You have some inland bases that his ships cannot bombard that could work on suppressing his CAP and airfield construction. Terrace, Kamloops and Nelson come to mind. They will be low level but you should have enough engineer units and other units with engineers to rail in and start expanding. Good luck!

Sadly they are not built up yet and I hate to prioritize fort construction for a little while longer. I´ll start expanding some AFs pretty shortly though. But until that Seattle will have to suffice. Until he takes Victoria I should be safe there!

Interesting game, where are your Cvs?

Yorktown is glugg glugg while Ent is repairing at CT. Lex/Sara is escorting a convoy returning from OZ. After that I´m a bit unsure where to send them.

Turns are flying. I think Jeff is enjoying this!

A scare for Jeff...

Looks like KB is moving out? Very strange as the airfield is still size 1.

Soerabaja is lost in the first attack. I shot my bolt at Batavia and only remnants and smaller units are left. At least got confirmation on the 5th and 38th. Question is where they will go now? Luzon and/or Burma is my bet.

Sadly it looks like he got everything intact. Shame.

------------------------
SOPAC
------------------------

A SCTF popped up NW of Koumac on the 8th. I figured it was an invasion but the TF turned back on the 9th. Very odd. Listed as 9 ship with 4 CS and a BB. Probably a CA force.

------------------------
Burma/India
------------------------

Not only is Jeff moving in Canada. It looks like he wants to grab parts of India too? Looks like and invasion of Akyab and/or Cox. MKB is spotted on the 8th. This is ambitious. Too ambitious I think. This might be a good opportunity for me to hit him back. I´ll wait and see how it develops.

US Marines - What plans do you have for 1st & 2nd Divisions?? You have these two and then the Aussies that come into Aden from Med with good experience and not bad combat power to go against so many IJA divisions that should be getting very good experience. Your Indian divisions need to fill out their TO&E and get upgrades to '42 Rifle Squads. So how will you use them??

Not sure yet. Depends mostly on what Jeff goes with this. If he continues on the set course I will either use the Marines in SOPAC since the KB will be stuck in the North. The Ozzies will at least for now be used to smash a seriously understrength Japanese invasion in India.

I´m looking at something quite funny too if things fall into place!

Turns are flying! I barely have time to update the AAR before I have the turn back. Someone is having fun indeed!

------------------------
NORPAC/WC
------------------------

KB is indeed pulling out. 50 Japanese fighters are now at Coal Harbor. Sadly I made a mistake here and might loose the opportunity.

Allford Bay is invaded.

------------------------
India
------------------------

Now this is interesting. Mutsu and Nagato bombard Chittagong during the night. The pretty much wreck the CD guns and the Indian BDE there. This is followed up by a landing by the 18th ID.

14th Ind.Art.Mortar Bn /5

I´ll need about two weeks to get in place for the counter attack. In the mean time I´ll see if I can nibble at the MKB fighters a bit with some sweeps. I don´t have any strike planes though but a lone sub is vectored in.

------------------------
SOPAC

The SCTF disappears North without the subs intercepting.

I should have quite some time before Jeff can start any strategic bombing though. Bella Bella and Coal Harbor are only level 1 AFs. I don´t think he can realistically start anything in earnest before they are at least level 4-5. He needs room not only for bombers but also CAP and escorts. So I´ll use that time getting as much out of what little I have as I can!

In terms of technical capabilities... I think IJAAF and IJNAF bombers each only need a level 3 AF to fly without penalties to range/load. Without checking the manual for the equation. I just know that B-17s and B-24s need a level 5, and the max load on the IJ 2Es is 4000 less and I remember a 2000 load increment per level of AF... so that works out to level 3 in my head .

There is the stacking issue that you mention, though.

A level bomber requires an airfield of 4 + ( ( max load ) / 6500 )

Sallys, Helens, Nells, and Bettys will require a level 4 to carry a full load.

Light bombers get a discount on that formula. I think a dev stated that long time back. So IJA light bombers get full loads from AF=2 IIRC.

