Not really that bad of a strategy. His Marine divisions plus Allied armor at this point in time is almost unstoppable in clear terrain even if you have forts. He can then get a few divisions into some of your urban bases nearby and stop production without having to risk his aircraft. The island is then cut in half and bring all his bombers into play.

I think it's just similar to people no longer knowing certain information because they know they can just google it. But applied to maps.

Taken together with people who couldn't really read maps beforehand, so don't have a good mental picture of where they are and what directions to a place look like in real life... and you get a lot of people getting lost.

A former SAS soldier once said that reading a map wasn´t a skill but rather an art. Some people just can´t translate the information on a map to a real world environment.

Not everybody has spatial intelligence. I see it all the time. I'm one of those people whose mind works that way.

My father, for example, can't picture things in his head at all. It's just not how his brain is wired. The last (and I do mean last) time I had him help me build something from scratch, it was a makeshift wall/wardrobe to plug one of those walk-through dining room/living room doorways that are too big for actual doors. To turn the dining room into a bedroom. When I was making the plans for it, I had forgotten about the very bottom edge of the molding in the room, and so I had to adjust the sides (which I had already cut at a different location) upwards 1/2". So they would no longer be flush with the top of the unit. I needed him to help me by holding the plywood in place while I screwed it together... it went fine on the first side because I told him to just hold it at the 1/2" mark, so that 1/2" was protruding, but he didn't understand why we were doing it in the first place and I didn't want to take the whole unit inside the house to show him why, and then back out to the garage again.

So on the second side, he held it flush instead of 1/2" up, and I had one side that was warped because it was 86.5" of plywood crammed into 86" of lateral space.

" = shorthand for inches

Plywood usually doesn´t fit very well into places smaller then its size.

It just made my otherwise decently-constructed make-my-big-doorway-a-closet thing not sit correctly on the floor. It kind of twisted at a weird angle. I didn't live there for very long, at least, so there's that. The wardrobe, as I called it, is actually still put together in the storage house at my parents' place. I keep telling them they can take it apart for spare lumber anytime.

Buy them a fire pit for Christmas ...

Turn is away...striking back again this turn.

Five fleet carriers turn into the wind...boosted by a CS and a strange battleship carrier hybrid. Some of the squadrons are kamikazes...

Moving forces to defend Honshu.

Singers, having undergone 4 fights will probably fall today.

Desperate fighting in Thailand/Vietnam...Allied tanks versus Japanese tanks and artillery. I need another month to get the good Japanese tanks! But, as always, it is the air power that decimates my defensive positions. 4E beasts flying low are just incredible disruptors.

May 8th, 1944

Hiroshima is night bombed by B29s targeting the runways...planes are packed into the base, for a large planned strike with the dawn.

Nicks and Irvings harry the bombers. Flak units target them. But they still get thru...about 70 planes are wrecked on the ground. For one B29 shot down.

But, near Singers, the relentless Allied advance is guarded by 3 known battleships and at least 2 carriers plus their support ships. The KB has been at Miri refueling when the decision was made, a lightning run, turn into the wind and attempt to catch the Allied Navy by surprise.

The night run is successful, a night time meeting with the remnants of the Western Navy, and with dawn the scouting reports are in and the ships turn into the wind and launch.

The planes, a motley group of obsolete fighters and torpedo planes, but mostly good divebombers takes to the air. Some pilots have embraced the Divine Wind...enemy carriers and battleships are sighted, some close, too close.

Into the horizon the strike group flies, fragmenting some due to weather, while Rex's and Rufes, and old Zeroes, and more modern Zekes, and some Tonies from the Army circle what is left of the pride of the Japanese fleet.

Now the waiting begins...

The night reports are in of the naval skirmishing off Shikoku. A destroyer lost here, perhaps an American lost, the running fights expend a lot of ammunition but for little effect overall.

The MTBs get three shots on fleet carriers, but they all dodge. American fleet carriers are very good at dodging torpedoes...

It will be up to the planes to strike at the Allied armada again today...

