- AO Tappahanock sunk by damned I-26 near Christmas island... This was a good, fast AO
I think I will withdraw all fast AOs to "off map". Maybe I will keep em busy moving fuel from the East coast to Cape Town... The point is, I only have 6 fast AOs (5 Cimarron, 1 Kennebec) and no reinforcements until June 1943. The slower AOs (11knots cruise) can take over until 43

- A submarine minefield set near Rabaul (hex 107,126) was discovered and it is now being cleaned by Japanese DMS. AFAIK it didn't yield any damage.... next time

- I sent 2E bombers to Tezpur, this to help the expected ground combat.. once again, escorts didn't fly. I lost three Blenheims IV and one B-25C to Zero's LRCAP

- Paras captured Tezpur, but the enemy (9th RF Gun Battalion) is still at Tezpur, hence I still can't rail the "hordes" waiting at Raipur/ Calcutta. Hopefully next turn

- Dacca captured, 86th Naval guard + base forces were not up to the task. 254th Armoured Brigade easily kicked them out.. I already rebased some Hurricanes and tomorrow the C-47s will bring an Air HQ.

- I-29 got 2 direct hits from DD Griffin. Then Dauntless bombers hit them twice

- Paras evicted 9th RF Gun battalion out of Tezpur. This means that the Indian "hordes" will now keep moving by rail. Once they reach Tezpur they will march to Silchar, as this base is too well defended to attempt a para drop

- Sweeped and bombed Comilla airfield. but he already evacuated it... tomorrow I will try ground bombing to kill the retreating troops. Meanwhile, P-38s will sweep Imphal (L3)

I don't know if it it just good luck, but I am seeing much better ASW results.. it might be related to upgrades or even to Allied devices getting better after certain dates. In any case, I plan to start "West coast - Pearl Harbor" ASW CVE patrols in around 30 days. This is when CVE Nassau arrives (followed by Prince William and Altamaha, 8 and 12 days after respectively).
I could start it now if I wanted as I have CVEs Copahee and Long Island at SanFran doing nothing. Problem is lack of squadrons, I think the few squadrons available are better used on training. This will change of course with the arrival of 4 new replacement squadrons with Nassau, Prince William and Altamaha.
I also started training (late I would say) one 18 dive bombers Marine squadron in ASW... this squadron will be re-based in the small (16 plane) Long Island.

And I don't think I will end fighting in Comilla/ Chittagong... Only the tanks can reach it before he leaves, and tanks cannot assault a well garrisoned, entrenched position. We will see what can be trapped. I would say anything east of Comilla has a good chance of being destroyed.

Status: offline 		Today PTs really shined, no they didn't sink anything, but they thwarted all Japanese attempts to bomb Calcutta airbases.. a great, if costly victory --> 10 PTs lost...

There were several engagements, with PTs obliterated in almost each one. Allied aim was not good, so there were no Japanese losses.

There are several other news, but one at a time :)

- DMS W-1 torpedoed by S-31, most likely sunk

- Both P-40K and A6M3 had their baptism of fire... P-40K did well
I was not expecting him doing heavy sweeps on Calcutta.. I didn't see the naval bombing coming, even thought I had naval search. Going back on topic, there were simply too many Zeros and Tojos against few P-40K.
Only one P-40K lost.

- P-38s sweeps on Imphal did not find any CAP, while B-17s scored 4 Tojos and 2 Helens on the ground

- Comilla bombing was uneventful, CAP failed to destroy any bomber, but they certainly reduced the bombers aim, as the results were mediocre.

I will need to get ready. I was actually in the process of building a defense arrangements on Calcutta.. the PT boats were just one component of it. the full plan was:

- PT boats guarding Calcutta: this thwarted the bombing, but at a high cost

- Coastal batteries at Diamond Harbor: naval guns were supposed hinder movement from Diamond Harbor to Calcutta.. but didn't work at all. All 3 coastal gun LCUs are now packing to move on to Calcutta

- mines at Diamond Harbor: this will take a long to achieve, but I have 2 ACMs near Colombo, they are traveling to Madras and then to Calcutta. I also have one CM at Madras, but pools are very low.. this means that I will need to use USN submarines to do most of the mining. I decided I will not mine Diamond Harbor, as the guns did nothing... will just mine Calcutta directly.

