Have you checked the cruise speeds of your air groups from each AF?? If there is too much difference in this then you will get lots of fragments at the target.

That is an urban legend... Might have been that way once (?) but not any more.

You know I think there is probably a bug associated with ships being dead in the water and hit percentage. I've seen this result far too often as well. Now damaged ships which should be more mobile than ships dead in the water get hit at a much higher rate. I don't think being dead in the water is any reduction at all in hit percentage.

Can't say I've ever noticed that one.

Ships that are "dead in the water" tend to get hit very often in my experience.

Why are those ships dead in the water anyway? Damage? Out of fuel?

Feb 14, 1944

Four E's hit Osaka, the Irivings and Nicks don't do great, and despite the bad weather the Liberators pound the city and run thru the CAP. 11 Liberators lost for 3 Nicks and 7 Irvings. We also get 7 British Liberators over Singers later in the day.

We have two surface engagements during the night losing 2 MTBs and an inconclusive destroyer engagement with 2 of the IJN versus 4 of the USN. We score more hits 4 versus 2, but no other joy.

During the day the Deathstar moves to off Wenchow, out of range of air attacks where they splatter another convoy.

However there are plenty of targets for the Japanese planes to hit, but mostly we miss.

All my surface ships missed his ships which are low on fuel and ammo. Well, there is always tomorrow.

Here are some Kamikaze attacks on destroyers and destroyer escorts.

Interestingly enough both groups were pretty identical...over 50 LowN skills, but the Kates were slightly better trained have several near 60.

Only two squadrons flew down here, I guess it is the bad weather. Other Kamikaze squadrons didn't fly, too.

The most disappointing attacks of the day...

Here we have two elite squadrons, nobody under 70 skill, a lot in the high 70s and low 80s. Good experience. There was a torpedo hit that dudded on a CL.

Really disheartening.

8 waves of planes attacked this task force...

All the Betty and Francis attacks miss.

But over near Akita, a few Betties attack the destroyers there. We have a pilot willing to die for the Emperor, but I guess he misses -- he isn't in the pilot lists anymore. These pilots are too good to be doing that.

Unescorted ships and I can't sink them. Boy, am I poor at this game.

In Hokkaido, the last of my first blocking troops are pushed back with heavy losses on both sides. Of course heavier losses on my side, but still not disappointed with the results. Edit: Upon looking closer we still hold the blocking position with a whopping 170 points of AV.

No combat other than bombing and bombardments in Indochina.

I have managed to get two fresh divisions forward to the first blocking positions in the JR terrain (Moulmein/Bangkok road; Moulmeing/Rahaeng road). This will allow to bring back three worn out divisions for a little R&R.

Blocked the attempt to flank the southern Moulmein/Bangkok road.

My subs still aren't detected at Tavoy where they are patrolling, but I guess Lok is correct, they will never get a shot at a disbanded ship despite the port only being size 2.

Attacking with everything again today; maybe something will hit. Maybe the Kongos' will close, maybe the weather will clear. Hope springs eternal.

On Hokkaido a Tank Regiment of Japan's got wiped out last turn, so I bought it back. Perilously low on AFV pools, but hey, that is probably the least of my worries right now.

Its good news though if he's happy to let DDs run out of fuel though.

Suggests a very cavalier attitude at times which can only work in your favour

Of course he's got plenty of them but still!

He has always been very daring with his forces; unfortunately, I seem to have lost the ability to make him pay for it.

Another 1600, one base raid this turn. This time, I am trying to hit a major resupply, CVE, convoy that will most likely by at Kushiro. Lots of sweeps, lots of kamikazes. Plane losses will be staggering. Again.

I have now gone and shut off all repairs globally.

Plane production is I think a very generous 78 per day; with another 204 D4Y4 coming online March 1. That alone will give me over 500 navy divebombers per month; and it isn't going to be enough!

I will do a little math and see what the supply situation looks like for lasting out the year. With a no strategic bombing in China rule, there is a little safe haven of industry there. Plus my industry other than Honshu is still cranking away at 100 percent.

These 1600 plane raids are absolute killers...this upcoming raid will feature 1000 fighters and 600 bombers. Surely something good will come out of it? Not to mention all the other planes set to strike elsewhere. Plus the Kongo's and Cruisers and Destroyers...something has to jell here, but don't hold your breath.

This will probably be my last big strike; I will probably be forced to go back to heavily escorted single squadron bomber attacks and sweeps...so that I can rebuild the squadrons for the next big attack in two or so weeks.

Bought out the 3rd Tank Division; got my 3rd Sentai of Frank a's up and converted. Set up a cap trap in two places.

