Status: offline 		Apbarog and I are embarking on a new PBEM using DBB-B Scen 28 with extended map and stacking limits. I'm playing as Japan (as usual) while my opponent is making a rare switch and taking up the Allied cause for a change.

We have agreed to a number of HRs, not because we are sticklers for making rules per se, but more to reflect our shared philosophy of the game, and how we see it progressing from an overall consistency point of view. These are listed below for reference (plus I may need to come back here to check from time to time ).

- PPs paid to change theatres (Thai units allowed to cross into Burma, up to level with Toungoo).
- Restriction on early war strat bombing (date to be negotiable as war progresses) .
- No turn 1 multiple CV port strikes or gamey warp invasion, like Mersing, Singkawang, or Ambon.
- no 4e nav atk under 10k except USN PBY or Mavis types.
- no tiny paratroop drops to take empty bases.
- amphibious landings only at bases.
- Allied player won't set off-map task forces at full speed knowing that they don't use any fuel off-map. The number of days to move off-map from A to B was set up assuming a normal speed.
- night bombing is banned at start. Will be revisited later.
- no single ship task forces to make the strike targeting difficult. No using small AK's as pickets. Small task forces out ahead of something important should have a military purpose, be it scouting or ASW.
- PT task forces limited to having 8 PT boats.
- On turn 1, the Japs won't hunt down the US carriers.

Status: offline 		I think the night bombing ban is a mistake, as you will not now, from day 1, allocate enough research on to it, and when those b29s come along the Allies will be several steps ahead of you and you will have lacked some experience in dealing with it and not researched NF heavily enough.

I think you should allow it perhaps in limited numbers...I have seen that in other games. Or restrict it to moonlight percent, or planes.

Of course, it is your game and have fun as you see fit...just don't get sandbagged later.

Status: offline 		Greetings. I'm looking forward to a challenging game. As Walker84 said, I have very limited time playing the Allies. Also, this is my first Beta patch game, and my first game with a mod, so although I am experienced in AE, it is going to be a new experience for me. Stacking limits in particular will be interesting. Walker84 and I both want to "win", but more importantly, I think we want to enjoy the journey. Walker, good luck to you. I will be starting my own thread shortly, and I'll now take my leave from your thread. See you in Tokyo Bay!

Status: offline 		To Lowpe: thanks for your interest and comments. We will certainly think in terms of what type of limit to put on early war night bombing rather than an outright ban and perhaps this can be lifted soon. I will definitely make a point of not stinting on night defences for the mid/late war game.

To Apbarog: I think on the whole, I'd rather meet you in St Louis!

I decided to go in with a PH attack but detached Kaga to beef up the DEI campaign from the start. This probably weakens the raid on Pearl but has other benefits to my overall campaign plan.

So, a decent number of torpedoes find their mark on Battleship Row, on the other hand there is limited air base and port damage, plus Allied aircraft ground losses are light. I'm not minded to hang around for a second attack however, so the KB will be moving off now to support the Wake and Rabaul invasions.


In the Philippines, air attacks were divided between Clark Field and Manila. Reasonable but not overwhelming results were obtained:

Malaya / DEI

Landings took place at Kota Bharu, Singora and Patani. Allied aircraft flew multiple missions but only secured one bomb hit on an AK. Previously, our air forces had successfully raided air bases at Alor Star, Georgetown and Kuantan.

Summary

A mixed sort of opening turn. I have reconfigured a number of invasion task forces and their target locations. Most are still en route, so we will have to see how quickly the first wave targets are gained; also what sort of initial defence Apbarog intends to put up in response.

The intel screen is currently reporting air losses from all sources at 35 Allied vs 27 Japanese. No data on ship losses yet (other than my aborted SSXs). Clearly I'd like to improve on these numbers over the coming turns!

Operational review

Opening the IJN's account for the day, xAKL Montanes blunders at night into a screening force of IJN DDs just south of Davao and is sunk by gunfire in 85% moonlight. Then SS I-124 puts a torpedo into TK Mindanao, south of Busanga. AMs Finch and Whippoorwill are unable to find the sub.

Several Allied CMs are then torpedoed - no doubt on the way to mine likely invasion beaches:

With many invasion TFs still at sea this turn daytime losses on both sides are surprising light , especially as Roger declines to put any CAP in the air over the PI. This allows Clark to be hit again unopposed, bagging a couple of P-35s and an O-47 on the ground plus increasing the AF damage level.

