When you set a primary mission for an airgroup, the patrol percentages down below represent your ability to reserve a portion of the airgroup's planes for other activities. Whatever percentage of the group that you have set to patrol activities will not conduct the primary mission. As an example, say you have a 20-plane unit. You set the primary mission to Naval Strike. Then, as in the example above, you set the Patrol settings for 50 Search and 20 Train. Of your 20 planes, 50% (10 planes) will be reserved for Naval Search and will not fly a Naval Strike mission. 20% (4 planes) will be reserved for training and will not fly a Naval Strike mission. The remaining 6 planes in the group will be available for Naval Strike, should a suitable target present itself. In any event, your Naval Strike will include no more than 6 planes. Note that the reserved planes are "forced" to conduct their patrol missions, and will not rest themselves. As Cohimbra noted above, if 70% of your planes are flying every turn (plus any strike missions), the planes and pilots will fatigue quickly, which can result in losses. My favorite patrol setting to use is "Rest," which will ensure that at least some of the group will be getting the needed R&R. I try not to fly more than 50% of my group in patrols any given turn, unless its some kind of emergency.
