CENT PAC

This are is getting ahead of prep. I'm just now starting the units for Roi Namur, which I didn't think I'd get to for another two months. Now though I'm loading up for Kwajalein so it should be sooner. Once the other islands in the area fall that will just be a matter of continual bombardment and I may be able to get it with partial prep and some paratroops.

Right now I'm really impatient to get this are resolved and finished so I can move on to more interesting things. I could really use the air units here in the So Pac area, but first things first. I don't want to get careless now.

Taongi, Bikini and Namu are next on the list. The first two as extended search bases. The later as a base for an Army HQ to help in he invasion of Kweijalen.

That is pretty darn clever, but do you think you will really need it? Your binary soldiers should be very proud of the CnC!

seems the Marshalls and the Solomons are almost in the bag. Nice work grinding him down. I suspect Nick is no fool and he has hardened the next layer. Gonna get interesting.

I assume the same. I think he intentionally made these a soft barrier just to slow the Allies, but the next layer will be stronger. My assumption is that he didn't want to sue the forces and resources to fight so far south, but maybe has been lured into it like a cat that sees a bird flying just a little too boldly near. I'm just trying to see his side of course, but the build-up in the New Britain and New Guinea areas was definitely recent.

I'll take a very traditional path for a while around Rabaul and will aim to move to Kaveing to cut it all off, with Nadzab, Lae and Finschafen on New Guinea becoming an interlocked airfield center that can control the skies and seas on that approach and throughout the area.

He seems to have some fortresses set up at Ponape, Horn island and a couple of others that you can see and probably a few in the DEI that you can't see.. He has a lot of AV at these places. He can't do that everywhere but it seems he is defending forward. Have to find a soft spot because tackling these strong points is going to be tough.he picked some great spots

Yes. They do look tough, but thanks to the Allied SIGINT I at least know mostly how tough. I can bypass the majority of them and leave others until late when they've been run out of supply and have either been reduced or he has pulled parts of the major units back. One difficulty of this for the Japanese that I found is that the whole unit can not often be removed once the area is locked down by Allied presence. So a fragment remains that is most of the heavy guns and support vehicles, tanks, AA and CD guns. Those then can't be used farther back if the Allied player simply bombs the place out of supply and lets them sit.

I've got a detailed plan for Horn Island and Merauke. I don't think they're ideal for defense or essential for Allied progress. Simple bombing campaigns can render them inert at the correct moment to move forward and past them.

Umboi is a tough one but I've got prep planned that helps me define a path here up toward Kaveing and around Rabaul. Once there are level 9 bases at Nadzab and at Kaveing (and possible level 8 bases at New Hanover and Mussau Islands) both Rabaul and Umboi would be cut off.

This isn't even the major area of offensive though! It's just a good productive area to combat the Japanese forces far from home, far from fuel production and far from shipyards. Slow is good down here in combination with the strain of the continual fight in China, CENTPAC and anything that happens in Burma.

July 12 - 13, 1943

SUBS: Subs again got two hits this turn. The pressure is ramping up.

INDIA: Another groups of P-47s makes land at Bombay. They're bound for Ledo.

CENT PAC: Bikini falls to the Allies and nearer to Wotje Nick unleashes the Jakes at 1k against my flotillas of small craft, APDs and transports in the Northern Marshalls. They pick the fast transport TF heading to Taongi and in two attacks hit the APD Kane with 3 x 60kg bombs, keeping the ship and one other out of the five from continuing on, but they'll make it. Two Wildcats disrupt the strikes, downing a god number of Jakes in the second strike especially.

Sometimes it's these little daily actions that really make this game special. I love the details, the two fighters doggedly defending their chanrges against more numerous enemy, and the ships' commander sending the rest on to compete the mission in spite of the damage. I'm currently reading "Fortress Against the Sun," al about the B-17 in the Pacific. It's filled wight eh small stories of duty and heroism, plus just the quirks of war that make so many of us crazy in game, but really were accurately adapted here with amazing elegance.

SO PAC: Some good hits by the cruisers at Buin and the air force at Torokina. Now I've got all three arty units installed by landing craft at Buin. I'll drop supply and get going.

Nick swept Shortlands with Franks and Hellcats and Spits got a slight advantage, and of course we lost no pilots over our base.

