Should be very interesting to watch the outcome.

How big are your runways at Ledo?

Ledo is at 3.73 level airfield

I liberated it a month or so ago, I will see if I can send some additional engineer LCUs to speed up its building.
My priority was Chittagong as I was expecting a heavy fighting over Magwe that thanksfully was not needed

I agree with JocMeister, but because I have really nothing to lose, other than maybe a few more weeks of Chungking ownership. I just set a shock attack

Woo hoo. I was hoping you would, but I didn't feel I had the investment in your AAR to make the recommendation. Good luck.

I'm too lazy to do the math, but what will be the supply cost to the Japanese if you are successful in destroying numerous squads compared to just absorbing multiple attacks? Also, how much time will it buy you as the Japanese will have to withdraw to well supplied bases in order to rebuild any losses they suffer?

I would be flying in as much supplies as I could, even diverting heavy bombers to that duty. I would be looking to max Ledo out, asap.

Why? Supplies is what China needs, and supplies sent to Chungking are going to hurt the Japanese. Chungking is fairly hard to stop transports to, and is a huge VP gain for Japan as well as on the tactical side it frees up large amounts of troops.

Of course, if you haven't prepared for it with trained pilots, big airbases, plentiful supply and aviation support, you probably have two months before Chungking can fall depending upon the results of this shock attack.

The problem is I cannot undo now the cummulative effects of an India invasion early on (thanksfully already taken care of) plus my total inneptitude and lack of interest in the Chinese theater.

We are playing DBB-C with extended map and overstack penalty. I originally thought that the overstack was going to help me in China, instead each Chinese defeat/ withdrawal would invariably meant that more and more troops got inside an overstacked base, with supply consumption going up at alarming rates. I think a good land player that carefully played China could had done a much better job. I didn't, I always hated the few minutes I devoted to China on every turn, and yes it was always minutes, the turn could take me 5 hours, but I still always devoted just a few minuted to China.

So from early 42 until a few months ago most of India was in Japanese hands. So for at least 6 months there was no supply at all coming to China. Ledo was only recently started to get built. Also important to mention that up to recently my air transport focus was on moving supply from Calcutta to Bangladesh.

So I will certainly start "the hump" very soon, most likely once Ledo reaches level 4. Most of the planes are already in Calcutta training, so it can start quickly.

That being said, I am not too confident on turning the tide here

more horror...

Chungking is completely surrounded, so no supply will come in or out

unless my shock attack succeeds

With so little supply at Chungking, can you even make an attack there? I would worry that an attack, if ordered, will turn into a half-hearted affair with only a few units actually attacking, you burn up all your supply and accomplish little or nothing against the enemy even if they already have massive disruption.

Here's to hoping against hope that it will be better than that.

Supply is already burnt, I am actually surprised it is at 420, before it was much less, probably just a matter of less mouths to feed after yesterdays' slaughter

Once you are significantly overstacked, trying to save supply is impossible, it will just get burned at horrible rates. That is the case with Chungking. It doesn't help that every destroyed LCU comes to this base.

So launching the attack will not make a huge difference, I am hoping lots of Chinese LCUs will be destroyed so they will come back a little fresher in 3 weeks.
I believe assault will go at 25% efficiency... but 25% of a big mob is still a force to recon. We will see how bad this ends

Overstack Chungking....very tough in this mod given your position.

You can at least try to hold on to Kunming, better than nothing.

I am not sure stacking limits are a good thing or a bad thing in China. Overall, I might lean to good thing if China fully understands them and plans accordingly.

Overstacking penalties add another level of complexity to fighting in China. You need to spread out your troops and even predict the direction of your retreats. otherwise you end in a never ending cycle of supply burn.

in my view, stacking penalties are good overall, I am willing to suffer it in China if it allows me to have it in other more interesting places like India or Australia

Is this even possible realistically? At this time all I can say about retreats is that they will be in whatever is the worst direction available from a tactical point of view. For example, troops in process of moving west to safety, attacked from the east -- and forced to retreat southeast into a trap.

Several players have discussed retreat direction recently and the consensus seems to be that the unit will retreat toward the nearest friendly base, provided there is a clear (not interdicted by enemy troops) supply path to it. Otherwise, it appears to be random.

So ... if I read you right, retreat can, in some cases, be predicted but never controlled. And apparently it's easy, at least in some cases, for the attacking player to herd fleeing units back to a doomed, trapped base. That would explain some of what I've seen in China and, to a lesser extent, Malaya -- admittedly, limited experience and small sample size.

Jorge, sorry for the detour, let's hear what happened with your counterattack!

Never controlled, but you can predict the consequences:
imagine you have a stack of 30,000 troops near base "A" (1 hex away)
Base "A" stacking limits is 25,000 and it is already at max
You have to be very careful with the 30,000 stack because if it is defeated, it will likely move to base "A" and proceed to burn supply at horrible rates.

So you basically need to manage carefully where you have troops, otherwise supply will simply evaporate. This is not so much of an issue in other theatres, but China is already starving

Yes I did that, I need more Chinese units destroyed... I don't like to this, as it is kind of exploiting a (poor) game mechanic, but no other choice really

so another slaughter is coming.... which means a period of extreme vulnerability in the next few weeks, I hope level 6 forts help, because he will most likely withdraw and replace his most disrupted units with fresh troops very soon

Things looking much better in Australia... another supply run will be attempted, most likely all xAKLs will be destroyed, but if I can disembark 6,000 supply and/ or naval bomb Japanese SCTFs, then it would be worthy

Rats, at least the first attack hit the Japanese pretty hard, too, but this one was a complete disaster!

Are your Australian tanks vulnerable to enemy bombers?

They might be, but there is nothing I can do about it... too far away.
But a key mitigant is that N Australia has been, so far, completely secondary for Japan. I doubt there will be strong opposition, at least early on

Condolences on your Chungking fight!

Brutal.

I'll remember NOT to attack if, I mean, when, I'm in a similar position!

This is the big disaster:
Units destroyed 1

Allied ground losses:
26348 casualties reported
Squads: 1564 destroyed, 866 disabled
Non Combat: 375 destroyed, 299 disabled
Engineers: 77 destroyed, 14 disabled
Guns lost 21 (5 destroyed, 16 disabled)
Units destroyed 1

only 5 units destroyed in total... which means I am naked once he recovers or brings fresh troops

Dumb question: can you just disband some of the trashed units that would never recover anyway?

That is a good question

but no, option of disbanding is "greyed out"

Big win at Darwin.
port size is 3, naval support 36... which means I can guarantee that around half load will unload before Japan can react

In other news, I risked the fleet to cover some supply TFs. But I forgot to setup CAP over Chittagong, thanksfully his LBA missed
CVs are at DL=2, cruisers at DL=10

Question now is, will he accept the challenge?
I am happy to fight him as long as we fight close to Calcutta.

All 6,000 supplies succesfully unloaded at Darwin, no reaction at all from Japan

In other Australian news, Nookambah will be attacked.. I will be surprised if there is anything other than token resistance

Supply situation is:
Darwin 11,969
Katherine 4,994
Daly Waters 377
Wyndham 20