- Torpedo/ dive bombers at Cuttack: This base is critical because it is not on shore. Thus I can put several torpedo bombers and Barracudas to guard the approached to Calcutta. Last turn they were not active because the airbase is still under repair.




Hopefully next time results will be better

That surprises me too - thought coastal batteries would have interdicted that passage? Mines should.

Good to see the P-40k do well at over 20k - a bit surprised too.

Guess the PTs were limited by sufficient moonlight and calm seas. Did you have good PT Boat skippers?

Status: offline 		I had each TF with the best commander I was able to find. all other skippers were just whatever, randomly defined by the AI I guess

My entire defense plan on guns/ mines was about Diamond harbor being capable of interdicting... I don't know if this was just pure bad luck, but he was not hindered at all by coastal guns.. maybe the caliber was not big enough for long distance shooting?

From past experiences I know they are not great against naval bombing, but at least they will shoot from time to time... maybe it is related to low caliber? all guns at Diamond are 6 inches Mk V/ VII.
Maybe you need battleship caliber guns to interdict?

unless of course somehow they are not passing through Diamond???
If you look at this picture... why is my TF's planning to move from hex 51, 38 (west of Diamond) to hex 51,37 (north west of Diamond) ??
you can see the red line between the two hexes. is it possible that maybe it is not working as designed?

What map are you using??

For a TF passing through at night you need radar to detect it. If DH has no radar he slipped by in the dark.
Mines are laid first near the shore where they will only affect landings. You need over 200 mines before you get out far enough to tangle with bombardment TFs, which rarely approach closer than 6000 yards (even if their stand-off setting is 0). That is just my observations - not developer info or scientifically tested.

there were no mines at Diamond, and I agree I will need at least 200, I am planning to lay 300 (I have two ACMs on the way)... and I know it will take me a long time to reach that level with the poor mining and low pools available.

As per radar... yes. there was a radar in Diamond Harbor:
No 1. Mk 1 (GL1)
This is now moving to Calcutta... as I want as much naval support I can get there for potential TF rearming

EDIT: This No1 Mk1 GL1 radar is garbage, this according to both wikipedia and the editor (60 range, 30 accuracy). I guess I will try again with a SCR-270 before I moved the guns to Calcutta

if so, hats off to the developers to even think about these kind of things

To answer my own question:

4.2.1.2 HEXSIDES
Hexsides are used to represent certain types of linear or “barrier” terrain types, such as coral
reefs and rivers. The hexside types used are as follows:
»» Coral Reef: Hexsides that represent areas of built up coral that hinder
naval movement. Coral Reef hexsides are impassable to all land and
naval units except for ships that have a tonnage of 100 tons or less.

New player question: your CAP against the sweeps was excellent, and I don't understand how your outnumbered Warhawks did so well against the Zeros and Tojos? I am at an earlier point in my game -- May 1942 -- and I still have the P40E, which routinely gets wiped out by Zeros and Tojos even when my planes outnumber theirs by a wide margin. Is the K a lot better than the E version?

The K version has an upgraded engine... which translates into better speed, and speed is key
P-40K is faster than both A6M2 and A6M3.. these were the two main enemies yesterday.

Pilot quality was good, there was nothing particularly good about the mission setting. As you can see they were at 10K vs sweeps at 20K. They were not even doing CAP. Instead they were supposed to escort bombers to Comilla.. they probably reacted to their base being attacked... Also important to mention, I ended with 10 damaged planes, so I am sure there was luck involved.

When doing CAP, try setting range to zero as this sometimes help too. Check the commander air skill... and be ready to spend a lot of PP points in changing the horde of incompetents you get by default.
If you are in May 1942.. you should already have access to P-38s... use them with your best pilots

Regarding the carriers... I think I have a window of opportunity of a few turns before they come into play. It is now or never, as they would eventually be discovered.
Also, I am willing to risk them because naval losses had been minimal in the last few months

Status: offline 		Saw a documentary on TV about "the engine that won the war". The early P-40s were powered by the Allison engine which did not perform well at altitude nor during high stress maneuvers. Eventually it was replaced with .... the Rolls Royce Merlin engine - same one that made the Spitfire a legend.

