When you consider the Fremm "frigate" in FFGX configuration will have 32 VLS launcher and 16 NSM launchers a 21 Ram point defense missile system. Its displacement will be in the 7k ton range have space for 2 air assets, and 2 rib launches. It is more Destroyer than Frigate.

This is more like a Burke III light (only missing the aft VLS)

Saudi Arabia wants a lot of missiles:

The Boeing Co., St. Louis, Missouri, is awarded a $1,971,754,089 firm-fixed-price contract to provide non-recurring engineering associated with the Stand-off Land Attack Missile – Expanded Response (SLAM ER) obsolescence redesign effort as well as the production and delivery of 650 SLAM ER missiles in support of the government of Saudi Arabia. Work is expected to be complete by December 2028

And 402 Harpoon Block II missiles and support equipment for the government of Saudi Arabia.
Work is expected to be complete by December 2026.

The German yards Lürssen and German Naval Yards are joining together.

quote:

Lürssen intends to establish a long-term cooperation in naval shipbuilding with German
Naval Yards Kiel. The existing military and naval surface shipbuilding activities are to be
contributed into a joint company and led by Bremen-based Lürssen Group. The objective of
the combination is to improve the structure of the German shipbuilding industry and to
bolster its efficiency and sustainability. This week, the two shareholding families have
successfully laid the foundation for a definitive contractual agreement for the joint
company. The proposed combination remains subject to approval by the relevant merger
control authorities.

LOL, I know this is not the DB3000 thread, this was more a generic this new "frigate" is closer to a destroyer than a frigate in both size and capability. I also read that there is room to grow the VLS to a 48 cell launcher.

I've always found it interesting that today's "Destroyers" are as big as, and more capable than WWII Cruisers. I wager that most folks with no military background, especially Naval, have no concept of the differences.

Of course a similar scaling factor exists for USAF units. A single F-15 can carry an ordnance load of about 16,000lbs vs a B-17's 17,600lb but with a 1-2 person crew vs 10. About the same ranges 2,400mi vs 2,000 but at 65,000ft vs 36,000ft and 1,875mph (afterburner) vs 287mph.

For the Army just compare the Patton tank to the M1A1 Abrams.

The times are indeed changing!

So gang is there any reason why the US shouldn't create an Arsenal B-21, which could silently orbit behind a strike package armed with 2 dozen AIM-260's, the canceled AIM-152 AAAM's or maybe the super duper upcoming LREW missile, on some type of rotary internal launchers to swat unwary bad guy aircraft then closeup and retire behind a loyal wing man Jamming screen?

Similar idea has been kicking around since Dale Brown era (B-52 Megafortress, etc).

I think the problem is the Arsenal becomes a massive high value target. The US is moving towards flat, distributed ops with lots of sensors and shooters. Having just one shooter doesn't really line up with Deptula's 'Mosaic Warfare' concept.

I supposed you could read the article as if the triton and B1s loaded with LRASMs as part of the Mosaic (or the disaggregated "kill web"). But Arsenal a/c are vulnerable as you mentioned and they tend to be contrary to the idea. The triton itself fits with the idea better.

The U.S. has assessed that Moscow has deployed military fighter aircraft to Libya to support Russian state-sponsored private military contractors (PMCs) operating on the ground there:

This might be mentioned elsewhere here, but conceptually USAF is moving towards 'disposable' or low-cost attritable UAVs to carry the weapons. Tyler R has a long article on The Drive about the Flying Missile Rail from DARPA. The Loyal Wingman idea is about carrying the sensor payload to find and disrupt the targets. It sounds like the LCATs would be in front, like MALD, but with a bunch of embedded AI. No idea on cost but it has to be less than a manned aircraft ... or an S-300/400 missile.

Reminds me of how China announced they'd bought the Varyag to be a 'floating casino' instead of refurbishing it back into a carrier, as they did.

The Finnish Defense Forces has just released a video detailing how they would respond to any situation in their country. Also, if you pause at around 1:40 you can see a screenshot of what appears to be C:MO. It's not allowing me to post links so I'll just post the ending of the url for anybody who wants to watch it.

The troubled pantsir s1 in the news again. Going to degrade its capabilities in a test to see if a drone can take it out. With normal settings it's effective in CMO.

It's a rather one-sided article. There are 54 downed Turkay-made UAVs vs 6 or 9 destroyed Pantsirs. One Pantsir costs about $14 millons, and Bayraktar TB2 costs about $5 millions. As for me - Pantsirs won. This is only arithmetic. We will not remember about necessary of layered AD systems, right tactic, quality of personnel training and so on.
