We have a lot of bald eagles around here (the Columbia River Pigeon). I've seen them take rabbits, one was in our backyard once sitting on a rabbit. I've never heard of one taking a cat.

Since moving here I've been cautious about letting the cats out too late, we do have coyotes, but they don't come this far down the hill until after midnight. My SO was fine with the older cats going out, but she freaked out when one of the new cats wandered off when out. I found her 2 feet inside the neighbors yard. She looked at me with a "what's up?" look. One of the cats doesn't want to venture very far from the back door, but the other wants to explore the neighborhood. She's quite possibly the smartest cat I've ever met though. I'm not terribly concerned anything is going to happen to her in the middle of the day. There is only one other cat out in the neighborhood and he's met our cats, he isn't really a fighter. He just sniffed noses with one of our cats and ran off.

I'm hoping to get my SO to change her mind, the cats really want to go out.

Indoor exclusive cats are far 'healthier' than their outdoor exclusive bretheren.

Steve is exactly right. When the risk factors for FIV/FeLV, other vaccine-preventable disease, Big dog:small cat, automobile, owl, human animus, cat fight-related injuries and infections, other opportunistic predators, etc. are factored in, an outdoor exclusive cat's average lifespan is a little more than 2 years of age. Indoor/outdoor increases that to someting like 7-8 years. Indoor exclusive cats' average lifespan is greater than 12 years of age.

Not my experience.
My indoor-outdoor cats are vaccinated. Indoor cats tend to become very fat and lazy, just like humans who don't go out and get exercise.

Status: offline 		Another problem for outdoor or indoor/outdoor cats is that declawing them is crueler still. Be cruel to your furniture and rugs instead. And wear ballistic armor.

My indoor cats average 18 years (3 out of 4 so far). Of course my current two are just a couple of years old. The exception was my "Bald ass Guamanian Booney cat" , which spent several years as a feral jungle cat on Guam. I'm convinced that took 10 years or more off her life (and the x-rays certainly suggested it).

I've never had an overly fat cat. We play with them every day , and "run them" using a laser pointer. And by having two, then generally will race themselves around the house.


O grew up in Maine where "barn cats" (many of them Maine Coon cats of VERY large size). They had barns and out buildings to shelter in , cat doors to come in when they wanted to , and regular feeding and medical care. I don't ever recall one living 10 years. Sorry , just my experience.
