The axis did the right choice.

The end of turn roll was 9. It is good for Germany to have been able to move.
It has retreated many units to the "Adolf line", a long fortification running from Königsberg to Krackow, following the river course, protecting half of Poland. That fortifictaion line is still in building in the south, where protections are being built around Bratislava an Vienna.

If at all possible, the fortification should later extend into the mountains.

Thereis a similar line in the West, but the current invasion in the Netherlands makes it more or less useless. Still, time will show if it can serve any purpose.

In China, the attack on the 7th infantry does not meet with the expected success.

Note that instead of shattering the unit, I choose to keep it in China: shattering would send it back teleporting to Japan: this is not what I want. All units in China must end up destroyed.

In Rouen, the British try agin but fail again. Still, the city is vacated, but the cost was steep!

Northwest of Lyon, the offensive by Bradley succeeds. This success might open up the passage for the US troops, east of the Seine. Only one line of defense remains.

In Germany, the British expeditionary corps meets it first difficulty, although this is not exactly a defeat.

In Poland, the German retreat has put some units in jeopardy.
That was not unexpected. If the cost of the retreat stops at on unit, that will be counted as a victory!

As the turns at last ends, it is time for each country to count the casualties and lick its wounds.

The american losses are less than the production, and the lost units are minor. Still, they will go missing to fill up the garrison value for the fall of Italy. In no way do these losses impair the US ability to continue with the same strength.

Note that the US has used three offensive chits this turn, hence, counting all casualties, spent more than its production.

The Japanese loss is severe. The most problematic loss are the transports : this truns China into a large prison camp. The fleet is mostly unscathed, but the air born carriers have suffered. It remains to be seen how these losses can be replaced with a production that is going to be low.

The Russians are in a situation similar to the Americans. There losses will not impair in any way their ability to deal severe damage. The last impulse showed this very well.

The Chinese losses are in par with the usual losses. Nothing new here.

The German losses are appaling.

Their fighter force is severely depleted and will hardly be able to interfere with the allied air operations in the next turn, which promises to be very difficult.

Overall, the loss amounts to more that three full turn of their current production (counting 38) ; that production will be reduced because all oil must be kept aside: there is a need for 7 oil. Germany will barely meet the targe, by using all stored oil and all produced oil this turn.

Italy has also lost many units.

But it also has lost the control on the Yugoslavian and Greek resources, which means less production.
Like the German, the air force has greatly suffered and is unlikely to compete with the US air power, even though the carriers have suffered. But now, fighters with a rating of 9 are pointing their nose in the skies. That's bad news...

Note that the fleet losses amount to nothing: what now counts is keeping the garrison high enough to prevent the fall of Italy.

The Commonwealth has suffered from its two great defeats: Paris, Rouen. The land units will likely go missing in the next turn. It reamins to be seen wether they still have enough to make a serious difference.

Western Europe at the start of the July 44 1st axis impulse.

The axis is lucky: they get the initiative despite the allied reroll.

Hitler gave the order: there were enough troops to repel the British out of the German soil!

Indeed, using the advantage of initiative, Germany launches an attack on the British troops near the Netherlands. Idealy, they should be shattered, so that it would then be possible to mop up the remains of the expeditionary corps.

The British see the risks and also the gains of a successful resistance. They engage 3 bomber squadrons to help the troops on the gropund, protected by two of the best American long range fighter squadrons.

Germany engages the best planes available in range and inflicts severe damage.

It repels one of the three bomber squadrons, destroys another and destroys one of the Mustang cover.

It cannot prevent one squadron from get through.

The result of the fight doesn't meet the expectations of the Oberkommando.
The British are repelled, but not broken.

The ground support was instrumental in that result ; without it, the ground troops would have been shattered (+3 to the final result in this case.)

France at the start of the first allied impulse in July 44.

Germany had tough choices.

It could have tried to retreat, but it would not have reached the safety of the prepared fortification: allied units would then have been able to catch them on the run. That's not good.
Staying is not good either: some stack are weak (10 for one, 12 for the other), just because the best units are not available... It is hoped that not everything will crumble on the first assault: if some allied units are disorganized after an initial attack, it might be possible to retreat to safety as was done exceedingly well on the east front.

Another reason for not running is that a lot of planes would then be caught cold on the ground, while they can be used that impulse to defend, then flown back to better safety.

If there had been no British units in Netherlands, things would have been much simpler and the line would be much stronger!

Note that I forgot to attack the French partisan in Metz. I will play like I did. Actually, it doesn't really change anything I believe.

On the east front, the germans have managed a quasi perfect retreat behind their fortifications.
The fast retreat leaves most of the Russian planes quite far, actually much too far!
Furthermore, the Russians won't be able to attack the line on the first impulse, and possibly not the second if it has to bring its planes...

The one itch is in Hungary, where ther are few defenses. Most units there will be lost. Buy time is again the motto. If one can reach september, then all odds are on as to the weather.

The far east at the start of the 1st alliend impulse in July 44.

Most of what happens in China now is irrelevant. Units there can be considered as mostly lost.
The Japanese still managed to pull two units from Canton back to Japan.

They will still try to hold Shangaï. One shall see...

In France, the USA lauch an attack on one of the soft spot. The odds are not that good (they're not bad either) For the USA, the idea is to weaken the line, possibly pierce it. Even a defeat is no problem: units would get reorganized and thats all. Possibly a chit would then be needed to reorganize the HQ, but so what ?

Indeed, the attack succeeds quite well.

The British do their part of the work, by closing the pincer behind the German lines.

They did not attack in Germany fropm the Netherlads, first because they have disorganized units, second because they have no air cover, third because at this stage it is much more important to be a living threat that to make a (small) hole in the german defenses: Germany is forced to keep reasonable forces to prevent what happened on the previous turn.

It is important to note that this success (coupled with the US success) probably seals the doom of Germany: 6 corps, among them two Headquarters, are caught. Disentengling them will be quite difficult when one considers the number of allied corps waiting behind! And there is almost nothing to stop the advance of the corps that succeeded in the breakthrough.

Germany has the small satisfaction of seeing the Russians stopped in their track!
A lot of units will not be attacking!
This was mostly the result of a successful bomber... and exceedingly bad planning on the part of Russia which counted a lone surrounded unit as dead...

That success may let them rail some units from the east front, too well defende now, to the west front which is under manned.

Comment: I played with too much confidence here, not really checking how the attack was done. I was not even able to pull a blitz attack, when I realized it was too late!
