Yes. The first digit was the Marine Air Wing. The units transferred to a different air wing, and got a different number.

Soo...

The very same day guys in VMD 154 change to VMD 254 and simultaneously guys in VMD 254 change to VMD 154.

Those were two lines directly quoted from a single day report (October 14th 1942).

I know I can be slow some days but today... Screeching halt.

Don't be picking on my Marine Corps.

Depending upon where the wings are located it could be

1) rotational, 1 squadron needing a rest
2) tactical, getting a full strength squadron into a certain location
3) personal, VMF 254 squadron commander, requested reassignment because he didn't want to fly with "Pappy"
4) personal, VMF 154 squadron commander, requested reassignment because he did want to fly with "Pappy"

Although admittedly on the last two the Corps would not reassign the entire squadron to satisfy the squadron commander. (They would probably just tell the commander to suck it up.)
