So, now what... Lets say I do not run into submarines on my way back towards replenishment. My airgroups are shredded but pilot wise the losses are acceptable and I have enough replacements trained and ready. Nine fast fleet carriers (aircraft capacity 600 aircraft) will be available for operations within two weeks, along with most of the battleships, cruisers and destroyers... Mundy will have at best a few CVEs, perhaps an Essex class or two and a few CVLs with whatever he can gather surface wise. I think he will be out of the fight for at least a few months! And this is May 1943!

That is a decisive Japanese victory if I ever saw one. It will be mid-late 44 before he can challenge you in a CV fight again. Talking on the KB with only the early CVEs + 3 CVs is a very bad idea.

Well played despite some bad luck initially with the SCTF getting in among parts of the KB.

Thanks Joc. The situation is very good and next time I meet his carriers it will be near a Japanese base... The losses I took from surface action were scary but at the same time it was crystal clear to me that this was to good a chance to let myself be scared of... One note for Japanese players: I had huge trouble going up against the F6F.. The A6M5s got shredded and that was with over 50% of 80+ experience and skill pilots.........

Escort and CAP... On CAP the losses are lighter ofcourse but the F6Fs are hard to shoot down.... In carrier vs carrier battle sweep is not all that important to me...

Here a good example of the relative performance, about a dozen A6M5s lost for a handful Hellcats on escort duty.. Ofcourse there are so many zeroes they get through to the bombers but imagine going up against 6 fleet carriers with over a hundred escorts.....:

Afternoon Air attack on TF, near Auckland at 123,185

Weather in hex: Severe storms

Raid detected at 40 NM, estimated altitude 11,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 15 minutes

Japanese aircraft
A6M5 Zero x 117

Allied aircraft
F4F-4 Wildcat x 17
F6F-3 Hellcat x 54
SBD-3 Dauntless x 47
TBF-1 Avenger x 25

Japanese aircraft losses
A6M5 Zero: 4 destroyed

Allied aircraft losses
F4F-4 Wildcat: 1 destroyed
F6F-3 Hellcat: 1 destroyed
SBD-3 Dauntless: 12 destroyed, 18 damaged
TBF-1 Avenger: 10 destroyed, 2 damaged
TBF-1 Avenger: 1 destroyed by flak

Well played taking advantage of your opportunities to punish your opponent. This is starting to look a lot like whack-a-Mundy.

Thanks guys...

So far the retreat is without incident on the IJN side. CL Cleveland took three torpedoes (strange amount for a undamaged CL) and I think she sank right after... Sinking modern cruisers is Always good! Allied heavy bombers are lashing out in anger but no real serious damage other then a dozen or so damaged ships at Rabaul. We upped the CAP there but Mundy will probably stay away for a while...

Production of A6M5 is turned on again since the 200 frames in the pool will get sucked into duty. We strip the training squadrons of sufficiently trained recuits to increase the pools a bit..

May 31st.... All previously engaged ships have returned safely to port. I carpeted the transit area with search aircraft and routed around submarines.. All I need is some time repair ships and aircraft, fill the bunkers and replenish forward depots.

Current carrier air situation:

About a hundred aircraft are aboard ships in need of large repairs. They are on the way to a repair yard, leaving around 700 aircraft available for operations. I am forced to use B5N1 Kates on one of the decks but by now about half of my bombers are B6N2s with 3 being produced each day. I might expand to 4...

D-Day will be June 15th.. Around 60 fighters are protecting Brisbane. Bombardement and KB should be able to remove the direct threat only leaving LRCAP..

Damage is not to bad and this is actually very close to the HI (some damaged CVLs and CVEs are going to get repaired and upgraded. I can achieve superiority without these hulls for now)...

And then, more important news:

Ground combat at Suva (132,160)

Japanese Deliberate attack

Attacking force 33204 troops, 323 guns, 494 vehicles, Assault Value = 1102

Defending force 30075 troops, 479 guns, 287 vehicles, Assault Value = 273

Japanese adjusted assault: 781

Allied adjusted defense: 317

Japanese assault odds: 2 to 1 (fort level 0)

Japanese forces CAPTURE Suva !!!

12th Marine Defense Battalion
7th Port Advn Base Force
216th Coast AA Regiment
198th Coast AA Regiment
2nd Marine Defense Battalion
1st Fiji Commando Battalion
Nandi Base Force

This releases an infantry corps HQ, two infantry divisions and a tank division for new missions...

New Zealand is still on the agenda but the land based air might be something to take into account. I won't be able to suppress all bases in range of potential invasion spots...

About a 1000 so that is 3000 US and New Zealand squads destroyed. Most of the support was US, most of the combat was NZ...

