Mundy has plenty of spirit but it seems like he is trying to play against the AI...

Edit: Clarification - as if he expects the opposing side to abide by the game plan....

I'm in no position to criticize anybody's play, but it seems to me Mundy is playing rather reckless. I think he relies on the Allied preponderance of ships and units so much that he doesn't feel the need to minimize losses, or try to gain a tactical advantage. Then again, I think some players, myself included, just reach a breaking point for whatever reason and start making a lot of poor decisions out of a sense of futility. As long as I've followed this PBEM, it just seems he keeps coming at you in the same old way, and you keep smacking him down the same old way. Just my thoughts on how things have transpired to date.

I have not read either AAR closely enough to make specific assesments but I think Mundy thinks on a tactical rather than strategic level and is very straightforward about what he is going to do which gives the Japanese player plenty of time to get set up to defend whatever it is.

For the allies to be successful they have to force the Japanese to make choices with their limited assets and then exploit the holes created because not everything can be covered.

By now Mundy should be able to go where he wants but I think that attrition in the game has limited his options significantly.

It just goes to show that an Allied victory is not guaranteed!!

Ooo, sneaky.. If he doesn't bring aircover (long range CAP) he'll have a big issue defending against my Helens.... And if he brings CAP, I'll pour it on with sweeps...

Troops landing at Moresby, looks like around 2100 AV, including Australian infantry, armour and US infantry (two divisions).. I've got a division with corps support defending it, forts 6... He'll take it, no doubt, but he committed a large number of CVEs and troops here... If he wants to use them for Moresby... Thats not bad at all.....

Main reason for him to take Moresby is to threaten Rabaul... Rabaul is very well defended..

Been mulling it over and decided to move navy transports to Rabaul. In addition I've broken up the two infantry divisions I have at Rabaul and started preparing with the "C" detachments for Moresby.. Once the escort carriers present leave I'll start flying in some reinforcements... 70 transports should account for 70 squads a day, about the amount I lost (including disabled) in a day of combat...

This won't leave Rabaul weak.. I've got 1 1/3 of an infantry division and an armoured division left (and ample support)

India is using 25k supply (net, so air supply is accounted for) a month at the moment... I've got 71k left so once my cruisers are repaired I'll risk another large supply run.... 50k would buy me two more months.... More if I withdraw another infantry division...

Mundy's biggest problem is also his greatest strength: his bullheaded determination. He will continue to pursue a strategy past the point of wisdom (India). There's a great quote about war: "No plan survives contact with the enemy". Mundy might have heard that before but he does not play with that in mind.

Where are Mundy's CVs? Of course whatever he has in the CentPac cannot reach Port Moresby without sailing through enemy waters. Lot's of opportunities here...

I do not know where the CVs are.. I would say CENTPAC somewhere, or maybe standing of Moresby (which would be a strategic blunder time wise, unless he plans to blast through my waters, back to where the important fight is : CENTPAC...)

I did not mention this before but I withdrew my carriers to the HI for repairs and refit... Should be a week or three before they'll be operational again.. If Mundy tries for anything important I'll have my pants on my ankles but the refit was needed.... Hoping the FLAK upgrades will help... My fleet should be mostly upgraded after this...

those 30mm guns should be good against heavy bombers this is why they were used
I don't know if the game models it

They (the IJ) might have dreamed that, but the fact is the 30mm is/was crap. very low ROF, bad ballistics, very poorly matched with the 20mm. think bolt action rifle (Springfield/Enfield). Yes, if it hits even a 4E will suffer considerable damage, but IF is a big word. They would have been much better served with 4x20mm and for the weight they could have gone with 6x20mm which would have been really deadly.

The Ho-5 was derived from the US M2 50 cal. Very high ROF, good ballistics. There is some data to suggest it struggled with jamming due to difficulty getting tempered metal for the auto feed, but that isn't modeled in game. So, the Ho-5 comes out as good or better than the Hispano.

I've never seen the 30mm in action in this game. The accuracy seems low.. We'll see how it goes, at least it can tangle with P47s and still have 2 x 20mm available....

Accuracy in game is composed largely of ROF ... that explains why so low. The ROF was deplorable ... so in game the Frank II is hugely undergunned compared to the P47 and that hurts it. essentially it is 2x20mm against 8x50 cal putting it at a 2:1 disadvantage in firepower. Just be aware of that when using them ... they will need plenty of down time to repair damage. On the up side, they can fly with almost anything the allies have.

A good old fashioned destroyer party! One of the US destroyers launches torpedoes at 10k yards and hits the Okinami... Damage is not to bad though, she can still make 25 knots and should make it home... Japanese radar functioned, the allies didn't have any?