Bad weather die rolls keep other strikes on the ground but HK and Kota Bharu are both hit successfully.

The Kota Bharu and Aparri invasion TFs both land on schedule, and the former falls to the IJA during the day. The airfield is undamaged so a unit of Zeros move in to provide CAP straight away.

Nav search reveals numerous allied TFs dotted around the PI and heading towards all points of the compass. Some appear to be making the dash due east, where a nasty surprise lies in wait...

Betties put torpedoes into xAK Hai Lee and xAK Hanyang at HK and that is about it for the day.


Production account

I have already made a few adjustments on the production side, for example converting the Ida factory into an Oscar factory - going to need plenty of these babies with PDU off. I have also converted the smaller Nate factory to produce Babs which is a pretty good plane to have alongside the Dinah and costs less.

I will devote more planning time to production over the next few turns.

First up, the Big E is spotted near Palmyra at 168,123 by SS I-20

Shame to waste so many torps for no effective hits, but its still useful to know Enterprise's location. Now, is she en route to link up with the other US carriers or are they going to different locations? As in other games, I delayed the Wake invasion due to the risk of Allied air interdiction and it will be interesting to find out whether the Wake F4Fs have been picked up by a carrier or are they still flying CAP on the island?

KB has now begun to steam West in order to support other operations. I thought Roger might sally forth with some SCTFs and so hung around an extra day in the vicinity but nothing materialised. I think I hit several BBs hard at Pearl but its too early to say how bad the damage was. In my experience its rare for more than a couple of BBs to actually sink in AE. Plus, I only used 5 carriers, one of which was set to naval attack which, in hindsight, was not the most effective configuration. Another thing I always do when planning the atttack nowadays is to stop the A6M2s strafing the airfields as flak is more powerfulin DBB with the current beta .


Further to the SW a Jap sub and a fearless Allied AKL duke it out...

And having re-routed my Tarawa force (again as an insurance against Allied CV incursions) ... Japanese forces CAPTURE Nauru Island !!!

The next most immediate objectives will be Wake, Tarawa, Tabiteau, Shortlands, Buin and Rabaul. Landings will take place once the KB is in position to provide cover. The Rabaul mission involves the rerouted Guam TF together with the covering cruiser force. This in itself should be enough to see off any Allied incursions unless a CV decides to poke its nose in. An SNLF unit out of Truk will be sufficient to capture Guam.

Both attacks are irksome but by the afternoon my forces are ashore pretty much intact, and both Laoag and Vigan will fall next turn. There are precious few bombers so maybe he has bought them out already, or they could be hiding at Cebu.

North Borneo / Sarawak

The TF in the centre of the screenshot is my Miri invasion force, supported by the BBs and CAs formerly screening the Malaya invasions. There is some kind of a welcoming committee sitting at Miri, but its unlikely to be more than a couple of DDs and CLs. Plus, there are a whole host of ships fleeing Manila to the East of my location. I may just have to re-route the Miri invasion temporarily and let my SCTFs loose among the chickens The good news is that, with Force Z taking a couple of torps the other day, its unlikely that any Allied capital ships will interfere at this stage.

IJN subs also hit several small APs and AKLs in the waters around Borneo. However, by and large, our SCTFs fail to connect with Allied shipping during the daytime. Much of this shipping is being funnelling via Jolo as the screenshot shows. I had to make a decision with the Boise still at large and chose to use surface assets to support the impending landings at Cagayan and Davao as the main priority. I will however order some cruisers into the vicinity of Jolo next turn in an attempt to plug the gap.

Vigan and Laoag fall and the latter will get some CAP immediately. Note that Roger has already positioned some PT boats at Legaspi and Naga, which was going to be the target for my southern invasion force. I guess I will have to send the cavalry in first... Landings have also taken place at Davao and Cagayan, the latter will receive an air flotilla via fast transport as soon as it falls. Then come the Netties...

Units are debarking well at Singora and Kota Bharu, and the 1st Tk Rgt has moved quickly enough to cut the railroad, trapping the Allied forces trying to strat move out of Alor Star. Roger's been pretty quiet in the air so I'd better keep a lookout for any CAP traps being planned. The general plan is to reassemble the IJA infantry divisions from their components to help reduce losses when we cross the Causeway. Meanwhile, our advanced elements will harry the retreating Brits...

Several IJN SCTFs break into the Sulu and Celebes Seas, while the mini KB steams west to intercept Allied shipping in the vicinity of Jolo. Saigon-based LBA also scores a notable victory by sinking the bulk of an Allied TF trying to sneak past Samah. A whole squadron of Allied PTs are sunk without loss at Naga prior to my invasion TF making land there.

