There appear to be per-level caps on attack and defense values for units. In the post battle screen, it's possible to spend upgrade points on attack or defense past these caps, but then when you confirm the spend, the cap is enforced, truncating the values back to the cap level (and wasting the points you have spent.)

The easiest illustration of this is to play the tutorial battle, then after the post-battle tutorial messages have finished, try upgrading the archer unit a couple of times. Spend all points on defense each time. After the first upgrade, all points actively spent on defense in subsequent upgrades are wasted.
