I can tell you from flying my bombers at 2000 feet that the threshold for non-ABs having reduced bombload is the "low naval" or "low ground" threshold, which is 1000.

100 = strafing. May also use LowG skill, have seen no evidence of it using LowN but someone would have to test.

1000 = low naval/low ground. Reduced bombload except for attack bombers.

2000+ = regular ground, regular naval. Regular bomb load.

That corresponds with my experience with training. You can'tg get gains in LowNav or LowGrnd unless set at 1000 feet.

I've had gains in "on the job" training for Low Ground with fighters set to Ground Attack at 100 feet - they strafe, but they also drop bombs, and this apparently improves their LowG skill and not always their Strafe skill. I have noticed no such increase in Low Nav when attacking shipping, but the opportunities to do so are so far in between that it's hard to test during an actual game.

For the Japanese it makes sense to have a lot of different pilots trained for Low Naval anyway since it's what kami pilots will use eventually.

I just used some Nicks in my game to strafe some fletchers...LowN skills increased on the pilots from the action.

When training in anything version somewhat recent, strafe trains at 100 ft. The information from that post might be partly outdated. Another item I am skeptical of is the 5,000 versus 6,000 ft break point. Just be cautious.

Good to know. They do seem to still use the strafe skill, however. At least from what I've seen.

April 10 - 11, 1943

SUBS: Three contacts and three misses by subs. Feels like 42 again.

INDIA: I finally managed to get the old ladies some work. The 'R' class bombard Colombo and do some damage, but nothing like what I was expecting. It is a clear hex, but the spotter didn't get listed in the report, so maybe that was a factor. Or something I've been wounding about a bit in this Babes mod game; are forts stronger? Seems the Allied air forces that I remember decimating my ground forces hardly make a dent in anything that's dug in. Maybe that's a result of the better flak as well as the reduced bomb sizes. From what i'm experiencing here I'd say they're getting really close to the mark, and that makes the game fun and challenging. I can't just turn on the 4Es and pulverize everything turn after turn, and even BBs won't completely wreck a place like I've seen from the other side.

The next few turns will be interesting. I'll land a US ind. regiment at Colombo, where two bigger base forces and a garrison force are being worn down slowly. Then two of the big Chindits will land on the base, hopefully where the troops are already highly disrupted, and I hope will take the base. I've got 3-4 units of brigade size ready to move over to add on in case they don't, all fully prepped.

Armor will move into Ranchi tomorrow. Patna is overflowing with troops now, and they're ready to fan out to whatever other bases have been left undefended.

There bomber groups take out separate fragments of the same unit blocking the rail between Patna and areas to the E and NE. Interesting.

CENT PAC: Nick jumps the USN 4Es at Mili and downs 8 P-39 escorts, but the bombers get through for an anemic strike.

SO PAC: The APAs are about ready, so soon I'll try to move up to the more fortified area of Buin and Torokina. Nearby bases have fields but aren't quite ready to host the necessary groups to protect a big fleet.

CHINA: Supply is actually flowing up into the mountains past Srinagar and pooling at the little base up there. it's 9 hexes from Kashgar, so I'll start flying supply once the base force arrives in about a week. The first Corps is about a month away coming from Urumchi. Crazy, but worth a shot.

OZ: The remains of the Japanese shock, but can't kill themselves off.

April 12 - 13, 1943

INDIA: The landing at Colombo isn't ideal, as the guns and 70% prep result in 45 disabled squads. Hopefully the two big para units can get the base, but I'm just not sure how much of them will actually make it in one turn. I've got 230 transports lined up and ready.

SO PAC: Around Deboyne Island I have a lot of small shipping plus a number of xAKL and small xAP arrived to drop troops and supply. The Japanese went for it after many turns of simply letting things build here. Nick sent in a TF of old DDs. They disrupted the now fully unloaded larger TF, sinking a small xAP and two AM, then ran into 3 LST and sank those, then came up against the PTs. They had t

CHINA: The IJAAF struck against troops at Chungking. Interesting, and they came in at 6k, so I have to imagine this was not a planned strike. The Sallys lost 1 plane to flak with about 30% damaged.

