I hope you refer to the "never sleep" part, not the "pain and suffering"!

A very nice Trappist with a serious punch!

There was a Trappist Monastary a couple of miles outside Winnipeg that brewed beer to help finance their costs. Their beer was not as strong as the one in your link (6% instead of 9%) but was too bitter with hops taste. The Chimay Bleue sounds more to my liking!

I spent most of last night being a train track/landing strip. Plenty pain and suffering I can assure you. Wooden trains smashed down on your head will hurt!

The Chimay wasn´t bitter at all. Closer to a Weissbier then a IPA/Ale. Very good if you like Weissbier (which I do)!

Wow, those are some pretty high Ops losses, 30% on P-40 and 60% on P-39. Jeff too on his Oscars. Were there a lot of damaged planes during battle that crashed on landing (or were junked afterwards)? Or do you attribute this to something else?

We both had a lot of planes on LRCAP which suffers heavily in OPS losses.

A bit of a milestone today. Now I just need to keep it from dropping below 10k.

Fluctuations are due to supply in India/China.

Air losses
_____________________________________________________________________________

The air war is showing a distinct allied advantage. We are doing really well and I have no doubt this will improve further as the war progresses.

I have yet to get more competitive allied air frames like the P40K into combat. Corsairs are only 2,5 month away now and Hellcats just over 6 months.

Still looking good for the target of 4000 Japanese planes destroyed before the year is up. Jeff hasn´t really put any pressure on my pools lately and they are looking really good.

Missjudged Jeff here a bit. Was sure he wasn´t going to reveal KB again for just small shipping. Cost me a AMC and 2 APDs lightly damaged. APDs can all make full speed tomorrow though so they should get away. AMC is sunk.

A bit annoyed my 75 plane LRCAP from Luganville never showed up. Supply dropped into yellow though which might explain it. The Pioneer battalion was safely left ashore though.

Learning by doing.

If I were him, I would be seriously contemplating a grab for the Fiji and New Caledonia right about now, if AV was my aim.

I honestly don´t think he can take them. 2 fully prepped IDs at both places + armor and arty. Level 8 forts. With SLs he can´t just plonk down 6-10 IDs and capture it in a few days. He would need LBA, Naval bombardments, KB on guard and lots of time to take either place.

Considering his closest port and airfield is in Rabaul...

well played, I've never faced that level of fortification, it can't be pretty without a lot of engineers.

It's also kind of counterproductive to take these isolated island bases at this point, right? Eventually, after he would spend a ton of supplies and a bunch more fuel taking, building, fortifying and sending numerous ships back and forth, he'd then end up with the Allies taking something in New Guinea and cutting him off. Not a good play. In fact not really ever a good play to go this far for Japan in this game.

I´ve had almost a whole year to build them.

High level forts are nasty to bring down. Only encountered them late in the war as the allies with all their gadgets and 4Es. Even then its very time consuming and costly. Don´t think its easier for the Japanese in 42!

Indeed. Perhaps viable if AV was in the balance and Noumea could tip it over. But with almost 10k short of AV taking the Fijis and Caledonia wouldn´t change a thing. And since it wouldn´t change anything it wouldn´t force me to commit naval forces in an "all or nothing" defense.

I think Japan at this point would be best off looking over the defenses and sorting out the mess in India. Not striking out deep into SOPAC.

I disagree. Taking Noumea/Suva early will set the Allies back several months if you can maintain your deterrents, all without risking serious LCUs or ships. Having them can also make your Allied opponent sweat about VPs, since they can't easily build up a few hundred in a couple of weeks in just one location.

It's India I never agree with. Maybe Calcutta and Ceylon, if you can manage it, on the off chance you'll capture a bunch of booty. But that's it.

Agreed if we were talking early 42. But this is not early and Noumea and Suva are very well defended. Noumea has 2 IDs, 150 Grants + arty behind level 8 forts. Suva has 2 IDs (1 USMC), 100 Light tanks + arty also behind level 8 forts. All troops 100% defensive prepp.

Closest Japanese airfield is Tulagi (size 2) and Rabaul (size 5). Jeff hasn´t even expanded the port at Rabaul. A Japanese push into New Caledonia and Fiji would require a major Japanese effort.

