Grotius: I had to move some Claudes to my CV-TF to get that 1% of more CAP protection. I had enough space on my CV's to do that so I thought what the hell, why not. ;) My Claudes propably saved the day and I sunk Ross'es CV with no hits on my shipping - so a logical answer to your question would be that they did their job well and deserve a upgrade.

Mogami: Thanks for your advice. I'm usually very careful and I double-check everything before submitting my turn, especially when conducting CV-operations. I had a few drinks yesterday so I'll put this on a slight hangover. ;)

--[CLiP]--

Suddenly my CV-TF decides to react to enemy carriers. Again,
my pulse is 160 and I start sweating like a yankee pig as I thought Ross might have gotten new some carriers as reinforcements. This was not the case and I'm quite baffled why a single CV is floating around here. I guess I managed to score much more damage on Yorktown than I expected and Ross was moving it to a Noumea to be shipped for Pearl.

PM is now at 100% and I can keep it so with a small effort.

Hi, I'll bet sinking that lone ML raised the night experiance of those USN ships by around 20 points.
I always look for easy battles as USN to gain experiance in.
(Comes in handy later when USN has radar)

Dr Who, if you have room, I might be able to begin another PBEM game in a week or two. (several of my PBEM games should end soon)
You can have Japanese scenario 19 Historical Sub doctrine. USN damage control, FOW on Auto Sub off. Variable, Japanese 200 Allies 100

Nomad: Uhmm.. No, the location is actually Luganville harbour.

Mogami: I'll compleately wipe you out with those settings so let's look at something more realistic, ok? Would you be interested in a scenario dealing with the latter part of the South Pacific-campaign, with some tweaking of the IJN reinforcements to give you a good clean fight?

Hi, The idea is to see just how far a good Japanese player can go in scenario 19 with 200 percent. I don't really care if you "wipe"
me out.
While I don't believe historical scenarios should be balanced
(It's smoke em if you got em, if not, "No wonder they lost the war")
Personally I don't think scenario 17 (The historic May 1st condition) Gives the Japanese enough ponies. (I'll try scenario 17
with 200 percent Japanese ship commitment next)
But scenario 19 has a lot of air and ground units the Japanese never see in scenario 17.

Oh, I'm not afraid of no ghost.

I had to skip a few days of AAR posting just in case some of my words would betray me to Ross who surely also reads this.

2 turns ago I spotted two USN CV's supported by atleast one CA and 5 DD's 19 hex SE of GG.

As I was just in the middle of moving my transport TF's to PM this was most worrying. I was sure that I had taken out the USN ability to use carriers for a reasonable timeframe so I could take PM with just one small supporting CV-TF consisting of 2*CV and one CVE. The rest of my air assets ware spread around doing various other tasks, mostly bombarding Port Moresby from Lae.

It wouldn't be possible to ship another CV-TF to protect my Port Moresby invasion force. So, I quicky moved all available air assets to Gili Gili which is now a size 3 airfield. I stationed 149 Zeros, Vals and Kates there with escort and Naval attack as missions.

I moved my CV-TF 2 hex West of Gili Gili, right on the shoreline.
This was my trap. I hoped Ross would move his CV-TF close enough to GG so that GG air-assets could atleast give him a pounding before my CV's would close down for the kill. And my plan worked even better than I had hoped:

We kick off with actiong around Luganville that's still in my hands. Ross is hitting a lot of mines in Luganville harbour as he's moving troops there with a transport-TF. I'm going to lose it but Ross is going to pay a heavy price for it.

Ross is doing his best. One thing I actually would like to have in UV/WiTP is the possibility that I could "sack" a given place if I wanted to. Right now Luganville is badly damaged, but it has about 5k Sup and 10k fuel. I'd like to burn them before I lose the hex.

One might say that sending 15k fresh IJN buddies to throw Ross out of Buna is overkill because you could do it with time and Captain Starvation but I'm not taking any chances.

AP Arizona Maru was already badly damaged from Ross'es previous sub-attack against it so she was left behind as bait in Buna harbour. No loss as the IJN has stacks of AP's & AK's and I've lost something like 6 so far in the game.

Has anyone else noticed that Vals and Kates gain EXP quite fast when they attack ground targets? Or am I just getting the feeling out of nowhare?

Nutin' special happening, I'm cleaning up New Guinea and plotting more operations against Ross. I spot USN DD's 10-12 Hexes away of GG or Lunga doing some sort of weird stuff and this turn Ross had the nerve to send a single DD to Lunga harbour.

The situation so far:

IJN has basically steamrolled the USN so far suffering no losses to speak about. IJN controls everything North of the line PM-GG-Lunga and can throw hell against any attempt to penetrate this line with LBA's and the full might of the Combined Fleet.

USN shipping sunk for 1977 points:

4 x CV (Lexington, Yorktown, Enterprise and Hornet)
5 x CA (Pensacola, Salt Lake City, New Orleans, Astoria and Australia)
1 x CL (Hobart)
15 x DD
4 x PG
1 x DMS
4 x MSW
6 x SS
20 x SC
15 x AK

IJN shipping sunk for 267 points:

1 x CS (Chyoda)
1 x CL (Tatsuta)
2 x ML
3 x TK
1 x AO
3 x SS
10 x AK

Situation on points now USN 3479 vs 8547 IJN.

Nothing much to report as I forgot to post this before I played my turn against dascateer. Still giving Ross hell on earth.

Ross aproached me on how do I get my floatplanes to attack shipping with the pretext that people have been asking him how do I do it.. ;) Why has no-one asked from me?

I was 100% positively sure I'd catch a nice 'n undefended transport TF at Cairns. My intelligence chief in charge of submitting me reports based on Naval Search aircraft was sacked accordingly. My aircrews at Lae are enjoying themselves flying Sweep against US troops. Experience is soaring.

This is true....

I am the one that asked ross.

Why did I ask ross? I asked him because I have known him for quite a few years now and converse with him on other boards involving a different game. So, I thought I'd ask him what level you were flying your float planes at, because I've never seen someone get so many hits before with float planes.

So if you want to answer what level you're flying your float planes at for the their bombing missions, I'd appreciate at it since ross didn't know.

I guess that I've already reaped all the possible benefits out of my floatplane tactic so I propably can reveal the secret behind it.

I fly my long-range floatplanes at 10kft and 100% Naval Search. I fly my shorter-range floatplanes (Petes or Daves) at 1kft, Naval Attack and 0% search. I try to use them in wolfpacks, ie 2-3 AV's scouting targets and all availabe CS's behind them ready to close for the kill. If I have the possibility I have AO's in my third line to fuel the AV's and CS's.

If I feel _really_ evil and I know that my adversory is going to do something about the seaplane threat, this being usually one or two CV's sent against my CS's & AV's, I station a strong carrier strike force somewhare close enough to ambush and sink enemy carriers.

Floatplanes... Remember a few turns ago when Ross managed to ambush one of my barge-convoys with a few DD's? Thease seem to be the out-of-fuel remnants of those DD's. Soon out of fuel and out of commission.

I never thought I'd see this day! With great pride I can say that my floatplanes are far superior than those of my worthy opponent in a floatplane vs. floatplane encounter ;D

Floatplane wars, now that'd be an interesting scenario to build!

Now wait till Ross convinces his B-17's to go bomb those silly little floatplane carriers :)

I have a question about AVs. Do their float planes fly only if the AV is formed up in a TF at a base? Or do they fly even if the AV is anchored ("in port") at a base? I assume the latter -- right?
