The north is really fluid. I'll try to keep the momentum and push to the Dvina. The preferred crossing is the gap between Livani and Daugavpils because of favorable terrain.

At the land bridge I have moved three armies from Bryansk front into position. My best artillery divisions are also in this area and keep pounding his line. The number of fighters participating in this attack is astounding. So are his bomber losses. However, it's not all going well in the air.

The eastern bank of the Dnepr has been cleared.

The Russian air force is at work 24/7. Losses are high but the ratio is favorable. The Luftwaffe is slowly beaten to a pulp.

so you are going for the direct road to the Reich, rather than clearing the western Ukraine?

this remains an engaging, but utterly cheese free, masterclass in how to play the Soviets

Thanks, yes I think it is pretty much a cheese free game. I still have organizational problems in 41 and early 42 and wasted a lot of APs fixing mistakes I made earlier.

Plans have changed for sure. He put a wall of steel in front of me in the south. He really threw everything but the kitchen sink at me. There is no point in hammering tanks against level 3 forts with elite units in them so I decided to use my tanks elsewhere. The good thing is that all the other sectors of the front are kind of weak now. And he constantly has to shift his remaining mobile forces from one hot spot to the other.

Pushing towards the Dvina. On the western edge of the front I put a Stavka reserve army to hold the front at Riga. Everything else storms south.

I think I have chosen a route he didn't expect. Artillery support reaches unprecedented levels and fighter participation is tremendous.

I am scouting the Dvina. Multiple weak spots have been detected. I will attack next week. Riga will be ignored for now.

Vitebsk is encircled with 3 Panzergrenadier divisions. I could make a solid encirclement with tank corps but they would just get slaughtered to following turn. Instead I just ZOC lock the units.

Large scale battles in the south with heavy resistance. Once the elite units had a turn of rest they are very hard to displace.

The defenses at the Dvina are too weak. I am able to cross the river at 3 locations. However, I am not able to establish a solid bridgehead yet.

I continue to exert heavy pressure at the landbridge. The 3 Panzergrenadier divisions have retreated from Vitebks but were only able to move two hexes.

A frontal attack on Chekassy fails despite incredible men/artillery ratios.

Very tough now. I can still get a couple of successful attacks especially if I am able to attack from three sides.

looks like Stef has done a great job in stalling you in the south, but your breakout from the Dvina could be really dangerous if it forces him to pull out of Bielorussia in order to escape encirclement.

Think you've done really well shifting your forces and also putting in such a strong attack after you took Pskov - that does seem to have really stretched his resources

Yes, he has done a great job stopping me at various locations. The 43 German army is capable to stop almost every Russian offensive by simply throwing everything but the kitchen sink at it. But then I simply shift my troops to other areas where he is weak and more and more holes open up.

He has recognized the danger of crossing the Dvina. He has also now recognized the danger of my attempted breakthrough north of Kiev. There are lots of troop movements on both sides right now. It's a very interesting game.

It's the job of the Russian player to prevent a WW1 style game play. I attempt to do this by pincer movements that threaten large scale encirclements. No Axis player will allow these encirclements but it allows the front to move westward with reasonable speed.

KUDOS to yourself (as for Stef) for your persistent and effective offense. Same ? as for Stef: what is your time goal for Berlin?

Doesn't matter to me. I just want to finish one game as the Russians and get to Berlin once. I think I found an opponent who is willing to play the game to the end. There are not many games that actually make it till the end. Once we are done I will offer a switch of sides and also fight to the bitter end.

The game really stirs up emotions. The 41/42 campaign is nerve racking for the Russians and from 43 on it just gets desperate for the Germans. Both has to be experienced.

Solid bridgehead established now. I am using one rifle corps in light woods to protect the bridgehead.

I've been working on a breakthrough north of Kiev for a couple of turns now. I am able to make steady progress against weak enemy forces.

Brutal trench warfare in the south. The first attack gets repelled but the second attack with fresh forces succeeds.

Axis OOB is slowly shrinking now. Luftwaffe is being ground down turn after turn. Luftwaffe is no longer able to provide ground support for every battle.

Not a good idea....

My wife and my daughters wouldn't appreciate another "wargamer" at home. In fact they call this game "the little war".
