Akagi had a portside Island as well.

Thanks for the clarification Miller!

As for my comment about the relative size of the crewmen, I now see there are some crewmen wayyyyy in the back behind the planes which show the true length of the ship. I forgot that she had a humpback deck that makes it seem foreshortened in the shot.

Jan 20 - 23, 1943

SUBS: Snapper runs into a big amphib TF near Carnarvon but misses.

INDIA: The Marine paras take Cuttack, adding another theat vector to the Indian situation. I'll pop some engineers in by rail and some big AA guns. This is pretty close to Calcutta, so could be useful once built from its current level 1 field.

CENT PAC: The decimated troops at Nauru try to recover now as the navy gives some help. I've got several surface groups that will alternate bombardments until he moves something in to stop them, which might be soon. How much supply can be here anyway? It'll be nice when Ocean gets a field so I can LR CAP and make sure not too much is getting in (or out) through the air. Still, if he wants to fight out here, it's good for us in the long run.

SO PAC: Trying something new here with an invasion. Not sure it'll work out, but I'll find out in about a week.

CHINA: Some decent and some terrible in China. The tanks have broken through, shugging off the previous day's 1:2 result as if it didn't happen and getting a 5:1 for the needed breakthrough into the central plains. Troops will retreat to Chungking mostly, as Chengtu will have only a skeleton force to waste some time. Not that it's not a worthy place to defend, but I didn't choose to increase forts there earlier, so it's now pretty vulnerable with level 1 and growing to level 2. It doesn't really matter against the tank armies, but at Chungking at least I could put up some resistance. I'll also try to run a few troops to the river crossing toward the Sian and Lanchow area to make that tough.

Near Chikhiang the IJA doesn't do as well. Two infantry divisions and one tank division actually suffer worse losses in a 1:1 attack, then shock and get a 1:2 and will have to be switched out for fresh troops. The Changsha pocket holds for now, and because there is some supply generation, might for a while longer. There have still been no further attempts for Sian, Wenchow or Lanchow.

OZ: All movements are on hold as I wait to decide on the possible amphibious op toward Esperance.

SIGINT: Looks like this is pretty good intelligence that lotsa guns and another division moving to SW OZ.

This is quite a build-up, and apparently a change of plan. He had moved things out, now there're coming back in, seemingly as much or more than had left originally.

Madras is still holding strong, and he has a big commitment of fighters there to protect it. I'll move on it with some very large armies and those will far outnumber his two divisions and a garrison unit, even with decent forts here. If he decides to fight, retreat, or reinforce, I will still go for this base.

SUBS: The RO-65 hits and maims the Pike near Nauru, but the Pike makes it to Ocean and will rest there for a bit. The I-19 misses a big TK convoy near Pukapuka.

INDIA: A begining is made on Ceylon by hitting the unused level 7 fields at Dambulla. In spite of severe storms the fields take around 50-60 damage judging by recon reports. We take 4 losses to flak and a few more to ops, but there is no bleeding CAP here. I stood down on the 27th, but I'll sweep with Corsairs and P-38s tomorrow.

CENT PAC: Bombardments keep hitting Nauru. Ocean is at 70% for level 1 field construction. in the meantime lots of units prep is getting finishing for Cent Pac and I have to decide if it's even worth it to continue out here.

SO PAC: I'm moving to Rekata Bay with only fast transports and landing craft. This is a new test, possibly at the expense of the 2nd Marine regiment.

CHINA: Near Chikhiang the Japanese take more big disablements. The Chinese here are stalling well, but it won't matter unless I can get India back to send some supply. Tanks roll into Chengtu and begin the destruction.

OZ: It'll unfortunately be another 10 days before I can consider loading up for a move to Esperance. Upgrades are happening at Sydney, but if these ships are going into the firing line with 200+ LBA bombers bearing down, I want the best radar and flak upgrades installed.

SIGINT: Some more good news about units coming to OZ, and one more piece of gold!!

3/17th Garrison Unit is loaded on AK Asakasan Maru moving to Darwin.
13/19th Division is loaded on xAK Bordeaux Maru at Darwin (76,124).
2/19th Division is loaded on xAK Nittai Maru at Darwin (76,124).
7/19th Division is loaded on xAK Yoneyama Maru at Darwin (76,124).

I expect KB is replenishing from an AKE or two at Sabang. Do you have any way of trying to take them out?
Night attack with B-24s?

