Didn´t have time to finish the turn last night. Spent an hour this morning and will be done shortly. I hope I can get the replay back today so I can do an update before I leave.

Damn allies. Always so over confident, they can finish turns later. Sigh..

Turn away!
______________________________________________________________________________

I should get the replay and CR back today so I can update the AAR before I leave tomorrow morning.

------------------------
Allied predictions
------------------------

I predict a full Mersing gambit. MKB outside Singkawang and the KB hitting Manila with everything they have. Olorin is going to blitz the DEI and land in Oz mid/late January backed up by KB and a full commitment in SOPAC. Early landings at Noumea, Suva and Fiji.

I´m going to work really hard not slipping into old habits. I have what I believe is a solid plan to counter the predicted Japanese advance. And what I think is a very solid plan overall for 42. I can´t stop the Japanese advance but I can throw gravel into the machinery. And I can try and force Japanese reactions to allied moves.

Now the waiting and guessing begins.

Was running the turn when I got an email from Nick saying he had forgotten something that could unhinge his entire plan. He then asked if we could redo the 1st turn. Obviously I´m not very happy with that as I spent over 8 hours with the turn including setting the alarm at 4 this morning so I could work on the turn before the kids woke up.

I asked him if there was anything else I could do but no reply yet. I really feel his pain but I´m not sure I could muster up the energy and motivation to redo the 1st turn again. There is absolutely nothing in the 1st turn for the allies that is fun to do. Its just a 6-10 hour chore.

Not sure what he missed but the only thing I can think of is that he forgot to load some troops.

Anyway. Not going to do an update until I know what will happen.

When playing Japan, I always run the turn against myself to make sure I did what I wanted. You can save in multiple slots to accomplish this.

+1.

Just read Olorin's AAR and his attitude is great. This is simply going to be a great game between great players.

I´m very relived to hear I won´t be redoing the turn again. Nick will try and recover from the mistake he did. I really hope it doesn´t hurt him too badly and he can get at least partially back on track. We all know how easy it is to make a mistake and generally I´m quite open minded for redoing the turn.

But setting up China is just pure agony! Just the thought of it made me want to do this:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PN0XRkSyhwM

Update coming tonight. Very interesting opening from Nick. One I have never seen before. I was partially wrong. Most of KB hit PH with good results considering the smaller strike.

Takeoff!

------------------------
DEI
------------------------

Very interesting opening. Not one I have seen before. We have no less then 3 smaller CV TFs operating in the DEI. Kaga was stumbled upon in the South China Sea.

We also have a small TF operating just west of Singkawang. This TF turn Durban, Dragon and Danae into dive attractions. I got no positive identification besides Kaga but this was the strike package during the AM phase. I guess its Kaga and a CVE?

quote:

Japanese aircraft
A6M2 Zero x 11
B5N1 Kate x 11
B5N2 Kate x 7

Japanese aircraft
D3A1 Val x 22

The three "Ds" survive the AM phase without a single hit but are as mention sunk during the PM phase. Force Z escapes unharmed and probably undetected.

In Manila I don´t really know what happened but I think Olorin will send some commanders to Mongolia. I will have a potent sub force in the DEI the coming months.

quote:

Morning Air attack on Manila , at 79,77

Weather in hex: Clear sky

Raid spotted at 37 NM, estimated altitude 14,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 12 minutes

Japanese aircraft
A6M2 Zero x 34
G3M2 Nell x 36
G4M1 Betty x 81

No Japanese losses

Allied Ships
YO-41, Bomb hits 1, and is sunk
SS Seawolf, Bomb hits 1
ARD YFD-1 Dewey, Bomb hits 1

Allied ground losses:
11 casualties reported
Squads: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled
Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 1 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled

Never seen such a poor result. Obviously not complaining though.

Interesting, you allow port strikes with land based air on turn 1. You gotta be very happy in Manila.

Give us the grimy details on how you saved Force Z. Or do you wan to keep it close to the vest for a few turns, until whatever it is they are doing happens? Or is it a closely guarded AFB secret figured out after a lifetimes study?

DEI (Cont.)
------------------------

Now for the most interesting part. Not seen this before. Presents some real problems for me as Olorin can now deploy search assets far forward from pretty much D+2.

quote:

Ground combat at Taytay (75,82)

Japanese Shock attack

Attacking force 66 troops, 2 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 5

Defending force 0 troops, 0 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 0

Japanese adjusted assault: 6

Allied adjusted defense: 1

Japanese assault odds: 6 to 1 (fort level 0)

Japanese forces CAPTURE Taytay !!!

