Those guys have nothing on me. We used to have to make the royal shoeboxes they lived in from our own discarded knickers.

Gorns wear knickers? How about female Gornettes?

We don't wear knickers, we just soil them and make them into shoeboxes for the likes of you to live in. It's what we do.

It looks like she's putting a propeller on a drone, but I don't see how the propeller would actually be affixed to that propeller shaft.

The metal ring with the four nuts is easily visible on the prop, but I see just past that a metal liner inside the hole through the prop. Perhaps after the prop goes over the shaft there is a fastener that goes inside that recessed circle where the tip of the shaft might protrude a certain distance.

That girl is Norma Jeane Mortenson ....

While working in a factory in 1944 as part of the war effort, she was introduced to a photographer from the First Motion Picture Unit and began a successful pin-up modeling career

also known as Marilyn Monroe

Does look like it. She must have it bent under the prop.

I was wondering what sort of aircraft that was. It's likely a staged photo of some sort-note the identical items (engines?) in rows behind her. None of them have props affixed and-like you say-there's no visible means of attachment at this particular stage either. It's a very small wooden propeller too-so not a high performance passenger / load-bearing aircraft.

If this is circa WWII (and not later-say 1950s), are these target drones? I didn't think they used those much in WWII and favored towed targets for that sort of thing.

Towed targets were popular for aerial target practice but drones were used frequently for shipboard anti aircraft practice. Tow pilots were not as concerned about a stray 30 or 50 caliber aircraft round , but no one wanted to be around a 3 or 5 inch when it went off. Besides , a target sleeve probably would not work with a proximity fuse. A target towing aircraft would work a little too well.

Makes sense. But *when* did drones see widespread training use?

"here she's seen assembling the OQ-2 radioplane, (sometimes called the RP-5A, TDD-l or the "Dennymite" for its designer Reginald Denny), which was the first mass produced unmanned aerial vehicle in the world. Drones have been in the news so much recently that we often think of them as a new concept in war. But they've existed in some capacity in virtually every modern American conflict since WWI — when the U.S. military experimented with the Kettering Bug unmanned aerial torpedo."

I was about to lecture you on the Kettering Ariel torpedo. But I was beaten to the punch. Drones were not mass produced till ww2, mainly as congress couldn't appreciate buying something just to shoot it down (then again , they weren't too crazy about buying ammo either!). Ryan aircraft (the folks who built the Spirit of St Louis ) who built a lot of trainers (like the PT-19) would eventually find the niche at one point only making drones.(Mainly the veritable Firebee. And a lot of the 1st drones were unmanned aircraft (as today). Anything with a "Q" in front of it. QB-17's, etc . (Today we use QF-16's).

And one other "non-drone" air target was the QP-39 and QP-63 "pinball" aircraft. They loaded the aircraft with armor, fitted it with a couple of lights that would light up when hit (hence the name "pinball") and some lucky pilot got to fly it while bomber crews sot at it with "frangible" ammo (which would allegedly "crumble" rather than penetrate the armor).

Going OT, there's an expression I completely loathe. Not because it means some thing I don't like, but because it doesn't mean anything at all. And it is somehow cliche at the same time.

Why are you posting in this thread? Are you still doing your turn 1 for your PBEM game? Or have you gone off in a new and different direction?

Still doing turn 1. I keep adjusting the plan. I haven't played in two years so I'm trying to remember what I'm doing. Tweak, Tweak. I think I just invented a new social networking thing, "Tweaker".

I've got one of these things being sold as "tactical" flashlights. It's actually pretty cool. It has gear to take three AAs but I use those lithium 18625 batteries and have chargers for various sizes besides so I don't have to get out the cigar box with all the Duracells and Everreadys or make a trip to the drugstore to get more. My question is this, what makes a flashlight "tactical"? Is it because you can put a dent in somebody's skull with it?

I'm working on it. Just got done with air unit orders. I still have to have a life. I can't stay away from the forum for too long. Plus, since I banned Steve I want to go over all the boring stuff for those in the audience who don't know much. I should put a disclaimer on the AAR to not believe everything I say, though.
