Newbie strategy question - 6/4/2014 11:23:45 AM

Morning! I'm new to the game as I've been playing only 3 or 4 days....but IMO, it is one of the best 4 X games ever. I've been doing some research on the forums and now think I know how to repair my economy. One thing I have not had time to research, so please bear with me, is how to coordinate my fleets to properly protect all my NEWER worlds as my empire grows. I have about 15 colonies, and I had been building a Space Port on each one (now I know not to...and will change that)....but I have a problem in that when I cancel a pirate protection or if I end up in any conflict with a fairly large empire, I get attacked at so many locations at once that I can't protect them in time. The pirates, for example, usually hit me at 4-5 locations. I immediately send my forces, but they overwhelm and destroy the local defenses before I get there. Of course, if they attack a developed system, I can easily defend. It just takes a long time to travel the distances, etc. Does anyone have any general advice as to good ways to defend newer worlds when something goes awry? Perhaps I'm expanding too aggressively. I have 3 fleets of about 8-12 ships each....and I immediately had been building a spaceport and at least 2-3 PDUs or infantry per planet. I am manually building/upgrading everything...and am pretty aggressive in technology as well. Thanks in advance!

You are probably over-extended.

You should focus on pushing the pirates away, and only expand when you feel you can protect the new colony. If they have no base in your vicinity, they have no ships at a base that will figure out that attacking you is what they should do.

If you have a lot of small colonies and few wealthy ones, you will not be able to protect everything in war. Have some garrison, and be better at conquering small colonies than your enemies. If they grabbed a colony it could have a ton of troops, and not be worth your time. Visit in once in a while to see if the troops have been lifted, do not prevent troop carriers of the enemy to load there if you want to invade it yourself.

Know what your core/rich worlds are, and protect them properly with fleets, structures, and troops. An early warning network of long range scanners allow you to wait for attacks if you are close/fast enough. When placing long range scanners, consider that the source of enemy attacks are not random. Where did that fleet start from? Where did it load the troops? That is the path that needs a scanner.

You can also set the pirates to "few" and to "weak" if they are too much to handle.

Thanks guys. I can handle the pirates...just not everywhere at once. I'll work on strenthening my core assets and expanding only when I'm defended. Of course, it will help when I repair my economy. I had no idea that building 15 spaceports was a bad idea, nor have I allowed my new colonies to get a high enough population before taxing. Lessons learned. With a better economy, I can afford to build defense bases, early warning stations, and even more ships.

here's my defense strategy (and not only against pirates):
- set up fleets of 4 to 5 destroyers (i usually go with 5 since the number looks better in my eyes), one per system with a colony. They'll be your defensive fleet.
- for each fleet, set home base, set stance to defensive and range to nearby systems (this can be done by selecting the fleet and in the small fleet window bottom left, use the bottom buttons to set home base, stance and range), then set the fleets to auto: they'll defend the system from incoming attacks and maybe sometimes they'll be able to defend also in nearby systems (but don't hope too much on that :p)
- in each colony, set up 5 troops garrisoned: they'll crush any incoming raid that'll pass through the defensive fleet
- build 1-2 fleets of 20+ ships
- don't try to defend every system in which you have a mining station, you won't be able to, just destroy/recapture or rebuild stations

To crush pirats:
- don't cancel protection agreement from all pirates in one go.
- select one pirate clan, steal territory map, cancel agreement, send your big fleets to crush all known pirate bases of selected clan
- rinse and repeat with all clans thou find offending in thy eyes.

- with all other pirates with which you still have protection agreement, set up 10 to 15 troops and troops transport ships to carry them.
- for all planets with more than a hidden base, send this army and destroy the pirates facilities: it won't break protection agreement at once, so don't worry.
- for all planets with just a hidden base, the 5 garrisoned troops should be enough to wipe them from your worlds

After that, you'll only have to deal with these pirates occasionnally on your territory, but you'll still have to chase them away all the time since as long as they have bases somewhere, they'll come back.

And btw, i always check the box "pirates don't respawn" in the settings of a new game x)

Setting pirates to not respawn breaks downs some of the immersion though, piracy will always exist no matter how well developed civilization becomes. When you take down one group of pirates another always rises to take it's place, this has how it has been throughout history.

Anyways, as suggested above construct "security forces' to defend your territory. I always use destroyers to this effect, and later on i usually add a cruiser to each one. Ensure that they have the speed necessary to catch their prey however. If your warp drives are slow, they won't be able to respond quickly enough to prevent loss. Invest in long range sensors, and gravity wells. I like to set up 'check points', in choke points where pirates are likely to pass through on their way to attack me. Here they will be forced out of warp and fired on by a small number of ships and a station with alot of firepower.

Also, do not put ALL of your ships in a fleet. Ships that are not assigned to a fleet will automatically take patrol and escort missions which i've found to be helpful in countering pirates in the early game, as well as dealing with the occasional pirate that slips through my checkpoints. I use mostly Escort role ships for this, with a small number of specially designed frigates and destroyers.

True, but since i consider them a challenge early game but just annoying late game, i keep them in the game settings but don't want them to come back when i succeeded in wiping them out

Yep, forgot about that but it's very useful

ah on this point, i'm playing differently and never let ships roaming out of a fleet, except for the resupply ships.

Really? O.o, lol i suppose you wouldn't need them so much with all the pirates dead xD
