Nothing

Nothing happens... No sweeps, no bombing of Rabaul... Tactical mistake if you ask me.. He can't afford to bleed fighters just to get a feel for the water temperature.. If he attacks it should be to close down the airfield...

Calcutta

Over the next couple of turns I'll try to resupply India.. 45k of supply is ready. 400 fighters, 120 dive / torpedo bombers and a cruiser taskforce will cover the approach and unloading procedure...

Sweeps hit Japanese CAP (around 120 Franks and 30 Georges). Most of the CAP is set at 40% at 10 - 25k feet.. I find that the 40% setting is most effective against fighters sweeps but the massed 80-90% is better against bombers...

I've never heard anyone say 40% CAP is a good setting for LBA fighters. Wouldn't having more planes in the air make your CAP more effective against enemy fighters? Personally I use 100% CAP when I use range 0.

Less fighters rise to meet each sweep so the fighters can have more strength after multiple sweeps.

When you go 100 / 0 there are many more planes on the initial sweep but the numbers drop off much faster after multiple sweeps.

It is a good setting against the allies.. If the allies have massed fighters (coordinated sweep) it is not a bad thing to have only a few aircraft up in the air. Lighter losses.. However, if the allies dedicate 12 squadrons to the sweep you usually get around 15 moments where a single squadron or flight engages the active CAP.. More defenders are scrambled over time, resulting (I think) in lower fatigue for the pilots and a more even response to incoming sweeps..

This is purely based on observation though.. no notes, haven't done bean counting...

Well, the resupply of India went sour.. All xAKs involved are sunk by 150+ 2E torpedo and attack bombers. I had 350 fighters covering Calcutta and 100 the taskforce involved.. Nothing from Calcutta leaked to help out, which was something I was counting on... Around 80 allied aircraft are splashed, which is not a good trade for me..

I'll linger a turn with my covering force (450 fighters on LRCAP, a lot of them low) to get some payback... Risky, but might be worth it if he gets cocky...

Mundy took the bait.. At least I get something out of this situation... If I add the damage done by destroyers @ Ponape (I never tried destroyer bombardement, looks like Ponape is overstacked....) then around 60 attack bombers are destroyed....

Most of the fleet is refitted with just the Soryu and Mutsu still under repair (+/- two weeks).. Main body is on the move again, fully upgraded and with around 400 A7M fighters... Destination Pacific near my mobile support "column" of AKEs and AOs (defense, standby)

So, the allies move on Truk and I decide to challenge it...

Sometimes you just need a good fight... Even if you know that you can't match the might of the allied main body and that it is bad strategy.... It is a lot of fun to fight! A few observations:

- In 1945 maintaining a IJN fleet in being, an unknown threat just over the horizon is strategically sound, especially when the allies are under pressure to advance and have already suffered high casualties. It is also terribly boring.....
- The allied late 1944 / 1945 fleet is solid with regards to air defense and attack and good enough in surface combat. It is very difficult to penetrate the defenses...
- CVEs are really the worst of the lot on both sides and have very limited use against surface and real carriers. Late war Allied flak is probably better at fending off bomber attacks then an additional 200 fighters.....
- Japanese submarines in the late war are useless (one shot and not the depth to survive retaliation from destroyers). 8 out of 10 engagements end with the submarine dead....
- I intensely dislike reacting carriers if what you need is a unified air umbrella....

Final Result:

Yellow is Japanese Capital loss
Blue is Allied Capital loss (all confirmed)

Not worth it . But I'm still in this fight.. And Truk is still standing since the invasion fleet for now seems to have turned back.... I would say the result can be compared to the battle for the Java Sea (reversed).. Note the large amount of Japanese destroyers lost. I am missing some allied ones on this list, but only a couple...

At least you took out a pair of BBs. They are extremely effective late war in bombardments.

But to be brutally honest, I think you made a mistake fighting like you did here. The key to your victory earlier was that you struck against the CVE fleet wile the Allied CVs were somewhere else. Mundy has a LOT of ground to make up. He's getting better but no one is perfect. We all let our guard down once in a while (I just did in my AAR) so there was bound to be another opportunity where you could have hit CVEs without CVs. Instead, you got impatient and decided to stop Mundy because your probably thought you had some small tactical advantages (I presume).

You are right, ofcourse. I shouldn't have fought. That, together with the dice not rolling my way ensured the loss of my CVEs and some CVs.. It was a strategic and tactical error.

- I didn't have a clear advantage and miscalculated his air power
- We saw reduced sorties and land based CAP (weather?). I had 200 fighters from Truk but almost none of them helped (I used LRCAP and probably should have gone for regular CAP, 3 hexes)
- Allied flak broke up the real attack, Japanese flak cannot achieve the same results...

Truk, for now, is secure. He'll still have a tough time taking it but I won't be able to intervene with the fleet for the next couple of weeks. PT boats, mines and subs is what I'll have to use - in the past turns I've traded around 8 PTs for 3 Fletchers destroyed by a mix of PT, mines and divebomers flying in from the Marianas... If he manages to clear my PTs and is able to invade it will be interesting to see how it works out. 500+ AV behind level 8 forts, 2300 mines and decent CD... That, connected with stacking limits (assuming the first wave can't take the island in one go)... That should hurt...

