Ronda if your power went out it may mean your install was corrupted and it may not install at all. That is what I've experienced when something I was downloading was interrupted.

Windows 10 is an unusual release for Microsoft: if you have a licensed version of Windows 7 or 8/8.1, it will very easily upgrade to Windows 10 - you don't even need to enter a licence key. Clean installations, however, are a bit trickier: you do need to enter a licence key, and your Windows 7/8 key probably won't work.

Fortunately, if you're running Windows 7 or 8, and you really want to use your free Windows 10 licence key to perform a clean installation rather than upgrade, there is a solution. It's pretty convoluted, but it works.

First, you need to do an in-place upgrade to Windows 10. You can do this via Windows Update, or if Windows Update isn't playing ball you can use the direct download tool: English/German/French/Italian/Dutch. If you use the download tool, make sure you select "Upgrade this PC now." It goes without saying that, before you install any new operating system, you should back up any important data beforehand.

Once the upgrade has completed, make sure you've been activated by Microsoft. Open up the new Settings app, then head to Update & Security, Activation. It will say on the right whether you're activated or not (see image). Also note down what version of Windows 10 you have (Home, Pro).

If you haven't yet been activated, you can try forcing it via command prompt: run cmd.exe as an administrator, then type slmgr.vbs /ato. You may need to try a few times, as the activation servers were being hit quite hard.

This first step will convert your current Windows 7/8 key into a Windows 10 key.

Now you need to install Windows 10 again! Grab the Windows 10 download tool and run it. This time, select "Create installation media for another PC." Select the appropriate version (Home, Pro) and the tool will generate an ISO for you. Let the tool help you burn the ISO to a DVD or USB memory stick.

Now, proceed with a clean installation of Windows 10 (select "Custom: Install Windows only" when prompted.) When it asks you for a product key, click Skip. If it asks you multiple times, just keep hitting Skip.

Once you've installed Windows 10, it should activate normally. Again, you might need to manually slam the servers using slmgr.vbs /ato. Voilà: a clean installation of Windows 10.

In theory, you should be able to reinstall Windows 10 again in the future on the same PC, but if you make significant hardware changes you might need to use the manual telephone activation process. Currently, it isn't clear if you can take your freebie Windows 10 licence key and use it to install Windows 10 on another machine (but will confirm this once known, as it's a bit vague atm)

Thanks for the tips :) I finally just gave up. 4 gig of my monthly data cap used up and nothing to show for it. Guess I'll wait till nextra month and try again. I've been having trouble with my Steam downloads too. Slow downloads with 300 kB being good :( Damn satellite Internet! It gets worse every month.

I've upgraded my desktop PC and my Surface Pro 3 to Windows 10. Both operations went smoothly. I'm liking Windows 10!

I don't care for Edge (went back to Chrome), and my Microsoft Money stopped working! Other than that, I like it...

Why would you allow this piece of crap onto your machine without even knowing what it was designed for??

Microsoft’s Windows 10 has permission to watch your every move

so i'm guessing you use something completely different as a O/S then?

EULA / Privacy Policy / Terms and Conditions are in all, even Apple, and all spy on you to a degree.

first you need to understand what does and doesn't happen with a O/S.

as it's a platform for other apps, depending on what platform you choose, depends on the level of protection it offers, minus the apps and program you install and use, so on the best platform with the worst programs and apps installed, it's like a house door with the key left it, remove the problem apps and programs and you close some and only some of the draft from the door's.

install 3rd party stuff to fix the leaks and you're half way there, windows 10 has been and is more open than most before it about what it does do and can do and what can and can't be turned on or off atm, saying any different is wrong and poor information i'm sorry to have to say, was on the beta of this for a long time.

every time you install anything, go online, use a mobile phone or send any sort of electronic message, or plain snail mail for that matter, some one has the chance to read it, no matter what you do, or what ever method you use, unless you're saying we go back to writing on slates i can't see the point of repeating the same old scaremongering and poorly misinformed posts, as nothing in the thread has mentioned anything new that hasn't been in all O/S since they first started making them, now at least they are telling you in advance and letting you make a more informed choice, does it keep dates / work and will use it?, is the same as cookies and sites that keep them, who cares?