Combat modifiers
Attacker: shock(+), leaders(+), leaders(-)

Assaulting units:
Yokosuka 1st SNLF /1

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ground combat at Busuanga (77,80)

Japanese Shock attack

Attacking force 92 troops, 2 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 7

Defending force 0 troops, 0 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 0

Japanese adjusted assault: 4

Allied adjusted defense: 1

Japanese assault odds: 4 to 1 (fort level 0)

Japanese forces CAPTURE Busuanga !!!

Combat modifiers
Attacker: shock(+), leaders(-)

Assaulting units:
Yokosuka 1st SNLF /2

This probably means my chances to slip anything out from Manila besides the subs are probably...nil.

Yeah, very happy. I usually lose half the subs. Nick must have suffered a once in a lifetime back luck on the dice roll. Clear weather, no CAP and a nice coordinated strike. And then...nada. In the end its not going to chance that much since most if not all shipping will be sunk anyway. But having an extra 10-15 subs in the area might prove useful. At least for recon purposes.

Not really a secret about Force Z. As I thought I would deal with the full KB in the DEI I saw no use in having them there. So I just sent them North at full speed. Not really sure how far they got but they should be somewhere around Medan. The will head to Colombo and then onward to new adventures.

The combat report says those Bettys were detected at around 14K feet - a bit high for trying to hit small ships with level bombing.

Usually they drop 2-3k from the spotting altitude. 10K is a pretty common height to bomb Manila and get good results. Would adding another 2K to that make such a difference. Perhaps a better point is that they aren't trained in ground bombing in this mod?

I took Busuanaga on day 1 versus Commander Cody in out short game. He can fly some good search in.

Pearl Harbour

KB took up position NW of PH missing the subs I´ve sent to the normal position. I´m too lazy too look up my old AARs but the strike seems a little lighter then normal?

So Tennessee is gone. Penny and Nevada will be in pretty bad shape and the rest will probably need a year or so. With upgrades they will probably be back mid 43. Don´t have much use for them anyway until then. Bloody fuel hogs!

I'll bet days 2-3 will provide some more interesting stuff. He looks very aggressive with the mini-KBs in the DEI.

If you can, think about getting Lysanders into China to see what's coming a few days in advance. Really helps.

No doubt. I have what looks by the replay like the whole shebang going for Mesing. I´ll get some Lysanders into China to help out with recon.

Tennessee only took the one torp hit from the SSX. Did she suffer a magazine explosion? Shouldn't have sunk from a single torp otherwise.

Hope he does not come back for seconds ...

Usual stuff initially. Recon is hard and the Japanese can shift fast using the rails. I´ll just set up the roadblocks and try to move weaker troops back for some R&R. Only 2 units have replacements turned ON for now.

I expect him to push for Sian first. Hopefully I can stall him a week here and week there adds up.

Looking forward to China with SL. I can't hold it anymore without it. I have been brutally swept away through the Sian gap and am surrounded in half a dozen locations. Losing two quick
battles in succession on the Sian road unhinged the whole mess. I dread China now. I should have marched the reserves north right away to bolster the northern flank, but hey, I thought he
might try the southern "pincer" to cut the Ledo road. Best of luck.

I won't be able to comment much as I am reading Olorin's AAR too.

I am looking forward to following your battles, fears, and victories.

Wishing you and Olorin a long, fun war.

I don't think it matters in the long run. They're smaller bombs, too - 250kg and 60kg. Don't do as much damage.

Force Z is best used in the first week if there is an opening without strong air cover, otherwise best saved for late '42 IMO.

I actually think China is a lot harder with SLs. As Chinese supply is critically low you can burn through all the access in a single turn if you accidently overstack somewhere. Either by mistake or by retreats. Also makes it harder to set up a defensive in depth as troops on the 1st line will have to retreat or move through the other lines.

I think against a determined Japanese attack China is impossible to defend. No matter what you do you will run out of supply in spring/summer 42 and then its all over.

Thanks.

My thinking too. And Olorin is too skilled and experienced to not bring enough air cover. Allies are really suffering from lack of fast BBs in 42 and PoW and Repulse will no doubt become very useful!

PoW - probably has the best AA available until after 10/42 upgrades of any Allied ship.
