Germany fields a team with a payroll of 321 million while America fields a team that cost 26 million. We lost by one what a boring game, fell asleep three times watching this game. For the rest of the world I am truly sorry that soccer is the only major sport in your country. I do thank God now we have other sports!

I think what is clear is that so far this has to be one of, if not the most, entertaining World Cups ever. Of course there has been the odd dud, but if you choose to judge football on that one game then that's a bit short-sighted imo.

But fair enough, if football is not for you then its not for you.

But why the usual, lazy ill-judged digs against anything non-American... Which countr(ies) are you talking about having football as their only major sport? I assume you are referring to all as you state "the rest of the world". Seriously?? I mean seriously? Ever heard of Cricket, Rugby, Motor Racing, Horse Racing, Tennis, Golf, swimming, cycling etc etc etc

Oh and one final thing, "payroll" has an effect on sport - of course it does. But if you think money is a guarantee of success then you simply do not understand sport. It never has, it never will - that's one of the reasons why people love sport - especially football.

It is not really the rest of the world Football is Europe, Latin America and Africa in fact. And there are exceptions. I don't think it is the most popular in Finland (ice hockey), or Cuba (Baseball?).

That leaves huge chunks of land. Most of Asia (if not all of it): China and India with their mega population numbers; US and Canada, Australasia.

But it is an objective fact that it is the most universal mega sport.

As always, to each his own

Brazil v Chile looks like it is going to be a tasty encounter today and I am most certainly looking forward to Mexico v Netherlands tomorrow. I like this Mexican side.

Right guys. We are getting down to the serious business.

Bets wishes,
Steve

Yes, really looking forward to all games - especially the four this weekend.

You know when its the pointy end of a tournament - England aren't there

Yep, really enjoying this one. There is going to be a red card at some point isn't there?

I can't believe how "bad"* Brazil are. Lucky they have Neymar because they seem to be carrying at least 2 players (Hulk and Fred).

I can see Chile winning this 2-1.

* Everything is relative - they are still better than England.

Only just.
They are having as many chances as England normally do, but still only 1 goal.

Ilike the penalty kick rule. I suggest they add another rule. When games are boring, after first half. Conclude the game beginning the second half with penalty kicks.

Brazil disappointing (again), Chile unlucky, Colombia impressive (both goals were real beauties), Uruguay mediocre without the Cannibal.
Great fun to watch all those games.

If you applied the same rule to American Football every game would only last for one quarter, although it would be fun watching some of the behemoths trying to run up for a penalty kick

I think baseball would fare even worse. Imagine if the game were over after the first inning. No more hours of waiting till a point is made in the 9th inning.

But then again US sports are not boring, every few minutes adverts are shown in telly.

Don't get me wrong I like watching the NFL and sometimes a MLB game, then again I understand the rules and tactics.

So...

Really tense game Brazil-Chile, couldn't believe Julio Cesar stopping the penalties but I was more shocked by that guy who missed the entire goal structure lol, how you manage to do that? how you manage to do that while being Brazilian!? haha. So good for him that they advanced.

Really impressed by James Rodriguez, couldn't watch the whole game and hadn't watched any of Colombia matches either until now. Really impressed by James Rodriguez, I just googled him and see he plays for Monaco, wouldn't be surprised if he got a new deal from a bigger club.

There's only one way to end the wide popularity of football. Convince tens of millions of kids across the world to stop playing this game

In fact if the US team have improved it's merely because many American kids play this sport. This is exactly like mining: the more kids play => the more great (the diamond, gold), solid players might appear. And then there's some important, planned work: academies, coaches, etc. No rocket science.

In the end these many kids playing build the essential base of the pyramid. And it looks like -surprising to me though- you have this base.

But the opposite can't be said. Almost no kids outside of the US play American football.

It's basically a weak kid sport. No upper body strength required as even girls can play with boys.

What's more powerful? A punch or a kick? A kick, obviously, leg is bigger than arm. In case of doubt, stay behind a donkey or horse and provoke him/her

Ball velocity? 174,5 km/h was reached by Brazilian player Eder (80s)... 108 mph that is... And we are not talking about a tiny handball ball.

Sooooo...

Compared to this the balls thrown by quarterbacks could have been thrown by er... ballerinas for that matter

As always out in round of 16. 5 minutes before history, then it all went to hell.

Oh well, rooting for Concacaf now, CR advanced, now is the turn of the US. I want to see Concacaf semifinal!

Er, whut? Girls can drive racing cars as well, does that mean NASCAR* is rubbish? Liking one sport does not mean that every other sport in the world in automatically rubbish. Except golf, which is. Generally I don't like 'American' sports, they're generally far too stop-start for my liking but it doesn't mean I'm against them.

*Other motorsports are available.

I'm still angry about how Mexico lost that. If they had continued playing post the goal as they did before then they would have won. They threw a golden opportunity away