CHINA: The Japanese fail in another DA but hit hard. I'll be pressed to get troops in fast enough to shore the place up before the next one. If he uses the air force it could be lights out here, but will he risk it?

OZ: Starting to move toward Carnarvon. The surrounding forward fields are ready and the air groups are getting close.

SIGINT: But where is the 5th really going?

30/5th Division is loaded on xAK Syohei Maru moving to Singapore.
16/5th Division is loaded on a Japanese CM moving to Singapore.

11/36th Division is loaded on xAK Hiteru Maru moving to Palembang.

July 14 - 15, 1943

SUBS: Grampus finds big tankers heading toward Babs from Truk, but can't get a hit.

INDIA: Still fighting the monsoon to get supply to Ledo.

CENT PAC: The invasion of Kwejalein moves in and lands successfully. The troops get a 1:1 right off the bat, which I wasn't expecting, but a lot of squads were lost. The forts were reduced to level 3 though, and this bodes well. Will some naval support it shouldn't be long here. Now I have to get my troops from the West Coast to use for Roi Namur! I hadn't planned it anything like this early.

SO PAC: Starting to plan for Green Island and Buka. I am thinking I can pick them off even before getting finished at Buin and Torokina. Troops are ready, now I'll just have to get some air cover in place and quick transports.

CHINA: Nick tried a new tactic of hitting the Chinese with a small attack, probably only one armor division, and he accompanied it with air strikes today. In spite of the 1:2 result the Chinese took more heavy disablements and are reeling. I've got a unit on the way, but if he's able to attack again tomorrow, it could be lights out here and the battle from Chungking itself might be on the horizon.

But why bother taking them all? A couple of good air bases in the area and the rest of the Japanese bases are effectively dead.

I'm in a similar spot in one of my games (territory map is almost identical in the Pacific), and I'm doing the same. Honestly, I'm taking them all because I don't have the navy/shipping yet to push farther into the beehive. May as well grab the VPs for all these islands. Maybe obvert's reasons are the same. By eliminating them all he takes away any chance for GJ to fly in planes for surprise SLOC strikes.

Exactly .. the bases are not "effectively dead" and just a few Betty's can fly in on one turn and strike the next against vulnerable targets ..

Same goes for the dot bases - no VPs, but seaplanes can operate there, even without an AV/AVP/AVD for a while.
One player (Panzerjaeger Hortland?) did this in the Kuriles during a "Downfall" scenario - Hokkaido and all the Kuriles were Allied except one dot base. The Japanese flew virtually all their flying boats and float planes there and ambushed the allied fleets moving between Alaska and Hokkaido.
Huge numbers of CVEs sunk, with a lot of replacement planes for the allied CVs. The allies had to cease operations!

Some of the reason is the VPs, some is the stacking, and some is just because this affords more opportunities to make sure I have good extended search in place and active on any given turn. With 6k limits I can't fit much in the area on just the main bases, so I may as well land on the others, eliminate possibilities for the other side, and build certain ones into active bases from which I can move later. It also gives him a lot more to recon/search trying to see what's coming.

Also, even though he can buy back units and put them in rear areas, it takes HI/fuel to make armament/vehicle points and supply to fill them out again. It may not be much, but it's something.

If I have search flying from Nauru, Ebon, Bikini and Taongi it also reduces the chance of any surprise strikes against all of the shipping I have here.

One other thing we haven't mentioned - doing unopposed (except by weather) landings builds experience which will help later.

July 16 - 17, 1943

SUBS: No hits these two turns.

INDIA: Another P-47 group is nearing Bombay. This will make four groups once they're all here. I'll begin a process of picking around the edges once I send recon to assess what is going n in Burma. I want to see if he's using supportive multi-hex Cap or just over each hex. This will determine some of my later use of the heavies in the area.

CENT PAC: Maleolap falls! Now only Roi Namur and the already occupied Kweijalen to complete the Marshalls. I'm think of a Wake invasion soon now too, once I can install search on Taongi I'll start loading up. I have a Marine regiment 100% prepped and several other pieces at about half prep now. I also have prep going for Kusaie, but I'm just not sure if I'll even go there yet. It may be better to go around both Kusaie and Ponape.