Just tons of nail biting excitement here.

The retreat from Battambang and the Allied thrust are on two different road systems and the Allied tanks pull forward...

The Allied tank thrust is stymied in the jungles SW of Vinh where dug in artillery knock out 60 tanks, but Japanese lose 600. The bombing here is really fierce and AA only just now setting up.

Further north the defenders of the Rahaeng triangle are attempting to return to friendly lines in a slow cross jungle march.

The 1st Tank Division has made Pakse, and is even now relocating further north to threaten the Allied tanks, while the 2nd Tank is rushing south from Vientiane.

Drama, glory, deafeat...it is all here!

Commander Nakano, Flight Leader, looked out over the clear sky. About 200 planes comprised his strike force, but splinters had flown off south after several reported battleships.

But his group flew on, past besieged Singapore, a smoking, haze filled area of fire and death. Nakano was vectoring his strike on the enemy carriers. Two fleet carriers the patrol planes had reported, and the weather this morning was clear.

In the straits, there would be no place for the Allies to hide.

The strike force was in good shape, the fighters flying very close escort at 18K. Old Zeroes, and more modern Zekes but still they would be outclassed by every Allied fighter expected in the area. Jills, Kates, and Judies made up the striking force. Some planes had huge 800 kilogram ship killers on them, while others had the less powerful, but still potent 500 kilogram bomb.

Slowly, coming into view was the Allied fleet...1, no 2 carriers, at least one battleship, no it was the Renown a battle cruiser come back to haunt us from the early days of the war...signal attack; red attack for carriers! The eyes of the Emperor are upon us. Banzai!

Nakano, his job as flight leader done, turned his squadron of Jills to make an approach on the largest carrier following attack plan red, when a Zero on Nakano's port side suddenly erupted into a greasy black fireball, tracers arcing down thru and past the fireball.

Slashing in from the higher altitudes, out of the sun came the Allied protection. Fighters in large numbers and great diversity of planes: Lightnings, those twin tailed devils, Seafires, Warhawks, Wildcats, Mustangs, Corsairs, Hellcats and Spitfires.

Oh my.

On the KB, some 120 miles to the east, flight operations listened to the radio of the terse commands being given out by the pilots of the strike force...when radar warned of advancing planes.

The Allies had launched a strike.

Captain Okada, task force commander, put his fleet into a defensive position, well aware this his fighter protection was very weak...

Rexes, Rufes, two Army planes and some early Zekes and even older Zeroes.

Oh my.

The splinter strike, south of Singers finds our old friend the Valiant.

Long time readers will recognize her...from 1942 and Cocos Island where Betties put three torpedoes into her. At the time we thought she was sunk and made no efforts to track her down and confirm the reported sinking.

Lost opportunities...

Commander Nakano's Jill was thru, on approach, just above the water drawing nearer the largest enemy flattop.

The flak was murderous, but then so was the Allied fighters. The Japanese fighters sacrificed themselves so the bombers could get thru...

Dodging flak, bouncing from near misses the the Jill approached the carrier, now identified as the British light carrier Unicorn. She was smoking from a bomb hit, and soon she would be on the bottom her back broken by numerous torpedo hits.

Banzai!

There is even more action, as a well coordinated strike flies from Hiroshima, despite the love they got from B29s the night before...

During the morning, the float fighters boost the CAP over the KB and only a few planes make actual bombing runs against the KB and they all miss except for one dud...scary moment there!

In the afternoon, bad weather rolls in playing total havoc with any potential strikes and grounding the float fighters.

Luckily the Zeroes and Zekes are up to the small strikes the Allies throw at the KB.

The five fleet carriers comprising the KB survive, for now.

Not enough.

Anyhow, he doesn't really need them anymore...I am pretty much pissing into the wind. Can't get a Koniu level strike here...

A closer look at the Unicorn. Nice name for a ship, btw.

If it were me, I wouldn't put this ship in harms way. Very slow, no armor and worth a lot of victory points.

But, since I am losing this game, don't listen to me you AFBs.
