ORIGINAL: Chickenboy I think the second amendment is anathema to many Europeans in particular-of all our Bill of Rights. It's just a foreign concept to many of them that this country can be awash in guns and that's the way we likes it. If you think about American history (vis a vis the Revolutionary War), the development of the American West and the independence movement in general, it makes perfect sense. But you've got to understand our history, the reasons for the amendment and why it's still very much relevant in today's society. Hard for most outsiders to fathom, I'd venture. It is the fact that so much of this history of the War Where You Told Britain To Shove Off and the Conquista of the American West is a manufactured legend that makes it hard to fathom. Rather like the Americans are a primitive tribe who produce and worship their own legends for their own purposes. Follow the money. The American War for Independence was remarkable for a number of reasons: *** it was the first time that a colony was able to successfully overthrow its colonial master *** a small non-professional army, and tiny navy was able to outlast the strongest empire in the world, with the largest navy. *** it then managed to form (with some difficulty) a government that has lasted now for more than 200 years. warspite1 I beg to differ. Was it that remarkable? Britain was a billion miles away, with a ridiculously small army at the best of times, the colonists were not alone - the French, Dutch, Spanish..... Not to denigrate what the US has done since of course, but the actual War of Independence was not that remarkable a victory given the circumstances. Weak as water.
