strat-loaded troops came ashore at Boela. How soon can I reload to invade Ambon and/or Namlea? How do supply and fuel look? Did the AE replenish the combat ships there? Is Death Star still okay to give battle or do I have to take a more defensive posture?

There is a possibility that John is now focusing on Morotai and Sorong. If these bases, which are significant, distract him from some of the weaker bases, that's good. The Allies are in good shape at the moment, but this op is just getting started. It's going to take a long time to unload supply and fuel and to give the engineers time to build these bases big enough to withstand a strong enemy counterattack. The carriers will leave eventually, but probably not in the next three to four weeks. Maybe not before year's end.

Third Ring: Allied 4EB hit Port Moresby hard. I think Horn Island is close more or less permanently, with only occasional attention needed. Merauke is a tougher nut, but soon the 4EB will target it in strength.

Status: offline 		John is getting a bit predictable. he loves sending his BB's in to bombard landings. I guess the plan was you were supposed to juke towards the KB and he would get his guys in and out. Poor shooting on you part saved him here. Tremendous strike coordination getting that many planes on target. Whoever is training you Torpedo planes on the west coast needs to be replaced and reassigned to target towing duty. CA's are deadly in these waters but if I recall you are both pretty tapped out in that department. Good job staying on mission.