Amphibious Assaults go in at Hollandia and Wewak.

Guam and Manokwari are captured.

Ground combats take place at Hong Kong, Cagayan and Davao. Cagayan should fall soon. I hope I have enough firepower at Davao but if not I have a reserve at Babeldaob that will be able to tip the balance. At HK its primarily a question of resting my troops between attacks and keeping up the artillery bombardments and bombing runs in the meantime

Roger has caught wind of my landing at Naga - via SigInt no doubt - and has rushed some units there to provide a welcoming committee. The AV is roughly comparable at the moment but fortunately I have a second wave coming in soon. I am going to DA this turn and hope the quality of my troops wins the day. If I can shatter these PA units there will be less available to defend Manila.

I forgot to mention that last turn my recon picked up a lot of APs in Singapore indicating the possible evacuation of some non-restricted units. I'm not in a position to do much about this at the moment and, on the plus side, it may well make it a whole lot easier to take Singers in a few weeks time. I may need to race to Rangoon even earlier though, in case he plans to reinforce here to keep the Burma Road open as long as possible. As for the Malaya campaign itself, 6th and 15th Indian Bdes remain trapped at Alor Star and we are now marching on Georgetown now as well.

Up to 4 Allied SSs are now patrolling around Babeldaob, which is a pain given that this is my key hub in the area at the moment. Davao (which finally fell today) and Cagayan will also be developed as ports. Torpedo-packing Betties and their Zero escorts are already operational at the latter base.

Brunei falls the day after Miri.

A further bombardment attack is made at Hong Kong and we will go in with a DA next turn. Heavy bombing is still taking place and I think a few more days will do it.

Trying to make sense of the situation in China. Roger and I have an agreed bias to keep the campaign focus on theatres outside of China without ignoring this important area - call it Slightly Quieter China if you will. It may seem controversial to some but I am actually not all that interested in striving to capture Chungking and do not plan to assemble armoured divisions and heavy artillery in China to help achieve this. The majority of buyouts will be used to further strategies in other parts of the Greater Asian Co-Prosperity Sphere. What I will do however is keep the pressure up in China, and, in particular, claim any low-hanging fruit that falls into the basket.

A glance at the map will show that my opponent has not shown any designs on Ichang so far, while seeming content to hang on to Chengchow and Loyang while regrouping other forces on the Chinese plains. My current design is to save Ichang and also make the other two cities into a salient which will be squeezed at both ends, allowing the Chinese forces to be defeated in detail owhen they are forced to run for the hills as surely they must do soon...

Oh, and the other significant China event this turn was...

About 1/2 a dozen Allied sub attacks on various targets, luckily most target the escorts- and we know how difficult it is to hit a DD with a torp.

However, it's just my luck that the first time an Allied sub hits anything at all, the victim is an AP carrying elements of the 33rd div for the forthcoming Burma campaign. Mizuho Maru should make port okay in a few days as long as lightning doesn't strike twice...

In Malaya, Georgetown falls to the first DA, having been softened up nicely by repeated bombing runs. Alor Star will soon be cleared out, and the race south will begin in earnest. Roger seems to be covering most Malay bases with minor units - no more than speed bumps I guess.

I bomb Manila port, mainly to prevent fort levels rising, and get a few hits on ARD YFD-1 Dewey into the bargain.

Three Allied PT boats fail to deter my landing at Ternate. Should fall next turn.

And that's about it as various amphibious TFs continue to move towards their targets while the covering forces rush about like anxious shepherd dogs to protect the next one in line.

Ternate falls and additional forces land at Manado. A further TF is also en route to Sorong. It will be good to get some more search capability into the Celebes Sea. Right now, I can't see what is going on properly, with Mavis's flying at the limits of their range from Babeldaob.

Torpedo-armed Betties flying from Cagayan are set to nav attack with 10% search but I suspect that most Allied shipping has withdrawn to the south and west of Balikpapan by now. However the threat is there should my opponent decide to sally out. In other games I have found that Allied SCTFs used judiciously can mount effective assaults on lightly-guarded invasion TFs which is why I am investing quite a lot in terms of covering forces.

The rest of the turn is relatively uneventful. More ASW attacks off the W Coast and I am now in the process of redeploying air units from HK and Indochina to the Philippines and Malaya.