Next stop Tsuyung for the Japanese as they shove back the ruined Chinese army in the mountains again.

OZ: The Japanese troops right next to Perth are chaperoned by two armor units. They're bombarding with little effect, but I'm sure Nick wants to run them out of supply and get them starved ASAP.

SIGINT: This is looking like a complete Indian evacuation!!! Recon is confirming that bases formerly occupied on the approaches to Calcutta are now vacant. I'll slowly survey the area as the armor moves forward with AA units. Some of our bases are still being reconned, so something is still left in the area.

Do not wast your Hellcats. Corsairs, Spits Mk.V and Lightnings should do much better or you can wait for P-47.

In a PDU off game I'd think the opposite. Don't waste my Corsairs and P-38s!!

The Spit Mk 5 I've got a few of, but nothing like 130/month for the Hellcat. I'm not really in a hurry here. I'll be using the CV groups to get them some exp and kills. They've not done enough this game yet and I don't want to risk CVs with carrier pilots averaging 70exp and almost no kills. I need at least half of each group to be 80exp pilots to start off. I can get that in PDU-off if I'm careful and use them defensively or sweeping around the edges of bases.

Nick seems to have one operational George group, and he's used them to sweep at will. The Hellcats provide some answer to this in combo with the Spits and some Kittyhawk III on CAP. On defense and with radar so far it seems good, and the George being service 3 isn't going to be doing this very often.

I had in mind that P-38 and F4U are doing better against N1K1-J. Personally I would avoid to engage his Gorges at all. You can train yours navy pilots on his Zeros and Oscars too.

April 14 - 15, 1943

SUBS: Finally the Salmon operating near Palembang hits and xAKL.

INDIA: The Chindits shocked, but the non-sync bug version resulted in a 1:2 and big disablements. I'll now shuttle in some more units and keep the supply unloading to help units recover. I'll get an HQ over soon too.

SO PAC: Nick has finally reacted. He sent in 8 old Kamikaze and Minekaze class DDs to around Deboyne Island where we had a big xAKL/xAP TF and a few other assorted transports, including a bunch of APDs. Those squared off first with the Allied ships holding their own in an inconclusive battle. Then the DDs found our PTs, sinking one, then they found the little transports, sinking two AMs and an xAP, then sinking 3 LCT. After this, having raced around a bit and expended a lot of ammo, the DDs looked a bit sluggish, only making another hex or two before the dawn. Bad place to get caught.

SBDs sortied from two bases without the dedicated escort unfortunately, but some got through a put a bomb hit on one DD. in the second strike I noticed they were 'dead in the water.' Ouch. In my replay the DBs sank them all, but in the real (non-sync bug version) only a few bombs landed.

Still, this set things up nicely for tomorrow. I risked sending in the cruisers but it was PTs that hit first and sunk three of the helpless DDs, while the cruisers were surprisingly ineffective, sinking only one more and leaving three to the later air strikes. Luckily a major 6 CA 10 DD TF missed us.

Beauforts, Beufighters, SBDs and P-39s finish the job throughout the day.

CHINA: Tsuyung is now being over-run.

SIGINT: I'll have to check but I think all thereof these divisions are being shipped out for the first time.

11/116th Division is loaded on a Yusen A Cargo class xAK moving to Nagasaki/Sasebo.
6/16th Division is loaded on a Japanese xAK moving to Nagasaki/Sasebo.
8/53rd Division is loaded on xAK Atlas Maru at Tokyo (114,60).

Two decent days in the air, even with the SBD losses. Most of the pilots who killed those were likely lost in the sweeps near Buin on day 2.

In defense the Hellcat and the rest do well against the George. What this doesn't show is that the Hellcat fought them for most of the battle likely getting many of these kills before the other groups arrived.

Our first Hellcat group, VF-71 from Wasp, with 30 F6F-3 so far, moves to Deboyne Island to try to entice the Georges out to play and see how we do. It's a good day!!