I'll still have to watch out for low-flying Jakes in the Marshalls so CAP is doing heavy duty in the area, often at long range.

SO PAC: I've been bombarding consistently at Buin, and I'l be installing a Marine regiment soon. The Judys sortied for my PTs at Buin on the 17th, and I'll have to think about CAPing that base from Shortlands regularly. Strikes will hit both Torokina and Buin airfields once the weather clears up. They've been scrapped for two days now.

CHINA: Still fighting the supply battle Nick will take 76, 47 soon and looks to be trying to encircle the troops in the area. I'l try to limit that, but can't avoid it all most likely.

Thanks Jocke. I feel like I will see it soon, especially now that he has the 2nd gen fighters.

July 18 - 19, 1943

INDIA: Our invasion of Addu has launched and so did the Bettys! They came from Diego and went for some 'R' class BBs embedded in the amphib TF a few hexes out from Addu. I didn't think they'd sortie so far, but knew if they did there would be no torps, and that was the case. They were extended bomb loads and at 1k so half of that, and didn't hit anything. Whew. The US CVs are lurking and provided air cover for the 19th when the invasion landed. No strikes this day, and no sightings of the US CVs, plus, after several bombardments the troops easily took the out of supply base.

CENT PAC: Jakes sortied and got under the covering Wildcats to hit about five smaller ships and craft, sinking 1/3 of a naval construction unit. I hate not being able to protect ships, but I know this happens, and will more often as things heat up. The rest of the TF will continue on to Bikini with an addition of low FP CAP from Rongelap.

SO PAC: A bit more work at Buin and I feel the Japanese are weakening there. The Marines will land a regiment in the next days and then I'll attack for real.

CHINA: At 76, 47 the Japanese weaken the Chinese enough that it's a matter of days here now. I'm sending everything West now.

Reinforcements: The second Essex and first of the namable CVs arrived on the 19th in Balboa, the USS Alliance. I decided to use all names of ships from the Continental Navy during the Revolutionary War for the CVs. The CA/CL will have city names as was the tradition, and the DDs will be named after people, like my grandfathers and others I think are worthy.

July 20 - 22, 1943

SUBS: Another midget sub nailed by my surface forces at Buin after getting two errant fish off toward the Santa Fe.

INDIA: Nick puts up a large LR CAP over Imphal and sweeps the edges getting most of LR CAP. Of course the Wellingtons make it in before the faster B-25s and get riddled. Later the base is bombed by both sides to hit troops. Our B-25s get enough hits to likely slow the Japanese here, but one division, the shell of the 33rd, makes it out before the ensuing DA. We still get a 1:1 even though forts go to 0. The division eventually escapes, but a bunch of AA is left and destroyed when we take the base.

As Nick said, this is decisively the end of the India campaign. I'd say tactically he won that phase of the war, but strategically it seems like the time and resources used to fight there so long could have a lasting effect. We'll see.

CENT PAC: The battle at Kwejalein got a bit more interesting as a DA goes badly resulting in a completely disabled regiment. I thought we'd been chipping away for long enough at the Japanese units here, but apparently not. It didn't help that weather kept the bombers away. I'm loading up another ind. regiment at 97% prep and preparing an all out bombing and bombardment campaign. Other than this all seems well in CentPac. I've noticed some CM at Wake. I'll recon to make sure, and will get some Fletchers ready to roll.

SO PAC: Georges make a shambles of the CAP at Lae. Too bad. I thought these might do well there with some decent radar. Didn't get the early warning I had hoped for though, and the Georges got about 6:1. Still, he lost 6 planes over my base, we lost only 9 pilots KIA on the day (total), and other than the P-38s I'm not so concerned about the pools for these planes. Don't lie giving him kills for the surviving pilots though, so I've got to get some P-47s down here soon.

Attacked at Buin on the 21st and failed to knock the forts down, but did get a better result in terms of disabled squads. I'll attack again on the 23rd now that a reinforcing Marine regiment has landed safely.

CHINA: Nick finally knocks the Chinese out of 76, 47. It's been a long fight there. He'll be able to mop these up as they retreated into the surrounded area to the East. I'll run them to the East one hex further to the x3 terrain, but the only hope is that they again retreat to the NW next time. Chungking is finally moving up in supply levels.