Forgot to change the transports carrying troops to Hokkaido. I have two divisions embarking from trains that I might be able to haul over in barges. His first 5 divisions are pretty worn out, I might be able to hold for a while if I can get them over there in the x3 terrain.

Three divisions safely evacuated from Truk; & one from Port Moresby. These four divisions are all headed back to Luzon and may or may not make Honshu.

I know I should simply give up Luzon, because I feel really strongly the Allies are going to invade Honshu and not mess around with other locations. However, I am still going to defend my perimeter. Fusan is bristling with free troops and artillery and tanks waiting to cross back to Honshu.

Lots of fort building on Honshu.

I haven't weakened Okinawa, only the dinkiest island of the Bonins did I move troops from; I am still fighting hard in Indochina. The SRA is very weak, but that is nothing new, it has been like that since Dec. Fuel and oil is still being shipped in great quantities to Hong Kong.

After this turn, I will probably turn back repairs on for Franks, especially in the offbeat locations. Fighter pools and production very healthy, bombers, especially Jills, Betty, and Frances getting worrisome. Nick D's I can't really keep up with the losses, despite making 4 a day. Irving Sa good pools, and an emergency reserve of Irving S to pull from too.

Playing Downfall can't prepare you for the beating I am taking here in Feb 44; so many of my troops, upgrades, squadrons are yet to come.

Still looking each days to pull off an paratroop landing; or surprise raid, flanking march...but prospects seem slim and or distant.

But it will come.

Just hang in there and he will make an error, and you will make him pay for it.

Very interesting, and I share your observation for aerial attacks, however, they are dead meat if one of my surface groups hits them. Missed by one hex this last turn, perhaps today....

It is a string message not to be totally relied upon as indicating completely stationery because there is no such thing as a ship being totally dead in the water in AE. The abstraction allows every TF to move at least 1 hex daily even if every ship in the TF has zero fuel and 99 engine damage.

Plus such a damaged ship may be billowing huge clouds of smoke which hides them from the bombers. Atmospheric conditions also play a part.

Then there is also the possibility that it has been turned into an Escort TF.

North of Honshu, an encounter goes Japan's way...however, a further encounter south and the Americans sneak away.

Izard was named after a Navy Officer that helped burn the Philadelphia in Tripoli while at anchor....the most daring naval action according to Nelson.

Well that is about all the joy there is for this day....

A CL/DD force shoots for a night engagement of the Deathstar, misses and then is hit hard at Pescadores. Only by a higher power are no ships sunk. The Heavy CAP at Shanghai proves worthless as the Deathstar goes west to Orchid Island, bombing ports and the CL/DD force and a hapless cargo ship (one this time).

Over in Ominato, the Allies sweep every base but Ominato, 1700 planes stand ready to strike the Allies and nobody flies. CVEs, BBs, and more are within easy reach, protected by less than 100 fighters. We drink sake instead.

The blocking division is shattered north of Hakodate, and his tanks pursue. Now he is one hex away from Hakodate.

Over Indochina, the 21st division arrives just in time to prevent a flanking attack west of Bangkok, that threatens the railroad line to Singers...2 British/Indian Brigades.

The only night bombing raid is on Hammatsu and is spoiled by KAI Dinahs and Petes and AA.

Indochina, I am really surprised at my ability to hold here, he is just pounding the troops mercilessly from the air, and if they are caught in the open it is rough, but the jungle rough terrain is our only boon here, and I am milking it for all it is worth.

So the lousy Americans have a 5 out of 13 DL on Ominato, and on the final screen before the end of the turn, there was no plane icon visible at Ominato.

Does this mean there is a chance he doesn't see 1700 planes?

Turn is away, I will risk one more day at Ominato...probably a mistake, sure to be either night bombed back into dust or something else really bad will happen...don't feel good about, so that means it might work out!

Egads, I am going looney. Of course the entire area is covered in thunderstorms so who know what might happen!

Expecting the worst, but prepared for something better.

I am glad I had no hopes for the days attacks...sweeps go into Kushiro and meet all his fighters on CAP, the juicy target of CV, BB, CVE at Sapporo with about 110 fighters goes unchallenged, unswept.

Allies perform no sweeps, instead every fighter is set on CAP.

In the afternoon, I get one attack by a handful of Zekes. Of course, several 4Es attack during the day, we drop close to 20, but one wave get thru.

The Deathstar continues running down the coast of China, hitting ports and the stray cargo ship.

Can't seem to do anything right. My CAP traps fail, my bombers sit idle, every decision is two steps behind the allies.

Indochina holds, Allies bomb heavily the blocking position on the left flank in the jungle...I guess he is upset that his troops aren't cutting the railroad anytime soon. At what point will another big paratroop operation be in play?
