19-25 February 1942 (36th week of the war)

Little change from the previous week as our strategic winter offensive has almost run its course.

26 February- 4 March 1942 (37th week of the war)

General Leitenant Konev and his 24th Army launches a pair of successive attacks against the German 6th Tank Division at Rzhev and drives them from the city.

Four of our rifle divisions are awarded guards titles.

The Red Army is now at 6.76 million men vs. 3.83 German. Our losses since the start of the war have reached 3.26 million compared to 608,000 Axis. Half our losses come from troops captured by the Fascists. In artillery, we now possess 76,100 tubes vs. 37,800 German.

Our air losses since the start of the war are now over 6,500 vs. 1,400 Axis. Air-to-Air losses favor the Germans by about 4-1. Losses due to anti-aircraft fire favor the Germans by 2.5-1.

865,260 men were mobilized in the first two months of this year.

5-11 March 1942 (38th week of the war)

The severe winter conditions have relented and the Germans have begun attacks in the Moscow and Kursk regions. There is mainly an effort on their part to push us back in the north while surrounding units in the south. Over 44,000 of our soldiers are trapped in a sac 100 kilometers west of Kursk. These are mainly from Southwestern Front but also includes a cavalry corps from 1st Shock Army.

General-Leytenant Vatutin is transferred from command of 8th Army on Northwest Front to 39th Army near Moscow. 39th Army consists of eight guards rifle divisions formed from numerous airborne brigades.

63rd Army under General-Maior Sergei Biryuzov is formed to the south of Rostov. It receives four guards rifle divisions and one regular rifle division from various armies of Crimea Front.

General-Maior Ivan Mikhailovich Chistyakov replaces General-Maior Kuzma Podlas as commander of 40th Army, Crimea Front. 40th Army has to date had reasonable success against the weaker German forces operating in this area. note: It is also where I am managing my attempt to create guards divisions

12-18 March 1942 (39th week of the war)

Strong German attacks are unleashed against the Bryansk Front, north and south of Kursk. Orel has been surrounded as well by German tank forces. Comrade Stalin is demanding immediate counterattacks in the area, but Bryansk Front commander General Leitenant Remezov warns that our forces are outmatched.

In the last few weeks I have been with the Western Front trying to get them on the move again but have had admittedly little success due to strong German defenses. On the 18th, a new development. Army Commissar Mekhlis has appeared at the Front HQ on Stalin's instruction to serve as an independent observer and to "lend assistance as a political commissar, as the need arises." That I was not warned he was arriving is disturbing enough. What assistance he might propose to provide- unclear.

not too bad given how much Dave has tried to limit your opportunities. So 14 Gds rifle corps should give you 3-4 armies with some real power and the ability to form a couple of reserve groupings?

14 guards rifle corps won't significantly alter the landscape of 1942. I assign some to army commanders that could use wins to get promotions so eventually they can move to front commands.

19-25 March 1942 (40th week of the war)

German attacks continue in the Bryansk Front area as the ground remains firm for mobile operations. 37th Army of Bryansk Front under General Grechko is coming under particularly heavy punishment. The Germans clearly have massed armor and air forces in order to drive in the direction of Tula. In the evening briefings, Stalin continues to demand more counterattacks in the area that we are simply incapable of mounting. On the area of the Crimea Front, General Chistyakov and his 40th Army continue local counterattacks. Our intelligence indicates the Germans have allocated only a single tank corps to the area south of Kharkov.

note: This army on the far southern side of the line is being used for guards farming

In reviewing the various army combat reports, the 40th Army showed considerable success against the enemy in their area of operations. Among the divisions having considerable success was the 44th Rifle which sounded familiar for some reason. I had to review my earlier entries before realizing that was Colonel Chernyakhovsky's division, newly formed only early this winter. He is still having success and is worth keeping an eye on.

26 March- 1 April 1942 (41st week of the war)

Little change in the situation along the front. With warming temperatures and heavy Spring rains expected to return next week, the Fascists are not stretching themselves.

While I am remaining in the field with the Western Front, word is coming down from some personal contacts of mine within the Kremlin that Commissar Mekhlis has made his report to Stalin. He describes a malaise throughout the formations he has inspected and believes I am at fault for not pushing the troops to their limits, thereby gaining victory and restoring morale. He has recommended a change of leadership at the highest level and it seems Marshals Voroshilov, Kulik and Budyonny are in agreement. The four of them have Stalin's ear as old comrades and would appear to be making the worst form of mischief. Regardless, my conscience is clear and I continue to perform my role as I see it, not others.

2-8 April 1942 (42nd week of the war)

Mud has returned across the front and brought fighting largely to a halt. Eighteen new tank corps are formed, with two each assigned to 2nd, 3rd and 4th Shock Armies. Others will be assigned to tank armies come summer.

The commander of 2nd Shock Army, General Lelyushenko in his role of special advisor to the Armor Directorate is asking that Generals Danilov and Krylov of 3rd and 4th Shock Armies be replaced by commanders more skilled in tank warfare. This makes sense from the standpoint that the shock armies are to be a tank heavy force. The problem is there have already been too many run-ins with Stalin as of late. To suggest replacing competent commanders who are not perfectly suited for their role may be difficult.

