Putting aside the logistics aspect, and that is not entirely an insurmountable obstacle, Japan does not have to commit large forces to garrison the Hawaiian Islands.  Only Pearl Harbor needs to be held in force and a single division suffices for that purpose once forts have been built up.  A good allocation of aviation support plus an Air HQ would also be required.  The other islands can be garrisoned by Naval Guard units primarily.

Alfred

I agree. I wouldn't leave more than a division at Pearl. I would use air forces to keep you at arm's length. It's not like you'd have any LBA to help retake the islands... as long as I see you coming, my Netties and Zeroes will be enough to deter you from taking it back cheaply.

1 division at Pearl, token units at the others. Enough air support to field the units I wanted to field.

Also, RE: your guns being ineffective.... I'm of the opinion that not all of those 1118 shots fired are the big guns shooting at ships offshore. Many of those shots are smaller caliber shooting at troops coming up to the beach in boats. Notice the number of ground casualties they caused among the invaders.

Just remember what he's NOT doing because he's doing Hawaii.

Thanks for the help guys!

I´m actually (as I mentioned before) quite pleased with Nick attacking PH. Besides the fact that its helluva lot of fun seeing something different it also means he is not coming for India or OZ. At least not for another 2 months. And in two months I think the window of opportunity to overcome any of them are gone.

I also think its highly unlikely I will see something in WC/Canada. As I wrote earlier I have something like 10 full IDs worth of troops. All stationed in the major industrial places where he can land. Forts are being built and the air force is ready (although untrained).

What does worry me is the lack of garrison needed. This will free up 3-4 IDs for him that I had hoped would be stuck around PH...where will he go with them? My bet is SOPAC... Good news is that with a small garrison around Hawaii I can probably get a foothold pretty early. Possibly even in 42 (if I want to) I seem to have a knack for avoiding naval search and after my game with Erik I have kind of perfected the art of getting in without being seen and getting out before the bad guys show up!

He also have to clear out Luzon which now is firmly entrenched and troops rested and recovered.

I´m going to keep my fingers crossed Nicks first attack at PH gets wrecked. If he suffers a bad attack it might set him back weeks....

February 1st-2nd 1942
______________________________________________________________________________

At least a good day in the air on the 1st.

------------------------
Pacific
------------------------

KB Vals take a beating over PH. Hopefully some good pilots are lost. I created a PT TF to hopefully wreck havoc among all the damaged shipping. Instead the spend their entire turns avoiding combat (68 AG Leader) and shooting with their MGs...not the best supply I´ve spent...

------------------------
DEI
------------------------

Nick lands at Makassar. Gah. Was really close intercepting this one but a few hexes short... Still have some considerable naval power in the area. But as I lost bases I lose NavSearch and Nick gains it together with LBA. Its makes it harder and harder to operate and not the least to find targets. I´m thinking the time to pull out is approaching.

Might get a shot at something tomorrow. Fingers crossed.

------------------------
China
------------------------

The AVG intercepts another unescorted bomb run. Heh! I stood them down expecting a massive sweep hitting the LRCAP. Instead 20 Nates show up! I can play with Nates! LRCAP back up tomorrow! (I fully expect a huge Zero/Oscar sweep tomorrow).

Nick attacks the roadblock to Sian again. Much worse for me this time.

Overall situation
______________________________________________________________________________

Out of curiosity I pulled up my game against Tom to look at the differences. Both games are DBB but Tom and I was playing SCEN 28 while Nick and I are playing SCEN 30.

I was surprised to see just how much bloodier the game has been in the air. Twice the allied losses and thrice the Japanese! Most of them from PH I believe.

Nick has moved faster initially but paid a price for it in terms of ship and LCU losses. Bit worried to see Nick already has almost 12k VPs. He has the LCU VPs from both Java and Luzon still to collect. And then there are the VPs from PH...lots of LCUs there.

Just keep building up your bases.

If he's going for VP, then New Caledonia and Fiji will be next on his list

Big multipliers there for him

Yupp, I´ll force him to invest to get them. But I´m not going to throw away forces. Learnt in my game vs Tom that I can´t stop him if he goes there. With PH and Christmas gone it will be almost impossible to keep the fleet fueled down there. Better to go elsewhere and then take it back later in 42 (if needed to avoid AV) or just let him rot there.