I feel quite confident I could defend at least Noumea even against a full scale Japanese attack. Remember that we are playing with SLs so he can´t just land 10 divisions. SL is 35k at both Noumea and Suva if I remember correctly. Suva would be a little more dicey as it has less supporting bases and airfields in the close proximity.

How?

I'm guessing that JeffK thought the Japanese had it and the discussion was about getting it back or bypassing. That can happen if you don't read back far enough in the thread.

Ah, yeah. Been a bit lazy with the screens lately.

Japan currently controls the Solomons (A lone Regiment at Tulagi) and SNLFs at Efafa, Ndeni and Aoba. I´ll try a get a bigger update up during the weekend. RL is currently eating away what little spare time I have.

N0.

The question was, could the japs take Suva?

Joc detailed his strong defences.

Lokasenna commented that taking it would set back the Allies.

I would select surrounding islands where I could set up bases to interdict supply runs to the area and possibly bring on an ill advised counterattack. My strategy includes noy bashing your head against a wall is there is a open gate you can walk through,

Yes, but that would require a huge Japanese effort including building up LBA bases in the area. It would be costly and time consuming and I very much doubt it would be beneficial from a VP standpoint. Suva in itself isn´t much VPs and such an en devour wouldn´t be loss free.

Besides I don´t think it would be successful in the end. It would take too long and give the allies too much time to reinforce. I have good bases at Pago Pago and Vavau and could easily expand many of the undeveloped bases in the vecinity if needed.

Unless AV is on the table, or it's early enough to threaten it, Suva and Noumea don't mean a thing to the Allied counter in later 42 into 43. Just leave em. There is no setback. They're so far from anything important it doesn't matter if they're Japanese. If the Allies own Lunga and Tulagi, what good are Suva and Noumea for the IJ? Just a lot of lost troop VPs and wasted supplies and fuel.

Sound like my wife!

PS. Turns are slow as Jeff is still ill. I´m also coming down with something so I basically just crash in bed as soon as the kids are in bed. I know the AAR is suffering at the moment but I can assure you that you are not missing much!

Glad my AAR is more fun then work. Sadly the quality have dropped off lately. 2 kids + work + wife + turn = little time left for the AAR.

26th September -42
_____________________________________________________________________________

Turns have been pretty slow lately and there has been almost no action. This is an update to catch up.

------------------------
NORPAC/WC
------------------------

Jeff restarted his strat bombing campaign here after I made the mistake of leaving Calgary undefended. Stupid move by me and he got some VPs.

I now have 2 P40K squadrons here and once they are ready we will make another attempt on Coal Harbor. Besides that not much is happening here. We dig. That´s about it.

More arty moving PH....

------------------------
India
------------------------

No action here for the last 2 weeks. My right flank is still catching up with the rest. I continue to probe Japanese NavS. Moving BFs and engineers forward to Dacca and Tezpur.

We will start moving here very shortly. Not decided on target yet. Ordered another set of Recon before I make up my mind. Ideally I would like to strike directly at Chittagong.

------------------------
SOPAC
------------------------

This is the only area that have seen some action. Jeff has sortied out some CVs on two occasions now. Allied losses have been negligible with an AMC and an APD sunk. Not the full KB though. Looks like only 2-4 CVs.

Efafe is about to be recaptured and we continue to expand bases in the New Hebrides. Expansion of the area around Townsville is going well. Once Cooktown has expanded its airfield we will start sending in some smaller convoys. This will speed up progress even further.

------------------------
VP score
------------------------

Allied base expansion is starting to show. Allied VPs are about 200 in the last 10 days. Japanese air losses continues to climb and is approaching 4000.

------------------------
Allied planning
------------------------

Given the current VP situation I´m in no hurry right now. There is a big upgrade coming up for the navy in just 2 weeks. Its a significant bump in ship AA and not something I´m going to skip out on. Its a 3 week upgrade so that means the navy will be gone for most of October.

I´m looking at the first big Amphib OP possible before the year is up. But again I´m in no hurry and won´t take unnecessary risks.

------------------------
AAR
------------------------

I´ll continue to update the AAR sporadically. Once things start to happen again I´ll return to my usually format. But right now so little is happening there is no point in daily updates.
