This purely for the purpose of historical immersion.

SG dragged to a party at one of her home IV infusion clients. Beautiful place with outdoor bar, bigscreen,
fireplace, waterfalls, giant pots..the whole nine yards....just installed at great cost. This means, of course, that they will be divorced inside of three years but I didn't tell anyone as that would ruin the party.

Place was full of $500+ an hour lawyers. So I'm watching the highlights of the USC/Stanford game and a guy who looks like Quincy Jones with a Rolex walks up and says...

"I just lost $500 on that game" Now, to me, that is a pretty big sports bet but I try to show empathy. Instinctively, I know not to look impressed. I order him a free drink and he asks me where I live..so I tell him. He tries not to look impressed.

Now it's his turn. "I'm down in the Hunt Club (big estates in San Juan Capistrano). I had a place down at the beach too but we sold it..we just didn't want to give up to the privacy of 6 acres"

It is now obvious what the game is here. This is what you call a "d*** waving party". No, not that...the idea is to show off how much money you have. It think one is supposed to establish a pecking order by the end of the night. The best thing is to not cooperate. It bugs the crap out of them.

All the wives have had plastic surgery. The hostess greets me and SG and blabs on about what a great catch SG is and I nod politely but I can't help looking at her lips which are so full of silicon she looks like a platypus. I swear I thought the bottom one was going to explode the next time she made the "B" sound. The bottom lip had evidently just had a tune up because it stuck out about 1 cm further than the top.

I kept telling myself.."Smile..DONT LOOK AT THE LIPS..DONT LOOK AT THE LIPS". Now, don't get me wrong, there were some serious breastesses with nipplage all over the place but I never once had to tell myself "DONT LOOK AT THE HEADLIGHTS" because the lip thing was so over the top it was like transporting to another planet. All the women went to the same pilates class and the female instructor was there. She was dangerously fit if you know what I mean.

SG and I were talking to this smart "Swedish" guy who did not look like any Swede I ever saw and spoke slightly accented Engrish but not with a Swedish accent. It was right after the San Bernardino attack and SG starts swerving into an anti-muslim rant. I kick her under the table but it's too late. He's an "Afghani-Swede" and he rises to defend islam. of course, this doesn't stop him from powering down alcohol and checking out all the breastesses.

I don't want to give the wrong impression. It was a fun party. That's the magic of alcohol.

Parties like that make me yearn for a Yurt in the Rockies, a massive slip-fracture in the Hayward fault and an assortment of firearms with silicon-defeating ballistic tips on 'em.

I drive through Superior once. Everything was grey. Water, sky, ground, buildings. Windy and cold as hell. Been thinking about going back.

Thirsty Pagan is a good place for microbrew and pizza.

When I went back up a few years ago it was in July. Everywhere in the state, temps were in the mid-90s. I saw the city sitting in a fog bank and knew it would be good. When we got into town, the temperature dropped to 56.

You should go during the summer. Both days are nice.

Used to drive the North side of Lake Superior in summer going to visit relatives. The scenery is spectacular but the days were brutally hot and A/C was a luxury in cars back then rather than standard equipment. The kids were dying in the heat so we stopped where the road dipped close to the lake and went down to wade in the water. It was ICE cold! Your blood vessels contracted so quickly your feet hurt and your BP went up! Lake Superior never warms up!

Baah. You discount the salubrious health effects of the leeches.

Not to mention the mosquitos with the wingspan of a B-17 (D model)

I think it's more Norwegians and Finns that ways. Door County is more Swedish.

The first time I saw a cow pie when I was a kid I wondered how a cow could move its ass with such precision.

Later, I wondered if they go the other way in the Southern Hemisphere. I love science.