Starting to think about defending against the Soviet horde.... Sangeli mentioned a strike ahead of reinforcements but I would rather dig in the way I defend China when playing allies.... Delay as much as possible

Anybody with experience in Manchuko reading this?

If you are asking about defending aaginst the sov in '45, then the answer is:
in depth, multiple mlr's
you must maintain air superiority to hold any line
min of 2 of your 3 arnor divisions have to be used.

the sov replacement rates mean that you will eventually lose any mlr position ... all it takes is one bad roll on your part and they are through. having said that, IF you have the above and an intact helen force you can hold a position for months. Air superiority and the ability to disorganize his units from the air is a successful defense.

two caveats to the above:
1. you burn supply like you never saw in any earlier part of the game. 10K/turn is EASY to use against the SOV. this means to have any chance to keep this defense up, your economy needs to be intact. let's just say that is really tricky in late '45.
2. you are obviously committing a substantial portion of your forces to this. again, very tricky to be able to do that in '45.

the two cavets above are why taking the sov out early, like the chi, is a very intriguing concept. it is clearly a big gamble. however, unless you are able to cripple the US forces (4E and naval), I have not seen a successful defense against the SOV hordes. and once you lose the korean penninsula, like losing hokkaido, the ij eceonomy is rapidly crushed.

In my current game, I'm exploring late '42, early '43 moves against the sov. it isn't so much can the IJ go it. at that point of the war, the ij can do anything they want. it is though a question of trade-offs. going into sov means NOT going somewhere else. also, what will the US do? they would certainly get 'frisky' ... but can they do anything that matters or only annoys? questions to be answered ...

So I should pick spots where I can easily maintain AS and where he will struggle.. My fighters and airforce should be of a higher quality and I have 10 million supply of which 5 in Japan, 1.5 in Manchuko..

So - Good ground and forts / can be covered from the air / his inbound route in clear terrain....

Interesting fights at Moresby and Ponape... First we lose a pair of submarines to allied depth charges.. Japanese subs are relatively worthless by now... I have Kaitens operational, if they manage to target something interesting that would be fun to watch...

At Ponape, another division and co lands... They take some casualties and the 14cm battery lights up a few BBs and a DD... At Moresby an HQ with some minor lands. The allies launch another deliberate and are repulsed with medium losses. Time to try and fly in some reinforcements and hope CAP is asleep...

Last turn for a week - going on a holiday!

How things can turn with a bit of reinforcing... Mundy pushes ahead and it looks like he'll succeed within the month at both Ponape and Moresby. Well done by him! If only I had my carriers available as he is pretty reckless at Ponape (no air cover)...

At least I am collecting tax in squads destroyed...

Kuma with destroyers swoop in and attack, sinking a DD and a pair of DEs for the loss of one of their own..

The transports I had set to reinforce Moresby get shot down, 24 of them.. Murderous CAP but it was worth a shot..

Situation 1945-01-20

Ponape falls (a bit quicker then I expected, he doubled his AV and backed it up with bombardement...). Moresby will fall within a few days...

I lose another light cruiser and two destroyers trying to get through to the transports (he was ready for it this time)..

Sadly my carriers are still refitting, combat reports below the screenshot.. I've got around 4 divisions worth below Lunga and I'll start the airlift to get some of the AV back up north. One division and one brigade can be airlifted out without leaving behind fragments so that is a plus.

Rabaul is the next logical step.. He'll need around 3k AV to take it (I got two infantry divisions and a tank division dug in). By the time he is ready I should have my carriers available so that gives me options..

N1K2 fighters attempt a high level sweep of Ponape but run into even higher flying P47s (two squadrons)... 20+ navy fighters shot down for no loss to the P47s.. Better to let the US come to me...

Good news in Burma, where a Japanese division catches up to a retreating yanks.. The allies take heavy losses....

Rabaul

Sweeps hit Japanese CAP (around 120 Franks and 30 Georges). Most of the CAP is set at 40% at 10 - 25k feet.. I find that the 40% setting is most effective against fighters sweeps but the massed 80-90% is better against bombers...

Around 12 waves hit Rabaul so fatigue is a problem.. Corsairs and P38s take a lot of damage, P51s some.. The single P47 squadron he used does a lot of damage for just a single op loss... I hate the P47...

The CAP (around 70 aircraft left) will have to stand one more turn but I've got relief on the way. About 130 George fighters will relieve the four squadrons holding the fort tomorrow and 100 Franks will join within 3 days...