Stupid game...

------------------------
Pacific
------------------------

Colorado + Warspite was moving toward NORPAC when a sub hit Warspite with a lone TT. No extra damage message or anything. But the AI immediately detaches her to a escort TF with a lone DD (out of the 8 available) and the same sub takes her down with another 3 TTs.

Stupid game. Bah.

Still no attack at PH but Nick keeps bombing from the air losing a couple of planes each turn.

------------------------
DEI
------------------------

Nothing to report. Trying to refuel a couple of 4-stackers but Nells make it very dangerous. The DDs were attacked last turn by 6 Nells. All misses luckily. Looks like I have something moving for Ambon.

------------------------
China
------------------------

Race is still on in the South. In the North Nicks troops have reached my first serious roadblock. 450 AV in DR hex with level 2 forts. Its across a river so he has to shock into that. Could turn ugly for him...

------------------------
Burma
------------------------

The lone unit turns back towards the plains. So probably not the IGD.

BBQ going on tonight so probably no more turns today!

OK, clarify for us what this means. Since I live between North Carolina (vinegar based) and Memphis (dry rub) and see both here. How are you cooking your meat?? What type of meat??

Tonight will be a "Greece inspired" BBQ. So minced meat sticks spiced with garlic, cumin, feta cheese and sundried tomatatoes. And lamb racks of course! Marinaded in olive oil, garlic and mint. Served with a green salad, tzatziki and garlic bread.

But when I get to choose...rib eye. Always ecological and from Sweden (preferably from Gotland). No rub, no marinade. Only salt and pepper. Medium rare and served with green salad, a baked potato and tons of garlic butter.

OMG, Now I´m hungry!

Wine with a "gunpowder nose" ... how appropriate JM! Now if we could only get them to make something with a hint of cordite and liquid oxygen, fortified with torpedo alcohol ...

A slow turn.

------------------------
Pacific

Bombardments at PH. Japanese AV is rising at an alarming rate.

Attacking force 948 troops, 89 guns, 88 vehicles, Assault Value = 2442

Defending force 56188 troops, 804 guns, 538 vehicles, Assault Value = 699

Japanese ground losses:
Guns lost 13 (3 destroyed, 10 disabled)
Vehicles lost 5 (1 destroyed, 4 disabled)

Allied ground losses:
8 casualties reported
Squads: 0 destroyed, 1 disabled
Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled
Guns lost 2 (1 destroyed, 1 disabled)

First attack will come soon I´m sure. I´m dreading that but I´ll keep hoping for a good result. If things go really bad for Nick he could be delayed for weeks here. But I´m suspecting he will get a 1-1 and drop the forts with the first attack. Hex is UL which is only x2 I believe?

DEI

About 100 Nells attack a 7 DD TF trying to refuel at the southern most base on Java. No hits. But sheesh!

Managed to intercept some Sonias again. 7 shot down this time. Nick turns all his attention to the roadblock leading up to Sian. Bad luck for him a fresh Corps arrived the same turn.

One of the Corps is pretty beat up and will return to Sian for some R&R.

Thats it. No screen because I´m lazy!

KB launches an attack from the East. 7 Kates and 1 Val shot down by flak. Nice!

A huge sigh of relief as I win the race for both hexes! Recon is rubbish but its been a long time since I´ve seen any movement indicator on the big stack North of Ichang. He does move into the mountain hex. These troops will be very hard for him to move. The hex is overstacked with 800 AV. I´m moving 200 AV out.

The hex to the west have two Corps with 580 AV. Its a x3 hex and Nick has to shock across the river. If he does it could turn out very ugly for him.

As long as you hold the fuel points Joc, you should be able to squeeze long life out of China!! Nice line formed. Might I suggest having a couple of corps dig in the rocks that have a road? The hex three steps northwest of Sian for example...

I´m not sure about that. Don´t dare light even the slightest glimmer of hope regarding China. Supply is dwindling already...and once its out all my units will become useless.

Its a good idea to start digging in but I don´t have any troops to spare. Everything is currently committed. I have a 250 AV Corp in reserve at Lanchow. That is it!

No turn from Nick today. Not expecting one either with the election and everything going on.