nobody is forcing anyone to sell there soul to M/S for free with a offer that is going to bite them and steal all their non precious data, what do you do for a living? nuclear rocket research for nasa? or some dodgy stuff that you would like to keep hidden?

my point is, one person's cr@p is another dream tool, a car is a mass killer with the amount of deaths it has caused, planes keep falling out the sky, be we all still use them, cancer kills some, but people still smoke knowing it may, it's choice and informed choice.

a firewall is only as good as the idiot who installs a poor or bad programs onto a computer, a virus program is only as good as a surfer habits and updates for it and the O/S in use.

you show me a better one, and i'll give you a list longer for it's weaknesses?

show me a better designed one? as Apple are very worried, so what else is left to choose, open source?

it has to date the biggest single day and weekly gross installations than all other O/S todate put together, add up the numbers, in 2013 500 million computers were running windows xp world wide, if windows 10 is already outpacing this with installations, by a year or 2, it will be over the XP numbers, so for a cr@p O/S it's doing very well, and i wish i had invented it.

a few days ago M/S released this http://www.windowscentral.com/report-windows-10-now-installed-67-million-pcs

so what's the number now?

quote:

Even more interesting is the claim that Microsoft hit a max bandwidth of 15 Tb/s, topping the previous record of Apple's 8 Tb/s during their last OS push. Microsoft has reportedly reserved up to 40Tb/s "from all of the third-party CDNs combined".

quote:

Their goal is to hit a billion over the next two to three years, so they have plenty of time.

so either way cr@p or not 67 million people disagree with the links comments :)

with maybe a billion over the next two to three years, so as this post will be here then anyway, if i'm wrong, please feel free to come back and tell me, i won't mind either, i will be here same as the info and post...

This is interesting. A setting that allows your PC to become a server for dispensing MS updates using your bandwidth.

while i agree with some points, i also think that if a user who is given something for free has nothing to hide, what ever data is shared, isn't going to overthrow a country or planet, any hacker worth a cent could take it anyway, so just use common sense, turn off all that can be turned off, as many here like poster above are finding some great info out, SP1 is out next week, which also sorts out a lot of people's concerns as well, with some defaults being turned off and you have to turn them on etc etc, so a better way imo.

but as anyone ever used a upgrade that was not only free, well no as it's the first, but works for fixing broken pc's O/S as well, for me it's a tool sent from heaven and would say most techies hours of repairs, can't believe it.

quote:

Shouldnt a democracy always be vigilant?
well from that comment you are from the US, and are still in a denial that you live in a democracy as why you may think you have much choice or control of well anything, mega corps have been running the world for too long, and have the power the normal person doesn't, they just let you think you do.

But now that Microsoft has ended support for Windows XP, any outstanding bugs and security holes are never going to be fixed. So as you're still using it, you're living on borrowed time, and you prefer this to window 10?

very strange, you point out problems with the latest O/S and give good reasons not to use it, then carry on using something that will never now have any known problems fixed, while the latest ones gets 1000's of hours spent per week, week in week out for it's future life, they have already said, this may be the last O/S and just carry on updating and replacing it with patches and fixes, and money both of us could never understand the amount in numbers or costs etc, and still you choose to use XP? must admit in it's day, with windows 98SE, XP was one of the best, but now? sorry it's obsolete and as soon as the support went, it had it's day with me.

but good luck, like a leaky boat on a vast ocean, it may or may not sink, it's a gamble, but stay lucky

great find and share, known and will be sorted in SP1 in a week or so times, hopefully then most stuff mentioned will be turned off by default and user if wanted or needed will have to enable, so again they have listened

there's scripts out atm that do most of this, but as there WIP i won't share as yet, but here's a list of fixes so far in one script, it's a run one file that auto turns off default items, and works, is safe, but a update could turn it back on, so gets updated, few kb file, but as most are waiting for SP1, will wait and see to post this.