Nothing will reach Sabang from any location in Allied possession right now. I'm pretty sure these are just sitting and waiting for me to move toward Diego or Colombo. Seeing SIGINT days apart on two of the CV/CVL that likely form the main KB would lead me to believe this is their long term station. I like the placement, as I could get quite far into the interior of the Empire if I were really bold, but right now it just lets me think of what I'll do in OZ with some leeway to not have to worry about the KB coming.

I inadvertently left half the fleet ready to upgrade in Sydney and now I'll have to wait another 20 days to really go forward. It's probably better though, as this will mean better AA/radar, plus in some ways it's better to keep letting the Japanese pile more back into SW OZ. If I choose to invade I'd like to catch some stuff there. Might not be able to still though, landing at Esperance. I also don't have a huge amount of invasion shipping available. I've only lost 1-2 AP/AK, but they only really start coming fast now. Currently on this side of the board I have enough to move about 2 supported divisions.

It all just lets me know why it was mid-43 before the Alies really started picking up their pace moving forward. I'm in no hurry, yet.

SUBS: Lost a sub to a sub. The I-7 takes out S-37 near Cochin. Lots of ships at Calcutta, maybe taking troops out, and Spearfish

INDIA: Another small strike hits Dambulla with no CAP up again. He's moved more fighters to Colombo and Trincomalee to meet what is most likely perceived as an imminent threat. I'm not really close to moving on Ceylon, but I will feel out the CAP there soon in the hope of making the ports less tenable.

Hit an Army HQ out of base on the 30th and then left a few of the bombers on which re-directed to Patna somehow and hit massive CAP there. We hit very few troops so the unit most likely didn't evaporate, and I don't think it moved to Patna, so this is a little strange. Lost about 35 planes for nothing.

CENT PAC: Sending some LSTs out to make an attempt to land some tanks at Nauru, but I'll have to get some good combat ships in there as these things are vulnerable to the CD guns. Might be better off with the 12 knot AKs that I get a billion of. Not looking forward to a shock for this, but it must be done sometime.

SO PAC: A boat and shore party lands at Rekata Bay by fast transport. Somehow there are still 3 forts here, which is nice to step into. Marines will follow, slowly.

CHINA: The Japanese try a DA up in the mountains in a 20k SL hex with only one division. It'll be tough for them to break through here, as losses were light and almost equal, and he's got less in the hex already.

OZ: Although lots of troops seem to be moving to SW OZ they're a bit hard to find. I'll keep sending the LR USN Liberators to have looks around.

SIGINT: He's buying out a lot of divisions. This one was in Kiamuze until recently.

8/19th Division is loaded on xAK Toyokawa Maru at Sansapor (83,107).

I'll keep trying to put some damage on this field so that when I then do strike at the more critical fields, this won't be so useful.

wrt Nauru & CentPac,

obvs, your 2nd DA attack was a mistake, didn't you see the forts-level 3 from your 1st attack? Your amph-assault lacked Combat Engineers! Should be a lesson to you, for future planning - Rgts don't have the oomph, they need to go in w/ Art / Arm / ComEgr support.

Shuttling naval bombardment TFs to attack Nauru is a good idea, 'cos it'll be some while before your 2 Rgts will be capable of another attack. Don't neglect bringing lots of supply to your guys on Nauru.

Don't abandon future ops in CentPac, keep the pressure on. Use your amph shipping to do sone rope-a-dope, alternating between invasions in the Solomons & CentPac.

I did see the level 3 forts. I didn't see the 3rd naval guard/SNLF unit added after. That was my biggest mistake there. I didn't take the time to bombard first.

The Marines (1/3 of a division) do have some combat engineers. I thought they had the firepower to deal with the two slightly roughed up small guard units and a base force that had been under constant pressure for weeks. I was wrong. I think also the very many other odd units there added a bit to the AV as well. I also did not wait until the fatigue, disblements and disruption of my own troops were completely at zero. That was a factor as can be seen in the CR for the DA at Nauru.

If you imagine the second attack being 230AV against ~150AV as in the first shock (or less since they were still recovering), I'd think the quality of the Marines would maybe knock a fort off and at least get close to an even attack.

I'll keep the pressure up for sure.

Feb 1 - 2, 1943

SUBS: Thresher finds another big TF moving down the Aussie coast. Can't hit anything though.

INDIA: I'll have about 200k troops in Madras within 4-5 days. He's done nothing to either reinforce or move troops out. Maybe the forts here are killer, but I'm gong for it anyway.

CENT PAC: Some LSTs have arrived at Christmas Island and will move in to the Gilberts to use at Nauru and potentially Mili.