With warm weather returning soon, the Germans will once again have their mobile formations against us. To counter this, I have instructed the Deputy Chief of Staff for Operations to prepare orders to move our Shock and cavalry armies. They will be moved to positions where likely enemy breakthoughs can be challenged.

16-22 April 1942 (44th week of the war)

During a meeting of the Committee for State Defense on 18 April, Comrade Stalin insisted that fresh attempts be made to counterattack enemy forces in the vicinity of Orel and to retake the city. I replied that for the moment Orel was lost. Stalin raged that talking about Orel being lost was nonsense. I reminded him that the Chief of the General Staff does not talk nonsense and he should replace me in my current position and send me to the front. To the surprise of many in the room, Stalin said that he agrees and therefore relieves me of my post in the High Command. I have been asked to take several days to rest while awaiting reassignment to a new command. Marshal Voroshilov who the boss says retains his utmost confidence will assume the post of Chief of the General Staff and rally our troops with shattering western offensives.

note: this is what the AI handed me, so I will play the cards I am dealt and continue like this, even though I could spend the APs to put Zhukov back.

23-29 April 1942 (45th week of the war)

I have been given a new assignment to take command of the Southern Front, relieving Cherevichenko. An inspection of the areas of the four armies of this front shows them stretched dangerously. Our covering air forces have respectable numbers of fighter aircraft, but no tactical or level bombers of any kind. There are two tank brigades covering the Southern Front and neighboring Crimea Front, a distance of some 400 kilometers.

3rd Shock Army under General Maior Danilov with 17th and 18th Tank Corps has been assigned as the designated mobile reserve force covering Southern and Crimea Fronts. Their location is of concern however as they are stationed outside Stalingrad, far behind our lines. They should be brought forward, but Voroshilov is hesitating to put them at risk. On the 28th I travelled to 3rd Shock Army HQ to speak to Danilov personally as his role is a vital one in this sector. It did not take long to realize he would not deviate from Voroshilov’s intention to keep his army out of immediate danger. It was also clear that his view was not shared by his 18th Tank Corps commander, 35 year old Colonel Chernyakhovsky who had been transferred from 44th Rifle Division, and wanted to be in a better position to react to enemy action. Further complicating things was word from Moscow that Chernyakhovsky had been selected for promotion to General Maior in three days. This clearly would make for a more contentious atmosphere between the army and corps commander. I returned to Southern Front Headquarters with a mind to ask Comrade Stalin to replace Danilov. The question that remained was how and under what circumstances to make such a proposal.

The Germans almost certainly will strike in our vicinity and I have requested to Voroshilov that STAVKA divisions be released to supplement Southern Front forces. The request is under consideration, but no new formations are immediately forthcoming.

7-14 May 1942 (47th week of the war)

Favorable weather conditions for the Germans have enabled them to launch a dual pincer move in the area of the front’s northernmost area along the River Oskol. Lukin’s 16th Army is surrounded at Volokonovka along with the Transcaucasus Front’s 44th Army and units from Southwestern Front roughly the size of a third army. The 44th Army was almost all mountain divisions and are a significant loss. German mobile divisions reach the River Don but then fall back to secure the pocket. Some of our units are nonetheless able to escape encirclement in the area of Nizhnya Duvanka for the moment. As I both expected and feared, the distance of 3rd Shock Army back near Stalingrad from our front line troops meant they could have no impact on the battle.

I subsequently had a lengthy telephone conversation with Comrade Stalin on 13 May about replacing Danilov with Chernyakhovsky. Stalin was understandably opposed to the suggestion as it would mean replacing an army commander of some experience with someone with almost no time in rank. Another objection was that Chernyakhovsky was only 35 years old, which would likely make him the youngest army commander with responsibility for one of the most powerful tank forces in the Red Army.

My arguments were his previous command of the 28th tank division gave him the necessary experience with tanks that Danilov generally lacked. The number of tanks in the 28th division at the start of the war was not significantly higher than that of the three tank corps of 3rd Shock army today. Stalin finally agreed that he would approve the request but cautioned that his failures would be my responsibility. On that point I had no concerns.

Mud has returned this week and once again slowed down the Germans but also restricts our own ability to reposition defensively. 3rd Shock Army under Chernyakhovsky is assigned to Southern Front to provide us with the necessary tank support. General Leytenant Rokossovsky’s 33rd Army (cavalry) is released from STAVKA reserve to this sector. Long Range Air Command is flying its winter contingent of U2VS regiments to reserve airfields and flying in level bomber regiments in time for the start of the summer campaign.

German tank forces push southwest and take Voroshilovgrad. Units from 18th and 19th Armies are trapped by these forces. Roughly four armies now have been consumed in two weeks of mobile operations which is cause for grave concern. General Lukin must be replaced as commander of 16th Army which lost all of its rifle formations. General Leytenant Konev has been sitting idle with his 24th Army near Rhzev since he captured the city, so I manage to secure his release and reassignment to 16th Army. A total of eight guards rifle divisions are released by STAVKA to re-equip the army.

