August 10th, 1943

August of 43 1/3rd of the way finished...a naval engagement at night where IJN propaganda claim the sinking of many American warships...

Round 2, after a quiet night of no aerial bombardment despite the 71 percent moonlight.

Go Yubari!

The weather prevented bombers from flying / locating. I hate it when that happens

Lily vs Fletchers doesn't seem like you would have hit much. Olorin had KB catch some Clevelands and Fletchers off Sorong (sub attacks ate up op points and left them exposed) in mid '44 and without fighters I still did not have any sunk.

Fletchers to the right, Fletchers to the left. Argh! I despise Fletchers.

I actually heard sinking sounds late in the day, and since there has been no other action I think one of the Fletchers from yesterday or toady went down to a combination of high speed runs and damaging hits. That would be nice.

Fletchers hard to sink...that has to be one of the mantras as you transition towards late war.

I think I detect somebody being jealous that he doesn't have his own Fletchers. Japan has no DDs or CLs that can stand up to them. In mid-44 the Allen Sumner Class DDs come out allowing the Allied player to put them in their CV TF and use Fletchers just in SC TF. Wait until he gets enough to have 8 to 12 Fletchers in a TF or two or three or.....

You are quite correct. In my downfall game with mind-messing, I am using Fletcher tasks forces everywhere...nothing stops them, takes at least 3 twin engine kamikaze hits to really hurt one, mines they seem to shrug off and not hit that much anyhow, and they pack a punch against enemy shipping -- I am in love with them, except when they are against me!

Depends on the mine. Type 88 can ruin anything's day. Type 4 mines are absolutely pathetic, really only worthwhile against subs and even then 1 hit from a Type 4 is just going to send it to the barn, not put it in danger of sinking. Type 93 are middling. Might sink a sub, and will send a DD packing. Type 88 is laid only by subs.

In general, Japan seems to use the type 88's offensively, i.e. mining Allied ports rather than defensively at their own bases.

But you are quite correct!

Big deliberate attack at Chengtu tomorrow....the Japanese bombers have been inflicting 400 casualties a day for quite a while now, plus bombardments. I hope to get at least a 1-1!

So it will be an exciting day!

Some Allied night bombers show up at Rabaul.

supplies get to Ponape with no losses; more mines at Ponape and Guam. Reinforcements to Haiphong slated to build the Vinh line.

Attack at Chengtu nets only a 1-2, but does knock the forts down another level. Will attack again in a week. Supply malus for the defenders for the first time.

Getting close to a regular schedule and have more time to give to the AAR.

I have a fair number of Nicks working in China...and here is some unpleasantness from yesterday. I guess I could try to bomb Kunming's airfield, but I suspect I would fly into a nasty cap trap if I tried today.

Indochina

Feel pretty good here for now. Have to watch out for an invasion at Tavoy or south as always.

You think the enemy might bypass Tavoy and go for Sabang?

It is there for the taking pretty much. I wouldn't be surprised at a Java/Sumatra strike/invasion. Allied carriers are missing for two weeks it seems. Most of the Japanese surface fleet is at Singers to Phuket while his strength is in the Marshalls.

I have a fair amount of search of Perth, southern Ceylon watching....sending some surface ships to Perth area including a CS with a contingent of Norms.

Pesky small night time bomb raids on Rabaul. Nicks on duty get shot down, got to get some Alfs there.

A nice day overall in the air with 4 Japanese losses to a dozen Allied including some 4es. Normal Allied bombing in Marshalls and Indochina.

The Allies bring up a tank brigade and try deliberate attack down the road from Lashio only to be stopped cold by dug in troops.

In China another Corp is routed and forced to retreat with heavy losses, this time north of the Changsha triangle.

Night bombing at Rabaul, more Nicks die in a2a. The Endo detachment will arrive shortly.

The KB is sorties; dangerous looking intentions by the Allies in the CentPac....time to show the flag a little.

Allies bomb at night Rabaul...no Nicks lost I set them to 36K altitude and they couldn't close. No damage.

A squadron of Lightnings approach Bangkok, and are bloodied!

KB undetected, will be in strike position tomorrow morning. Joined by land based strikes...and then the KB will be gone the following day....

EDIT: Gone, in as vanished! Not gone, gone. I hope.

No night bombing.

Bait dangled; KB in strike position undetected; raiders nearing Perth; 2nd strike Group for Perth arriving SRA; Sub strike at Ramree getting positioned.

We will see if Allies detect anything this turn or I manage to get a good CV strike in!

Another deliberate attack at Chengtu.

No night bombing.

1-1 at Chengtu, knocks Chinese forts to 2. Not long now!

Perth raid going in. 4Es bomb Umboi for the first time...he must have intel that the Wake CD unit is there. Might move them now...not sure.

Supply ship arrives at Kusaie...

KB undetected, will move forward and then flee...other bait is dangling.

Perth raid is scheduled for tonight...ships in port, docked, hopefully it will be quite the surprise. Ramree raid tomorrow.