SO PAC: The experimental landing craft invasion of Rekata is so far going well. Looks like the troops there don't have any guns as there is no auto-bombardment on landing. That's nice, since I have very little there at this point!

CHINA: The IJA takes Chengtu. Chungking prepares for the worst. About 3400AV of the Chinese army is there, and the open road to the South still allows possible reinforcements if it is put under siege, which would be unusual I think. I'll be looking though the units nearby in the next few turns to see which look the strongest to get into and near the city to maximize the SL and experience there.

Units are forming a block on the road to Sian/Lanchow that should be about 800AV dug in by the time the IJA arrives. I might be able to get another unit there, but it is x3 territory across a river, so a tough place to go without some preparation. It'll be interesting to see what he decides to do the rest of the way here.

The stack near Chikhiang looks about to fold. I decided not to move anything more in here as the units in the next hex, threatened with being cut off completely from Changsha, are probably better off keeping their forts and defending in place.

SIGINT: Another new unit showing up at Perth.

2nd Tank Regiment is located at Perth(49,147).

The sad state of China now. I did make some critical mistakes that led to this happening a few months before it had to. It's all about timing, and those few months could be critical. Chungking will still be a tough nut since it can't currently be surrounded and the AA there is so far taking a toll on bombers coming in while protecting the supply somewhat.

At least the respite you got after GJs disastrous Sian crossing and India en devour bought you some time. Hanging on to China into -43 is rare indeed. Pretty sad to see that despite you being able to recover disablements, dig in, get organized and even save some supply things crumbled once pressure was applied.

A bit of caution about Chungking with SLs. You might want to consider giving it up as it could potentially turn into a Japanese VP generator. He kills units off, units respawn...rinse and repeat. Not sure how many VPs Tom got from his bombardments but I lost a couple of hundred casualties each turn.

Sorry for the short note! Writing on the phone.

Good luck at Madras...

Curious your thoughts on what you would have done differently in China?

He definitely could have gotten the air force in earlier, but then it would have been slower elsewhere I'm sure.

Instead of abandoning positions when it looked untenable I've generally stayed put until the last minute and only tried to move back one he started to get even or positive attacks. So far this seems to be the one piece of my plans here that has worked consistently, and frustrated him a bit judging by the emails I get periodically!

In Chungking he can either take the time to work up the road from Kweiyang through three dug-in hexes, or he can go for Chungking right away and let me rotate units in and out. If he does the former it will take another few months at the least to get up the road. If he does the later he'll have 'fresh' units (or as fresh as the Chinese can field right now) moving in and out. At 12:1 in devices:VP even losing 12 squads a day to a bombardment is like losing a PBY on patrol.

So in short, I feel like holding again is the choice he'd like least. Even losing the entire army in Chungking wouldn't be such a VP hit considering the losses the Japanese take as well, and it could mean the lengthy siege necessary would allow the Sian/Lanchow area to stay in Chinese control for the remainder.

Early on the Sian defense helped slow Japanese advances, but he recovered quickly and pushed hard through the middle at Pingsiang, especially once the tank divisions had been formed in Spring 42. There I made the most of good territory and managed to maneuver until the end, getting the most out of the line from Changsha to Kukong. At Pingsiang I lost a few hundred squads I didn't have to by trying to retreat West instead of South, but that was a minor mistake.

Later as the center shifted back, the block in front of Chikhiang stymied Japanese progress for a slid three months. Whle that happened though I made some mistakes in the South, not preparing for best play and the introduction of new units to open another front. I had dug in on several key hexes near Nanning/Liuchow, but not enough and not all of them. All three should have had 1000AV to hold while reserves moved forward. The IJA punched through on the 55k hex and everything had to move back.

In the mountains I thought the territory was so good and the SL so small he couldn't really move an entire Army up the track there. I should have maxed and dug on the two 25k and 20k hexes to either side of the river crossing though, and that was my mistake here. He might have taken another 3-4 months to break through there if I'd installed units and built a few forts.

Finally, after Chikhiang collapsed following another two months of siege, I should have installed a few good Corps that I had coming from reserves into the x3 hex to the north of Kweiyang, This hex was given away, and it could have held another 1-2 months with the off-road supply situation and the good ground there.

All in all, I think he should be in the position he's in now in April-May 43 had I played each of those moves correctly. So I've given him 3-4 months for free in China while he's given me 3-4 months free in So Pac and Cent Pac. Maybe it evens out!

At least you hold the Changteh-Changhsa Festung Area with its auto-supply generation.