Mind you - I still have a CV capacity of 800 aircraft.. I'll reorganise it to 400 fighters and 400 strike aircraft (I'll get 400 B7A2 Grace Dive Bombers) and get it ready as soon as I can to counter a move close to where I'll have a lot of LBA available.... I've crunched numbers on his remaining CVEs and I should be able to deal with them if they operate alone (he needs to operate them alone if he wants two attack vectors)

Truk is important - I need it to delay the allies for as long as I can, no matter the cost in aircraft or soldiers (but not ships). Right now I'm looking at the moon - it is getting brighter again, not good for my PTs...

Did you use LRCAP on your CVTF? If so, you should have read the manually more carefully! There is an in-game malus for this. I think you can get around it by covering a SCTF as well but I'm not 100% this won't suffer from the same sort of penalty if the strike is attacking the CVTF.

I knew about that rule... And then I forgot.. Now you made me remember

Anyway, LRCAP a surface TF works pretty well. With hindsight, I should have moved the escort carriers on the Truk hex itself and then regular CAP the base with 200 fighters... That would probably have been a better idea.. Or just retreat and bait his strikes with a destroyer TF

When it comes to a big battle like this, I've always believed the best strategy is to wait for the enemy to attack, absorb the blow, then launch a counterattack. It's really easy for one side to make tactical mistakes by burning through planes, torpedoes, or ship ammo without doing enough damage to warrant the use. In this case, putting a destroyer squadron under heavy CAP would have been a decent way to get the Allies to lose planes and use up torpedoes without putting your main fleet at risk. But honestly, Truk was a very bad place to use this strategy. You should have waited to battle in a place with interlocking airfields. The best option IMO is to use CAP to against air strikes against airfields or troops because you don't have to risk ships. In a place like the Marianas or DEI the Allies need their CVs to stay forward for some time to support ground troops. And big invasions require xAPs which take many days to fully unload. Absorb the air strikes and bombardments and jump in after Mundy makes a mistake.

Well, at some point he will have to attack the Marianas so I'll get my chance at a bit of payback...

Hopefully he will be offshore for several more days taking this pounding from your CDs. Truk does look to be a goner but each day means he receives more abuse to units and vessels he will need later.

Don't get too happy. Most of the Allied losses are of things that are either replaceable or not very important by late war. The surface ship are banged up but they'll survive. The only losses I would be concerned with are those AKAs.

Sangeli, he'll have a lot of battleships in the yards for a while... It is almost april 1945.. It is an OK result, not to mention that I have traded the troops at Truk for around 300 vehicles and 1.5 of divisions worth of troops (intel indicates around 1800 squads and vehicles destroyed)... And he hasn't dropped the forts yet (and is massively overstacked) so it might get a bit worse before it gets better for him....

This might concern him a bit... Mundy has the two carrier groups covering the operation but his cover is not perfect and I managed to sneak in a fast battleship detachment... (bit risky but with a bit of luck I managed to avoid being detected entirely....)

This turn they catch up with the retreating allies lacking any kind of decent surface support (expending all ammo on the island). Over 200 fighters are on CAP duty from the operational airfield...

He pulled his support TFs out of dodge too quickly and now he is losing troop ships he can't afford to lose. His odds went from 1-2 to 1-4 this turn and since he has been unable to lower the forts, still 8 he will have to wait until supplies are exhausted for the Japanese and rest his disrupted troops.

I've been able to reinforce with most of a brigade by air (taking pretty heavy losses in transports...). My AV is back up to 300... If he stays sloppy I might be able to move in a FT taskforce carrying more fresh infantry....

He is also heavily overstacked so burning through supply fast.. That might force him to run the CD gauntlett

The 49th Brigade is now defending Truk in strength... The original garrison is pretty beat up and trying to recover some losses. AV is around 330 (original 500) against 1900 allied (original 3100)... The allied losses are severe and they are still overstacked in a big way.

Both large carrier TFs are now circling Truk with at least one strike on the ground troops in the AM phase..

The allies effectively bombard Truk using CAs, CBs and BBs... The airfield (I just flew in around 150 fighters, bad timing) takes a pounding and 50+ aircraft are destroyed and another 50 left behind in the retreat...

For some reason Mundy lands two baseforce groups (mistake?) and that only adds to the stacking limit... Another allied assault is beaten back. Around 2500 allied squads and vehicles are now destroyed.... Perfect defensive circumstances for the ground troops...

It's relatively low total casualties but lots of destroyed squads and vehicles. Has it been a measurable amount for your VPs? It's kind of crazy to be fighting like this over Truk in the spring of '45, what a luxury even if it's cost you some CVs. Do you have research allocated for the late war Wonderwaffe stuff?

The blue marked rows show the VP count from moment of troops landing (1201). At 1 VP per 3 squads destroyed for western allies my estimate is that I've destroyed around 2600 "devices"

How many VPs are you accounting for China?

It's almost certainly the infantry regiments and battalions that are the cause of many destroyed squads. They get chewed up in heavy battles even worse than marine defense battalions. I have since stopped bringing units smaller than a brigade to such battles unless it doesn't put me over the stacking limit.

And I think everyone is really curious what KS can do late war. But slowing down the Soviets enough may be too much even for him...

It is not just the small units although those are the most vulnerable (so high casualties from those units in the first two attacks).. Mundy kept attacking trying to defeat my tiring troops.. He probably did so with divisions with a high ratio of disabled squads.. That in combination with high fort levels translates into extra ordinary attacker casualties

I am sure of this since fresh brigades I moved in took disablements but almost no destroyed squads.. The units I had at Truk took heavy casualties in destroyed squads since they already had high disablement..

If you simplify it, it might work like this: Unit selection -> Fire on devices (prioritise healthy squads).
