ADAK - OMINATO Oct 3-4, 1942 Turns 301-302

I had moved the KB to Oninato (where the transports are loading) and it was at this time Rio decided to make one of his Sub Raids. I thought I would try something new (for me) so with the KB still in the harbor, I set it to 'zero' react and set all of its DB and TB to ASW.

There was lot of reported hits on subs. The KB did react which I did not like.

My sitting at Bathurst Island has been a thorn in Rio's side for a long time. This is his second attempt to bomb the troops. No Japanese casualties on the ground.

I have been re-reading some of the threads on CAP and Sweep settings and I have a FP unit on the way there. It is going to be fun experimenting there.

I don't know how long I have before he takes it but I think I will move my fast reaction Rgt to Koepang. May be some more fun.

Overall I think the first part went well. I had set an attack on the base at Attu Island by three groups but they failed to fly because of weather.

I set the Bombardment according to Lowpe and my air groups generally set according to koniu. The Kates were using bombs and were too high to do much damage but that is OK.

What I am real happy about is that not a single ship has been hit for far.

I am quoting it for two reasons. First, the latter part expertly sums-up my thoughts on China in regards to freeing-up a large number of units, in my case for using them in Burma and India.

Secondly, the first part sums-up what Rio was doing successfully west of Sian, north-east of Keinko, hex 80,40.

Time will tell, but I think Rio just made a significant tactical error.

The inset in the map below shows the positions at that hex that we have held for months. Rio had a little less than 3k AV to my little less than 5k AV. He was well dug-in in this 3X Terrain. The best I could do was bomb and bombard him ever four or five days as supply permitted, and these would result in fifteen or so squads destroyed. At that rate he could have held for a long time particularly if he brought in a few more units.

Another advantage of that hex for the Allies is that there is no easy way around it. To flank or bring in units from elsewhere would take weeks, probably months.

I was working on several plans to do just that when about three (game) weeks ago I noticed a movement arrow for his units pointing to the west. I decided to take a gamble and wait a month to see what happened. The arrow persisted for more than two weeks then disappeared when one of the units from that hex attacked the hex to the N-E. Rats, back to plan A.

Then this turn, the units are gone, that is, they moved into the hex to the west. As I see it, I now have 5K AV freed-up. Now to decide how best to use them. The first thing I will do is move into Keinko and take it.

What I see on the allies part is a lack of defense in depth ... a single line in 3x terrain along the southern edge of the chungking valley ... the problem with a single line is that this game was written by Gary Meaning, a single bad roll and you can lose a hex no matter what. Not often, but it happens. In the allies case, it means a breakthrough into 1x terrain which they then cannot stop you. That is why they meed defense in depth. 2 layers in 3x is a big difference, then even with that rare\, random event, they fall back into a 2nd defended position in 3x ...no breakthrough.

One unit left from the attack below. Will be moved-out in a couple of days.

I'm wondering what to do with my attacking units. Should I move some or all into Chungking? According to Alfred's Rule of Thumb, there should be about 3400 AV there.

I am moving more bomber units into the area. I have not been doing any intensive bombing of Chungking but will start tomorrow.

Before I take on Chungking, I generally will make sure the escape to Kunming is blocked ... I do not want to have to take on +3000 AV a 2nd time in 3x terrain. I also generally secure the rest of the valley first, then I can encircle Chungking as I wish with single units without having to worry about any breakthrough/relief attempt.

Yes. At this stage of the war your fuel stocks should be growing, not shrinking. Almost a month with no large tanker TF arriving in the Home Islands is worrisome to me. You're always going to see a constant drain, but you should see net growth of the fuel stockpile, if you have large enough fuel TF's arriving on a regular basis.

Then again, it looks like you are concentrating on getting oil to the Home Islands which explains your fuel dropping. Perhaps a little more balance in what you ship if you're concerned about your fuel. There was a discussion years ago about whether fuel or oil should be shipped. I don't recall what the consensus was. It's probably in Mike Solli's AAR somewhere.

Oil looks about right, slow trend up.
Fuel is NOT good, also should be trending up.

Likely you are shipping fuel from Japan. Should NEVER do that after you own the DEI. Ship fuel from DEI to wherever you need it as in most cases that is shorter (uses less fuel) than shipping to Japan then to final dest.

Establish the habit now of not letting fuel pile up in the DEI ... get it moved out right away. Once the momentum swings, you won't have time or focus to fix that issue and you can lose +1M fuel easy ... and painfully ...

The results at Kienko frankly surprised me.

I will divide these units and send some to Chengtu, leave some, and send the rest to Chungking. The bulk of the artillery will go to Chungking.

I have some Aviation Support that I have been lugging around for three months included in this group so as soon as supply comes up a little I will move air in.
