After the two type 053H2G Jiangwei-Is were converted to coast-guard cutters, it seems that the PLAN is now ready to upgrade their ten Type 053H3 Jiangwei-II FFGs.

What can be discerned is that the HHQ-7 Crotale SAM has been replaced by what appears to be an 18-cell HHQ-10 Point Defense Missile System (Sino-RAM) and at least two of the four Type 76A 37mm AAAs on the bow-deck removed as well. It is said that all four of these obsolete AAAs are to be removed and replaced by two Type 730 CIWS ontop the hangar - just like it was done with the Type 052 Luhu and Type 051B Luhai MLUs. AShM wise, the YJ-82s/C-802 are likely replaced by the common standard YJ-83/C-803, as all other YJ-8-series armed ships in the PLAN since the early 2000s.

Pre-upgrade Type 053H3 Jiangwei-II, still sporting the HHQ-7 Short Range SAM and the four Type 76A 37mm AAAs.

All in all, if all 10 of the Jiangwei-II FFGs in service receive this upgrade, they would have the basic anti-seaskimmer defensive capabilities to serve as 2nd line ASW and patrol frigates, together with the more modern but lighter and worse armed Type 056 Jiangdao-class corvettes. Especially since the Jiangwei-IIs all have hangars, they would add the much needed ASW helo support to the Type 056 flotillas. And their eight YJ-83s would still make them useful ASuW assets.

If they develop the refitted frigates that way, I think this could be the 'shield' of both PLAN and civilian vessels at war-time. Some sort of fleet that willing to take some damage upfront than just merely controlling the sea.

@Dysta
I believe that the Jiangwei-IIs are still valued assets, mainly due to their hangar and the fact that the youngest of them is merely from 2004/5. So, I dont think that the PLAN would want to waste them as meat-shields in any way. There are still some really old and crappy Jianghu FF and Luda DD around that can do that job, especially when remote controled.

Jiangwei-IIs deserve that upgrade, since their hulls will still serve at least 20 more years. And having a modern close-in air-defense is always a good thing. As said, I believe that they will mainly be used to conduct ASW - their HHQ-10 and Type 730s would be useful to defend against the odd Soryu/Oyashio that cant wait and launches their SSM-1Bs outside their torpedo range.

Anyway; it looks like the first module of the Type 055 Heavy DDG/Cruiser was spotted in Shanghai Jiangnan Shipyard!

It appears that it is the hangar module, as a member of Sinodefenceforums have discerned.

A large hangar such as this might really be able to house two Z-18FQs as rumoured before. Let's wait and see.

It seems today is PLAN-day again. Lots of news in the Chinese forums about the PLAN:

Now, the Type 901 AOE: The defensive armaments (or at least parts of them) are revealed:

http://s32.postimg.org/4g3l354qd/Type_901_AOE_defensive_weapons.jpg

Posting as link, as the picture is really big.

4x AK-630M (only 2 visible, but usually they are equipped on each corner one) and a HHQ-10 launcher, possibly 18-cell variant as equipped on the Liaoning carrier and the Jiangwei-IIs.

There is also a suspiciously raised platform infront of the deck superstructure, which looks like the same platform existing on the 071 LPDs, mounting the H/PJ-26 76mm naval gun. But this has yet to be confirmed.

Anyway, this 45,000 tonne AOE seems to have good self-defense capabilities now.

South Korea's DAPA Selects DSME for KSS-III Batch II Heavy Submarine Design & Construction
quote:

South Korea's Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) announced today that Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) was selected as contractor for “KSS-III Batch-II Design and construction of the first hull”.

The North Korean SLBM launch last month led South Korea's Ministry of National Defense to disclose some details on the KSS-III Batch-II plan ahead of contract announcement.

On April 25, there was a Congressional Hearing session held immediately after North Korea's SLBM launch, which raised some important questions about the ROK Navy's submarine capabilities to counter this threat.

In response to questions whether ROK Navy was currently developing capabilities to counter SLBM threat, the ministry confirmed that KSS-III Batch-II will undergo redesign process before construction (lasting until December 30, 2018) to accommodate some important capability upgrades. These upgrades will give the Batch-II Submarines better capabilities at both attacking strategic land-based facilities and performing anti-submarine warfare.

Expected changes of Batch-II compared to Batch-I:
» Lengthened hull (bringing displacement approx. from 3000t to 4000t)
» Increase of VLS cells from 6 to 10
» Indigenous combat system and sensors
» LiB and, potentially, High-Temperature Superconductor (HTS) motor for integrated full electric propulsion system

^ Because for M777 or Paladin to intercept air targets and missiles you need special ammunition such as SGP or HVP which are not yet fielded, I guess.

Even they got smart munition for AA, how do they aim? Indeed, some SPAAG does have coaxial radar for measuring nuzzle velocity prior its launch for microadjustment, but definitely too weak to seek anything further as a precision guidance.

