There are flurries of snow blowing across the field as Ensign Gray sloshes his way
across the mud that masquerades as Prince Ruperts airfield.
The squadron commanders words still ring in his brain.
"Even if you are the last one left, I want you to go in, and score a hit"
Ensign gray. Ninteen years old. A dive bomber pilot who has never dived a bomber......

They gather about the bombers, look at the grey skies, feel the breeze.
The bombers, a dozen of them, are almost as new as their pilots. Gray has just 6 hours
in the Dauntless DB2.
He is young, he will manage, barely think of the challenge of even getting
this beast away from the mud.
Everything is concentrated on what might happen out there.......over those grey seas, under the grey clouds

Last smokes, hand shakes. The clatter of gear as the men climb aboard
Deep breathes, condensation whipped away by the breeze

Engine start, and now all too busy to think.
Now, now just do


The wildcats go first, comforting numbers, nearly thirty strong.
Then the vindicators......breath held from a hundred places as they drag their
sorry arses into the air.

A last look.
Fumbles with controls, another breath, throttle on, bouncing, sloshing,
another bounce, swaying, bellowing, ground rushing, the fence coming up fast,
arse almost puckering as it slides barely clear below.

A left bank.

And into the grey.


13000 feet
Bloody freezing.

They wind a curving way through the clouds, and quickly lose 4 of their number.......

But those 4 apparently find the carriers.


Radios cackle, buzz, voices excited, now worried, ZEROS!........and suddenly silenced

The dauntless fly on, lost in a world of grey.

And they burst into clear skies, blue seas, shining sun. The front behind them.

Japanese carriers. The mythical, untouchable, rumoured Car Div 5, 2 big fat
buggars, another smaller one, all of them already curving great white wakes ,
beginning to do the dance.

"Even if you are the last one left, I want you to go in, and score a hit"

There is no time to be scared, already the wildcats are peeling away....
Shadows above, cruciform, red bloody meatballs, diving in, tracer spitting

Rear gunner busy, the chatter of his guns, yelling in the headphones,
indecipherable.....everything concentrated on that big barsted ahead.

The wildcats fight well.
About him, fighters swirling, flash past, hammer on the port wing,, overcorrection,
wobble
Curse
The crack of AA about them, bombers falling, friends dieing.

And suddenly, there are only 4 left.
Shokakau right below.

Stick forward, NOT TOO FAR!.......the plummet
The dauntless forgives him.
It dives
Straight
True
Its wings even stay on as he pulls her far too savagely away, bomb screaming down

Down

Down

Into the deep blue sea 20 metres from the carriers great flank.







10 wildcats lost
8 dive bombers lost
4 near misses

A message , however , sent.

Look for the class of xAK that has a capacity of 6200 tons. There are about a dozen of them that can convert to 5400 ton capacity AEs - enough to arm any Allied BB. You will need them.

Car Div 5 moves Westward again, and is soon lost to the allies
We know it will be back, there is too much heavy metal on the waters on the Japanese
side now for them to depart. Japan, it seems, is going all in in these frozen wastes.

In the DEI's, Japan "backfills" the island chain leading from Soerabaya to Dilli.
In Burma she cautiously advances

In China, Japan consolidates its hold on Wunchow, chases the chinese North.
They have, however, stopped the offensive on Sian.

They should, overall, be pleased. Other than a single Indian Division trapped near Palembang,
all allied forces in the theatre of operations are destroyed, or all but destroyed.
The oil is in their grasp, many allied ships have been sunk.
Only Port Moresby remains to be taken to secure all phase 1 objectives.

Allied intelligence intercepts a message
Ïmperial guard division to prepare for operations, Vizapatnam, southern India."


A decoy?, or the real thing?

This document is written as a monthly overview of the war to date, lessons to be learnt, and
an appreciation of possible enemy operations, and our likely responses.

War to date:
The aggressive allied land strategy adopted can, in the cold light of day, be called a failure.
Although we almost succeeded at Palembang, troops deployed, and now lost, are going to be sorely
missed in the months ahead

On the other hand, the aggressive use of Naval forces has been an outstanding success, with
several invasion convoys smashed up, and significant losses (currently estimated at 15)
inflicted on the Japanese destroyer fleet.
BB Haranua is still listed as sunk.
Our losses, although heavy, will be replaced, Japanese ones not so easily.

Only 3 Japanese carriers operated this month, CARDIV 5, in the Alaska Bay area.
We have inflicted heavy losses (up to 30%) to these ships airgroups. However, Japanese
Carrier strength remains such that no effort to engage with ours will be made unless
we have at least a 2 to 1 advantage.
Our Battleship situation is dire, with only 2 available in the pacific at this time.
All others are now in port, repairing.

