Got this one - not bad, but not half as deep as you'd expect or hope

The Art of Wargaming - Peter Perla. Tough to read all of the way through but should probably be required reading for all wargame developers, especially the not so subtle instruction to avoid trying to do it all in one game.

Just to put a spanner in the works, I have got and read http://www.amazon.co.uk/Simulating-War-Studying-Conflict-Simulation/dp/1441185585/ref=pd_sim_b_10 and found it good. He created the game Lost Battles... http://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/83325/lost-battles which has quite a following also he is active on the Internet in the associated yahoo group as well.

Didn't H.G. Wells write the first definitive book on war gaming?

Otherwise, do you know any good book about operational strategy ?

I just got Achtung Panzer from Heinz Guderian, as a start.

About three years ago I read a book about the common British infantry man in ww1. It was mostly letters from home and in hardback. It was very good and want to own it. Any clues on the name? I can't remember it.

Operational? I'd prob go for something by Glantz, though it is very dry reading. I've yet to read a book that would really teach me operational warfare in a wargame. The best way to learn is read AAR's of said game. Books are great for immersion purposes with regards to wargames and can help to some degree maybe.

Rogo well that could be one of hundreds mate to be honest. Some great reads are below
War letters to a Wife by Rowland Fielding
For Love and Courage by E W Hermon (might be the book you mean)
Somewhere in France by L W Nott (Or this one)
War Diary Of The Master Of Belhaven 1914-1918 by Ralph G. A. Hamilton