Yeah, he can go for the VPs from those units, but most of them still have supply, and Changsha still has four forts as well. Wenchow hasn't been tried yet either. I'd love to keep that and land a few Marines divisions there in late 43!!

Doesn't Wenchow also produce supply for its garrison?

In Chungking he can either take the time to work up the road from Kweiyang through three dug-in hexes, or he can go for Chungking right away and let me rotate units in and out. If he does the former it will take another few months at the least to get up the road. If he does the later he'll have 'fresh' units (or as fresh as the Chinese can field right now) moving in and out. At 12:1 in devices:VP even losing 12 squads a day to a bombardment is like losing a PBY on patrol.

It's 12 to 6 on the ratio, so 2:1.

Yes, in spite of what he does, it keeps holding at around 4k and has been for more than a year. I've got two Corps there equalling about 830AV.

Yep. I was just equating it to other stuff above. He still won't lose as many points as the Chinese even at 6:1, but it'll potentially hurt at Chungking if an attack goes south and it's 400-500 squads lost.

wrt Nauru & CentPac,

obvs, your 2nd DA attack was a mistake, didn't you see the forts-level 3 from your 1st attack?

He outnumbers you in guns. At least in quantity (not sure about quality). This in itself could shift the odds table in his favor. It is not always about AV. But you know that already.

The Naval Guards and SNLF have hardly any arty and the AA units and base force probably account for most of the guns.

There are two big and one small caliber AA units there. Now if the AA units are firing out at ground troops, yes I'm definitely going to suffer here. Are they? Good question. I know they have an anti-soft and anti hard rating, so maybe they are firing in defense only. The big base force also has DP guns and AA guns as well a a small amount of anti-ground arty.

So. The point is that this may take a while, but unless he's willing to invest more, or counter-invade, it seems like it'll eventually fall. I've got tanks fully prepped as I mentioned, some combat engineers partially prepped and some Marine arty partially prepped.

I think AA units do get some kind of anti-personnel rating in combat determination - in defence only as you said. I have had troop losses attacking isolated AA units, but not as many as when attacking isolated artillery units with infantry.

Add a few cruisers to that reinforcing phib TF, they'll suppress the guns that would otherwise mung your LSTs. Another think is, to bring the AmphTF to Nauru (or 1 hex away), w/ 'Remain on station / Do not unload' orders. Next orders phase, switch them to full-speed & unload. The idea is, they'll unload during that day's 4 phib-unload seqments, & will have all their combat-power available for the gtound-combat phase.
To be sure, you'll need to keep the phibTF covered by carrier air & surfTFs, during the time it takes to arrive & unload. NTM that you'll want any existing troopers to attack in concert w/ the new arrivals. Mebbe they aren't ready to do that? If so, hold back on the reinf troops, just bring supply, & use your cruisers to bombard the defenders.

My first landing went well. I'd sent in 3 separate bombardments and had BBs in the amphib TFs. Now the Marines are back to where they should be but the US independent regiment is at 50% strength and only 16AV, although all squads are ready and the morale is good. So I think I could get away with it as long as combat engineers and arty are fully prepped (another month away) and the tanks get completely off the transports in one day (LSTs will be used).

The units have good supply for now and two of the three have level 2 forts, which will help. He has to run out of supply soon, but my be introducing some by air which I'll discover soon when I can LR CAP from Ocean.

In the meantime I have 60AV paras prepped for Majuro with some other stuff that will be fast transport delivered. I might pull an unexpected trigger on that, plus have a bunch of stuff waiting for Mili, and BBs almost finished upgrading at PH that will take part since there are serious CD guns there. Jaluit is also a target, with prep ready, and it would be fun to hit all three simultaneously, but that might be too far a bridge.

Feb 3 - 5, 1943

SUBS: Lots of contacts, but no hits. I can't seem to get to the plethora of ships traversing the Gulf of India.

INDIA: The IJN bombards Trivinandum with a CL and DDs and gets a surprisingly good result. About 5 planes are lost on the ground and the fields are shut for now. I'll need more mines, subs, and forts here. The PTs were brushed aside easily. Four of those are lost as well.

CENT PAC: Still rotating bombardments at Nauru.

SO PAC: The last of the landing craft invasion goes over the beaches in Rakata Bay. He's got what looks to be a token force here.

At Woodlark I lost two xAKL I'd sent on a volunteer mission to supply that base, intercepted by two DDs which couldn't take out PC Haida and it's 5inch guns. That nice little ship will try to limp back to Brisbane now with 45/23/3 damage.

