You get lots of the HA81-A3 aircraft and later some old US fighters but you get very few Chinese pilots. Don't waste them by sending their fighters on bombing missions. You should be using them to try and CAP trap a few of the IJA bombers. It means shuttling your fighters around from base to base where there is a little supply but occasionally you will surprise him.

Re: the Trincomalee landings - the ship and troop losses shown in the report are not "a heavy price" for the numbers he has available. Mere pinprix (purposely misspelled to avoid the auto-censoring of common words!)

BBfanboy-

Well, I'm still happy heavily damaging three more transports and taking some Japanese casualties. *grins*

Well, damn.

I wanted to bomb his troops to hopefully slow him down a bit. But, by the looks of the losses and without any Japanese troops being bombed...seems reasonable to switch to CAP...Though, I don't have many fighters left.

Thanks!

-Terry

My good friend Bob has been following The War College, but he hasn't posted. He enjoys seeing the strategic map every so often. So, here it is, Bob!

Allied Task Forces

Strategic Map

June 6, 1942

I thought I would post this strategic map illustrating the Allied Task Forces to give The War College to illustrate the logistical route from the U. S. West Coast to India.

As you can see, the Task Forces carrying troops, aircraft, supply, and fuel leave the West Coast and head straight down to Tahiti where they [pause to refuel the destroyer escorts.

The Task Forces then leave Tahiti, passing by just under the South Island of New Zealand, and then continue on to Melbourne, pausing again to refuel the destroyer escorts.

From Melbourne, those Task Forces continuing on to India, head up the Eastern Coast of Australia, then jog further East, and then North to Diego Garcia, once again refueling the destroyer escorts.

From Diego Garcia, the Task Forces head due North until even with Bombay, and then head West to Bombay.

You can also see a great deal of Task Force activity around Prince Rupert (feeding troops, supply, and fuel to Alaska and the Aleutian Islands and a great deal of activity between San Francisco and Pearl.

The above Task Force routes are the main logistical routes..for now.

Best Regards,

-Terry

Terry,

That is a mighty circuitous route to India that ties up a lot of shipping and depletes on board fuel at critical locations.

You may want to consider exploiting your off map boxes and transfer routes for this purpose.

I set up shuttles running back and forth between East Coast and Capetown turning Capetown into a distribution hub.

I set up another shuttle back and forth between Capetown and Cochin at the tip of India.

This is also the BEST route for transferring troops and planes to India as they can transfer between off map boxes without monopolizing any on board shipping.

The only on board shipping they will need to get to India is from Capetown to Cochin.

This way the route to Tahiti and then on to New Zealand and Australia can concentrate on stockpiling those locales.

Once established as a hub Capetwon can also supply Australia when the sealanes from the West Coast are interdicted coming in from the south map edge to Perth and/or Melbourne.

If there is ever an opportunity to launch an operation at the DEI having Capetown as a supply/fuel hub bears even more fruit.

+1 Hans. I will also mention that between off-map boxes NO FUEL IS USED! So even if you send one of your WC convoys via Panama and Capetown, the Panama-CT portion will not use any fuel nor accumulate any damage to your ships.

Re: shipping supplies and fuel to build up CT, I have been using the smallest, shortest-ranged ships in convoys of about 20, shipping from EC and Canada to CT.
I did not have many places on-map that needed short-range vessels and were I did I held back some 6500 nm/1700 ton capacity xAKLs. The range issue goes away when you don't have to refuel, and if I want to convert a ship or send it on-map it is easy to do from CT or EC USA. When I have a lull in reinforcements coming in and lots of xAKs waiting for work, I often put a bunch of them on the supply run as well, but instead of unloading at CT they bring the supply on map and go back into the port pool for troop transport.

After Australia/NZ were safe I was finding the huge xAPs that the Allies have could not dock at the smaller ports that needed the troops and took forever to unload without a dock, so I sent them on the EC-CT route hauling supply in Transport mode. I had lots of smaller transports to send troops to the smaller ports. True, they do not move as fast as the big liners, but when you calculate the difference in transit time and deduct the time lost going to interim destinations, unloading and reloading the troops from big liners to smaller xAPs, the time difference is not so much.

Hans and BBfanboy-

I have been using the Cape Town route for the vast majority of ground troops and aircraft that start in the USA and are earmarked for India. I would send them to the East Coast, then on to Cape Town, and then on to India; unloading at various West Coast ports of India, including Cochin.