In my experience... poorly.

+1 to this :(

Well, if I want to use CAP ever I have to prepare for Georges to sweep it, so I have to make a good defensive location against sweeps. I've kept CAP down where I can.

SW PAC

Keep in mind this is a sync-bug pic, so not accurate, but this is a spot where I have to have some CAP. If not, I lose a bunch of ships whenever he decides to risk a strike.

I was disappointed more SDB didn't score, especially with ships dead in the water. The pilots are decent but inexperienced.

I don't really disagree with your strategic thinking here. I just know that the Hellcat can't hope to match the George given similar pilot quality. Corsairs do pretty OK, though.

Well, the George got a speed boost in Da Babes but so did the Hellcat. Problem with corsairs is there are only 30 a month. The Hellcat has got to be the go-to fighter for the time being. But Nic can't have endless George groups in this game. It is quite limited. I would fight them with Hellcats without reservation. The way you deal with George and Franks is to tangle with them and then bomb the snot out of them with 4Es. They are hanger queens and one or two air combats even if losing deals will put most of them on the ground.

The problem here is that you do have to use experienced carrier units but there is no reason why you can't pull the good pilots out of one or two of them and then use lesser pilots. Heck by this stage the Allies should have plenty of well trained carrier pilots. The Georges is not uber. I found the Hellcat equal to them in stock. They should be fairly close here.

While I have a lot of 60-75exp CV pilots, few have kills and I want more exp for them. I can get some exp by only flying CAP, but the only way to get kills (raising and testing their experience, air and defense skills) is to use them. I'll probably just use 2-3 groups and then keep skimming the best off.

April 17 - 18, 1943

SUBS: Perch gets an xAK in the DEI.

INDIA: A Brit brigade lands at Colombo. I'l attack tomorrow.

On the NE side I now see where the next blockades are and that the Japanese have not completely pulled out. Dimapur has around 2-3 divisions and several bases in the area will be reconned on the 19th, including Ledo, to see what to expect there.

CENT PAC: From a bombardment it looks like the Nauru troops are wearing down. I'll land more in the next weeks.

SO PAC: Had a good bombing run against a suddenly undefended Torokina. Over 50 hits on the fields by 2Es from Lunga. Then I did the unthinkable and left them on a second day! My mistake, as I simply didn't make the rounds this far to turn them off, even though I'd fully intended to do that. So ...

Nick moved 150 fighters into the damaged fields and the 2Es didn't get their escort (probably due to thunderstorms). We lost 90+ airframes, but most likely due to subs in the area, only 32 pilots. A little silver lining for an ugly day.

CHINA: Yuck.

SIGINT: The incredible run of luck with KB signal info continues!!!

In this case the may not indicate where the entire KB is hiding. I'd like to get some recon here, and I think with extreme LR B-24s I can do that from Ceylon. Soon!

a Soryu class CV is located at Langkawi (49,72). -17th

April 19 - 20, 1943

SUBS: Now that I'm getting subs in to good areas, and making contacts, like the Snapper finding a TK near Java, all of the duds are coming out at once. Two attacks, four fish, no hits.

The I-24 hits the AMC Worcestershire with one fish, but the big AMC should be fine with 20/32/0 damage and no fires. It'll detach from other transports (bringing one more brigade to Colombo) and head back to Bombay.

INDIA: Colombo is in Allied control again! A big day, but the job isn't finished. Troops retreat and move toward Dambulla. While they're moving here in the clear I'll bomb with everything available.

On the NE side of India I've begun to see where the next line of resistance will be located. It's around Dimapur, trying to hold the oil and Ledo fields for a few more months I'm sure. So far there appear to be 65k troops, about 3-4 divisions I assume. A few other bases nearby are also being built up. I'll have to check the yellow road around Dimapur to see if he's blocked that. This brings up interesting possibilities, as I can try to work my way around on both sides without necessarily having to hit the middle. He's got a long slog through the jungles if he lets the road through the Arakan get blocked and I don't see how he can't let that happen. I'll get some maps up soon.