Overall, not too terrible, but the Georges sure had their way with the Spits and Kittyhawks. Makes sense in this mod as they're 30-40mph faster than those planes.

Rise of the Lurker

Having just finished Gamble's Rabaul trilogy, I noted several things that I wish WitP AE could model. I mention this based on recent comments several people discussed about the Marshal Islands (need to conquer the entire chain) and fighter observations in your game and many others.

1. The Japanese Reisen was still a very capable plane through much of 1943 in the hands of a skilled pilot. It was a very good match to the P-38 and to a lesser extent the F6F and F4U. I think this models fairly well in the game at this stage.
2. The Japanese were defeated at Rabaul (and elsewhere) for a variety of reasons - pilot and crew illness, lack of aircraft service and parts, US submarine interdiction, and declining morale all played huge roles. Allied pilots and planes were never vastly superior to the Japanese, BUT Allied logistics and replacements were a deciding factor.
3. Japanese attrition losses were poorly trained in relation to their American counterparts.
4. Japan made large quantities of replacement planes but lack of transport logistics, and lack of ground-staff to service, UN-crate, and assemble new planes was another critical factor.

I think the game doesn't portray #2-4 well.

I do not for a moment consider myself an Allied fan, but I find it illogical to allow Japan has the capability (foresight) to build better planes early and escorts without some Allied counter. The Europe first strategy initially was 90% Europe and 10% Japan; this was increased to around 70/30 during the Solomons/NG campaign. If Japan had prevailed at Midway or Guadalcanal, the Allies would have needed to react accordingly.

Re: the resilience of the Japanese on Kwajalein, is it possible he is bringing in replacement troops via Mavis/Emily transport?
The Marshalls are ideal for operation of this kind of air bridge.

Strangely this portion deleted in the first post..so to continue...

I don't consider myself an Allied fan in the game, but I don't find it logical to allow Japan a broad capability (foresight) to build better planes early as well as many other perks without some Allied counter. The Europe first strategy initially was ninety percent Europe and ten percent Japan; this was increased to around seventy to thirty during the mid-Solomons/NG campaign. If Japan had prevailed at Midway or Guadalcanal, the Allies would have needed to react accordingly, Pearl Harbor was too strong an incentive for the Americans to end the fight. Unfortunately the Allies don't have this luxury of addressing worse than historical performance in this game. Historically the Allies were initially hampered by poor leadership and tactics; their tactics improved but the deciding factor was logistics, and quantities of materials produced. This flood of materials ultimately overwhelmed the Japanese when coupled with attrition of the Japanese merchant fleet and eventual destruction of Japan's industry. Sadly game mechanics lead to the Allied pursuit of campaigns in the DEI and the Asian main-land to deny assets to the Japanese at their production point rather than during their transit. Allied policy during the war was never to get embroiled on the continent as the goal was never to face the bulk of the Japanese army; the limited interventions in the DEI during 1945 were exactly that - limited. Consider Japan had over seven million men under arms in 1945; they had around 2.5 million men in 1941 to 42. Thirty years later, American attempts to fight in Vietnam proved the insanity of fighting a land war against an endlessly replenishing Army. Japan was a Naval power in the pacific, a Military power on land and a mercantile state that needed its merchant fleet to bring resources home. Destruction of Japanese naval and merchant marine forces as principal doctrine went back for decades in American planning with strategic bombing a relatively new concept.

All of that stated, Obvert is doing a great job against a very skilled Japanese opponent in a game that does not favor Allied victory in such circumstances.

I've considered that he could do this ( I do it extensively as Japan) but the risk is that then you lose twice as many troops for not much more gain. I think Nick is pragmatic in his defense so far. There are rules.

The rules state that he will not put too much too far forward even to slow the Allied movement there when the opportunity arises. CentPac is too far forward for him and as others have stated, already a lost cause. I'm moving around Kwajalein/Roi-Namur even as I battle for them. If anything I would guess he's pulling a few troops out.

All of your points are very good and valid. You even miss a few like the Volcanic dust that plagued engines at Vanukanau airfield at Rabaul and the lack of good radar/spotting networks (at least early on) to warn of incoming raids, their lack of good aircraft dispersal at many airfields plus the inflexible doctrine that pushed them to keep sending in replacements to airfields that were obviously untenable after the Allies gained air superiority.

