Clearly 9000 feet is too low and there is a shed-load of CAP. Probably KB has doubled-back. I didn't fall for it this time.

RAF had a bad day over Siam yesterday with the Japs half wrecking 2 squadrons of Beaufighters on ground attack missions. Bombers switch to Rangoon and we will send some Hurris over Bangkok to see if there is a CAP

**********Feb 12 1943(e)**********

PI: KB spotted NE of Ceram protecting Boela so Cleveland is sent back to bombard Busuanga AF. Nice, nice, very nice..

Time for the 53rd Calypso

Oh, a sleeping drunkard
Up in Central Park,
And a lion-hunter
In the jungle dark,
And a Chinese dentist,
And a British queen—
All fit together
In the same machine.
Nice, nice, very nice;
Nice, nice, very nice;
Nice, nice, very nice—
So many different people
In the same device.

Most of the Jap Arty takes the day off and their armor too...and the engineers....but they take the forts down to zero and manage better odds.

Still, they take heavy casualties to the infantry.

Ceram and New Guina: KB is capping Boela from 100 miles out. Boela now has two BB's and cruisers. We decline a night battle and pull back toward Darwin. We decline a day battle too and pull the remaining bombers back to Darwin.

We send some B-24's over Boela at night so they can't sleep.

New Britain and New Ireland: If the KB is going to sit over at Ceram we are going to cap Rabaul.

I started Canberra up around Rabaul to hit the Japs in New Guinea from the East.

Grooming advice needed:

I just looked at myself in the mirror and realized I am starting to look like Elmo Zumwalt (eyebrows) but only with reading glasses.

Without the glasses I look great but with the glasses I see I missed a few spots shaving and my eyebrows are like Elmo Zumwalt. I need to arrest this now before I go full Brezhnev. The thing is I can't see the wild hairs without the glasses but they get in the way of trimming them.

It gets worse - when the hair retreats from the top of your head it goes to all kinds of places it was never intended to be, like on the ears and even on the top of the eyelids! I pluck them when they get long enough but the same glasses/eyesight conundrum is there so you have to go a bit by feel - or perhaps see an esthetician. In Thailand I saw them plucking hairs with a string, doubled over and pulled taut, they sort of twist and snap to remove the hair. A skill I could never replicate, I am sure!

Cap: Not from your AAR or game, but thought you'd appreciate this note I sent to my PBEM partner:

Sent this to my PBEM opponent yesterday. I enjoy writing these narratives every now and again when something from the game 'tickles me'.

October 12, 1942

Captains Matsumo of I-172, Saburo Terauchizi of Nenohi, Kazura Wakabayashi of Kawakaze and Eido Arachi of Hatsuharu are passing the time at the rifle target range in Suva. In exchange for a couple of bottles of sake, a local infantryman had gladly offered his type 99 Arisaka rifle to Cpt. Matsumo for the day. Matsumo places 3 recently 'liberated' ceramic plates 200 yards downrange from the firing position and returned to the group.

Matsumo: "OK. Here rules: Everybody get-ah 3 shots. We buy drinks for pahson hit ah-most tahgets".

All [in unison]: "Hai!"

Matsumo: "OK. Since I borrow rifah and set up prates, Matsumo shoots furhst."

All [in unison]: "Hai!"

Matsumo takes careful aim at the distant plates and fires. His first shot tracks high and left. He grunts and makes some adjustments to the sights. His second shot also tracks high and left, but not as wide of the mark as the first shot. He angrily adjusts the sights for his final shot, but gains control, slows down his breathing, and gently exhales half of his air. He holds his breath momentarily while his finger tightens on the trigger. The report of the rifle surprises him.

The 7.7mm projectile hurtles towards its target, curving downwards in a predictable ballistic arc. The bullet strikes the dirt berm immediately in front of the plate, causing the plate to leap upwards, spinning. Improbably, the spinning plate falls back onto the berm next to the other plates, upright and undamaged, right where it started.

Matsumo: "WHAT AH HERR!!! It-ah shourd have broken! That-ah no fair!"

The others erupt in gales of laughter, pointing at Matsumo's red face. Matsumo angrily hands the rifle to Wakabayashi.

Matsumo: "Arright, smart-ah-ass! You try!"

Wakabayashi takes the rifle and aims. His lack of experience with a modern firearm shows. He works the bolt awkwardly and has clear difficulty rationalizing the sight picture. 3 shots and 3 misses. The others laugh at his difficulty.

Wakabayashi: "Hai! Wakabayashi nevah good with-ah rifah anyway. Here, Arachi. You do it bettah. Show me how, dumb-ah-ass."

Arashi dutifully takes the rifle and prepares to fire. His form is better than Wakabayashi, but he is still a rank amateur, never having fired one outside of some distant naval academy training. His atrophied skills show. 3 shots. 3 misses. More banter and ribbing from the others.

Arashi: "This-ah rifah sucks. Sights arr messed up. Come on, Terauchizi-you wirr see. Youah turn now, raffing boy!"

He hands the rifle to Terauchizi who takes his position behind the rifle. The rapidity of the shots and the subsequent rapid and smooth working of the bolt surprise the onlookers. One by one, all three plates vanish in ceramic clouds of dust.

The onlookers stand looking down at their friend with their mouths agape.

Terauchizi: "Ha! Suckas buy Terauchizi drinks now! Hai!"

Matsumo: "It-ah stirr no fair! Matsumo should have gotten that-ah furst one! That-ah ruck nevah happen again! Evah!"

Get a beard trimmer for the eyebrows. Some even have an attachment for the ears.

Men don't lose their hair, it just goes underground and sprouts in other places.

Or just put nair in the shampoo bottle.

Clearly you need to stop wearing glasses around mirrors.

The nose hairs are the worst. I've relegated one of those little 'eyebrow' trimmers to the unpopular task of being a designated nose hair trimmer for the task. All the other stuff (ears, eyebrows, unibrow, etc.) can be done with something else.

Maybe - El Dorado is variously translated as "the Golden", "the Gilded One", "the Golden One"

I owe the IRS a check for $35K F****** parasites. I think a large portion is going to my stepson who gets $800 a week in unemployment from Virginia and a $1200 stimulus check. In fairness he does work hard but does he have to be so happy about it?