In the air, our B17 remains our most effective weapon, engagement with enemy fighters is
positively encouraged.
The AVG has been withdrawn for 60 days, utterly worn down by 2 months continuous action
We lack fighters, TBD's, and nearly all types.

Strategic situation

PEarl Harbour is now considered "secure"
Convoy routes to and from pearl to the united states, and to Australia, are still considered vulnerable.
I am filled with anxiety about the Americal division enroute to Australia

Suva, and surrounds, is now developing into a significant bastion
Noumea, thanks to the French attitude, must be considered lost.
We have successfully bombarded Lunganville, the Japanese furthest southern advance.

Australia remains vulnerable. A great deal of what happens here will depend on
the Milne Bay, Port Moresby, Horn Island triangle.
The Australian, General Blamey, seems competent enough, but I fear he does not understand
the difficulty we will have supplying him if a siege develops.

In Burma, Japan moves slowly.
Diego Garcia is under effective blockade, and as you are aware, operations
are in hand to deal with this base.

India, we feel, is a big meal Japan may not be able to digest.

Finally, China
despite all predictions of disaster, China is hurting Japan immensely

This month saw a very large number of regiment sized units scattering right across the southern plains
of China, some even threatening Shanghia.
Japan has had to expend massive efforts to isolate, hunt down and destroy units that all
predicted would be lost anyway. This effort has allowed the bulk of China's main Army to
consolidate, organise, even attack.
Wuchow almost fell to them.
They have destroyed several divisions now, troops Japan must replace

Finally, North Pac
A very large Japanese effort underway here, to be met with everything we can spare.
I will sum up this area Mr president this way. I am betting my Engineers are far better
than his.


Enemy intentions
March

Port Moresby almost certainly. We will let this fight go, as I cannot justify
anymore Naval losses for such a place.
We will, however, take what opportunities we can

There is intense radio activity by 2 army HQ's at Singapore. where they will go, may well determine
what happens for the rest of this year

Westralia lies alongside, San Francisco.
The dock, as so many sailors can attest, is in about as isolated and bleak
a place as you can imagine, miles from the city proper, miles from public transport.
A warren of warehouses, concrete, trains, cranes, stevedores and trucks.
And, now, of course, freshly minted, full of themselves, military police.

Lt Young grants leave.

By dawn, no less than 6 of those same policemen are in medical care.........

PM's residence

Mary Ford plays her role well. This is, after all, one of the perks of being the
Prime Ministers wife.
A chance to dine, a chance to converse with some of Australia's most powerful people,
and, of course, a chance to show that un elected that she might be, she is not
with out influence........

It is a middling size party, the New Zealand Ambassador, a representative from Suva, and
most excitingly, that Frenchman (what is his name......to hell with that, there is more
in that chiselled body that interests her)from Noumea.

The topic, of course, is the war.
Luie (that's his name......of course, a free Frenchman, whatever that is) is
lamenting at the decision by Noumea's governor to ban all allied forces from there
"It is madness, of course.....What do the Japanese care of treaties, already they occupy
Lunganville......."
Mary asks what she knows her Husband will not
"And when they do come, what then?"

The Frenchman shrugs......."To the hills I suppose"
Frank enters the conversation "It will be damned awkward, still, my Generals tell me
we cannot hold it, and Suva ( a nod to its representative, a smile back in return) at the same time"
"but dear Husband", Mary gives just the right level of mockery to her voice "wont it be
easier to defend it, than one day try to take it back?"
"If we do"( shut up woman, we KNOW that)

The butler enters, passes a note to the PM. He blanches.
"Trouble dear?"
"Yes, at the docks, a damn strike"

Cold bay is pounded by Japanese Battleships
Car Div 5 planes then add to the rubble, and swipe Dutch harbour as well.
Allied forces can do little to respond, they hunker down, and wait for help.


Betty Bombers strike at a convoy near Broome. The message is clear. Darwin is soon to be
isolated by sea.
If it is to be supplied, it must be supplied soon.

In China, sparked maybe by Frustration, maybe by malice, or maybe by perceived necessity,
the Japanese bomber force (now numbering at least a dozen formations of all types) changes tactics

The first "terror" raid in the Pacific, bombers strike at Changsha, targeting the factories, the industry
spread across the city. The raids are devastating..........

entire convoy is waiting, that Darwin is waiting because they want an extra quid?"
"Two actually, they are claiming its for 'hazardous work' some of them
seem to be convinced that they cannot go near ammunition, or even a rifle still packed in grease"
"You have got to be kidding me"
"Trust me, they are not. I would remind you, that they were a big part of your parties election, this
I think, might be payback"

"But this is war time!"
"They, I think, don't give a stuff."

Damnation.
"Make the arrangements. I am going to Sydney"

Westralia slides north, the coast of the United states a mere 2 miles away on her starboard side.
Hang overs, sore knuckles, or not, the men are alert.
Japanese submarines are swarming the coast of Alaska, Canada, so why not here as well?
"Truk, this is even colder than Melbourne in mid winter!"