Add to that the coast watchers and other warning networks in place for the Allies plus the increasing native resentment of the Japanese in the entire Solomons/New Britain/New Guinea areas and the Japanese were fighting too many types of battles too far from home to find success.

It is different in game, but I think we accept this as it's a greater challenge. It makes playing Japan more tenable for the years it takes to play this game, and it also forces the Allies to play smart, not just rip through with no fear of losing anything due to the weight of stuff arriving (at least before 44).

Political and colonial interests are also not portrayed in game, and those might have had more to do with the Allies not landing in Sumatra or Java in the war, although it certainly would have led to some logistical difficulties in reality as well.

All together this is a very fun ride, and since Nick has agreed to playing PDU-off (with the caveat of the extra troops and air groups of Scen 30), and is loving it, I'm fine with the differences to real world capabilities. I don't play for simulation, but I do like to imagine that I'm dealing with the same kinds of problems as the commanders faced then. They were pretty good. Can I get close to what they accomplished?

PS - This may be a repeat for you after the Rabaul trilogy, but I'm reading "Fortress Over the Pacific" right now and it's very detailed and revealing of the problems the Allies faced as well in terms of logistics and operations, not all of which are mirrored in game.

It does point out though that the Fortress was just that; a castle in the sky that was perilous for a Japanese pilot to attempt an attack on. yes, they were shot down, but nearly every encounter includes a tally of destroyed zeros, and in many of those encounters all of the B-17s made it home. The real problem was getting enough to the point of attack due to the lack of parts, insufficient ground crews and facilities (at least up until mid-43) and horrible weather conditions.

I suspect Japan was wise to know their limitations and stick to radial engines. There are merits to both radial and water cooled engines but the Japanese logistics system simply could not support the increased maintenance of water cooled power plants. The Tony is early war exception. good plane, but maintenance kept many on the ground

July 23 - 25, 1943

SO PAC: This was a crazy few days. First the Marines turn the advantage decidedly to the Allies at buin and the base is captured in a 6:1 attack. Base forces and support move in and land over the next few days, but ...

... Nick goes all in to hit them. This actually looks worse than it is for the Allies, just by chance, and I feel pretty good about the results. The aerial assault hits a TF that is mostly small Dutch caps worth 2 points each carrying an Aviation Engineer battalion. If there is one thing the Allies can afford to lose it's engineers!!

Luckily the entire base force had landed and much of the Marine Defense battalion. So now the base is repairing, some damaged ships are disbanded in the port, and CAP is moving into place to protect the base. On the day the Japanese lose over 190 planes according to reports, and that means we also have a bunch of new aces.

I'm loading up looking for an opportunity to land at Torokina now. He still has a large naval presence at Rabaul, but I have some ideas about that.

INDIA: Nick hits the reinforcements for Addu with 60+ Bettys!! Yikes. I didn't think to put CAP here yet, but he was bold and we failed to make him pay a price. Le Triomphant will make it, but two xAPs will not. Troops are saved by the other ships, which is nice.

Getting some supply into Chittagong and the area by sea now.

CENT PAC: Kwajalein is hit hard from the air. Troops will land and hopefully this time they'll get the base first try after some BBs bombard. I've got one embedded and three in a separate bombardment TF.

CHINA: The Chinese are getting pushed all over now, and hopefully I can still retreat a bunch to the NW. Wenchow receives an attack and the defense does well to injure the Japanese, but only lots of disabledments.

SIGINT: Interesting. I'l bet this is heading to the Marianas or to the Kuriles. Oh, wait, lookie here!

It changed destination already, so at least I can vector subs to the general area.

Also, another ship report, this time a CL in Darwin port. To much CAP and not enough escort range to hit it though.

Lots of Judys, Jills and A6M5 downed. I have to remove the aces from the P-39 and Wildcat groups now before they get mauled as escorts or lower CAP during George sweeps!

Ship Losses

A few xAKs here worth some points, but nothing too bad. Still, I hate losing ships. I know it's inevitable though, and in this case both in VPs and in available lift for troops in the area, this is not too bad.