The AVG hasn't shown up yet. I wonder if Roger will keep it in Burma or deploy in China. The latter worries me more as I do not have a good situation yet when it comes to fighter escorts.

Manado falls to Japanese forces for the loss of DMS W-14, torpedoed by S-37.

Invasions also go in at Rabaul, Kavieng, Sorong and Kuching. No Allied SCTFs in evidence so far, but subs are loitering around Kuching.

CA Myoko hits a mine in the hex adjacent to Naga. Roger must have used subs to drop the mines. Two DMS are detached from a nearby TF to deal with the problem and Myoko will puts into Naga to stabilise before moving back to a shipyard in Japan. A6M2s are flying CAP over Naga. A6M2s sweep Clark but there are no fighters in the air to oppose them.

SS I-168 sights Allied Ships xAKL Pulganbar and AM Penguin near Deboyne Islands at 102,135. Must check out what's going on there.



Turning to Malaya, our attack at Alor Star goes in pretty well dropping the forts to 0. We will attack again tomorrow.

Sorong and Rabaul both fall, the latter appearing to have been partly evacuated beforehand. The attack at Kavieng is halted until further reinforcements arrive. Several 139WH-3s and Hudson I's are shot down by the Zuiho air group which was covering the Sorong invasion.

In Malaya, the 42nd Infantry Regiment pushes 2nd Malay Battalion out of Taiping to capture the town. Further north at Alor Star, 6th Indian Brigade and 15th Indian Brigade both surrender after being surrounded and shock attacked. 2782 casualties reported.

A6M2s and Ki-43-Ib flying from Kota Bharu sweep Singapore for the first time encountering 50+ Buffalos in air defence. The kill ratio is better than 2:1 in our favour. I suspect that the CAP is mainly there to protect Allied shipping as more APs are spotted in the vicinity.

Japanese Shock attack at Kuching drops the fort level to zero.

HK harbour is cleared of mines but DMS W-17 hits one although is able to put into the shipyard for repairs.

BB Ise and BB Nagato mount a night naval bombardment of Wenchow causing a fair bit of damage before returing to Shanghai to rearm.

Tavoy, Kuching, Tarawa and Makin are all captured today.

SS I-166 spots the following Allied ships hugging the coast of Sumatra, no doubt in the process of evacuating unrestricted units from Singapore: xAP Pijnacker Hordijk, xAP Matang, DD Vampire.

I'm still advancing south from Taiping so it will be a week or two before I'm ready to assault Singapore. Now that I have a base at Kuching I can take Singkawang in a few days time and will then be able to interdict shipping in the vicinity more easily.

The airfield at Manila is bombed hard again. No CAP around.

Here is the situation in North China where the Chinese units left on the plains are all making a break for the hills. Some 20+ fighters are spotted at Sian making me wonder if the AVG is preparing to make an appearance. Ichang still looks safe. I'll need to move faster if I want to cut off more of the retreating Chinese units...

My opponent is taking care to mine as many potential landing sites as possible rendering a good DMS continent essential in all invasion TFs. Kuching and Catanduanes - the hex adjacent to Naga were so treated. It's a shame that the valuable DMS are often the first in line to get shelled or torpedoed when used in their intended role.

By sailing close enough to Oz I reveal the KB's location but only manage to nab a couple of AKLs and the ill-fated Penguin...

Further south, I have decided to obliterate the remnants of the force that I assaulted at Naga before turning to march on Manila.

We go in heavy with successive Oscar and Zero sweeps to try and wear down the CAP over Singapore. Some 50 Buffalos rise to meet the onslaught and, although more Allied planes are destroyed in air to air, we suffer a number of write-offs due in part to the extended range flying from Kota Bharu and Taiping. I'm looking forward to capturing some forward bases in the next few days.

Blenheim bombers hit 42nd Infantry Regiment near Taiping causing several hundred casualties and reminding me of the importance of setting CAP over my forward echelons. However, the 42nd still rumbles over the roadblock set up by 2nd Malay Battalion (which promptly surrenders).

Kavieng falls to I/66th Naval Guard Unit, newly reinforced by 2nd Indpt SNLF Coy, and the latter re-embarks immediately to resume its mission to Madang.

Manado receives an air flotilla base unit and 27 torpedo-armed Betties. Still no major Allied warships within search range in the Celebes Sea.

Status: offline 		Uhm, China is one big VP farm. You mostly suffer disabled squads (for which your opponent gets no victory points) while gaining VPs for destroyed Chinese devices. A nice VP cushion for late war.