28 May – 3 June 1942 (50th week of the war)

The Germans destroyed what units had been trapped from 18th and 19th Armies. Once again STAVKA releases the necessary divisions and brigades to bring the armies to strength.
Manpower that has been called up to date from our mobilization centers since the start of the year: 2,133,960. Since the start of the war we have mobilized 5,774,310 personnel.
Red Army losses to date: 4,032,034 of which over half, 2.2 million have been taken prisoner. Axis losses are a fraction of this at 785,248.
Other comparative losses include 53,986 guns vs. 11,286 Axis. 16,961 AFVs lost vs. 3,829.

Despite our severe losses, the Red Army boasts 7.38 million under arms vs. the German 4.11 million. We have nearly 500 rifle division equivalents. In guns, our lead is 86,666 to 39,595. Our lead in tanks is not nearly as healthy: 5,834 to 5,389. But this also reflects the number of tanks in the field that can be supported by our underlying truck fleet. Our 21 active tank corps are supported by a reserve of 2,200 T-34 medium and 1,400 T-60/T-70 light tanks.

The Armored Directorate recommended increasing the strength of select armies. Consequently the 2nd, 3rd and 4th Shock Armies now each contain three tank corps and four tank armies to be formed in July will receive the remaining twelve corps. The tank corps are also combined with twenty cavalry corps in five armies. This gives us a total of forty one mobile corps formations.

Our lead in aircraft amounts to 7,118 to 3,979 German. IL-2 sturmovik production lines are now delivering over 50 of these aircraft a week and will more than triple production in two months. Yak-7B aircraft are now replacing MiG-3 regiments at the rate of two per week.

note: the engineer battalions showing lost were disbanded for the most part and replaced by regiments

4 – 10 June 1942 (51st week of the war)

Muddy conditions have once again returned for several days, but conditions will soon be such that the Germans will be on the move again. Intelligence has confirmed the presence of no less than six German tank corps in the southern zone so we can anticipate a great deal of activity in the weeks ahead. These consist of the 3rd (Mackensen), 14th (Nehring), 24th (Schweppenburg), 46th (Vietinghoff), 47th (Hube), and 48th (Kempf). In all we count 9 tank divisions, 5 motorized and 3 SS motorized divisions.

The weather has cleared and in our area the Germans are pushing to the east in the area southeast of Boguchar. Secondary attacks have allowed the Germans to establish a bridgehead on the east bank of the Donets. There is a smaller engagement east of Rostov but are troops hold the southern bank of the Don.

To our north, five German tank corps are on the march. Enemy forces are pushing around Tula and are attacking our forces west of the Oka between Bryansk and Kaluga.

note: you can ignore the references next to the various divisions, those were locations where these units had previously been and in some cases were not updated. I was trying to keep track what units were in which panzerkorps

Mud again across the front but our meteorologists tell us that dry conditions will prevail the following week and herald in the start of summer. German tank and motorized formations continue to deployed forward, confirming our opinion that their summer campaign begins next week. Our air reconnaissance identifies air elements of the German 1st Tank Army in our sector, along with 11th Army between Stalino and Rostov.

2-8 July 1942 (55th week of the war)

We have been compelled this week to yield significant ground to avoid major encirclements. Despite our best efforts, over 80,000 troops of our Front are once again slow to react to enemy movement and are encircled.

German forces are over the Chir and are now 80 miles west of Stalingrad. Equally concerning is our position around Rostov that is fast becoming untenable. Marshal Shaposhnikov has deployed forces in the larger area in positions designed to reduce the risk of large scale encirclement. Along with the Crimea Front, he also has several divisions from Transcaucasus Front as well as our own Southern Front.

Southwestern Front of General-Polkovnik Kirponos has been redesignated as the Stalingrad Front.

Despite German success in our area, I order a counterattack by 3rd Shock Army against one of their SS divisions that proves successful.

The Germans are also striving for similar success in the north by attempting a new encirclement along the Don. Our troops manage to create a link up from outside to thwart the efforts of our enemy.

9-15 July 1942 (56th week of the war)

I summoned our various army commanders to our front headquarters to inform them that should they allow their troops to be encircled again, that a summary court martial followed in the best of circumstances by assignment to a penal battalion will be forthcoming. I leave it to them to consider the alternative, worst case situation.

The Germans this week have chosen to concentrate their efforts for the moment in the north and have closed the pocket on some 173,000 troops, primarily from 37th, 42nd and 60th Armies.

Since the enemy has chosen to conduct minimal operations in the Rostov area, Marshal Shaposhnikov takes a bold approach and uses the opportunity to begin a massive redeployment by rail of his forces from the Rostov area to the Volga, southeast of Stalingrad. This effort will take at least two to three weeks, but if successful will save much of our divisions from possible encirclement by German tank forces in the Rostov area. It will also leave the Caucasus open to occupation by the enemy. However, all industrial elements are long since departed and the threat of counterattack from our sector with troops of three fronts may just keep the fascists from advancing deep into our territory.