CENT PAC: Loading up for another run at Nauru. Two cruiser bombardments will go in first. The AV there is dropping points daily, and I think from lack of flak that the troops are out of supply. Now, if I can land without the KB showing up ...

SW PAC: There is something up around Horn Island. A cruiser TF is hanging out one hex from Portland Roads inside the reefs, so it looks to be guarding rather than attacking. There is an amphib looking TF there and fighters are on the base. I'll bring in strike planes in case this is all there tomorrow and sweep the base with Hellcats.

CHINA: The IJAAF is starting to ramp up strikes on Chungking. I've now got fighters in range, and I may risk a few groups up there. Once up there if they don't have drop tanks they'll get stuck, but I can always eventually get them out across Central China to Western India if it becomes a real problem. Worth a shot, as there is no fighter support in China right now at all.

I don't think you will ever have enough supply in Chungking to take advantage of drop tanks.

Portland Roads is on the way at a level 5 field. Coen has a level 2 field. Cooktown is slowly building, now at level 3, but Port Moresby is not a bastion for the Japanese, with only about 4 units and 6k troops. I have two divisions prepped for it but I'll land only one first and see how that goes.

Before that though I'll take Oro Bay and Buna to have forward air support and search. They're lightly held and troops are staging now around Milne Bay. From Mornington Island and by fast transport from Portland Roads I'd like to quickly get some boots on the ground in the Islands off the West tip of the Gulf of Carptenteria, at Grote Eylandt, Gove and Wessel Island. If I take all three I can only support one from Mornington Island, but one is enough if it takes hold.

SW PAC HQ is now at Milne Bay and will support moves in the area (prepped for Port Moresby) and up the coast of New Guinea.

I'm at 21k right now, which is about as high as it's been. Drop tanks become periodically available if I reduce troop numbers so I could move some big Corps one hex next door and see if that helps, then fly them out. Of course Nick has to show his hand and go for the base with sweeps followed by bombing runs as well, and that may or may not go well for us.

Wish I had some radar there! Two zombie base forces are upgraded but won't take replacements, yet.

April 21 - 22, 1943

SUBS: Pollack hits a mine at Umboi Island, but looks like she'll make it to Brisbane and get patched up. Shad nails a small TK moving between the DEI and West OZ with two fish, then later a PB from the same TF with one! Just after I'd been complaining that nothing's been exploding!

INDIA: Not sure if I mentioned I've been pounding Addu Atoll. The fields there are a mess and I think the supply is running out. He's still seemingly flying Emilys from there though. Prepping some units, but won't be able to go there for a bit.

Next turn a tank brigade should cross into Calcutta! What a long time it's been since that city saw an Allied force nearby. Lots of units are ready to rail in and tanks will continue to fill space as we can.

CENT PAC: Two TFs are loaded and winding toward Nauru. I've tried to feint toward the island to see if he reacts, and I've set both to be 6-7 hexes away from it tomorrow. Then we'll go.

This follows the best bombardments yet on Nauru with a reported 26 guns disabled or destroyed.

SW PAC: Hellcats swept catching Oscars and Rufe's at LR CAP altitudes protecting shipping. Lots of kills! B-17s sortied to go after the amphibs and were harassed by some old A5M2s which they shot up pretty badly for no losses, but no hits on the ships either.

CHINA: After 106 IJAAF 2E hit Chungking on the 21st and supply drops by 700-800 from using the flak guns and airfield hits (even with heavy rain), I decide now or never. I move two 25 plane groups of P-40k into Chungking and another two into Paoshan. The Paoshan groups are set low, but he's been bombing at 15k at Chungking so I put them right on that mark.

It works like a charm. About half the bombers get through to put negligible damage on the fields, but 55 are reported shot down on the day!

At Paoshan thunderstorms and poor detection mean the Lilys get through unscathed. I'll transfer all of these that will fly to Chungking and see what he decides to do now.

Good day in the air. Nice that those were unarmored planes mostly, so a lot of experienced pilots likely lost too.

