No night bombing.

Allies sweep all around Nagoya and then bomb the manpower there, starting fires, but damage is that bad. Why is he diverting from the punishing engine/fighter targeted attacks that were killing me?

Allies lost Corsairs, Spits and Jugs. 10 of my fighter losses were either Zekes or Oscars.

Some Allied 4Es take the day off, from bombing the hex of death near Bangkok, and strike the port. No ships are home, and there are no Japanese fighters close. The Allies also bomb the runway at Singora, he is branching out his bombing attacks.

Recon in Malaya has picked up; perhaps he wants Singers.

The Great Thailand Withdraw: I am amazed I pulled this off without humongous losses.

I cannot take full credit for this -- since the Allies sent their Tank Army cross jungle into Rahaeng where they were held for a long time.

In the hex of doom is 4 Divisions, 8 Artillery, 8 AA, and some other odds and ends. They should make Bangkok before the 3500 AV north of them came make the hex. They will get bombed a little.

Yesterday Japanese AA units downed a whopping 11 planes. Best day in a long time!

This marks my first turn played fully in Ubuntu 12.04 LTS; hence the older graphics which I haven't updated yet.

Everything seems to have worked fine. I need to play with the switches a little to optimize the game some more (full screen for one) and update the graphics.

But so far I am pretty happy.

Now I need to figure out if I can get the support programs to work.

I have computers coming out of my ears. I took a win 7 system, a lenovo thinkpad I like, and converted half the drive to Ubuntu 12.04 LTS (long term stable - supported until 2017).

I did this a year or more ago.

So when I boot the computer, I can choose Ubuntu or Win 7 (dual boot). I like Ubuntu much better than Win 7, just not everything works on it, especially small business standouts like Quickbooks pre cloud versions.

Anyhow, I decided to get WITP AE to work on it, and Temagic did a lot of the ground work.
http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=3032836&mpage=1&key=linux

I picked up where he left off, with some updated versions of that software and got everything to work.

So the computer is dual machine, WITP AE runs fine(maybe better), & I can avoid Windows which is giving me grief on this computer anyhow.

The installation isn't hard, you basically add playonlinux, and from a menu on that program add a few plugins and viola, the game runs. Understanding where everything is saved took me a little time, but that was only because I was a dunderhead.

Below is my laptop screen at 60%...full screen mode.

Cranked thru my turn...the big retreat continues. I pulled a Naval HQ out of the Bonins with fast transport; working on pulling units of the Andamans.

Moved some CAP around.

Looking for a home for the KB...would like it to stay invisible, but I think with Sigint it can't.

Kates doing ASW work sunk a Yank sub off the Bonins, in two months they will have radar.

The pilots for the Lorna squadron are arriving. Set at range 5 (normal) the search arcs go out 3 hexes, more than enough to cover the seas at Formosa. German technology, built by Japan. It was to have been a theme in this game...

April 3, 1944

A little night bombing at Gifu. Irvings are on the job; the Nicks were based at Nagoya and tried to wander over but couldn't make it.

Today I am going to redistribute the aviation bases, building radar in depth. Some place have a huge amount of radar, others barely have any (Nagasaki, home to two big Jack and Frank factories).

So, Gifu gets bombed and the Allies are back to bombing Frank factories.

Over in the Kuriles, Etorofu is invaded by the 7th Aussie along with tanks, etc. The defenders do pretty well despite the bombardments. I had been gradually flying out troops, and quite frankly fairly happy that it will be taken since they were running low on supplies anyhow. They will have enough for the big fight.

Over in Sumatra, I moved the Tone and company to Sabang for some nefarious deeds, which gets swept by Jugs and Lightnings, catching the poor Tojo IIcs there very flatfooted, they were simply overwhelmed, and then a British carrier showed up of the Andamans and bombed the Tone and Company, only 2 Tojo were present for defense during the am, and none during the pm. Luckily, British pilots are very inexperienced and miss...perhaps I have blundered into an invasion?.

The poor Tojo squadron then gets plastered by bombers on the runway, however by then most had already been shot down.

The hex of death west of Bangkok gets creamed again by air, and then a deliberate attack by the Allies...losses are equal despite the huge disruption among the Japanese troops. My retreat here might break down on the very last leg, with the bridges of Bangkok in sight.

Air losses for the day...

At Etorofu, these big guns inflicted some losses, but didn't hit any ships. I didn't even see any animations that they fired on them.

I lost a little tanker yesterday. Other than a spate of horrible tanker losses in Jan of 1943, my tanker losses have been very light. I still have all the Tonan Whalers working still.

More boots on the ground...all needed. My armaments stockpile has dropped from 244K to 194K over the last few months. I have a lot of the armament factories turned off, and I am still growing my HI pool.

I keep worrying that my HI production will get destroyed, but so far it has taken a hit but I am able to produce enough to keep growing the stockpile of HI.

Of course AFVs are a disaster, but so what? Even with almost all vehicles turned off, newly arriving troops keep draining whatever my 206 factories produce keeping the pools effectively at 0. I will start making tanks again in June, if I am alive then for the nice new tanks.

I'd be surprised if it ran "better" in Ubuntu than Windows... So basically it's Ubuntu + playonlinux and you're good to go. Good to know for future, I guess. I might get a laptop and dualboot it in the next year or two.