I think maybe the initial supposition that he was going to bomb industry might be wrong - it will take too long for him to develop the airfields.
I now think that the is going for Auto-Vic by scooping up all the high point bases in the Gulf of Alaska. Coal Harbour is just a Nav Search outpost and deception.

I stand massively corrected. Are we sure they don't also require a level 5 - in other words, that it doesn't round up the max load function? I'm out of town and don't have access to the manual .

Light level bombers and dive bombers = level 2 airfield
All other Jap level bombers = level 4 airfield

Thanks for the info on the AF size guys! Theoretically that means he could start flying shortly. Realistically I think he needs at least two air fields around 4-5 before he can begin. He needs not only the bombers but also escort and enough left for a decent CAP.

Not impossible. But its not that many VPs for him. Currently around 1200. Then again if he starts building up places like Juneau (100x multiplier) it will start rolling in VPs. But he needs to build them...which will require a big effort.

PS. Is Juneau a typo in the DB? Should it be a 10x multiplier and not a 100?

I think the huge multiplier for Juneau was deliberate to make the Allied player defend the Gulf of Alaska area against a Japanese incursion there. Canoerebel's opponent (Khyber Bill?) almost got auto-victory but Canoerebel placed a strong unit (US Inf Rgt , I think) at Coal Harbour so K-Bs plan to bomb industry for VPs fell apart. And of course, while the big operation was going on in the Gulf of Alaska the allies were preparing a counterpunch elsewhere ...

Pretty decent turn.

------------------------
NORPAC/WC

US subs attack something like 10 targets during the night. All against the escorts () and no hits against fast and nimble DDs.

In the morning though the old Argonaut manage to put a single TT into a Maru. No sinking sounds.

Pretty happy as 13 Zeroes are shot down for only a lone H81. Confirmed CVs:

Don´t think I can take those on without Lex/Sara. Having some second thoughts on the counter attack. I think it might be prudent to wait until they left the coast to avoid Naval bombardments?

Wonder if it will make him cancel the crossing. Those engineers would have been needed in the shock attack.

Why do you say he needed the engineers in the shock attack? - Just for their AV? The forts are only at 2 which can usually be handled without engineers, so I wonder if I am missing something? (be nice when you answer that! )

I would want them if I was to shock attack into x3 terrain and 2 forts.

Engineers always seems to take the brunt of the damage in shock attacks. Not sure if they really do but when fighting in Burma in x3 terrain my engineers always took the brunt of the damage leaving most of my infantry pretty much intact.

I would want them if I was to shock attack into x3 terrain and 2 forts.

Never thought of it that way! British combat engineers seem precious to me - my impression is that they fill out much more slowly than infantry, indicating a low replacement rate. So for the British, I hold the combat engineers back until there is a bridgehead.

I don't know if the Japanese have any problem replacing engineers. Will be interesting to see whether he calls off the attack.

American CVs to India - Too late for them to get there and affect anything. Two more invasions possible in near future - Viza/Cocanada or Ceylon. Viza is possible to be part of pincher to isolate Calcutta area off.

Combat engineers are used to reduce forts so they are very handy to have in battle.

I´m pretty sure he will call it off. Especially considering he lost 2 of the arty units. I´ve been wrong before though!

Too late to effect anything right now yes. But long term they might prove very useful. I´ll have another 2 weeks to decide.

Don´t think there will be any followup invasions in India within the near future. He doesn´t have any troops to do it with in the area.

Only IDs he has to "spare" right now are:
33rd - Moving to Canton from PH
5th and 38th that just cleared up Java.

Not enough even by far to really threaten India even if he sends them all. Forts are too high now (4-6 at Calcutta, Karachi, Bombay and Madras). But he needs to grab Darwin and clear up Luzon too...many jobs for not so many IDs!

I´ve been wrong before though.

Sorry for the lack of updates. Have prioritized sending turns to Jeff!