CHINA: At last the stack over the river from Chikhiang gets pushed back and gutted. These troops will be useless now, but they've stalled nicely. Up in the mountains the IJA attacks and the 1:4 battle gives roughly even losses to both sides again.

OZ: All of the Aussie troops in the desert have started moving toward Kalgoorlie again as one big mob. It'll take another 40-50 days to get there, but it's starting to seem that all of the activity I noticed in SIGINT was taking troops out, not bringing them back in. Kalgoorlie is lightly held, Perth only shows 9k troops, and Esperance is nearly empty with one unit present.

SIGINT: I have a feeling this unit is leaving Trincomalee, probably for Madras, where there is a lot of shipping. So these messages make me think he's using a system of basing a departing troop carrying TF at the departure base, then setting them to patrol at the destination, so as never to give the SIGINT a definitive correct destination base. Tricksy!

I've done this myself, and always wondered whether it works. I think now that it does, although I still now know a unit is moving from somewhere, so I can then try to track it. I just have to be very careful to check SIGINT right away during a turn instead of after from now on.

The divisions shown here in OZ I have no idea anymore, but I do have lots of subs on the way to find out!

18/38th Division is loaded on a Japanese xAK moving to Trincomalee

35/56th Division is loaded on a Japanese xAK moving to Port Hedland.
28/Imperial Guards Division is loaded on xAK Hauraki Maru moving to Port Hedland.
43/Imperial Guards Division is loaded on a Japanese CM moving to Port Hedland.
41/56th Division is loaded on a Japanese AP moving to Port Hedland.
30/56th Division is loaded on a Toho Cargo class xAK moving to Port Hedland.

INDIA: Getting all of the 200k troops into Madras now. I'l wait for a fort to be built on every unit before doing anything.

SO PAC: A bombardment at Rekata Bay shows the two units there have almost no troops. A DA is scheduled for tomorrow, and on top of that Munda was just conquered by the row boat corps! Nice! A Marine Pioneer battalion will be flown in before some engineers can be sent. Now I can change the prep for the units slated for that base. Most around here seems very lightly held up to Buin and Torokina, which have 5-10k troops in them.

CHINA: Nick is pounding away in the mountains, getting only negative attacks, but each one takes a bit out of our troops that won't come back. His are most likely wearing down too, but they have a chance to recover. Chengteh will be under siege within days. i've moved three big Corps in to try to give a bloody nose or at least slow it all down there.

When supply is an abstract that can stand for fuel, food, ammo and spare parts it's a lot easier I think!

SUBS: An S boat gets in to Torokina and finds the Musashi TF but can't get through the screen to the big juicy targets.

CENT PAC: The IJN CVs showed up briefly on the horizon, still sailing around using fuel, but didn't come rushing. I suspended bombardments for a few days.

SO PAC: I went for the IJN stationed at Buin/Torokina and although the Cactus air force suffers some losses they manage to get through for three 1,000 pounder hits, One on Nachi, one on Myoko starting a fire. The one on Musashi probably messed up the wood planking a bit. Still. Always good to get a hit on a Japanese ship! Bette to start a fire!

The sweeps mostly came after the strikes, and several of the bombing groups didn't fly, including the majority of the TB, so all in all this is a positive result given the conditions. We lost about 80:25 airframes on the day, but also got good intel on his force compositions and a few hits that could need work at some point for those CA.

Rekata Bay fell easily to our troops. Pangoe and a few others are coming into the sights and might also be easy grabs based on what is there now.

CHINA: The tank army takes Kienko. This trashes further the already trashed Corps around there and turns one unit into zombies. Still, I did manage to get 750AV beginning to dig on the other side of the river, and more is on the way. He'll have to take a risk crossing here if he does want to go the back way into the mountains and toward Sian/Lanchow. I do see some movement near Sian, units moving away. Maybe he's given up on that particular axis?

Near the Kunming mountains the IJA continues to DA with negative results but slowly wearing down the Chinese troops. One of the Corps has 4 forts, so will be hard to move even after getting to positive there.

SIGINT: Are these units just going back and forth across western OZ, or does he keep one fragment loaded and just change the direction periodically?

In India it looks like maybe Madras is getting pumped up! All the more to destroy! (I hope)

29/Imperial Guards Division is loaded on xAK Mikasa Maru moving to Perth.

6/5th Guards Division is loaded on a Buenos Aires Maru class xAP moving to Madras.

Nice to get these big boys in the sights even though there were far too many splashes.