4 days behind schedule 1943-06-19 (after KB shrugged of a torpedo strike on the 18th, claiming 50 allied aircraft for 2 A6M5s), Brisbane is struck.... The ship count is reduced to about 80 but the damage is still very decent....

Looks like the runway is trashed, no build up airbases nearby to supply LRCAP and low FLAK...

This means KB will strike the port again tomorrow. The Nells will shift to Heavy Industry (about 50 in Brisbane)

I wonder though at what stage does your opponent begin to learn from his mistakes?

That collection of ships shouldn't be anywhere near the front line.

And with no or little AA?

I mean, great strike, but what is he playing at?

I have to echo Jocke...Wow.

If your opponent keeps offering up the opportunities, why not keep smacking him hard. I really don't understand why he's stacking his coastal bases with aircraft when he can't protect them against naval bombardments, or in this case a left and right combo. The referee should step in and stop the beating .

Well played all around.

Yes, that is what I am wondering about as well.... Sometimes I think he feels that just because it is mid 1943 he should win encounters like this.... Ofcourse I would never strike against a port without checking out the defense in detail (recon)...

And with his fleet in shambles there is no reason for me to back away now.... 2nd day strike is imminent...

I´ve tried to give him some advice in his AAR. But he isn´t listening... its like he suffers from victory decease...but without the victories.

It is lost game syndrome. I saw it in the game I picked up; the player has lost, knows he has lost, is getting pummeled right left and center but soldiers on. But the player skips or glosses over whole areas of the game and focuses on one or two narrow items/areas and lets everything else fall apart. The player has mentally written them off, and the turn needs to be flipped.

That, or he has become accustomed to pounding his head against a wall.

You've been consistently able to lure him into fights that are not in his favor and he obliges, from day 1. He's not expecting you to continue to press the attacks into 43, so he continues to stay forward in multiple areas. I believe he is consistently overestimating his own strength and underestimating yours. Plus, you know the game mechanics much better than he does.

From my perspective, it's easy to "lose" control of this game. So many details to track. Getting AA, fighters, bases built up, leaders, etc...managing invasions...heck even carrier combat is a challenge with all the bit and pieces involved. I think he "lost" control and didn't think of things like building up Brisbane, etc...

At this point, I'd offer him a surrender. You've removed his carrier fleet from the equation until late 43/early 44. You've just eliminated a chunk of his troop transports and tankers. You have so many victory points, it's doubtful he can even remotely achieve a 2-1 victory. Doubtful he can achieve a 1-1 in victory points.

I think he's afraid to lose face right now.

And let's not forget "experience" with this game. Experienced players know approx. where all the defenders are at start, have almost perfect intel, know where to hit and what to hit with because they've played the game forever. Mundy doesn't have that level of experience and it's showing. I think he wants to play a "historical" aggressive allied approach, but it can't work against someone as experienced as Cannonfodder. I don't have even remotely this level of experience and it's showing in my game.

Weather in the PM phase disturbed my planning... No strike... We'll try again next turn with the airfield damage reported 97 and 57 ships still in port...

You might be right Vicberg although I don't think Mundy wants to give up.. Perhaps he is using the game as a learning session now? Not sure... I can try to reach out and offer him a way out... He should know that that door is always open. I'm not one to keep people in games they don't enjoy...

You blew the game engine with all those sunk ships. It's not equipped to handle it. Possibly some type of built in limit. Not expecting 180 sunk ships in 3 days.

This is getting just painful to watch.

I don't think it's lost game syndrome. I believe he has been simply overwhelmed by both the game (itself) and speed of the attack. He's mentioned his prior opponents being "conservative". He's just not prepared for this. He's been on his heels from day 1 and as he tries to deal with one situation, another develops that he isn't prepared for.

This game takes years to "master" and I don't think there are many on this site who would consider themselves masters. Building up Brisbane, surrounding fields, AA, etc., is second nature if you've played this game for years. Probably would have been done from day 1 for experienced players. If you haven't, it takes a lot of effort and a lot of thought and a lot of time and a lotta lotta.

Ya, Mundy is just learning this very complicated game. And learning the hard way. And sometimes learning the same lesson multiple times. Viceberg is right on the money. In many ways this game has gone beyond him. I've had opponents like this in the past.

But at the same time he's not giving up. And I have to say I do admire Mundy's determination if nothing else. And in this game it counts for something given what the Allies get late. If he can take the punishment now he can take it in the future. At this point things really will start getting easier as the Allies. This is an excellent opportunity for a game that can go very very deep. I can totally see CF lasting until even 1946. CF has the opportunity to get things that few players have ever gotten like jet fighters. As long as Mundy doesn't give up this game can go on until the final turn. If Mundy is willing, why stop?
