SECDEF Carter Confirms Navy Developing Supersonic Anti-Ship Missile for Cruisers, Destroyers

quote:

Secretary of Defense Ash Carter confirmed the Navy was developing a modification to the Raytheon Standard Missile 6 that will give the service a supersonic anti-ship weapon to reach a target more than 200 nautical miles away. “We are going to create a brand-new capability,” Carter told reporters in San Diego on Wednesday. “We’re modifying the SM-6 so that in addition to missile defense, it can also target enemy ships at sea at very long ranges.”

Not exactly a news but,
reading various things about Su-35S with RVV-SD (R-77-1) missiles in Syria

in english speaking part of internet it seems people dont "get" this whole R-77 story

So , who is who in R-77 family

In 1982 "Vympel" starting K-77 programm , this missile for Mig-29S have range 50km and active radar homing head 9B1348 , in 1987 there is decision about stopping R-27EA and K-77 programms and starting K-77M (old K-77M) , K-77M have range 70km (80km against "some" targets) and active radar homing head 9B1348M1 (16km lock range against 5 m2 RCS target) , this thing known as izd. 170 and after ending trials in Akhtubinsk recive designation R-77.
After end of trials in 1994 there is 200 missiles left in Akhtubinsk and this is one and only batch of R-77 that was in Russian Air Forces, in 1998 special committee
of VVS try to find this missiles and find nothing , most of them sold to China or India or used in training

RVV-AE (izd. 190) is missile created by "Vympel" and "Agat" but without Ukrainean parts in active radar homing head , instead "Agat" create 9B1348E export variant of 9B1348M1

there is ~1600 missile in India and 1500 in China (most likely extracting 9B1348E for PL-12) also varios other smaller contracts

RVV-SD , R-77-1 (izd. 170-1) in 2003 Russian MoD starting R-77-1 programm, this missile have range 110km and active radar homing head 9B1103M-200PA (20km lock range against 3m2 RCS targets), R-77-1 intended to be used not only with modern but also with modernized fighters, so since all this Su-27SMs ,Mig-31BM and various old Mig-29 have problems with datalink or old datalinks with insufficient range , 9B1103M-200PA came with solution:
"The antenna seeker 9B-1103M-200PA - combined. In active mode, a homing head operating in the Ku-band, using a waveguide slot antenna,in semi-active mode, the antenna use array of 16 dipoles mounted on the front surface of the antenna"

prostheses in aviation ,well all for older planes can use modern missiles without high cost upgrade
this is what Russian aviation buy currently and this is what we see in Syria

izd.180 missile (RVV-SD for PAK-FA bays),range 140km active radar homing head 9B1103M-200PS(15km lock range against 3m2 RCS target) ,have :
"Passive mode allows to direct the missile on noise sources and emitting radar enemy aircraft."
with range of passive detection of enemy signals 200km

and finaly RVV-AE-PD (izd.180-PD) ramjet part of family , range 250km (against "some" targets ) active radar homing head 9B1103M-200PS

See when people talk about "this is R-77 ,in service from 90s" , "many planes in RuAF can use this missile without problem" or "finaly Russia buy RVV-AE" really hurts

Thanks for your very interesting explanations Triode (I did know about the 200 missiles of the 1994 production lot, but not about their dissapereance at Akhtubinsk!), but I'm not sure to understand it clearly:
- The only R-77 variant now in service in Russian Air Force is the 110 Km range RVV-SD , R-77-1 (izd. 170-1)?
- Is his IOC 2013?
- Are those the missiles employed by Su-35S in Syria.
- Is employed actually in other planes?
- Has been exported this updated variant, or other?
Thanks.