The longer route via Tahiti is used mostly for fuel, supply and for troops that were earmarked for India, but initially went to reinforce Tahiti or Australia. Recently, many of those initial troops have left Melbourne and Tahiti for India. Presently, U.S. Marines have been pouring into Australia to replace the U.S. Army troops that have headed for or are heading for India.

Several posts back, I posted a thread entitled, "India...USA Forces...June 4, 1942." This post illustrates those forces at Cape Town that are still waiting to be bought out, troops still heading to the East Coast for transfer to Cape Town, and the Task Forces that are still ferrying troops from either San Diego, Pearl, Tahiti, or Melbourne to India.

I do agree that the Cape Town route not only saves fuel, but is a safer route. With what the Allies were doing for the first six months of the war, I just couldn't solely use the Cape Town route as troops earmarked for India had to first reinforce Tahiti and Australia. And, I thought it would be faster for those troops at Pearl to transport in Task Forces versus going back to the U.S., up to the East Coast, then to Cape Town and on to India.

So, it has been a mixture of Cape Town and the Task Force route shown to get the troops to India. It remains a work in progress.

*laughing*

Best Regards,

Terry

B-17E Flying Fortress Question

for

The War College

The Allies have three Squadrons of B-17E bombers (the 5th BG, the 34th BG, and the 307th BG) in the states and at Pearl Harbor.

I am considering buying them out, flying them to the East Coast, and then to Cape Town, and then transporting them to India to be a part of Operation Land Shark (the push toward Manchukuo and Korea) that shall commence no later than October 15, 1942.

Your thoughts on this subject please.

Best Regards,

-Terry

Examine each squadron in each groups to make sure they don't have withdrawal dates before paying for them.

I recall some Groups in the USA have odd squadrons that withdraw.

I try to wait until I have released all important divisions and independent regiments that are critical to my '42 operations before allocating many PPs to purchasing bombers.

I prioritize fighters over bombers.

However, once both LCUs and fighters have been obtained I also advocate buying out the heavies.

Don't overlook the heavies at Pearl. Not much they can reach from there and they are not much of an anti-naval threat so keeping the starting groups there is an inefficient use of them.

Hans-

I will check for any withdrawal date(s).

I learned that lesson the hard way a while back.

I also agree that I should wait to buy out the B-17Es until after all the infantry, AA, and Artillery units are bought out. That will take a couple more months.

As always, thank you for your help.

Best Regards,

-Terry

Japanese Carriers

South of Madras

June 9, 1942

I think there are more than just two enemy carriers off the coast of Ceylon! See map below.

Allied submarines are forming a line West to East and then will move North in an attempt to surround and inflict damage on one of El Lobo's precious Carriers.

Best Regards,

-Terry

poodlebrain-

Yes, the mouseover only shows two carriers. However, a couple days ago the Suryu, Hiryu, Shokaku, and Zuikaku were just off the coast of Ceylon. I'm not sure if he split up that Carrier Group or if the mouseover Carriers are additional Carriers.

I had sent the four British Carriers along with the Prince of Whales Surface Combat Fleet from Bombay toward Ceylon. But, when the Allies spotted those four big Japanese Carriers, the British steamed for their life back to Bombay.

The Allies have issued orders for a couple land-based Torpedo Bomber Squadrons to fly to Ceylon.

The allies have a substantial number of Tenth USAAF Fighters at Bangalore (experience very low, in the 40s') and 227 II U. S. Fighters at Hyderabad. I don't think El Lobo knows that the II U.S. Fighters and V U.S. Bombers are in India and I would like to keep it that way until El Lobo either invades India or I launch an offensive to take back Burma.

I have issued orders for all India AFQ fighter squadrons to fly to Madras. They should land tomorrow. The day before, several AFQ Bombers landed in Madras.

I am considering sending the entire 221 RAF Group (fighters and Bombers) from Karachi to Madras.

Other than that, approximately 15 submarines are forming an Est-West line just below where the two Carriers were last spotted. Once the line is formed, the subs will head due North in an attempt to intercept the carriers and inflict damage on them.

Best Regards,

-Terry

The 144 bombers is a telltale sign that the fighter assessment is low.

Am not intimate with IJN carrier complements, but 144 bombers would seem to indicate a minimum of 3 fleet carriers which would mean a minimum of 70-90 fighters.

My guess is that they are running somewhere around 50% CAP and 35 fighters was what was encountered on CAP by the NAV search plane.