------------------------
NORPAC/WC
------------------------

The Japanese start sweeping US bases. I´ll let them as I have no intention of trying to battle Japanese sweeps. AA will decide the campaign and not fighters. That being said I´m quite busy here preparing for Operation "Glass cannon". Very fitting name...

KB shifts around to the south and then back up North helping with the sweeps of Seattle.

------------------------
India
------------------------

We are both sweeping here and both hitting empty air. No one wants or needs to put a CAP up. This suits me fine though. The counter attack is slowly gathering. As a boon I just noticed in an attack of Java that a fragment of the 18th are fighting there. Went back and checked the CR for the Chittagong attack. Lo and behold...

So no combining.

MKB disappears somewhere. Hard to tell as my NavS is really crappy in the area. Only 2 CATs flying from Diamond Harbor and 3 on Ceylon.

------------------------
China
------------------------

Through some miracle with withstand not only 1 but 2 attacks on the Ankang road. Only explanation is that Jeff is resting his tanks.

quote:

Ground combat at 83,45 (near Nanyang)

Japanese Deliberate attack

Attacking force 31183 troops, 315 guns, 213 vehicles, Assault Value = 1085

Defending force 30973 troops, 209 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 671

Japanese adjusted assault: 372

Allied adjusted defense: 985

Japanese assault odds: 1 to 2

Combat modifiers
Defender: terrain(+), experience(-)
Attacker:

Japanese ground losses:
1673 casualties reported
Squads: 3 destroyed, 193 disabled
Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 14 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 15 disabled
Guns lost 16 (2 destroyed, 14 disabled)
Vehicles lost 42 (1 destroyed, 41 disabled)

Allied ground losses:
671 casualties reported
Squads: 3 destroyed, 101 disabled
Non Combat: 5 destroyed, 8 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 2 disabled
Guns lost 15 (1 destroyed, 14 disabled)

Assaulting units:
41st Division
13th Tank Regiment
37th Division
9th Ind.Mixed Brigade
12th Tank Regiment
9th Armored Car Co
60th Infantry Brigade
15th Ind.Medium Field Artillery Regiment
14th Medium Field Artillery Regiment
52nd Ind.Mtn.Gun Battalion
1st Army
6th Medium Field Artillery Regiment

Defending units:
29th Chinese Corps
90th Chinese Corps
66th Chinese Corps
7th Artillery Regiment
22nd Group Army
41st AA Regiment

Obviously I´m just delaying the inevitable here.

------------------------
DEI
------------------------

Only a lone base remains in the mountains south of Batavia. Still no move on Darwin or Perth.

------------------------
Luzon
------------------------

Jeff is slowly reinforcing his beachhead. Wonder if he is waiting for the troops on Java to finally move in on Clark and Manila?

------------------------
SOPAC
------------------------

First signs via SIGINT on a move for Suva. Only a RGT so far...If I´m lucky Jeff might try and grab the SOPAC locations on the cheap. Forts are coming along nicely and he will probably need at least 2 IDs for both Suva and Pago Pago + KB. I´ve topped off with supply, AA, CD guns and mines.

Replacement pools
______________________________________________________________________________

Well, I´m running out of things I´ve never been before. Absolutely bone dry right now:
- US Rifle squads
- US 90mm AA guns.
- US 40mm Bofors
- US 155mm CD guns.

This is a bit problematic. Given the situation the AA guns are the real issue. Several of the WC AA units are not even close to full TOE and the ones destroyed at PH can´t fill out. Replacement rates are abysmal.
-20 90mm/MO
-40 Bofors

This is basically a coast AA unit per month...slow. At least the AA units coming as reinforcements seem to have a full TOE. 4 full ones arriving within the next 30 days.

I always run out of those things, except the 155mm CD guns.

Reverse Lend Lease - Buy out the big AA brigade at Colombo and ship it to NW USA. Let him chew on her 72 heavy AA guns.

Geniuses think alike...they are already on transports to CT and then to EC.
