No turn yet, just combat replay:
Magwe won't look pretty tonight

- Today (which is the 3rd round) there was minimal CAP, composed of Oscars and Ruffes I wonder where did the good planes went
He probably decided Magwe is game over and withdrew them

- Damage to oil looks severe, several waves of bombing, at least 3 were massive (1st one is pictured in this post)
Oil hits: 398 + 73 + 29 + 10 + 13 + 13 + 4 + 13 + 8 + 20 + 9 + 2 + 9 + 12 + 15 + 9 = 636 hits

Nah, he simply doesn't have the fighter reserves. Defending Magwe takes hundreds of fighters and he was caught unprepared. Either in squadrons there and in pool fighters, perhaps both.

Nicks can be ok in defense for the first wave, you just have to have other planes there protecting them and realize their climb isn't great.

I think he was unprepared in squadron #s, his pools should be fine, his losses are relatively light

Today he mentioned: "3 days to completley level Magwe, through just about my entire airforce and most of my AA in the region!"

But a key point is that I have more than 1,000 bombers in Calcutta: all non restricted 4E, all British, most USA 2Es. Magwe was going to be closed, there is no doubt about it... it is the how quickly, how easily, how little losses what is probably bothering him. Thus I emailed him your previous post as there is good advice in there

The CAP trap I setup at Cox's Bazaar worked wonderful

As you can see from the picture, I sent a TF to Cox Bazaar. I am having trouble moving supply from Calcutta to the front, maybe a matter of the extensive number of divisions I have down there

Anyway, a couple turns ago, I decided to stop bombing Magwe, as it had become a bloody affair for very small benefits. As of now, oil is at 4(297) and it is no longer cost efficient to continue,
at this same time he decided to counter strike, with naval bombing, sweeps and airfield strikes at Chittagong.

So long story short, I decided to send a supply TF to Cox's Bazaar instead of the more ideal alternative of Chittagong.
I also put several Dacca fighters squadrons on on LRCAP above Cox's Bazaar. And I also reinforced Chittagong airbase: I took out all P-38s, and replaced with the more abundant Hurricanes, this, of course, to avoid naval bombardment losses.

Results were great: while his sweeps focused on Chittagong, two completely unescorted waves of IJN bombers (Nells and Vals) got wipped out on Cox Bazaar

Very nicely done over Cox and Magwe!!! Kinda jealous seeing the airpower you're able to put up! Seems you really maxed out the India theater with the heavies - not much left for Oz? Maybe I need to rethink my priorities.....

Wow! Great air combat results -- even creamed the Tojos! Great work! What would be the most likely mission for the IJN force -- bombardment?

He will bomb Chittagong, he already did a few turns ago, but it was not too damaging,

I will likely moved out the planes in a turn or two, I also moved out, permanently, the P-38s... it is one thing to lose Hurricanes or P-40s, another very different to lose P-38s/ 4E bombers

By now he also has figured out that I have all my air power in India. Or better to say:
- All non restricted 4E bombers. And I bought all available
- All P-38s, one P-40K squadron
- Most USAAF 2E bombers
- Almost all British squadrons, I think I have one in Australia
- 2 Canadian Fighter squadrons (50 Hurricanes)
- Other minor squadrons (Dutch, NZs)

so what is in the Pacific/ Oz?
- Navy and Marines squadrons
- All Australia, most NZ squadrons
- Significant number of USAAF fighters, but using relatively outdated P-40Es and P-39s
- Some USAAF 2E bombers.
Just enough to do some credible defense if his objectives are limited, certainly not enough to go offensive. Not yet

I guess a question he should also be asking himself is: what next? there has been no Japanese offensives in a long time, at least 6 months if not more. Is he happy on giving up initiative? in the meantime, I have recaptured: Ceylon, India, Bangladesh. Had he pushed hard in Australia or the Pacific, I would had been in a difficult spot, as the main forces were tied to India. It is now November, so I don't know if it is too late for Japan to keep going offensively.... AARs will say no...

I am still undecided if I should move out some of the forces out of India. With Magwe almost out of oil, I am happy with keeping the frontier at Burma, it is really difficult terrain, and I am actually having significant issues in keeping Cox's Bazaar supplied, which is very close and with a road to my Chittagong depot.. so just imagine the pains that it will be to keep pushing down in Burma.

Classic tar-baby in India - he wants to get out of the sticky situation but can't, and it inevitably draws in more and more of his forces to try to save the ones that are there.
You did a great job of anticipating where to resist. Bravo Zulu!

I knew this was not going to end well for the bait force...
The IJN cruisers got the amphibious force before the British cruisers could do anything

To be continued...

It didn't start well, either.

Best case, maybe the IJN ships will be low on ammo when/if (??) they run into some serious Allied warships. But yeah, this fight looks ugly.

Three night battles:
the 1st was a massacre, the Japanese TF reached Cox Bazaar and wipped out the bait TF before the SCTF could react
2nd battle: finally the British cruisers showed up... battle ended undecided
3rd battle: one IJN destroyer sunk, the rest left with minimal damage... November 42, the night still belongs to Japan

Allied losses:
Sunk: DE Talbot, AMC Hector, 3 "good" xAPs (2 Poelau, 1 Tasman class), 2 small xAKs (Transmarine class), 4 coastal xAPs (Straits)
Light damage: CA Hawkins, DDs Hotspurs, Isis --> yard time, but not at risk of sinking

Japan losses:
Sunk: DD Azakaze
Hvy Damaged: CL Kuma, DD Isonami

Not as bad as I originally thought. I will try to get Kuma next turn, it can't be too far away. If I manage to sink it, then I can consider this a victory
Problem is, the Japanese vanished, and there is a much bigger fleet in Pt Blair

EDIT (Nov 4th): Nah, I didn't catch anything

One of the worst plays I have made so far

Remember I said I sent cruisers to pursue Kuma?
well they found (other) Japanese cruisers

It was horrible to watch; but we will recover, losses are not crippling. CL Caradoc and Capetown were 2nd rate at most, APDs a bit more helpful, but I am in November 42, I will soon start to get real AMPH assets

Still will need some time to diggest it...

By the way I'm on vacations for the next few weeks. I doubt I will be sending back the turn until much later... so don't think I have abandoned the game after this defeat

That looks like a recipe for disaster...

With all the fleet action taking place on the coast he is bound to have loads of Betty/Nells on Naval attack.

But I am 7 hexes from Pt Blair... and DL is zero... where is his nav search?

EDIT: but you are right... too risky... I still want to tempt a carrier action, but I have changed heading to North East...

Finally got the turn, moving out was the right thing to do, as I saw all the Japanese fleet on Pt Blair.. It would had been a fight under the worst possible circumstances
thanks Jocmeister for the advice

What else? TFs were spotted, so he is probably preparing a LBA party... time to withdraw... at least he is aware I am no longer in fear of his naval power

Absolutely not.

Your only friends in China are forts and terrain. Attacking will take away the forts and give him the terrain. And that is without even mentioning the (-) supply....

Yes, although China is doomed, I am happy he will have to spend lots of supply on defeating it

Japan does appear to have lost 4/5ths of its squads to disablement. I think I might have actually ordered a counterattack there because on paper Japan should have had far fewer AV the next turn.

I still have the turn... after a year of fighting, we have both become lazy and rusty

I agree with JocMeister, but because I have really nothing to lose, other than maybe a few more weeks of Chungking ownership. I just set a shock attack
And actually the more Chinese LCUs destroyed the better, because they will then come back at 1/3 strengh in a few weeks

it will be fun to watch regardless of how it ends.