Features:
- Disable telemetry and data collecting
- Disable or uninstall OneDrive
- Uninstall default Windows Apps
- Replace Utilman with Sys-Admin CMD on Lockscreen (optional)
- Disable Quick Access as default view in Explorer
- Block Telemetry servers via hosts file
- Disable Cortana / Bing Search and Searchbar
- Disable unnecessary services
- Disable unnecessary scheduled tasks
- Enable the classic vertical icon spacing on desktop
- Remove versioning tab from properties
- Enable classic control panel view
- Disable lockscreen
- Indicate compressed NTFS files
- Change Logon screen background with accent color
- Show file extensions
- Disable jump lists
- Internet Explorer 11 tweaks
- Disable Windows Update sharing

And thanks to the five million people who tested Windows 10 before release, good job :)

and not a M/S fanboy either, just like to give my opinion and credit to where credit is due, if it as bad, very bad i'd be one of the first to know, then agree

Utterly. Ive repaired any problems myself. Theres no need for any modifications since I mostly use it for gaming and it still runs them superbly. No need to change a thing, especially when you need to modify the so-called, "upgrade" to prevent data leaks and unwarranted snooping. What kind of paranoids need to know what I do?

Thats because youre a follower. Theres no need to fix something that isnt broken & spyware should be illegal and enforced as such. Linux is superior enough for searching & working.

ok, here's something you haven't got, it's a godmode version of a O/S works in 10

and here's how it works,

goto your desktop, and make a new folder, call in your name, then a .{ED7BA470-8E54-465E-825C-99712043E01C} so for me the folder is called zak.{ED7BA470-8E54-465E-825C-99712043E01C}

and press enter, this combo makes a folder for super power user in windows 10, we call godmode, share, enjoy and be careful once in it, as yes if you don't know what you're doing you can wipe everything, but see the power it can give and enjoy another share :)

your system account must have administrative privileges for this folder to work.

I'll just stick with Win 7. It does everything I want. Maybe I'll upgrade later to Win 12 or Win 13. Maybe by then the idiots at Microsoft will get a clue.

lol,

so you're not what you call software buff then?

as M/S has said, but not made it 100% clear and final as yet, but have made more than a few comments on the subject, Windows 10 will be the last version of windows, full stop, it will just be upgraded and patched and has no end of life statement, all other O/S before it had one stated as soon as it was released, a clear path to the next version and upgrade, windows 10 does not, and for a reason.
so you maybe waiting for a long long time, but have a year to take up the free offer, then after that buy it if needed.

good luck.

The new entry reads, "Windows 10, released in July 2015."

My guess, based on that language, is that in the next two years or so we'll see an extension of the 10-year lifecycle based on a new baseline release date. But that's just speculation, and we'll have to wait for the actual answer.

M/S has been vauge about windows 10 being the last one, and while it now has a end of life, many insiders think a different version released 2 or 3 years down the road, maybe free or not with a still win 10 title but on a different release date will alter the date from that's which has been atm posted, as no other version of windows has been given a release date version end of life stamp :)

Windows 10, released in July 2015 as all other version are win 7 / 8 with no date :)

being a lot more cryptic now days is M/S...

but information coming out atm is next is 10.1, then .2 so win 10 in this format could go on for 20 year plus or forever, with 10 being the last one, given a date for version 10 of ten years, gives an idea of what coming next, in a couple date / info maybe added that 10.1 is extending that to another few years or so, with 10.2 release date doing the same, etc etc...

no new info or links to post as yet, just forum gossip.

Guys, let's try and keep this thread OT on Win10 for people who might have questions, rather than another skirmish in the OS wars.

Cheers

Press Windows key + X.
Click on the System. Click on Advanced system settings on the right hand side.
Click on the button near the bottom labeled Environment Variables.
You may see both TMP and TEMP listed in the section labeled User variables for (account). That's the common location; each different login account is assigned its own temporary location.
In the Variable value Edit box, you may specify the path to the directory that Windows and many other programs will use for temporary files.