I like Ubuntu also, I just wasn't able to get its email apps to play nice with Microsoft Exchange to have a viable substitute for Outlook, so don't run it on any computers right now.

I probably could do this in windows but never looked, but here I can take sequential screen shots and have them automatically saved to hard drive without ever leaving WITP AE.

Plus I used a px, py screen size command line instead of -f. Probably could do that in windows too.

The basic font is better, however alt_font always worked well on windows. Alt_font doesn't work well in ubuntu.

I have yet to get screwy graphics from switching into and out of the program.

The game doesn't seem to load as fast, but once loaded plays fine. No lag, etc.

Happy days, the turn is away, the J2M3 is rolling off the production lines...slower speed which is worrisome, but four cannons which is comforting.

I suspect my Japanese soldiers will take another beating from the air in the clear hex of death NW of Bangkok. Two of the small AA units there got wiped out last turn, although they took 18 planes with them due to flak (well some of those were at Gifu).

A large, almost unprotected convoy arrives at Babeldoab to pick up troops. I have a few DD strolling over (the famous Oshio), and unfortunately the convoy was detected. Some Lilly divebombers and Oscars may be able to damage any Yanks that come close, but the only ships spotted in the area are two SC.

Another large convoy of troops (support types) off Formosa heading for Shanghai...this TF does have decent ASW; another convoy loading up at Manila and the escorts are enroute from Hong Kong.

Most Yank subs off Pescadores and Shanghai now....lost an RO sub from damage one hex from Yokohama.

Waiting for the next B29 strike.

The "hex of Death" issue is very serious-- i just had two retreating Royal Thai divisions basically obliterated in the open in June 1944.

Curious how strong his LBA forces are for bombing the Home Islands. Are you seeing waves of hundreds of B-24's and B-29's? What kind of Experience and Air Skill do your fighters have etc? What fighter combos are working best for you? (I've gone full out with Ki-84 Franks for the Army and N1K1 George's for the Navy-- both seem to hold their own against bombers)

He hit Gifu with about 100 4E beasties last turn (50 in the biggest and first wave, many smaller waves after that)...by far the best bomber killer is the Ki100I. It is deadly with twin cl cannons and SR1 so that is lasts thru all the bomber waves. The Allies like to focus on a single target, wave after wave, and the Georges and Franks can run out of steam thru the bomber waves although the George is very, very good.

I have only seen the one B29 raid.

I am hoping the SR2 Jack, J2M3, with four cannons might give the Tony a run for the money.

I am now upgrading my Frank squadrons with 80+ experience pilots, but I have been able to maintain 60-70 air skill pretty well depending upon air frames. The lower skill pilots are further away and really just contend with Lightnings and Bombers, but for the most part the Allies don't go there. They like bombing at extended Jugs sweeps range.

Where Jugs can sweep, I need Frank, Tony and George. J2M2 has been disappointing against enemy fighters, kind of like the Tojo IIc. Where Jugs can't sweep, but Lightnings can, really any later planes work well even the A6M5c. Just numbers really, so you can stack your CAP and fly low. I am almost never over 12K.

I have been disappointed with Oscar IV, even with twin cl cannons, the planes often can't close in on the 4E beasties. But flying low, they provide a crucial layer to the CAP and provide a shield for the Franks and Georges.

I also have gone to concentrating my fighters, say at Tokyo, and from there they have protected everything out to one hex nicely. If I based fighters in both Maebashi and Tokyo, often times the fighters would not bleed over even though one base is not targeted. This is probably not a good tactic if the Allies decided to bomb multiple bases, but so far he hasn't done that. You also need lots of radar warning...

I have learned so much from playing thru this. It is incredible to me how much more I understand, and would do much differently.

Allies bombard and land more troops at Etorofu...the bombardments don't seem that effective versus level 5 forts, and we have some big Daddies there...28cm howitzers. They continue to have 0 disurption, 2 fatigue, and none disabled. What can they do to stop the Australians supported by tanks?

No night attacks. Subs are surging into the Straits, and there isn't much to stop them....

Over in the clear terrain, the Japanese troops and vehicles and guns are simply sitting ducks for the massed power of Allied bombers...wave after wave. The AA puts up a valiant fight, but they are just overwhelmed...will the Allies attack.

Silly question, of course.

The Commonwealth attacks....they outnumber the Japanese, are tired from their march thru the jungles, but they think the Japanese are in worse shape.

But from somewhere, deep down, each Japanese soldier does his duty despite the horrendous bombing, and they stall the attackers. For today. What will tomorrow bring?

Death.

The Allies sweep and bomb both Gifu and Osaka. The heavies go to Osaka. CAP is somewhat split, and we manage to drop the first B29 today in A2A, by a Zeke no less.

Several messages about the Zekes being unable to catch the fighters.

Radar warning was pitiful today...and Osaka burns.

Later, a large cooperative sweep of 76 Jugs flies over Osaka. Ugly.

I wonder how the air war would turn out if the Allies had a limited number of 75 plane fighter groups (FG) vs the 3 x 25 fighter squadrons (FS) they get now??

When playing the Allies I really hated the 75-plane fighter groups that could not be split (a later rendition of the WITP scenarios allowed them to be split) because of the airfield stacking limitations. It wound up preventing the Allies (USA at least) from even having fighters at some locations.