NE INDIA

Here is what we face next. He's digging in around the approaches to Burma, but with the amount of stuff I can now bring I'm not sure it's going to be enough. He also doesn't have very big fields here and with Corsairs, P-38s plus the addition of the new Hellcats, I'm not sure 200 fighters will be enough to hold at Dimapur.

My plan will be to try a move down the yellow road to get around Dimapur with several tank brigades and get more info about rear positions. If I can drop some of the big Chindits on some base back there that could really put a wrench in the forward defenses. I doubt he'll leave them without good protection though.

I'll be taking Darjeeling in the next two turns as well as Rangpur. I'll get fields going there quickly and only once I have them established enough to do something about it will I recon Jorhat, Imphal and Kalemyo. I'll be going for Tezpur as soon as AA units are railed in. Once Tezpur is captured and builds a field I'll start tanks toward the yellow road.

Nick is a good planner, and I don't think he'll get himself caught forward here, but these moves might force him to simply pull back without a fight, which at this point is a great option for the Allies.

Hellcats

In PDU-off Hellcats might just have the quality they had in reality. These guys faced Oscars and Rufe's and absolutely had their way, and so far only the Georges have gotten even kills against them. It helps that I'm using the Wasp's group, full of pretty experienced pilots. At 130 a month and without any major CV ops planned soon, these guys will continue to operate on land and pick up kills where they can.

clock is ticking in China. You might have to move faster than you would like, or just let China go, it's not fatal, but it frees up lots of divisions that need to be dealt with.

I definitely like it, just because it's different and I get to think differently about the process of the game and the conflict. I love PDU-off and trying to make do with obsolete planes through 42-43, knowing the monsters like the Jug are just around the corner. I like knowing that I can take risks with small stuff and don't have to be precious about fuel or supply.

It's more difficult to have to plan so deeply, but this is helping me stay organized. I could have been a bit better at second tier defensive planning in my long game there, and I think now I would be having played that game and this one.

We haven't had a carrier battle yet. That is something that terrifies me because I know what it can do, but I also know it's getting to that time when I don't have to be too concerned anymore about trading CVs, and the Hellcat and Helldiver will both be on board with the thousands of Bofors recently added to the fleet. I think in DBB I'll enjoy the late war flak the Allies will have.

Things are turning, but a lot of that is Nick's choice to allow the turn, not hold for dear life to various areas. That may be a smart decision to save his resources and units, but it's also giving me some opportunities.

Chungking will likely be a tough nut, and the recent addition of some air defense (100 P-40K) will mean he has to employ a more rounded air force here to sweep them away before returning to his bombing campaign. That could mean week's delay, but if my guys do well it could be more.

I can't really go any faster in India than I'm going now. I'm not worried about losing the Central part of China, and he would still have to fight into the Sian and Lanchow region if he wants to fully nullify the Chinese. It's good terrain up there.

The longer the Japanese are using 300-400 bombers a day in China (which have been going for over a year now, daily), and using the Armies to bombard and attack, the better we'll fare later elsewhere. There is no spare stuff in the Japanese economy, so the supply and fuel and HI to do what he's doing can't be used later. Even in my game where I had virtually no supply left in 45 against Jocke I stopped in late 42 in China after our ceasefire and concentrated on defense in other areas, and that was a stock scen 1 game where I got more supply from refineries.

I've just on my current turn flown some Hellcats and Corsairs into Paoshan to see if I can hold it long enough to fly supply in there. If I stop the Japanese from closing the mountains long enough to begin to push in NE India this could turn into their Afganistan. We'll see what he commits now. He's been flying 40 zeros sweeping for two days but I have a feeling he'll throw the kitchen sink for the next turn and try to close Paoshan. And he might do it. It's only a level two with little supply left. If he doesn't, it could be bad. I have 100 planes flying supply in now, and the field is nearly fixed. The long stuck Burma division (now an Indian division) plus an AA unit, two RAF base forces with radar and the China Air Task Force are there.