Yes

- Is his IOC 2013?
Testing started in 2005 , in 2010 missile go to Akhtubinsk ,2012 missile accepted for service , in 2015 first big contract for izd.170-1 with two batches :
"Delivery time:
- Up to 25 November 2016;
- Before 25 November 2017."
So,currently there is preserial missiles in Akhtubinsk and Lipetsk ,some missiles in VVS arsenals from first part of this contract

- Are those the missiles employed by Su-35S in Syria.
Yes , Su-35S in Syria have R-77-1

- Is employed actually in other planes?
Currently only on Su-35S ,through it is more matters of pilots not planes, Su-30SM and Su-34 in Syria can use this missile

- Has been exported this updated variant, or other?
No ,RVV-SD not exported yet

You mean extracting (still purchase R-77 and then rip out the radar), or extracted (copied R-77 radar)?

purchase RVV-AE and then rip out the radar

last "Chinese" contract for RVV-AE ended in 2008

after that China achieve direct cooperation with "Agat"
what included in this cooperation is unknown,
direct purchase of 9B1348E ? or joint development of new ARH head for Chinese missiles?
questions ,questions ...

The Chinese active-homing AAM missile with Russian seekers extracted from R-77 probably was the original SD-10, and IOC 2002:

Possibly the PL-12B that's the standard AAM at this day included an upgraded variant of the seeker, among other improvements. Sadly China does not release any information about her AAM developments, but it is at least confirmed that the PL12B has certain 'guidance system improvememts'. Too bad that the DB only has the original PL-12 with R-77 seeker anno early 90's. Hopefully, more informations will be leaked or even released regrding the PL-15, which is to replace the PL-12.

And even range wise, there are confusions. The USAF for example believes the range of the PL-12 to be 100km, while the export SD-10 and early PL-12 from 2002 is quoted to be 70-75km. Possibly the 100km range PL-12 could be the B variant from 2008.

So many active-camo techs or alike roaming around the science magazines and websites for quite a decade, but until this one does using a completely different methodology for blending with the environment.

Still an experimental stage, though:

http://www.popsci.com/artificial-chameleon-scales-key-step-to-color-changing-camouflage
http://www.rsc.org/chemistryworld/2016/02/camouflage-plasmonic-skin-nanostructure-colour-change
http://pubs.acs.org/doi/abs/10.1021/acsnano.5b07472
quote:

‘Chameleon’ camouflages itself with plasmonic skin

It may not win any prizes for subtlety yet, but a plasmonic ‘chameleon’ designed by scientists in China and the US could one day prove to be as good at adaptive camouflage as the real thing. Its skin, which is based on colour-shifting nanostructures, could also become a new type of reflective display.

I think we will see tomorrow

No, most likely only stationary targets

P.S. More I look at Su-34 more I think this plane can use everything

Hitting Radio Contrast Ground Target is possible for most missile with ARH seeker and Kh-35UE has both active/passive homing plus Glonass

Considering the alleged lack of PGMs in the Russian airforce, maybe they're using it as a stand-in for AGMs?

is not "Kh-35E Anti-ship missile in its surface launched export variant"
this is Kh-35UE

here is Kh-35E, look at air intake

Kh-35/Kh-35E and Kh-35V (helicopter version)have long air intakes

Kh-35V with Ka-27M prototype "810":

Kh-35U/Kh-35UE have short air intake

Unlikely, Russia still got quite a good amount of Kh-29 -- a rather old and short range AGM from 80s, but mostly compatible to current Fencers and Fullbacks.

What seriously worth mentioning is the lacks of JSOW-class munitions for Russian AF, considering the glide-bomb can offer greater range (but still shorter than Kh-35) than most of the short-range AGMs, while packing much more punch than small missile warheads.

Babes on a Switchblade (Kh-35UE), what else could be?

But seriously, there are 4 kinds of Kh-35's, and I hope the next DB3000 update can check them out:

By selena3D on TurboSquid. From left to right:

Kh-35E (AS-20 Kayak) - tactical anti-ship missile, aircraft based.
Kh-35E (AS-20 Kayak) - tactical anti-ship missile, ship (coast) and helicopter based.
Kh-35UE (AS-X-20 Harpoonsky) - tactical guided missile, aircraft based.