The Gun commander grins, stamps his feet. "Ï think, young man, you have no idea what cold is yet"
No I don't
But I have a horrible feeling that we are soon to find out.

Frank:
Just a small note. In these times of trials, it has been pleasing how
Your Nation has so willingly co operated with ours.
Resources, as you know are stretched, and are, undoubtedly going to be stretched even
further.
I have heard that one of your sons is serving on Westralia, currently about
to enter the conflict up North
I share with you the anxiety of a Father who's sons go to war.
The Japanese are pushing hard in the North. I hope you understand that we cannot
spare anymore resources for the South Pacific at this time .
My generals tell me that sufficient forces are now there to maintain the line of
communications between us....albeit at a pinch.

We are in a tight pickle. But please rest assured, Australia is very much in
our plans for the future offensives .

These will come, unrelenting, and victorious.

In return, The future 10th airforce strikes Magwe with some 36 B-26,s, a dozen B17's
Some oil facilities are damaged, but not enough.

6xB17 strike Rabual, a cloud of Claudes rise, they are utterly unable to interfere.
The Bombers even manage to strike a AK in the harbour.

It cannot last, of course.

Sydney harbour

1st division has been deployed
8000 men deployed to the last place they expected they ever would be.
Sydney Wharf.

Over 6 brutal hours in a private room, Frank has wrestled with the Maritime unions.
Men who have supported him, sponsored him, nominated him time and again through out his career.
But their demands have been almost impossible.

The meeting, ever more violent, has ended badly.
Franks final words "do you really think the Japs will let you keep your extra couple of quid, if they
get here?" have not swayed them.

And so, terribly, the troops have gone in.

6 Large AKs are now being loaded.
A mans political future may just have ended, sacrificed on the altar of trying to save his
country's

Lost, totally, of course on the workers on Sydney's wharf.

The Terror bombing continues in China.
It is difficult to imagine what the Japanese hope to achieve. When they eventually take these cities, as they
must, what use the rubble remaining?

DD Kurishio sunk by a SS near Diego Garcia.

Car div 5 strikes cold bay.

A disaster in Burma, nearly 70% of the B-26's are killed over Magwe........

A few new half moon shaped barracks, two hangers.
A thousand clues about them that this field is new, incredibly new.
The fighters aligned alongside the strip are new too.

14 planes
14 brand new planes
An unknown future.
Jack barely hears anything of the commissioning ceremony, anything of the Commanding officers
equally brief speech.
A squadron is being born
75th RAAF
14 planes
14 brand new planes
Kittyhawks. A decent fighter!. A real fighter!

Almost with lust, Jack eyes the nearest gleaming bird.
How long before they see action?



Soon enough Bluey. Too soon enough.

Japan continues to flood the Attu island chain with forces, back filling
every potential base.
Covering the operation, Car Div 5 remains working, again striking Dutch harbour.

The allies too, are committing considerable forces, Prince Rupert begins to groan at
the seams as train after train pulls in, spewing out young green men, but more importantly,
something Japan can only dream about.
Bulldozers
Dozens of the fat ugly machines, blades still gleaming.

In this war, as short as it has been, the papers have been filled with zero, carrier, battleship,
and weapons of every design.
Nary a mention of these weapons. For that is what a bulldozer is. Its a weapon that can
turn a coral beach , or a swamp, or a forest, or even a hill, into the ONE thing this
war will ultimately become all about.
Airfields.
They will clatter from the rail head to the wharf, given absolute priority.
They wait now, for the ships to take them North.

It may be for the best, the Japanese are simply deploying too many planes in China to
be deterred.
The ruthless bombing of her cities will continue.

B17's from Port Moresby strike Rabual again, and shoot down defending fighters.

Radio chatter fills the air.
Japanese Forces are on the move, loading in Singapore, Soerabaya, the home islands.
On the move, but to where?

In less than a week, the world will know.

It gets colder
The seas, surprisingly, are smooth, dark, oily.
And dangerous

His feet are frozen. His hands are frozen. He has seen snow now for his first time, and
quickly decided he hates it.
Not as much , of course, as he hates this ship, its crew, and this bloody war that has placed him
in this misery.

It is just after midnight
In two oceans, two ships increase speed to full ahead.
Westralia begins her dash into Prince Rupert. In the Indian ocean, Enterprise too increases
to full speed to make port.

The Japanese ss net is spread wide.


Darwin is bombed!!!
A small number of Nells, Betties try to bomb a small Dutch destroyer sheltering there.
They miss.

Thats irrelevant. The fact is, Darwin has been attacked. Australia has been attacked.
What a Prime Minister has sworn cannot happen, has.
