Just in case you think I was making that up about the Wellington...the Stardust story is true too.

Is that wood?

No, metal. Aluminum I am pretty sure. Skin is fabric.

What if JJ switched to Buckyballs for ammo?

I think the rivets are corroded because it was fished out of Loch Ness. Looks like restoration work was down on the forward frame lattice. Nose appears to be solid as are the wing leading edges.

They are named after Buckminster Fuller who invented the geodesic dome and many other things but not the Wellington bomber...which really isn't "geodesic" but utilizes a triangular lattice for stability which seems to foreshadow Fuller's design. It does make me wonder if he knew about the Wellington.

He took the concept and made it fuller.

Johnny Cash had a song about him (Buckminster) but it didn't go along with "How do you do" so they changed it to "Sue"

While B. Fuller is credited with the invention - he didn't really do it first by a long shot. There was a demonstration building put up somewhere 20 years before he said he invented it (at some German tech fair). From Wikipedia:
"The first dome that could be called "geodesic" in every respect was designed after World War I by Walther Bauersfeld,[1] chief engineer of the Carl Zeiss optical company, for a planetarium to house his planetarium projector. A first, small dome was patented, constructed by the firm of Dykerhoff and Wydmann on the roof of the Zeiss plant in Jena, Germany. A larger dome, called "The Wonder of Jena", opened to the public in July 1926.[2] Some 20 years later, R. Buckminster Fuller named the dome "geodesic" from field experiments with artist Kenneth Snelson at Black Mountain College in 1948 and 1949. Although Fuller was not the original inventor, he is credited with the U.S. popularization of the idea by falsely claiming its design for which he received U.S. Patent 2,682,235A on 29 June 1954."

Pretty sure he did know about the Wellington (if memory serves)

Other fun facts:
-Nikola Tesla was fooling around taking x-rays pictures of himself (and other things) several years before Roentgen - but he didn't think to publish. He did started publishing after he saw what it did for Roentgen, and is generally credited with first writing about the bad effects xrays could have on the body (after he burned himself with them).

- Leo Szilard patented the design for the cyclotron (wasn't called that then) before Ernest Lawrence thought of it. Lawrence did eventually build one, and got the Nobel prize for it.

Yeah, but does Roentgen have a car named after him floating in space?

Back in the day, when I was President of the corporation (before all the Asian women took over) a staff flunkie screwed up and lost a big health plan contract so 30,000 patients disappear overnight. We had just taken long-term leases on new office space and hired a bunch of people...bad mojo. We were happy with the previous arrangement but the Health System big shots wanted to "serve the community better" (i.e. steal patients from other hospitals)

Anyway, any idiot could see we had to downsize so we arranged 7 AM meetings every morning for two weeks to hash it out. It was no fun....at the start..but by half way through the first meeting I had compiled a list of idiotic business jargon that the guys and gals on the other side of a huge conference table spouted like it was the gospel of Luke. I can't even remember all the silliness at this point but some were:

"Drill down"....nominally, to investigate further after a probing question by the doctors but what it really means is "oh ****, we didn't think of that"

"Best practice"....when you first hear this it sounds like some kind of lofty, rational, almost mathematical unified theory of the universe..but what it really means is.."We will tell you what you have to do later after we decide what costs less"

"Burning platform"...yes..I know what you are thinking.."did I not read enough books in college..I feel inadequate..is it Biblical...maybe Admiral Nelson mentioned it at Trafalgar""..but after the second person on the other side of the table said the same thing I realized it REALLY means "The Big Boss told us this is important and we will scramble about like Kapuchin monkeys picking up the bright and shiny objects until we make our nightly take"

I compiled a glossary and gave it out secretly to the other medical group members. The meeting started on day 2. We all drink our coffee and have our bagels. Someone on the other side says "drill down" and everyone on our side looks at their shoes. Someone says "best practice" and all the doctors try to maintain. Finally, about 30 minutes in someones utters "burning platform" and it's all over. I never got invited to a higher board. I wonder why.

We did something similar - buzzword bingo! Just make a bingo matrix with a buzzword in each box and hand them out to participants. Everyone hides them in their leather-bound folder and appears to be taking notes studiously during the meeting, making the boss happy and the participants entertained.

We sold "Bullshit Bingo" cards in the lobby between sets. I've been one of the fortunate few to whisper "BINGO!" loudly into my colleague's ear while brandishing my winning card with pat check-offs such as "Polymerase Chain Reaction", "Enzyme-linked Immunosorbent Assay" and "Avian Influenza".

How do you get a bunch of old ladies to swear - quite possibly in a church? Yell "BINGO" before they do!

Church bingo players are just as addicted as sports betters or a guy that goes to the track 7 days a week. Maybe they don't drink as much.

Just got back from a fly-fishing trip on the Madison and Henry's Fork of the Snake. Great fun although two days were rainy and near freezing. Got warm at the end and the bite picked up.

Here is a 24 1/2 inch rainbow on Henry's Fork. The other angler in my boat was not happy because it was cold and sleeting.

My brother-in-law caught a 25 inch male rainbow that was even fatter 2 days earlier. Same guide. 2 biggest fish landed in last 7 years on Henry's Fork.

Here is my biggest rainbow from the day on the Snake. Not a bad fish but pathetic compared to the royal example above. I caught some 20+ inch Whitefish on the Snake but nobody takes a picture of that.

Caught some 20 inch Browns on the Madison.

It was 34 F when we started out with horizontal rain and sleet. Fortunately, the rain slowed down or we would all have turned to Troutsickles.

****************March 16, 1943(e)**************

Sundas and such: I start to make preparations for a possible Jap landing on Kai-elanden. I send some PT squadrons up toward Dobo to stage to cover Kai-elanden and perhaps bait some Jap bombers into a Cap-trap. Two squadrons each go to Taberfane and Dobo. Roti and Koepang and Saumlaki and Babar are mostly sanitized of planes because they are more exposed.

White fish are delicious smoked. You just have to get some big rolling papers.

I don't know if I can eat trout or salmon. Sardines and pickled herring are fine, even flounder fillets. I know that I can't eat cod or tuna without problems. The problems are when the uric acid forms crystals in the joints.

Indian Ocean: Despite the efforts of the TBF's at Christmas Island, there are too many Japs ashore so the TBF's escape to the waiting CVE to the NW and the Corsairs back to Padang on Sumatra. We get out about 300 engineers by seaplane back to Sumatra but nearly 600 become POWs

About 2 dozen transports arrive at Padang (Sumatra) with a RN SCTF and are covered by the P-38's and Corsairs ashore...plus LRCAP from the USN carriers about 120 mi offshore. Surprisingly, there are no Jap anti-shipping attacks. This probably won't last tomorrow.

I predict 5 ships sunk, 10 damaged at Padang. Here's hoping none of them are carriers.