The US was licensed to manufacture it and improved it with a cast aluminum block that was lighter than the British design, and started adding turbochargers and other refinements that really upped the performance. It was so good it was used in the P-51 after the original engine on that aircraft proved disappointing.

Not sure if the USN used the Merlin engine - Ernie King didn't like anything British, except the loan of their aircraft carriers when the US ones were all in repair and refit.

Status: offline 		As I anticipated, cruisers at Chittagong were a complete surprise for the Japanese.

What I didn't anticipate was that the many fighters set to sweep (from multiple bases) will not fly, while the bombers at Benares would... in short this was a bloodbath.

But lets start with the good news:
- Somersville cruisers found a 3-destroyer TF, likely on ASW mission. DDs Hasu and Yugiri sunk, DD Hatakaze run away

- Then they found a 3 xAKL "fuel bandidos" trying to steal some of my diesel.. that's low 3 xAKL down!

- The cruisers even managed to bombard Chittagong, although it is important to mention this happened after the air battles.

Status: offline 		Before we moved on to the bad news... another carrier sighting status:
B5N2 Kate attacking a Electric Boat S-18 class SS at 43,65

this was on the PM phase, and is near Pt Blair... carriers are one day away at full speed, two days at cruise

OK now the bad news. I planned to close Chittagong, with naval bombing, followed by several sweeps, followed by all my available bombers. Things didn't work at all.

- No fighter sweeps. I had it from 3 bases, but no one fly, AM or PM

- B-17s from Benares did fly.. I am actually surprised how well they did against so many Tojos and Zeros

- B-25Cs and Wellingtons also fly: they were torn to pieces.. specially the Wellingtons



- Last but not least, the tanks NW of Benares were supposed to massacre what was supposed to be a small LCU, but recently arrived 5th IJA division spoiled the fun


For next turn I will repeat the bombings of Chittangong, I know this will mean casualties, more so considering their AA defense was particularly good. But I don't want to leave a job half done... The base needs to be closed and there are many damaged planes to destroy.. so one more shot, then I will let them rest or attack lightly defended targets

I setup a little Maskirovska at Calcutta, since I don't have any PT left, I created MGBs at Diamond Harbor and send them to Calcutta...

I guess from the air they all look like PT boats., Prester John's comment: "PT's seem to have grown"

Since you only got 13 runway hits from your full bomber strike, I am sure you will get 0 from the immediate follow on strike - even if sweeps fly first. He just has too much opposing you. You might even find KB fighters on LRCAP.

You are right with regards to Benares bombers... yesterday only Benares flew.. today hopefully all other bases will: Calcutta, Hyderabad, Jamshedpur, Cuttack
thus I hope Benares is not again doing all the heavy lifting..

Status: offline 		Bombing of Chittagong was successful. Prester John withdrew his fighters and I was lucky I got "clear" weather:
Naval bombardment did nothing, and this was expected as ammo was very low. still good news that the cruisers were able to withdraw to Calcutta uneventful. They disbanded and will hopefully repair and rearm soon. Eastern Fleet's 300 naval support are in transit to Calcutta, shouls take them a few days to arrive as they recently disembarked in Cochin

(FOW) Air Results were good. Chittagong won't be bombed again, as BBFanboy mentioned, there is a KB risk. Benares bombers will likely rest, the others will shift to different targets, likely inland to avoid any KB LRCAP trap



Also in the news:
SS KXV torpedoed AK Yamasimo Maru... a navalized cargo ship carrying troops... I don't know if it was moving in or out of the theatre.

I agree it was a lot of armor, and I was very afraid of unleashing it.

At the end I decided to go for the following reasons:
- Clear terrain
- I knew there were no forts as the 5th infantry just arrived
- 2E bombing missions would be launched to increase disruption
- last but not least, I have several units that will become irrelevant very soon. As you can see from the picture, I have many "restricted" units that can't cross into Burma. Their "mission accomplished" banner will be raised as soon as they reach Cox's Bazaar



unrestricted 7th Armored brigade will leave out of theatre in 192 days... strong candidate for leading the shock attack