This is referring to several initiatives under the high/hyper velocity projectile umbrella. Basically, a chemically or electrically driven ~155mm projectile that goes a whole lot faster than a normal howitzer round. Targeting is provided by existing sensors (Patriot, Q-53, Q-50, Sentinel, THAAD, etc) and passed to the gun via IBCS's network.

If it wasn't clear from the article this is a looooong way off.

One of the platforms I supported in 2009 was a self-propelled 155-mm howitzer designed to supplement the XM777's capabilities and replace the M109 as a self propelled indirect fire platform. It carried a reduced load of ammunition to address weight restrictions for air transport, and maintained the kill power of "one shot one kill" smart rounds (essentially less amo, but more lethal with a typical combat load).

At that time, there were no rounds designed as anti-air weapons both because an indirect fire round's speed is significantly lower than that of a jet aircraft or worse, a missile, and because the smart targeting capability was a terminal event that didn't kick in until the round reached a specified distance from the firing platform and then searched for patterns of pre-programmed threats as the round fell to the ground.

There was an effort to include active armor capability on the platform, but that was designed to quickly fire at incoming munitions and missiles to either deflect or destroy the warhead before it impacted the vehicle. Engagements with the system took place in the final half-minute of a projectile's path toward the vehicle, with the detect, evaluate, fire, and hit time frame occurring in milliseconds before the round could impact the vehicle.

The article you cite sounds more like jingoism or perhaps a defense contractor's marketing pitch than solid military planning, at least in terms of what that planning consisted of in 2009.

http://www.janes.com/article/60757/russia-to-modernise-sole-aircraft-carrier-in-2017

The Admiral Kuznetsov will be modernised between 2017 and 2020, very sparse on details but an interesting development.

http://www.janes.com/article/60565/russian-mod-to-be-first-customer-for-the-mi-38

Russian MoD seems to be buying the Mi-38's, but no contracts as of yet. It would make sense to keep Kazan afloat.

http://www.janes.com/article/60518/russia-initiates-multiyear-plan-to-modernise-oscar-ii-ssgns

Oscar II class will be modernised
quote:

The modified Oscar II boats will reportedly carry as many as 72 ASCMs, including a mix of 3M55 Oniks (SS-N-26 'Strobile') and 3M54 Klub (SS-N-27 'Sizzler') missiles.

Sweden orders replacement Torpedo "Torpedo 47" to replace "Torpedo 45" <- our naming is the best.

quote:

"Torpedo 47 will, among other things, be more durable, have a longer range and better speed performance than today's Torpedo 45," said Mikael Ericsson, head of underwater combat at the FMV.

The Tp 47 "will be equipped with both a passive and an active homing device and use wire communication like today's Tp 45"

South Korea's DAPA Selects HHI for KDX-III Batch II Destroyer Design & Construction
quote:

South Korea's Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) announced last week that Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) was selected as contractor for “KDX-III Batch-II Design and construction of the first hull”. The existing 7,600-ton KDX-III Batch I Aegis destroyers of the Republic of Korea Navy (ROK Navy) are based on the DDG 51 class of the US Navy.

In December 2013, South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff decided to increase the number of Aegis destroyers from the current three to six by 2027 to strengthen its maritime combat capabilities against possible provocation from the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK).

While all three destroyers of the second batch will likely not be build by HHI (most ROK Navy orders are split between HHI and DSME the two largest Korean naval shipyards), the Batch II will be designed by Hyundai. Delivery timetable is 2021 for launch of first ship after keel laying in 2020.

According to early information and rumors, KDX-III Batch-II will feature Hybrid-Electric Drive (HED) and BMD 5.1 system. Depending on export agreements, the vessels may receive gallium nitride technology radar components from Japan. The new class will also benefit from an improved electronic warfare suite (Sonata Next Generation), enhanced stealth features and indigenous hull-mounted sonar and active towed aray. Finally, KDX-III Batch-II may be the first South Korean vessel class to be fitted with directed energy weapons (not initially but as part of an upgrade).

Not to mention the top section of the hanger have wider room for double flaps, Su-35 will have a much protected home when the delivery comes.

---

I had a question though, since precision strike munition is widely acquired in this era, what if the bomb isn't drop right at the hanger, but rather the surface besides the gate? The plane might not be damaged without fragmentation munition, but surely can damage the surface and make it stuck, does it?

To cut off the pathway between the taxiway and hanger is also essential to stop the fighters, if not destroying them. Though why must it be paying extra attention to use drill bombs against hangers?

Its commonsense...you can repair a runway or access way fairly quickly. Replacing an plane and its support equipment takes a lot longer (months to years).

Type-818 (hull name for 054A frigate) was launched with Chinese Coast Guard painting scheme. Armament unknown and it is still fitting out.

Seeing how the 054/A platform by now is a proven and mature one with multiple world-wide long-endurance deployments during anti-piracy in the Gulf of Aden, it makes sense for the CCG to request a 054A-based coast-guard ship. I would even say that the 4000 ton Type 818 would beat the 12.000 ton beast in terms of sea-keeping and endurance.