Hans-

On June 5, 1942 the Suryu, Hiryu, Shokaku, and Zuikaku launched fighters to intercept Allied Bombers attempting to bomb Japanese troops that landed at Trincomalee.

Perhaps, those carriers have left, and these are new carriers.

However, El Lobo could have two different groups of Carriers around Ceylon.

Accordingly, I'm not going to risk sending a Surface Combat Fleet or the British Carriers down there.

I might commit the entire 221 RAF Group.

And, I have committed all submarines in the area to looking for the Carriers in an attempt to get lucky and damage one!

Best Regards,

-Terry

Japanese Carriers Sighted!

June 12, 1942

Enemy Carriers

If the sighting is accurate, El Lobo has a Task Force of eight Japanese Carriers in the Bay of Bengal South of Vizagapatnam. Four CVs and four CVLs. See map below.

Approximatey 16 submarines are searching for the enemy carriers hoping to get lucky!

Attempt to Lead El Lobo Astray

As many of you in The War College are aware, the Allies have built up the Aleutian Islands in an attempt to mislead El Lobo that the Allies intend an early invasion of Hokkaido and the Kurile Islands; hoping that El Lobo will divert troops there to garrison those bases.

Presently, 9 regiments plus supported with AA units, artillery units, army construction and combat construction units, a SeaBee unit, and Port Service unit are in Alaska Proper and the Aleutian Islands. All Ports, Air Bases, and Forts are building up nicely.

To further propagate this ruse, the Allies are sending 30 submarines to patrol off the Southern coast of Hokkaido and the Kurile Islands.

These allied submarines are a few days out of Wake Island where they will refuel and immediately head to patrol the waters South of
Hokkaido and the Kurile Islands.

Anyone think El Lobo will fall for this feint?

India Aircraft Moving to Hammer Japanese at Trincomalee

1.) Today, June 12, 1942 orders were issued to approximated 60 Allied medium level bombers (primarily of India AFQ) to bomb Japanese forces at Trincomalee (i.e., a regiment and a division).

2.) Today, June 12, 1942 orders were issued to the entire 21 RAF Group to fly to Madras (i.e., and additional 167 fighters and medium level bombers) to assist in pulverizing the Japanese at Trincomalee.

3.) The Allies continue to hide the entire 10th USAAF at Bangalore, and the II U.S. Fighters and V U.S. Bombers at Hyderabad.

Best Regards,

-Terry

June of 1942 is pretty early for a conquest in that area as most of your fighters cannot transit the gap between the Aleutians and the Kuriles.

As for whether your opponent will rise to the occasion, I have no idea ;]

I have no intent on invading Hokkaido or the Kurile Islands.

I have just set all this up hoping El Lobo will think I am intending to invade there so he diverts troops there.

Question for The War College

Regarding Madras Medium Level Bombers

June 12, 1942

Can any of you detect a reason as to why the Madras Medium Level Bombers did not bomb the Japanese troops at Trincomalee? Might my settings be wrong?

Best Regards,

-Terry

You need a good pre-existing D/L on the troops there and good enough visibility on the day. You had moderate rain which makes visibility an issue, even when you fly low.
And then there is the threat level from enemy fighters vs. your own fighter escort. At a range of 7 hexes I doubt you had any escorts set to make the trip.

Regarding the DL, recon is a must. Even recon with bombers is better than no recon at all.

IIRC recon type planes raise DL by 4 while non-recon types raise it by 2.

However, the primary reason missions don't fly is weather.

BBfanboy-

Correct, the fighters based at Madras could not reach Trincomalee at normal range set si I didn't have any fighter escorts with the bombers.

I do have recon with Recon aircraft.

Thank you for your help and please read next message to Hans for Allied plans to better effectuate bombing of Japanese troops at Tincomalee.

Best Regards,

Terry

Hans-

I do have IIRC recon aircraft flying over Trincomalee.

But, no fighter escorts as the fighters at Trincomalee exceeded the fighters normal range.

I am flying two bomber squadrons and three fighter squadrons to Colombo. I will bomb Japanese troops at Trincomalee from Colombo, and exchange fresh bombers and fighters from Madras with those at Colombo when the Colombo bombers and fighters need rest.

Lastly, I have decided to keep the Tenth USAAF, the II U.S. Fighters, and the II U.S. bombers hidden. However, the vast majority of 221 Group RAF fighters and bombers are in route to Madras to assist with the bombing campaign of Trincomalee.

You and BBfanboy have set me on the right track.

Thank you for your help.

Best Regards,

Terry
