I'm asking the matrix community if there is a game that is right for me.

I prefer playing the games as a small fish in a big pond.
Whether infantry Squad, tank platoon, or Aircraft Squadran.

When I play Eagle Day, I controlled just one Squadran.
I enjoyed following the "careers" of the pilots in my squad while the war goes on around us.
There just wasn't much "man management" do be done. Other than experience there was no difference in pilots.
It was fun seeing pilots become aces, or get flamed but there just wasn't much immersion at that level.

Is there a game, whether airwar, ground, or sea that has "individuals" with unique skill sets that can grow or burnout that you can manage through the war?
I cared more for my pilots kill totals and deaths, then I did for the wars outcome (not very patriotic eh?)

With so many strategy sims, it's tough to identify if any have this "game within a game" capability.

Thanks

Jagged Alliance series, maybe? Only other ones I can think of that have that level of individual character interaction would be the generals and kings in the Total War games and of course Crusader Kings I/II.

Panzer Command Ostfront has some of those attributes. You can have a core force and generate a Campaign and follow your force through the campaign. (or just play one of the standard campaigns). The core units start out with standard attributes, but as you play they can gain experience, and they can also win medals which translate into enhanced skills.

Scourge of War is the one you want. Once you start playing multi player, you can control just a Brigade of troops in a battle of Gettysburg with either a AI commander above you or even another human commander. The larger battles, you are a small fish in a much larger ocean. Playing full historical with camera locked to what you can see, and you will know exactly how it feels to get lost in some deep woods at Chance and stumble upon the battle long after you should have arrived for support and get plastered by the enemy, or how it feels to think you side is winning the battle only to find out when the game ends that you were basically the last on your side to survive the battle as the enemy main thrust went left instead of right where you were.

Co-op battles are a blast against the AI even with a couple of friends, we do them all the time, some are brigade each with 1 either div commander of even the AI as commander. Depends on how much time we have and such. Basically nothing can match the total immersion the game offers. Whether camera locked or with it not locked so you can fly around and watch the battle unfold over 5 miles of ground.

P.S. skills do not grow beyond your skill levels, but I feel you would love the game as you can become very attached to your little sprite guys, and it can be very sad looking over the battlefield and thinking "dang, I won but look at the cost" from all the little dead sprites.

Individual scenerios also have scenerios where you're a brigade commander or division commander amongst a larger fight. You don't HAVE to play multi player.

Well that is true too, forgot about that. But as fun as the versus AI battles are, MP is the best. I am slowly working my way until I can get into the larger MP games, I want to be much better at using the courier system and such so not to ruin for the larger games.

Graviteam Tactics Op Star maybe? I also get immersed with Squad Battles Red Victory esp PBEM. However again they don't really fit what your after. As I said I'd love a game along similar lines..hopefully one day it will be made.

I'd cast my vote for Panzer Command: Ostfront also. Nothing like taking your core group and trying to keep them alive throughout an entire campaign while earning a few medals along the way.

Anyone remember the terrific AAR for WITP: AE where the AAR narrated the story of a single destroyer through the war? It was very popular while it ran. I think this kind of idea applies to more games than you might initially think if you have a creative mind.

Campaign series , pick your rank , start campaign, get promoted depending on your performance.

I can think of two games right off. X-Com Defender and Terror from the Deep and Scorge of War Gettysburg or Mad Minutes 2nd Manassas Bull Run game. Sid Meier has a new airplance game out you might like, Ace Patrol, sorta easy and like you are looking for. Steel Panthers World at War (free download) is along those lines to.

Thanks for the suggestions!

Falcon 3.0 was the first game I played this way.
It was the first game I played in which your AI buddies were more then just cannon fodder.

You could set up a mission and then lawn dart on takeoff and your wingmen would continue the mission, maybe even successfully, they would bomb targets, shoot down planes etc etc.
If I recall correctly they had 3 ratings. Air combat, ground attack, and flying skill. This ratings would improve as they survived missions. They also got fatigued so you had to man manage them and sometimes take lesser pilots to give your studs a rest.
The thing I thought was most clever, you could send them to wargames, and play with them in practice mode to improve their skill. If they got shot down, no biggie, as you don't really shot at each other in wargames, but if they pranged on landing or had a midair collision then they died in your campaign too.
I. LOVED. THAT. GAME!

Anyways, Nelmsm said it best. There is nothing like playing the game with the goal of keeping your buddies alive!

Hi,

Just wanted to mention that Close Combat 3 has that role-playing aspect too. You're in charge of one company part of a fire brigade that gets sent to the hot-spots of the Eastern front, from the invasion in '41 to the bitter end at the Reichstag in '45. You can upgrade your units as time goes by and see them progress in ranks, experience, gain medals, see their kills stack up and watch them survive and be heroes or cowards.

One aspect I really like is that they get a medal for each operation completed, so at the end in Berlin you get to see your veterans alongside the new recruits. For me almost always only get one or two guys that have been since the beginning, almost everyone starts their medals from the second/third operation onwards since the second operation is the drive to Moscow and the next is the counter-attack in the winter of '41.

But the thing I like the most, is choosing a conscript unit and see them be upgraded all the way up until they are an elite squad.

Oh and you get represented right there in the Battle with a pixeltruppe that bears your name

The japanese destroyer Hibiki or w/e it was called I think was what the story followed. By cuttlefish if I remember right. I wont lie that got me far more into WITP than I otherwise was, never would have bought AE if that thing hadn't been what I was reading at the time it came out.

Does Falcon 4.0 have something like that? I always ignored the AI pilots in Falcon 4.0.

No. I was quite disappointed in that.
I thought Falcon 4.0 was very good, but it lacked the "personal" touch of being a pilot in a squadran rather then just any one of a dozen pilots fighting a war.
